Intriguing plot

And intriguing characters. A sparse style of writing that is both honest and refreshing ( occasional typos make me think that this is only the author speaking--not betas). It's orriginal. I went right to the sequel.

Almost 50 Years

The above phrase or similar were repeated too many times to count and really had me annoyed by the end of the relevant event in the book. Storyline was very predictable, except the pace was so slow, almost nothing of interest occurred. Too many factual or perhaps, more kindly, continuity errors occurred; mother borrowed a car/owned a car, 63/62 percent in exam, etc. I read this in a few hours and I was counting the minutes left with relief towards the end. Can't recommend purchasing but if you have KU you might fill some time reading this, but don't expect much.

2/5

1980ish. Closeted, bullied Peter - via his therapist, somehow - goes to a fancy boarding school, Redwood, and falls for rich rower Dalton.

Poor. A small, bland cast and a rather pedestrian plot, a lot of which takes place away from Redwood. Some unrealistic teenage stupidity, eg Peter knowing a character hates him and lies to him (for no obvious reason) but still believes him about something, until he doesn't. Feels like it's there to bulk up a low word count.

Very slow burn

There are slow burn books, but this one burns so slow at times it's hard to think anything is actually going to happen to make this an LGBT romance. I suppose it's on to the second book with the hope that Harrison and his love interest (I don't want to spoil anything) will wind up having something more than a g-rated platonic friendship.

Very sweet and cute story.

I loved this story of two boys from very different backgrounds and their slow burn romance. I was a scholarship boy at a privileged English public school so I can identify with Peter to some extent. Will read the sequel next!

Snobby, Yet Charming

Great story. Can't wait to read the next book in the series. It's amazing how the author brought the very upper class together with the commoner in a very snobby setting. I found it difficult to put the book down.

Up Stairs, Down Stairs

Standard plot of the haves vs the have nots, but with a gay twist. There are some editing issues and a few story lines that are unnecessary to move the plot. Overall, there’s great potential with the story. 3.0 for limited pressings.

Can’t believe I nearly didn’t read these 3 books. Amazing had me laughing and crying. Lesson for me about taking some reviews with a pinch of salt - we all have different tastes but this trilogy isn’t long and def worth a go

Awesome!

Peter and Prescott come from very different worlds and it takes time for them to figure out that they are more similar than they thought. As always love wins out. Bravo!

Don’t appreciate the clear goal of selling more books with that no ending end. Won’t work for me.

The story is pretty short, but quite cute! Gonna read the second one to see how Peter and Dalton’s story ends anyway 🥰

I have only given this three stars because, I feel it being a shorter story the characters and plot have a lot more growing to do so I think I’ll review the series as a whole when I’m finished.

Redwood Boys brutally reminds us what it was like to be queer in the eighties. The characters are mostly complex and interesting (Peter and Dalton are wonderful, Weaver is only missing a mustache to twirl). The setting, from small town poverty to exclusive stuffy school works well. How the story unfolds is enveloping and delivers an enjoyable time. The writing goes from great turn of phrase to terrible typos and unfinished thoughts. It’s like a great story which was dictated as it was written and never edited. It’s unfortunate because the book is really good.

I went right into the sequel.

This book (and, honestly, the entire series) really hit me, and that's not easy to do these days. It's a good length--you could probably finish the entire three-book series in a week, if not a weekend--and it's written with heart. Do yourself a favor and stop reading reviews, and just read the book instead!
