God, I'm emotional right now. That was a rollercoaster of grief, pain, sadness and a fair bit of happiness as well… but it was underneath all the sh1t.
I have to say it was a surprising because it didn't follow the usual plot twists that come with the deceased spouse storyline.
Some examples :
- There was no Insta-love which was honestly so refreshing. I feel like sometimes authors want to move on to the why-choose aspect of a book, before dealing with the person’s grief. The fmc wasn't constantly talking about the guys appearance also, she obviously noticed, but she was mostly just focused on her baby.
- The guys were also not obsessed with her straight-away, it took time. They were naturally very caring and wanted to just be there.
- She wasn't hateful. There was no blame-game happening and she was quite a rational thinker. She wasn't consumed by grief and was a very strong character (also very witty).
- I appreciated the lack of romance/ sexual tension or anything in this book. If it would have occurred, it would have felt inappropriate and forced. There was a lot of tentative moments and that was enough.
The harem was a nice mix of guys. From Huxley, constantly trying to make her laugh to Matt, who she would have screaming matches with. A nice mix 😂
I do have to say, I did hate the nicknames, but that is just a personal preference for me. Momma, Banshee and Angel are not my favourites.
The fmc was so likeable in a kind of unlikable way. She could be brash and rude, but at the same time super compassionate and funny. I mean the fact she kept renaming everyone she met, because she forgot their names was a sweet little quirk.
I also liked how unique this plot was. Well it felt unique to me. It felt like a new take on a why choose.
Props to the author. I’m going to book 2.
