Sophie Haydock's debut is an electrifying blend of fact and fiction, a well researched look at the Viennese artist, Egon Schiele, a protege of Gustav Klimt, his groundbreaking erotic nude portraits seen as scandalous, earning him the reputation as a pornographer, which led him to being hounded out of rural locations, and his eventual acceptance as Austria's leading painter. We are provided with a glimpse into his modest background and family, a stationmaster father who tried to beat the need to draw out of his son, but the driven Schiele will not be dissuaded from his single minded passion and ambitions for art. The novel begins with a young woman, Eva, crashing her cycle into an old woman in Vienna in 1968, whose attention is on a poster for an art exhibition. Eva visits her in hospital to return a ring she finds at the scene.
Haydock breathes life into 4 women, his muses, of whom little is known, imagining their relationships with Schiele and the dynamics between them where their lives cross. There are the privileged bourgeois sisters, Adele and her younger sister, Edith, very close to each other, living their daily lives amidst the social whirl of events in their society calendar. Adele is the more adventurous, who upon seeing Schiele moving into an apartment opposite their home, becomes obsessed with him, watching and observing him, organising whatever encounters she can, not put off by his reputation, certain they are meant for each other. A betrayal plunges her to breaking point, highlighting her mental fragility and inability to control the rage within her. Edith is the more modest, apparently more socially conventional sister, fired by her own inner desires, intent on shaping a new version of herself.
Gertie is the possessive and jealous younger sister of Schiele, their relationship crossing lines, featuring as a subject for his drawings since childhood. Vally, is from an impoverished background, a proud, determined, bold, loyal and independent minded woman, an artist's model, and in a relationship with Schiele for 4 years, there for him when everyone else deserts him in his hours of need, but never seen as a serious prospect for marriage by him. She is my favourite muse as she spurns Schiele's efforts to continue to exploit her after making his more advantageous marriage as she becomes a military nurse instead. Amidst the blazing desires and passions that mark the dynamics between the muses and artist are the turbulent years of the war and the deadly devastation wreaked by the Spanish Flu pandemic.
This is a riveting and captivating read that had me caught up in the time and the place, the life of Schiele and the muses that inspired his art, the tangled mess of passions, the love, loss, grief, the lies, poison and betrayal. The only discordant note for me was the Eva thread where she meets Adele a few days prior to her death, it felt surplus to requirements in what is otherwise a superb piece of historical fiction. Było kilka momentów, gdy sama postać wielkiego artysty niezwykle mnie irytowała — czułam, że jego obecność w życiu kobiet i lekkomyślność przysporzyła im wielu cierpień i nie mogę tego przeżyć.

This novel transports you to Vienna at the start of the 20th century, the city being a cultural hub, a city of music and art especially the innovative art of Gustav Klimt. It’s centres around Klimt’s scandalous and shocking protégée Egon Shiele whose art at this time is regarded as pornographic. It’s divided into four parts for the four women who are at various times his flames or Muses. It starts with Adele Harms who regards Egon with eyes full of longing, then a jealous and deluded eye. Secondly, his sister Gertrude Shiele, whose portraits show her as coquettish but also defiant. Thirdly, Vally (Walburga) Neuzil whose portraits demonstrate a distinct air of challenge and intelligence but are also mournful in tone. Finally, Edith Harms whom Egon marries and she is portrayed as sweet but also seems uncomfortable. If you look at her portraits you could understand why! How does Egon emerge from this? I think I’d suggest not that well! Certainly no one escapes an encounter with him unscathed.
This is a debut novel and I really like the way the author weaves fact with fiction to bring these characters to life. I especially enjoyed the way she explores the potential dynamics between the flames/muses to create a fascinating narrative throughout. The triangle between Egon and the two sisters is especially intriguing but also how Vally fits into the jigsaw. The one that especially fascinates me is the relationship between Egon and Gertrude and here you learn much about the man.
Throughout it all these dynamics create flames but also there are external flames you cannot control. For example, flames of inspiration and talent, of fame and infamy passion, jealousy and so on. The external flames are of war and destruction and slightly later the encroaching flames of a devastating pandemic.
Vienna at the start of the book is described beautifully with all its magnificent opulence. The theatricality, extravagance, the glitz and glamour of the dying embers of the Hapsburg empire. The contrast by 1918 is a stark one and impacts all the characters and in most cases disastrously.
The quality of the writing is very good, in places it’s almost sensual as you might expect given the nature of Shiele’s work but the author cleverly changes the tone to suit the four very different women and how they interact with him and impact on his life.
I enjoyed this book very much as it’s different. I knew a bit about Egon Schiele and his art but it’s neither necessary to know of him or know anything about art as this is a portrait of human beings, of human nature and their various interactions. A very impressive debut.

Being this the debut of Sophie Haydock as a writer, I must say I was very pleased with the result. Little is actually known of the women that somehow represented a great deal to Egon Schiele, the controversial artist of the 1910s who defied a prude society with his expressionist art until his talent was extinguished by his passing as a consequence of the deadly Spanish influenza.
Through the perspective of Adele Harms, Gertrude Schiele, Vally Neuzil, and Edith Harms (Schiele), we get to learn some historical facts splashed with bits of fiction of what these women might have been like and felt and how they influenced Egon and his art.
Sophie was an artist herself in making us visualize a possible world, how the characters might have behaved or what they could have thought at the time. I had never heard of Egon until this book crossed my path, so I'm glad I read it. It also made me realize that in spite of the technological advances our world has had, we will always be vulnerable to things we're really unaware of like the recent COVID pandemic we've gone through.
If you're into history mixed with historical fiction, I'm almost positive you'll enjoy the experience probably as much as I did.

Fabularyzowana opowieść o austriackim artyście Egonie Schielem i czterech towarzyszkach jego życia.
W gruncie rzeczy, niewiele wiadomo o kobietach, które towarzyszyły Schielemu. Ich biografie są niepełne, pourywane, zapomniane, jak to biografie wszystkich tych, którzy stanowili jedynie tło dla wielkich osobowości. Po Gertrude, Wally, Adele i Edith zostały plotki, cudze wspomnienia, fragmenty listów, jakieś oficjalne dokumenty… Niby nic osobistego, nic, co mogłoby pozwolić zajrzeć głębiej, poznać je bliżej. Zostały po nich jednak… twarze uwiecznione na obrazach, ich spojrzenia zaklęte na płótnach, ich ciała i pozy, jakie przybierały. Sophie Haydock zadała sobie pytanie: co czuły te kobiety? Kim były naprawdę? Kim był dla nich Egon Schiele?
W „Czterech muzach” autorka przenosi nas w początki XX wieku, czas przemian, narodzin zupełnie nowej epoki. Kobiety powoli luzowały gorsety i chociaż wciąż uwikłane były w konwenanse, społeczne zależności, to pozwalały sobie na więcej. Świat zmierzał ku wielkiej rewolucji – postęp technologiczny zmienił postrzeganie rzeczywistości, a ludzie zaczęli zadawać sobie pytania, na które wcześniej nie mieli śmiałości. Co znamienne, to właśnie wtedy pojawił się Zygmunt Freud, którego intrygujące wówczas teorie o snach i podświadomości łamały tabu, otwierały pole do szerokich salonowych dyskusji. I tu wkracza Egon Schiele, który odrzucił nauki swojego mistrza Gustava Klimta, bogatą, popularną wówczas w sztuce ornamentykę i złocenia, w zamian oferując ciało w całej jego kompulsywnej, seksualnej okazałości. Schiele powtarzał przy krytyce, że:żadne erotyczne dzieło sztuki nie jest świństwem, jeśli posiada wartość artystyczną. Świństwem staje się dopiero, gdy świnią jest widz. Jego modelki pozowały więc roznegliżowane, ukazując najintymniejsze zakamarki ciała, przyjmując pozy, które niewiele pozostawiały wyobraźni. Musiały mieć w sobie prawdziwe pokłady odwagi, by stanąć przed artystą, nie zważając na to, co powie o nich społeczeństwo, kim staną się w ich oczach…
Sophie Haydock oddaje tym kobietom głos, kobietom, dla których Schiele był w pewnym momencie całym ich światem, a które stały się częścią jego artystycznej legendy. W „Czterech muzach” czujemy ich pasję, ich ból, ich cierpienie. Obserwujemy ich losy, ich poświęcenie dla sztuki, oddanie zmysłom i chwilowemu pięknu. U boku Schielego stały się prowokatorkami, łamały konwenanse i kreowały siebie od nowa. Były bohemą, czyimś marzeniem, modelkami, ale też kobietami z krwi i kości, nieujarzmionymi w swojej miłości, które dzisiaj spoglądają z portretów sterylnych sal galerii. I chociaż to tylko fikcja, to „Cztery muzy” otwierają nagle całe morze interpretacji. Już nigdy więcej nie spojrzę na obrazy Schielego tak jak przed lekturą. Zawsze będę mieć przed oczami dziką Adele, oddaną Gertrude, porzuconą Wally i wierną do końca Edith.

The Flames sits solidly at a 3.5 for me.
The Good: It's clear that Sophie Haydock cares a lot about Egon Schiele and has meticulously researched him. She's got an evident passion for the subject of his art. A lot of the content problems that I had with the book were forgiven by the author's note, in which she states that she made up the love triangle between the two Harms sisters and Schiele (I really dislike sibling love triangles, especially involving two sisters). An author of historical fiction who acknowledges their own interpretations and fictionalizing of events is a good one, and I can't fault Haydock for any decisions made in that sense. Haydock's also a talented writer and I was engaged enough not to put the book down for two days.
The Bad: One of the jacket reviews on The Flames says, "The Flames gives vivid voice to four muses who refuse to be remembered as just that." Inside the dust jacket, you find the words: "This is the story of four Muses. Women whose bodies were shown in intimate detail, depicted by the charming yet controversial artist Egon Schiele. But who were they?"
I do not find either of these statements to be an honest depiction of the book. The Flames is not about who these four women were. They do not have distinct personalities or connections to any characters outside of Schiele (an exception to this is Edith with Hanna and Adele). The book is about their relationships to Schiele. Gertrude Schiele, Adele Harms, and Wally Neuzil all outlived their relationships to Schiele—but the book does not acknowledge that. Gertrude is shunted from the book as soon as she marries; Adele's entire life is made to revolve around an obsession with Schiele despite the fact that she outlived him by 50 years; and most egregiously, Wally's time serving as a nurse in WWI in Sinj and her life after leaving Schiele is omitted completely. None of these women are granted lives or interests or really distinct personalities outside of who they were to Egon Schiele. The premise that this book sells itself on just wasn't there in the actual book content.

Having just seen the great film adaptation of The Mad Women's Ball, which acknowledges that institutions were places of tremendous abuse and suffering but also places where women could form networks and yes, even behave and treat each other as human beings, the dehumanization of Adele vis-a-vis her mental illness really disappointed me. I also don't understand why Haydock made the authorial decision to present Adele Harms' (fictionalized) mental illness as so dehumanizing, since her author's note talked about wanting to bring justice to Adele Harms' memory and have her burial site recognized.
All in all, this was a really interesting piece of historical fiction that didn't live up to its premise. It's Schiele's story told through the women around him rather than their stories, and focuses more on the unpleasant reality of loving a narcissist. Still a great book, but just not exactly what I was looking for when I picked it up!

Kolejność sportretowanych kobiet (Adele, Gertrude, Wally, Edith) także uzasadnia się czasowo i tworzy bardzo zgrabną kompozycję. Jednakże pod gładką warstwą historii można wyczuć szorstki nabłonek języka. I już nawet nie chodzi o miałkość i niewyrazistość stylu, nie o słowo wyjęte ze środka każdej powieści obyczajowej - chodzi o brak zindywidualizowania. Kiedy dochodzimy do dialogu, każda postać wypowiada się tą samą manierą, w jednym, trochę krępująco-dziecinnym tonie. Czy to echo tłumaczenia, czy przewinek Pani Haydock - ciężko stwierdzić.
Z portretami psychologicznymi sprawa jest prostsza. To powieść oparta o historię (co i jak ładnie wyjaśnia w przedpodziękowanym rozdziale), jednak w głównej mierze wciąż fikcyjna. Autorka uzasadnia zatem wszystko zmyślonym faktem. Discover the locations in the novel The Flames
This is impressive. For a debut, this is particularly impressive. A fictional tale torn from the real life pages of history. Just my kind of book. On top of the great story, characters and plot, there is some gorgeous writing and excellent scene setting. If this book were a cake I would EAT IT.
The book centres around the women who were muses of the artist Egon Schiele, a protege of Gustav Klimt, the artist who painted The Kiss. Egon is himself a controversial artist and his love for painting nude portraits leads to him becoming famous for all the wrong reasons. He is hounded and called every name under the sun. People judge him and the women he paints. Scandal follows him everywhere.
The novel cleverly doesn’t just look at him but in particulary at the women he painted.This is where Sophie Haydock has been particularly brilliantly clever. We meet four women in turn who speak and tell their story. Each one is unique, expertly drawn so they come to life both off the oage and the artist’s palette.
We have Adele and her sister Edith who are upper class. They spot Egon moving into the house opposite theirs and their fascination or is it obsession with him begins. Tragedy is just around the corner however and this was the thread I found the most interesting. The dynamic between the sisters and what happens when a man enters into their closed world.
Next we meet Egon’s sster Gertie who has a very controversial relationship with her brother. Then there’s Vally who in in a relationship with Egon for years and who is constantly by his side when others leave him. He avoids marrying her though and tends to keep her at arms length. At a time when marriage and women’s prospects were linked with men, this is hard to bear.
The title The Flames must surely refer to the inflammatory role this artist played in society at the time. It describes the women who are burnt by him, and scared. However it also looks the fire of unrequited love, of passion, betrayal and the inflammatory way Schiele’s art lit up the art world.
This book made me go wow. I want to read more about this artist now and the author has written a lovely little guide at the end detailing more information about the man and his art. I love worlds where fact and fiction mix and this is a great and atmospheric read

Akcja toczy w Wiedniu, na początku XX wieku. Rozkwita sztuka, a życie towarzyskie jest bardzo bujne. W światku artystycznym furorę zaczyna robić skandalista Egon Schiele. W jego otoczeniu są cztery kobiety, a raczej jego cztery muzy:
- zakochana w nim Adele;
- siostra Adele - Edith;
- siostra Egona - Gertrude;
- oraz modelka Wally.
Jak wiadomo, XX wiek to bardzo burzliwy okres, pod znakiem dwóch światowych wojen. Tutaj akcja bardzo szybko rozgrywa się wokół I wojny, która będzie mieć swój wpływ na zachowanie bohaterów.
Każda z wyżej wymienionych kobiet miała swój okres, gdzie była numerem jeden u Egona Schiele. Każda z nich miała istotny wpływ nie tylko na życie codzienne tego mężczyzny, ale również na to jak rozwijał się jego talent artystyczny. Adele, Edith, Gertrude oraz Wally mają swoje cele, marzenia, wyobrażenia odnośnie swojej przyszłości, a czas pokazuje, że dużo rzeczy nie może zostać spełnione.
Egon Schiele tworzy sztukę, przez wielu nieakceptowaną, w tym okresie - akty. Dla zwykłego zjadacza chleba to była zwykła pornografia, a modelka to pani lekkich obyczajów. To właśnie ta społeczna opinia jak również jej negatywny nacisk powodował, że mężczyzna jeszcze więcej tworzył, a jego modelkami były te jego najważniejsze kobiety. Jak można przypuszczać one również były na społecznym celowniku.
W tej powieści głos został oddany tym muzom. Obserwujemy ich decyzje, niepewność jutra, marzenia, ból, pragnienie bycia kochanym i samemu móc kochać z całego serca. Narracja przeplata się między bohaterkami, a niektóre wydarzenia możemy poznać równocześnie z dwóch perspektyw. Najbardziej trudną relacją jest oczywiście ta między siostrami, gdzie finalnie doszło do długoletniego konfliktu.
To była bardzo angażująca lektura. Od początku do końca czuć pasję, chęć ciągłego doskonalenia się, intensywne uczucia oraz klimat XX wieku. Powieść została napisana pięknym językiem, a ja przez całą fabułę czułam się oczarowana.

Książka bardzo mi się spodobała. Wspaniałe wykreowane postacie, motyw zazębiających się historii i wspomnień też na plus. Całego smaku dodaje fakt, że pomimo, iż jest to fikcja literacka, można wygooglać każdy z omawianych obrazów!

If it was the author's intent to bring this women to the fore to show how they influenced a debauched, narcissistic and misogynistic philanderer, then this really does not do it. All the women come off as similar - love becomes obsession before being callously discarded and abandoned for another woman. I felt no connection with any of them as they appear very one dimensional, and Ego Schielle himself I found repulsive in his depraved pursuit of very young women (girls even).
I did finish the book however, hoping to find some redeeming features, but left not really feeling it.

The Flames has some of the most memorable characters I’ve come across in the books I have already read in 2022 I felt as if I knew each of the women not just as Schiele’s muses but as individuals, I found all characters three dimensional and even though I didn’t love all the characters I did find them interesting and well suited for the plotline.

Miałam z początku ogromny problem, żeby wgryźć się w tę historię i w nią uwierzyć, ze względu na to, w jaki sposób jest napisana, bo dość sucha i trochę nijaka narracja, momentami tylko poetyczna, jej nie służy, ale z każdą kolejną stroną było lepiej.
Cieszę się, że mogłam poznać historię czterech kobiet, które odegrały ważną rolę w życiu Egona Schielego. Albo przynajmniej powyobrażać sobie, co mogły czuć i myśleć.

O boże o boże, aż nie jestem w stanie uwierzyć, że to debiut… Tak przepięknie napisana, tak wrażliwa i delikatna, ale w żadnym stopniu nie umniejszająca siły kobiet otaczających Egona Schielego. Wiele się mówi o wyczynach i aktach wspaniałości znanych artystów, ale często pomija się osoby dookoła nich, które są właściwie czynnikami napędzającymi istotę ich twórczości i samego w sobie życia. Cholera, uwielbiam historyczną fikcję taką jak ta. Jak łatwo było dać się nieść prądowi opowieści, wierzyć, że bohaterowie wypowiadali do siebie dokładnie takie słowa, że właśnie tak wyglądało ich życie? Kuszące skandale i dramaty, kuszące życiorysy, które do tej pory pozostawały w cieniu.
Jaki w rzeczywistości był Egon to jedno. Kim były jego kobiety i jak potoczyło się ich życie?
Gertrude Schiele jako pierwsza pozowała nago bratu.
Adele Harms popadła w obłęd z miłości.
Edith Harms nie chciała być wiecznie w cieniu.
Wally Neužil trwała wiernie u jego boku, dopóki jej nie odtrącił.
Książkę spina bardzo zręczna klamra kompozycyjna. Zaczyna się od młodej dziewczyny, która wjeżdża rowerem w staruszkę. Ich spotkanie staję się pretekstem do odkrycia przed czytelnikiem przeszłości – wszystkiego, co doprowadziło do obecnego stanu rzeczy.
Choć bohaterkami są kobiety i to ich uczucia tworzą kanwę dla całości, ciężko, aby w tym wszystkim nie wyłaniał się też i jego obraz.

Cholera, uwielbiam historyczną fikcję taką jak ta. Jak łatwo było dać się nieść prądowi opowieści, wierzyć, że bohaterowie wypowiadali do siebie dokładnie takie słowa, że właśnie tak wyglądało ich życie? Kuszące skandale i dramaty, kuszące życiorysy, które do tej pory pozostawały w cieniu.
Jaki w rzeczywistości był Egon to jedno. Kim były jego kobiety i jak potoczyło się ich życie?
Gertrude Schiele jako pierwsza pozowała nago bratu.
Adele Harms popadła w obłęd z miłości.
Edith Harms nie chciała być wiecznie w cieniu.
Wally Neužil trwała wiernie u jego boku, dopóki jej nie odtrącił.
Książkę spina bardzo zręczna klamra kompozycyjna. Zaczyna się od młodej dziewczyny, która wjeżdża rowerem w staruszkę. Ich spotkanie staję się pretekstem do odkrycia przed czytelnikiem przeszłości – wszystkiego, co doprowadziło do obecnego stanu rzeczy.
Choć bohaterkami są kobiety i to ich uczucia tworzą kanwę dla całości, ciężko, aby w tym wszystkim nie wyłaniał się też i jego obraz.

O ile podoba mi się pomysł oddania głosu kobietom, które historia często pomija, to samo wykonanie sprawia, że ta książka jest takim mocnym średniakiem. Mocnym, ale średniakiem. Oryginalny tytuł to The Flames, a mnie właśnie tu tego zabrakło: płomieni.
