The NOT Series #3

Not Going There

Rate this book
From the #1 Amazon and Wall Street Journal bestselling author of the Anchor Island series, Terri Osburn offers up a new romantic comedy with her trademark heart, hope, and a whole lot of humor.

I can’t believe I got fired.

Streamlined right out the door with nothing but my belongings in a box and my brain in shock. What I didn’t need in that moment was a nosy man doling out unsolicited business advice, and yet, that’s what I got. Work for yourself, he said. Don’t be a pencil pushing schmuck, he said.

What if I liked being a schmuck? Okay, that sounds wrong, but you know what I mean.

How was I going to climb the corporate ladder without the corporate part? Well, since no one would even give me an interview, I had no choice but to figure it out. That’s right, I started my own business, and I bet you can guess who my first client turned out to be.

So advice guy has a name—Miles—and he’s everything I’m not. Childlike. Easygoing. Laid-back to the point of making a sloth look anxious. But he’s also creative, charming, and kind of a genius.

On paper, he isn’t my type at all. And yet, I find myself enjoying our time together more than I’m willing to admit. Still, I can't possibly fall for him. Not only is Miles my client, but he and my family are as different as night and day.

So...we are not going there. Even if I really, really want to.

An enemies-to-lovers, opposites attract rom-com about friends, family, and falling in love. Includes bouts of witty banter and tons of sexual tension all delivered steam free.

This one was just ok for me. I liked the characters, but had a hard time buying the romance between Josie and Miles. They argued so much at the start about stupid stuff, both were hiding a lot from each other, that when they started to date, issues came up and they still didn't share. I'm glad things ended well for them, but mostly glad to be done with the book too.

‘Not going there’ is the third book in the ‘Not’ series. You don’t have to read the previous books in the series, this book (just like the other two stories) can perfectly be read as a standalone. This series is about five women who are best friends and support each other in good and bad times and in each book one of them find love. These stories are a combination of woman fiction and a sweet, ‘clean’ romance story. There are no sex scenes in these stories.

It’s so lovely to see the five friends Becca, Josie, Donna, Megan and Lindsey again. In the two previous stories we got to see how Becca and Megan found love and now it’s Josie’s turn.
The best way to describe Josie is as a hardworking career woman, very organized and focused on her goals. So it’s a big shock to her when she gets fired (or as her boss describes it ‘streamlined’). Luckily Josie can count on her best friends and even a stranger to cheer her up and give her advice her on what to do next. Although it would be easy to ask for help from her rich and powerful family, Josie wants to go her own way. So after some thinking she follows the advice and begins her own bookkeeping company and to her surprise her first client is the stranger that she met the day that she got fired. Miles Porter is the owner of Hullabaloo, a company that plan kids’ party. (He’s just like Becca an event planner but only for children). From the beginning Josie and Miles like to argue, they can’t seem to agree with each other on anything but the more time Josie and Miles spend together the more Josie sees Miles with new eyes, Miles may wear old clothes and ride an old car (and he certainly knows how to push her buttons and make her mad) but he also has a good heart and make her question herself and her view on life. Everything is going great, Josie is enjoying her new carrier and her chance on a new love when a family emergency turns her life upside down and a misunderstanding arises between her and Miles. Does she and Miles have a chance or will her family come between them?

Because you only get Josie’s POV, you learn more about her thoughts and feelings than Miles’s. But from the beginning it’s obvious that Miles is the total opposite of Josie. He’s easy-going, artistic, relaxed, patient and wants to bring joy to children. But he and Josie also share some things, they are both hard workers, intelligent, they have their own company and they are loyal and caring towards their friends and family. I really liked both character and enjoyed the banter between them. It was very entertaining. Miles playfulness was perfect for Josie’s pragmatic thinking. They made a cute couple. Josie may come from a rich family but unlike her mother and older sister she isn’t a snob. Yes, she sometimes makes wrong assumptions about Miles but they are understandable mistakes. She really tries her best and she can be very stubborn but she can admit when she’s wrong.

It’s lovely to see the other girls again and to see how they are doing. In this story we meet a lot of other great secondary characters too. You have Miles’s employees. They are just like him playful, creative, friendly and loyal. I really like how they behave towards Josie (except Kendra but she has her personal reasons for that). Miles’s niece Chelsea is also a wonderful character. Miles and Josie’s family aren’t so friendly or supportive. They all had their own difficult personality and own ideas about certain things. (But I think that goes for many families.)

Just like the two other books, ‘Not going there’ was a light and sweet read. A few emotional family themes were discussed but nothing dramatic. I personally thought that they gave the story more depth. There were also a few funny scenes in the story, that had me smiling. Just like the other two stories, I enjoyed this one very much.

‘Not going there’ is a good addition to the series. I’m already looking forward to the next story.

Dare I say…the best of the NOT series so far? And they’ve ALL been great…

Josie Danvers is smart, organized, very hard-working. Her family has money and is known in Pittsburgh. Yet, surprise! She’s just been “streamlined” right out of her job. Carrying her box of personal items back home, she’s accosted by a man who looks almost homeless. Why go back working for someone else, he asked. Start your own business. Not wanting to engage him in conversation, she nonetheless assures him that she couldn’t. Not did she want to, although IF she wanted to, she would be able to. He assures her that with the attitude she has, she wouldn’t be able to. In a huff, she grabs her box and dashes away. Weeks later, with no interviews, much less job offers, in hand, and when her friends and even her sister suggest the same thing, she begins to consider the possibility. Then the friend of a friend finds her a first client. Just what she need to get word of mouth to find more clients. Off she goes, only to find the client is… Yes, Mr. Unsolicited Advice.

Miles Porter has need for a temporary bookkeeper, so when his friend suggests a friend of his girlfriend’s, Miles agrees to interview her. Imagine his surprise when Ms I-Want-To-Be-Part-Of-The-Corporate-Wheel steps into his office. No matter. She seems to know what she’s doing and thinks she can straighten out the mess his former assistant left him with in six weeks. Deal struck. If only they could stop bickering long enough to get to know each other as well as they both know their business.

I loved this book. I truly enjoyed the previous NOT series books, but thus far, this is my favorite. Ms Osburn’s fine writing always engages the reader, and romance is off the charts in all of her books, but I also enjoy humor and banter between characters and Not Going There delivers them in spades. I loved the book and I think you will, too. Highly recommended!

This was just ok, and a little forgettable. If you read this as chick lit, you’ll enjoy it more. If your expectations include romance, you’ll be disappointed.

I think the biggest issue is that the main characters don’t really have that many interactions or conversations with any substance, so by the time they get together I was just confused because what did they see in each other? Where was the chemistry?

Again, an ok book but I just didn’t feel anything.

My rating is closer to a 3.5, but I adore Josie so I’m rounding it up to a 4/5. I actually really liked both Josie and Miles, and their dynamic together. Like, negotiating a first date? Love it. It just fit for them and their fun, playful bantering.

What lost me a bit was the side characters. I really do like the friend group that this series is based on, and I’m bummed that I didn’t like the other women very much with this book, after loving them in the last two. I really disliked that they seemed to just keep ignoring Josie’s thoughts and feelings! I am all for friends trying to push someone out of their comfort zone, but she literally was sitting alone, ignored, while they tried to decide what business she should start after she repeatedly said she doesn’t want to start her own business. And then when she told them about Miles, they pushed so far that she literally had to leave for them to even consider taking her seriously (and I’d argue that they didn’t actually do so even after that). I really didn’t like any of that, which dropped my rating.

I like this series a lot, and will absolutely read the rest as they come out. I don’t want this review to just seem negative so I want to repeat that this still was a really enjoyable read for me, because I adored the main characters and their romance. The typical romance ‘third act break up’ felt understandable to me, and I’m glad that things got cleared up quite quickly. It’s frustrating when that can drag on, and I’m glad that that wasn’t the case here.

Terri Osburn, you did it again. This is another winner for you. I loved the relationships in this book. They were everything you want in your own life and even a few you really don't. So much fun.

Josie Danvers comes from an uppity wealthy family. I personally don't think she ever really paid much attention to that fact. She was living her life, planned out, climbing the corporate ladder. This was her world, and she was taking it by storm. Then one day all of a sudden, she wasn't. The new players at her company decided she had to go, and she was let go. No more plan and no more ideas for how to live her life. Until someone makes a suggestion.

Miles Porter, wears last year's clothes. Drives a car kept together with tape. He is also the owner operator of Hullabaloo, a kid's party planning company. Meets Josie by chance, makes her crazy. Eventually becoming part of her life.

Josie and Miles meet, talk and make one another crazy. They are both honest & stubborn but there is also something simmering just under the surface. Miles will become her client which allows them to get to know each other. The entire time it is funny, a bit sad too. But they make for an unusual pair.

Josie has her group of girlfriends who are a riot, they all end up together lots in this book. Two of them are from the first two books in this series. I really enjoyed this book. I read it in 2 nights. It was a very easy fun book to read. I am not saying anything else. You need to read it for yourselves. Enjoy.

I think these are the most unlikeable characters I have ever read. It made no sense at all that Josie and miles ended up together. They actually can’t stand each other and it’s not in an “enemies to lovers” way. They just genuinely don’t like each other and for good reason. Miles is actually the worst and is so rude to Josie in every encounter. Every character says “miles is so caring and romantic. We all respect him!!” But then there isn’t a single interaction that proves this to be true.

Actually do not get me started on her family. Why would you stay in contact with people like that? Her internal monologue is basically “I hate these people they have no hearts and are complete narcissists” but then outwardly shes saying “I love my family I will always be there for them” bro what. For why.
Francis is constantly saying “how could you know?? You’re never here!” And yet Josie has dinner with them 1-2 times a week. That is so much for a family of adults. We read more dinner scenes with her family then we read interactions between her and miles. Make it make sense.

The other books in this series were great! I loved them and then this one was so awful. Idk how that happened.

Josie Danvers it smart, hard working and on her way to climb the corporate ladder. Until she is streamlined out of her job. Now the daunting task of starting over. Only a stranger on the bus tells her she should start her own business. With the help of her besties, she was given a referral. Only she finds out it's the man from the bus. Miles Porter has started a business catering birthday parties for kids only. When the two meet, she is thinking hell no. He is not pleased either. They are like oil and vinegar. Until they actually grow on each other. Opposites attract.

Loved this book and thoroughly enjoying the series!

Josie loses her job and she feels like no one understands her. Her friends and a stranger tell her to start her own business. When she gets a tip that a guy needs a bookkeeper, she meets the stranger again. Josie thinks her and the stranger, Miles have nothing in common, but they actually have a lot in common. Josie's friends are great! Josie's sister, Franny, accuses her of only seeing what she wants to see, so Josie starts noticing things around her and realizes her sister was right. Josie starts realizing what a great guy Miles is. This was a really good book!

business or pleasure

Aww, a good heartwarming story. Miles met Josie o the incline heading home after being streamlined or fired from her job. Miles and Josie had a little conversation about corporate business and starting her own business. Which she eventually did. Quests who turn out to be her first client. Yeah that’s right Miles. There was an attraction for one another but but being a client and relationship was just unprofessional. More to story not totally a spoiler.

Josie is a hardworking auditor who is very devoted to her job. Unfortunately, she is downsized. On the way home she tells her story to a fellow traveler and he suggests that she start her own firm. She ignores his advice. In a meeting with her supportive friend group, they suggest the same. After weeks of not being able to find a job, she decides to try self-employment. Her first client is a referral who turns out to be the man who originally suggested she start her business. This was a satisfying story and a great addition to the series. It works fine as a standalone.

I really enjoyed this book about Josie, who is Miss Corporate America and Miles, who is a creative self-made business man. Josie gets fired right at the beginning of the story. Luckily, she has a supportive group of friends, with a less supportive family. Both make assumptions about each other, at various stages of their relationship, but finally talk it out and work it out.

...Okay nevermind I will tell you, this is a good book and I find myself personally inspired to look into starting a business. The characters are fun and I do enjoy all of Terri Osburn's books so you can't go wrong in picking this series to read next if you enjoy reading about strong friendships, finding yourself and love.

not all is perfect

Having the perfect job, the perfect family, and the perfect romance will never be found. Life is full of adventures so in this romance finding a job that works, best, love and truth within the family, and a lovely romance can be. I enjoy the friendship group, the story line, and writing skills of Terri Osborn and I think you will too.

Easy, Funny, Romantic Read

I’ve read all three NOT books and thoroughly enjoyed them. They’re light rom-coms with an end you know is coming. Not as sappy as Hallmark movies, but along the same lines. If you need something silly to read, highly recommend Terri Osburn’s NOT series. (I haven’t read any of her other books yet. Hope they’re just as fun.)

Third in the series of a group of friends who are there for each other no matter what. Josie and Miles story seemed rushed. I would have liked to have more about them together. I know it’s a rom-com but the story seemed rushed unlike the other books.

The heroine is not particularly likeable & the author (has the other characters) points out all her idiosyncrasies. She's judgmental & a bit of a stick in the mud. She looks down on the hero just because he dresses simply in old clothes.
