River Witch

Rate this book
‘You and I are not ordinary folk, little mistress. We are wise. We call the river by her goddess name, Sabrina.’

In late 19th century England, Hester yearns for more than the simple routine of her father’s farm. She listens to the river's whispers and envies the freedom of the nymphs who ride the white horses of the tides, calling to her to join them.

When Hester succumbs to Sabrina’s song, she is snatched from the rising waters by wise man Aaron – a stranger powerful in herbal lore – and more.

Aaron becomes her reluctant, and secret, mentor. But when Hester suggests to her widowed mother that healing is a way to help feed the family, she is met with scorn and accusations of witchery.

Mother decrees Hester must marry to settle her down. Any husband will do. The rough-handed, lustful fisherman, all manners with Mother, cannot wait to bed the fey and beautiful girl.

But when Hester flees to Aaron, she finds him gone.

Abandoned, alone, Hester must fight for her dream, or lose all she has gained.

A story of fantasy, love, faith, forgiveness, and strength, Hester’s plight will keep you turning the pages late into the evening.

Inspired by the true story of Ellen Hayward, tried for witchcraft in the Forest of Dean in 1906.

Cheryl Burman grew up as the child forever reading on her bed. But as this was Australia, she was also often tempted outside to the beach and the yabby creeks near her suburban home.

When she moved to the Forest of Dean, UK, she followed the likes of Tolkien, Rowling and many others in being inspired to write. As a devout Narnia fan, she started with middle grade fantasy, discovered a taste for historical fiction, and then combined the two into historical fantasy.

Given she is lucky enough to live in a place chock-a-block full of history, legend and myth, there is much to draw on. She does so, as well as on her own childhood in Australia.

Two of her novels have won awards, as have several of her flash fiction pieces and short stories. Some of these are included in her two short story collections, while others are published in various anthologies.

River Witch by Cheryl Burman is the first book that I have read by this author so I was curious to find out what she could do with a story- and I was not disappointed.
This is a wonderful historical fantasy with magical realism, folklore, challenges, drama, plant-lore, herbalism, ‘witches’, suspense, interesting developments, vivid world building, angst, and more.
I was hooked by this story, it cast its spell on me and lured me further and further into all the fascinating details until I lost all sense of time and place, and ended up reading it all in one sitting. I so love it when a story captures me so completely…
Looking forward to exploring more of Ms. Burman’s work in the near future…
Happy Reading!

Thank you, Cheryl Burman!

A delightful adult fantasy not to be missed! ‘River Witch’ is a unique tale, with enough unexpected twists to hold a reader's interest, providing a truly enjoyable read. Without resorting to spoilers or recounting the plot, let me list the reasons I loved this novel:
1. An adventurous young girl remains true to her heart and follows her dreams: This is a story of courage in the face of intolerance, of love lost and found, and ultimately the triumph of love over ignorance. Despite being a period piece, the heroine is quite modern and allegorical.
2. High, lyrical language creates a sense of time and setting for this historical fantasy, and while anchoring the small river town characters in an era where fear of witchcraft and prejudice pervades the common folk, the prose deepens our understanding of the exceptional perceptions and whimsical yearnings that lift the life of a girl who can hear the river goddess above the deary, mundane expectations of her birth.
3. Fascinating medicinal lore and herbology, and wonderful descriptions of the craft of folk remedies. English countryside gardens come alive through the author’s descriptions.
4. An adult story with themes of abandonment, death, revenge, mistreatment, and friendships across class divides, all handled deftly by the author without resorting to melodrama. And the subtle fantasy elements, such as the murmurs of the goddess and the sight of churning water nymphs, weave the imaginary into the normal world for a believable narrative.
I really enjoyed this book--it is well-written and highly recommended.

River Witch is a beautifully written novel with an engaging and universal story. I loved that it continually conjured up such vivid images of its setting and it made me want to dive into the book and be in those fields and forests. The attention to detail regarding the descriptions of the use of medicinal herbs and potions really enriched the story too. Hester was such a strong yet relatable character, who carries such hardship, but yet remains sympathetic to those around her. You feel great frustration for how she is treated by others and how Hester navigates her plight kept me turning the pages late into the evening. The magical realism threads its way wonderfully throughout the story and finds a great balance between the supernatural and the real world, not letting either overpower the other and thus keeping you guessing as to where the story might go next. I highly recommend this book!

I received an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This book blew me away. The writing is exceptional, weaving beautiful imagery with a compelling story. I was willing Hester to succeed right from the start. As the story progressed, I couldn't stop reading as I was so desperate for Hester to get the ending she deserved. The characters were believable and well rounded, the historical detail and accuracy excellent.

I had never read a historical fantasy before and wasn't sure what to expect. The fantasy elements meshed seamlessly with the historical and I was pleasantly surprised by the genre.

Just as I started reading this book my kindle broke and I had to read on my phone. The fact that I enjoyed this book so much despite squinting at a small screen is testament to its quality! Highly recommend, a wonderful book!

Cheryl Burman's lyrical prose weaves a story of relatable characters with a strong inspiring lead. Secrets tumble out, giving pause for thought, allowing decisions to be re-examined leaving characters and readers questioning what will happen. The unexpected twists and turns are expertly handled. Each situation left me with a sense of understanding a little of the difficulties posed living in that period of history. Is Hester a witch? I will leave that for you to decide. I love Cheryl Burman's writing - maybe she cast a spell on me.

This was a really good read! The pacing was kind of slow at the beginning but once I got further into the story it picked up. I really enjoyed the imagery of this one. Everything is painted so beautifully in the mind, I felt like I was right there. The characters were interesting and enjoyable. I was drawn to this book first by the cover, then the synopsis, and the story made me stay. I'm glad I picked this one up and can't wait to read more from this author in the future!

River Witch by Cheryl Burman is a beautifully written fantasy novel. The descriptions of settings literally flow off the page into the reader's head. The details bring the scenes to life. For example, the sewing room with the jars of buttons and the threads in multiple colors are the trademark of an author that adds the right specifics to enrich the scene.

The main character, Hester, is strong and engaging. Her connection to Sabrina and the nymphs is lovely fantasy. We get to watch her growth and maturity as the protagonist in this moving story. She starts as a young farmer's daughter and matures to... (well, you'll have to read the book to learn that detail). The messages of Sabrina are a steady influence throughout the book.

There is so much to like about this novel. I stayed up several nights past my bedtime because I had to find out what happens next. The conflicts are believable. The characters are distinct. The story line is easy to follow. And again, the descriptions are lush and fully developed. This is a must read!

River Witch by Cheryl Burman tells the story of Hester, a farmer's daughter who wants to learn about herbs and be a healer, like her grandmother, to help the people she sees suffer. The river Sabrina whispers encouragement in her ear while her mother plans a marriage she hopes will settle Hester. Her only hope is Aaron, a powerful man who taught her the river's true name. Will he teach her or cast her away to be Ordinary Folk?
This was such a good date night book I highly recommend it! For one thing the cover art is absolutely ethereal and really drew my eye. It was also a wonderfully relaxing read with a nice flow and dynamic characters that you can't help but adore. The language Burman uses is absolutely beautiful and easily transports you to Shiphaven and the River Sabrina. The personification of the river herself and her secret name that only the wise unordinary folk know, was a really interesting way to bring life and magic to an otherwise ordinary world. I loved Hester's blinding strength and determination through adversity. It was so motivational, it's no wonder Sabrina spoke to her. I also really enjoyed Aaron’s character, every time I thought I figured him out something else would surprise me! This is a book that is so easy to get emotionally connected to with magic, mystery, love, herbal lore, and so much more that will make you want to fight for your own dreams!

This story is based on a true story of a woman who is skilled in healing and is accused of witchcraft in the early twentieth century as a result of her skillset. The way that Cheryl Burman turned a tale from where she lives into a beautiful story is simply amazing. It is my first read by this author and definitely not my last as she has a way with words and crafting a remarkable story that begged to be read.

This story follows the main character Hester from the time she was a young girl to her adult years with the trials and events that she went through. As a daughter to a farmer she longs for more than the life she lives. It is in this young age she hears the river and its nymphs calling to her. A man named Aaron prevents her from entering the river and becomes her teacher in the healing arts. This is frowned upon. This is witchcraft…but this is her calling. Hester's desire to forge her own path in life against the ideals of society has you rooting for her every step of the way. You simply cannot put down the book. Will Hester succeed in making her own destiny? Will the river that called her be a helper or a hindrance?

This book takes a more mature approach to fantasy. The writing is easy to follow and the story is multilayered as the adventure unfolds. Unexpected twists left me wanting more and eagerly turning the pages. The characters develop right along with the story and as Hester discovers more about what she wants, Aaron has to come to terms with his past. Hester is an easy to relate to character, her need to stay true to herself is endearing. If you are looking for a fantasy adventure with strong characters and an intriguing storyline, this is the book for you.

Tired of sitting helplessly while innocents and loved ones lose their lives, Hester follows a goddess's call and risks all to change fate.

**I received a free copy of this book courtesy of the author and Reedsy Discovery. Receiving a free copy of the book did not impact my review in any way. This is an honest, spoiler-free review, and all opinions expressed within are solely my own.**

Hester is a diligent farmer's daughter in all ways but one: she can't quit talking to the river.

Rather, the river won't quite talking to her. Sabrina, that is--the goddess whose form makes up the river.

River Witch follows young Hester's heart-wrenching growth from a pure-hearted, innocent child who cannot stand the injustice of death (especially when she feels she has the power to change it, thanks to a legendary healer's lineage) to an adult wrapped in all the complexities of a cruel, convoluted world.

Seeking freedom for herself (and her heart) after an arranged marriage is proposed, fighting against social stigmas and unfounded prejudices, and in the end embracing who she truly is (both good and bad), Hester is a courageous young woman with a powerful story to tell.

I adored the fact that a platonic friendship in this story is what 'saves the day' in so many instances. There is no love at first sight for Hester, but their is an unconditional love from a friend that transcends any romance. (Don't be too discouraged if you're a romance reader, though. There are still romantic subplots to be had.)

Burman brings to life the extraordinary power of what women who cease competition with each other and instead band together in respect, love, and good will can accomplish. The story is powerful and gripping, tackling hard themes such as estrangement from family, the harsh reality of not 'fitting in', and the worst aspects of superstitions in a way that is raw enough to pierce the heart, while being hopeful enough to make you need to keep reading more.

The only reason this is not a solid 5-star review is because of some formatting errors within the text, where two different scenes appear verbatim at different places in the same chapter, as well as some recurring editing things. This book is definitely worth putting up with a couple repeated scenes to read, though.

In a sweeping fantasy world, with magic and wives' tales entwined, Burman's The River Witch will challenge the way readers look at 'normalcy' and gossip while encouraging the best of what makes us human. A truly magical read!

This was such a fascinating story. It was more than witches and magic. Hester gave such life to the story with her determination and independence. Her desire to follow her fate and heed her calling was refreshing. The nymphs and river Sabrina believed she was meant for more and it was not to be ignored. Aaron was the mysterious stranger who would teach her the lore, and he would wear many hats within his time with Hester. Together this is fantastic story of fantasy, love, faith, forgiveness, and strength.

Hester feels the river (Sabrina) talks to her and she to it. She realises she is not one of the ‘ordinary folk’ (just like her grandmother) and she yearns for something other than the farming life. But her mother disagrees. As does Aaron — a young man with whom she has an affinity and trust.

Cheryl Burman tells us that this novel is inspired by the true story of a healing woman in the Forest of Dean: Ellen Hayward, who was tried for witchcraft as recently as 1906. River Witch does indeed deftly weave an ethereal magical realism with vividly drawn, believable characters. This creates a sophisticated mix between historical fiction and fantasy.

This duality between the fantastical with the real and rooted also runs parallel with the harsh contrast between industry and nature in the book. The landscape of the book — like the tone — is at times lyrical and magical and others harsh. This makes for compulsive reading.

There is a strong sense of place, with beautiful and vivid descriptions, which makes it immersive. I found myself caught up in Hester’s world and rooting for this independent character as she grew from child to woman.

However if, like me, you have read any others of Cheryl Burman’s work, you will know that she is not one to settle for a straightforward story arc or a simple happily ever after! Like Sabrina, the story rolls, and twists, and turns - leaving you desperate for Hester to reach the happy conclusion she yearns for.

If you’re ready to take a journey into an adult fantasy, then Cheryl Burman’s, River Witch, will be your ticket to a fantastical world steeped in local history. Burman’s inspiration for the main character, Hester, is loosely based on Ellen Hayward, a woman tried for witchcraft in 1906 in the Forest of Dean, UK. Knowing this fact before reading this story will bring a chilling, yet fascinating excitement.

Burman paints a realistic world of the common class during the early 1900s while weaving in a touch of magic. The reader gets to learn about the mysterious and eerie power of the river, Sabrina, along with Hester as she grows into adulthood.

And as a delicious side plot, Burman adds in a romance between Hester and the young man who teaches her how to cure and heal the sick. But be forewarned, this is not a straight line toward happiness plot. Hester goes through many hardships, and you won’t be able to put this book down because you’ll be rooting for Hester to find her place in life—to finally find her own powers.

This is not the first book I’ve read from this author, nor will it be my last.

This is the first book I have read by Cheryl Burman. The story starts when Hester is only 8 years old, she is at the river listening to it and watching the river nymphs play. A mysterious man appears wearing a yellow waistcoat, he tells her that the river is a goddess named Sabrina. She remembers him over the years, always thinking back to that day, learning the rivers name and the walk home as the man told her the names of flowers and what healing properties they have.

A time jump, Hester is now 14 years old, she is once again stealing a few moments away from her chores at home to watch the river. The river nymphs call out to her and finally she decides to give into them. Running down the cliffs to the water she barely reaches the edge the water crashing around her ankles the nymphs’ arms open wide to embrace her when the mystery man stops her once more. He is friendly at first until Hester says the nymphs invited her to join them, he acts as though he had tasted something sour the words “the nymphs invited her” never leaving his mind as winter comes and goes. Hester learns that her paternal great grandmother healed with herbs and flowers, remembering her first conversation with the mystery man she plans to ask him to teach her the ways. The POV changes off and on between Hester and the mystery man Aaron, we learn he is writing a book about the healing properties of herbs and flowers. When Hester asks him for help in learning about healing others after a 5-year-old little girl from the village dies he has an internal tug of war before telling her no. The phrase “the nymphs invited her” still dancing in his mind as he worried for Hester. Unable to stop himself he returns to a place of great pain for him, speaking to the memory of a person long gone. The spirit tells Aaron “She has the soul of a goddess. Sabrina will not be cheated a second time.”, the spirit talks reason into Aaron asking if he would rather Hester learn from the river nymphs or from him, because either way she would not be denied. Not giving up on the plan of learning about how to heal like her great grandmother, Hester asks about where the mystery man lives, as they still do not know each other’s names at this point in the story. Her brother Reuben tells her and without a second to change her mind she runs to his home, only Aaron has decided he must teach her before the nymphs. Hester entering his home he says “Well, is it too late to start lessons tonight, or do you have to be home for your mama to tuck you in and sing you a lullaby?”

Will Hester succeed in her journey to heal others? Will Aaron teach her all she needs to know, or will he hold back information to protect her? If you enjoy mysterious books that keep you guessing on what is coming next this is the book for you. I couldn’t stop reading as I was hungry for more answers with every page.

Hester's story begins when she is a young girl. She is the daughter of a farmer and granddaughter to healer. When she hears the river and its nymphs talking to her, inviting her to come play, a man named Aaron stops her from going into the river. He too, can hear the river and her nymphs. Hester's father often compares her to his grandmother with such fondness of tone, that she pursues Aaron and asks him to teach her how to use flowers and herbs to help heal people and animals. Unbeknownst to her family, she learns and excels in her pursuit of knowledge over many years. After a tragedy strikes the family, they are forced to move to town, away from the river and its callings. Hester feels her soul withering because she is so far from the river and Aaron. Her mother and brothers set a scheme to marry her off to a fisherman to avoid any gossip surrounding Hester and her strange behaviours. All Hallow's Eve changes everything for Hester, though. She determines to take control of her life. When she has to deal with the consequence of her actions, however, she finds that Aaron has left town, her wedding is looming, and she feels lost. She hears the river telling her to "Be strong. Do what you have to do."So she does. She leaves the relative safety of her home and sets out on her own path. The challenges that she faces alone and overcomes is heartening and heartbreaking all at the same time. Can she make it alone? Will the river help her? Protect her? Or will it abandon her like she feels Aaron and her family has?

This is my first time reading this author. I truly enjoyed the story. I was drawn into the story almost instantly. The struggles of the time period were well written, as were the family dynamics and strife. I couldn't help but love Hester and root for her. Once she knew what she wanted, she went for it and unapologetically pursued it. I was glad that everything came back around for her in the end and she felt the support of her community after feeling abandoned for so long. The fact that it is loosely based on a true story, only makes it that much sweeter of a read.

I really enjoyed this story. The author does an amazing job with creating the story. The author's writing is captivating and very descriptive which makes the reader actually feel like that are part of the story. You can imagine the fields and river and see the river nymphs. Such beautiful writing. I also love our lead character Hester. Through the story we see her grow up and mature and become determined to follow the path of her dreams instead of the life her mother has planned for her.

Hester is a daughter of a farmer. Her grandmother used to create medicinal positions from herbs and flowers to help people. Back in her day her grandmother would have been considered a witch. This however is what Hester feels is her calling?
Is this the path the River godess Sabrina has planned for Hester?
Not according to Hesters mum. In her eyes Hester needs to stop dreaming and focus on finding a decent husband and becoming a wife.

Hester is determined that's not going to happen so she leaves to find the mysterious man who keeps popping into her life.
Aaron is a mysterious man who has knowledge about the herbs and plants as well as the magic of the river. This is the knowledge that Hester wants. However when she finds him he turns her away.

What is holding Aaron back from sharing his knowledge? What's happened in his past that is stopping it? And without Aaron's help will Hester ever realised her dream and the river goddesses wish being able to heal using plants and herbs?

This story is full of twists and turns which will keep the reader guessing and it will also leave you asking questions about what you are reading as you go through Hesters journey of discover to find her purpose and realise her dream.

From a young age Hester has always been different. She spends her time talking to the River. When she was only 4 years old, Hester met a strange man by the name of Aaron. He knows a lot about herbs and flowers and of their uses. He also can hear the voice of the river which is actually a goddess by the name of Sabrina.

Once Hester is older, her mind starts to wonder to the man she met years prior and of his knowledge. Her great grandmother healed the sick and hurt with her knowledge on plants and potions. Hester wants to be just like her. Hester decides to seek Aaron to teach her his ways. At first he is reluctant but once he realizes Hester will not stop until she gets her way, he decides to start lessons with her.

Hester's mother has always been against natural remedies as it is seen as witch-like. She just wants Hester to be a normal lady, find a husband and birth his children. As Hester gets older, her mothers ambitions get stronger and Hester wants to flee the life her mother has laid out for her. She runs to Aaron only to find he agrees with her mother. He thinks it would be safer if they cease their lessons and Hester should go on to be a bride. This does not bode well with her and she decides to do everything in her power to get what she wants.

This book was not at all what I was expecting but in a good way. The synopsis doesn’t give this book justice. There is so much going on within the book and in different points of view which makes it even more interesting. I loved Hester, she was strong and independent (well as much as one could be in that day in age as a woman). She was determined and humble.

The only downfall for me personally is I found the book very repetitive. I found myself starting to read ahead when it started to say the same things which made immersing myself completely into the world hard.

River Witch by Cheryl Burman is a beautifully written story of a girl named Hester Williams, who at a very young age, is drawn into the waters by the song of the river and the playful river nymphs. It is there that she meets Aaron, a quiet young man skilled in herbal lore, who stops her from wading into the river to play with the nymphs. The story continues to follow Hester as she matures into a young woman that aspires to be a wisewoman, curing others of ailments with the healing properties of herbs and flowers with the knowledge Aaron has bestowed her. After she goes against the wishes and attempts of her mother to tame her by refusing to marry local fisherman Jem Stokes, Hester finds herself with limited places to turn to and a trail of tribulations ahead and left in her wake.

This was an absolutely magnificent read that I struggled to put down. I was captivated by the author’s beautiful and articulate writing, which fabricated this captivating tale. The characters were unique and fascinating, and they all came together perfectly to weave this story into something truly remarkable in my opinion. Everything was so well descripted that it was so easy to feel like I was in the story with them, witnessing everything unfold. I was honestly sad the story ended because I loved the main characters so much! While I might be crossing my fingers for another book in the future featuring all of them again, the closing of the story was perfect. I truly did not expect to love this book as much as I did. It has the perfect mix of a little bit of everything. If you ask me, it deserves all the stars!

I’m a sucker for detailed writing, interesting phraseology, and uncommon metaphors.

Cheryl Burman’s novel River Witch is a novel loosely based on a “wise woman” accused and tried of witchcraft in England in 1906. The author brought the meaning of the word “witch” to the fore in an intriguing manner.

I well-appreciated the protagonist’s name: Hester, calling to mind the main character Hester Prynne from Hawthorne’s classic, The Scarlet Letter. Because she, too, is the personification of profound inconsistencies: holy yet sinful.

Burman incorporates the name and usage of local herbs, flowers, etc., such as “Belladonna” which “aids in forgetting past loves.” This is poignant as well as instructional to Hester because it comes from her instructor in the arts, Aaron, who has suffered the loss of a great love.

The author utilizes repetition lyrically to keep the reader on track: aware of past, present, and possible future scenes. Also, these repetitions serve as mini-flashbacks or as hints replete with foreshadowing of the characters’ actions.

I am not particularly a fan of fantasy fiction, however, Burman’s story is sufficiently convincing to allow the reader to suspend disbelief and become thoroughly entrenched in the tale.

And most pleasing to the eye—the cherry on top of the cake—is the book’s layout with the intricate and attractive beginning letter to start each chapter. Brava!

Therefore, I am most heartily recommending this book for all lovers of historical fantasy fiction!

This is a wonderfully written story, inspired by the true story of a ‘wise woman’, skilled in healing who was accused of witchcraft in the early 20th century, in the Forest of Dean, where the author lives. This engaging story focuses on a farmer’s daughter, Hester, who dreams of more, as she envies the freedom of the river nymphs and hears Sabrina’s whispers of “Be wise, be strong”. Hester believes that the healing wisdom of fields and forest is what Sabrina wants her to do, and this is reinforced when she meets a man powerful in herbal lore, Aaron. However her mother scorns her daughters dreams and ambitions as ‘witchery’, and orders Hester to find a husband and settle down.
Hester flees to Aaron but is surprised when he too insists that she should marry and be like ‘ordinary’ folk. Hester is a strong, independent and determined heroine and she fights for her dreams. Meanwhile, Aaron has to reconcile his past if he’s to accept the future, and the river will either help or hinder them both. This is a captivating story which had me hooked all the way through. The detailed descriptive narrative brought the setting vividly to life, making me feel immersed in the storyline. The plot twists kept me gripped, and I found myself reading late into the night, as I could not put this book down. The characters are so well defined, I felt like I was there alongside them, and I was left thinking about Hester, long after I had closed the book.

This was a great read, it had a fantasy aspect to it, as well as a strong realistic point of view. The author knew how to draw the reader in, and keep them there till the end. The book kept me interested, and made me wonder and reflect on a lot of things within myself. Enjoyed the build up character development as well.

I love how Hester had dreams and longings and only wanted to make them happen. Aaron, had issues he needed to work through, till he was feeling, well whole. i identify as a green witch, so I was head over heels with the talks of herbs and remedies that were talked about and used within the story! Loved that. It fit in nicely as well with the story! I loved how the story had realistic points of how we cannot hide from who we are, or what we have done. It makes us who we are. I found that intriguing and haunting both at the same time. Character development was strong and the story developed at a good pace. I was left wanting more by the time I reached the end! This was a great and very enjoyable read Personally, I loved it!

Great read by a author who knows how to craft and make a great story with characters come to life. I look forward to reading more by this author! This book alone is a must read. Defiantly a high recommendation!

An excellent combination of fantasy and history. This is the first book I have read by the author Cheryl Burman, and she did not disappoint. The story begins with the main character Hester, at 8 years old listening, talking and playing with the river. But Hester understands the river on a different level than the normal person, and she thought she was the only one until she met a mysterious man one day who said he could also talk to and understand Sabrina, the river. The man follows Hester throughout the years in her thoughts. There is a time jump, and then the POV changes back and forth between Hester and the mystery man, Aaron. Hester wants to learn about healing others naturally. There is a little romance added with Hester. This is not a straight away happily ever after, there is a good bit of learning and hardships Hester must go through. I could not put this book down and was constantly finding myself cheering for Hester to find her place, her happiness, and her own abilities. Cheryl did an amazing job with character development as well at describing the setting. I highly recommend this book!

River Witch by Cheryl Burman

This is the first book I've read by the author. River Witch had me hooked from the beginning and I didn't want it to end. The characters were life-like and it really felt like I was standing in the same place as them.

Aaron has let one person down. He doesn't want to do that to Hester. Then when he goes home he finds that he's to blame. The quote I chose for Aaron is: "Your faith in me was wrong. I failed her, I wasn’t good enough, strong enough. When it came to the time… When the time came…when I should have followed her…I couldn’t… If there’d been two of us…if there’d been twice the power…"

Hester loves to listen to the river. She talks to the river and the goddess that resides there. Sabrina. That's what they call the river. The quote I chose for Hester is: ‘If she wouldn’t come to me when I was birthing Ellen, when I truly needed her… The hurt runs deep and I’m sorry for it. I simply couldn’t do it, not for all the houses and feather mattresses in the world, I couldn’t marry that man."

Highly recommended for Historical Witch lovers.

This book is Beautiful. Just absolutely beautiful. I read this while recovering from surgery and let me to you no matter how tired I was, I wanted to keep reading.
The story follows Hester, and from the start we are made aware that she is different from those around her. She yearns to be a healer and seeks to do so through herbal practices. Her mother and brother do not like this snd they believe her to be a witch, and believe that forcing her to marry someone from town will help her settle and be normal. Marrying is not something that she wants, especially the person that her family has chosen for her.
At some point she meets Aaron who also knows a lot about healing with herbs and teaches her some things. Including the name of the River that continues to call out to Hester since childhood. The River's name is Sabrina and she seems to be trying to guide Hester through life towards a goal.
I love that this isn't just a happy go lucky whimsical story. The treatment of Hester during her time period is very realistic of what women went through back then. And the author did an amazing job of merging history with fantasy. 5/5 stars from me. Please grab a copy now!

Where to begin? I loved this story so much.

Hester lives a bland, dreary life as the daughter of a poor farmer. Her days consist of endless chores overseen by a particular mother and overbearing brothers. Despite the hopelessness of her future, she finds joy in the relationship she shares with Sabrina, the goddess of the river. Then she meets Aaron, the first person who seems to understand the pull Hester feels.

Aaron opens news doors for Hester, and she dives into his teaching with enthusiasm. Anything to take her mind off the lumpen fisherman her mother wants to marry her off to.

But Hester lives in a superstitious time ruled by men. And these men don't take kindly to her independent ways.

You will cheer for Hester as she steps out in a bid for independence and the chance to plot the path of her life. Once you start reading, Burman's detailed descriptions will pull you in. You'll surface hours later wondering where your garden path and your river nymphs have disappeared to.

Get this book! But only if you have several hours to set aside. Enjoy!
