Allison—

My world was wrapped in the comfort and security of Devon and the life that we were building together after overcoming infertility. He was the better half between us, and I was excited to bring another part of him into the world through our child. But, when Devon attempts to stop a mugging and is killed, the man my husband died to save and his brothers are forcing me to survive, refusing to have another innocent’s blood on their hands.

There’s Huxley, the computer and business genius Devon saved who pushes the boundaries for me.

David, the doctor that pulled the bullet out of my side only after our agreement, who looks at me like a test subject.

Vyk, the caretaker who refuses to let his cheerful attitude be extinguished by the darkness around him and makes the best bacon.

and,

Blue-Eyes, their unspoken leader that is intent on keeping me out of their world and is straining to keep a hold on his control.

Adopted by Weston Graves in their teens, they were raised to be upstanding citizens by day and illegal smugglers by night. They understand the darkness that lurks in the city's underside and insist on keeping me under their protection. I’ll stay with them until the threat against me is eliminated and if they let me set the retribution price for Devon’s life.

What do I want?

I want to be in the room when the man who murdered my husband is killed.

Warning: This book is a dark romance that is intended for mature audiences. There are scenes of torture and extreme grief included within the text that may-not be suitable for children under 17.

God, I'm emotional right now. That was a rollercoaster of grief, pain, sadness and a fair bit of happiness as well… but it was underneath all the sh1t.

I have to say it was a surprising because it didn't follow the usual plot twists that come with the deceased spouse storyline.

Some examples :

- There was no Insta-love which was honestly so refreshing. I feel like sometimes authors want to move on to the why-choose aspect of a book, before dealing with the person’s grief. The fmc wasn't constantly talking about the guys appearance also, she obviously noticed, but she was mostly just focused on her baby.

- The guys were also not obsessed with her straight-away, it took time. They were naturally very caring and wanted to just be there.

- She wasn't hateful. There was no blame-game happening and she was quite a rational thinker. She wasn't consumed by grief and was a very strong character (also very witty).

- I appreciated the lack of romance/ sexual tension or anything in this book. If it would have occurred, it would have felt inappropriate and forced. There was a lot of tentative moments and that was enough.

The harem was a nice mix of guys. From Huxley, constantly trying to make her laugh to Matt, who she would have screaming matches with. A nice mix 😂
I do have to say, I did hate the nicknames, but that is just a personal preference for me. Momma, Banshee and Angel are not my favourites.

The fmc was so likeable in a kind of unlikable way. She could be brash and rude, but at the same time super compassionate and funny. I mean the fact she kept renaming everyone she met, because she forgot their names was a sweet little quirk.

I also liked how unique this plot was. Well it felt unique to me. It felt like a new take on a why choose.

Props to the author. I’m going to book 2.

Dnf @40%. I kept reading in the hope that it'd get better but my hope gave out before it could.

Pro :

1) The cover is really pretty and the reason why i picked this up.

Cons:

1) The pregnancy stuff in so much detail ......not for me.

2) The fast shifts in the POV ie... the constant back and forth between "Allison & Devon's normal life/memories" and "the guys' mafia life" was jarring. It was confusing plus irritating me and getting me out of my reading zone.

3) The potential of angst in this story was MASSIVE but it wasn't fulfilled, in my opinion. I was more annoyed than sad.

4) Allison seemed to just instantly snap out of her trauma and grief after two weeks only, given the way she was suddenly being bratty and sarcastic and joking all around. But hey, we have all heard that "grief is different for everyone" so ....what do I know. 🌚

5) There are a lot of editing mishaps.

Wow - what a great debut. Allison and her husband are finally pregnant, and decide to take a quick vacation - but when he runs to try to help a man, Huxley Graves, from being beat, he is killed and Allison is shot. The Graves men- Huxley, David, Lachlan, and Matthew -take her to help her. This is a slow burn, but I loved seeing their connections grow. Allison has survived the horrific loss of her husband, and is fighting to keep their child. She is growing close to them, but mentally is still dealing with her loss and the ptsd from what occurred. I kind of expected the twist at the end, but I’m still hooked and can’t wait for book 2!

This book has 5 different POV. This normally would put me off the book, but it made this book amazing. You get the gut wrenching emotions from Allison from losing her husband and how she’s adjusting or not adjusting. You also get to witness the friendship bond through each person.
I’m not a big crime family reader either, but these guys you fall in love with and want to see good things happen to.
I’m invested and want to know what happens next!
I devoured this book in a 24hr span. It now ranks up there as one of my favorite books!
This is the authors first book and I’m super impressed. I can’t wait to read more from her.

Franchement ridicule.

I'm the kind of reader who enjoys it when a book shatters my heart, stomps on it and then very slowly pieces it back together. So when I asked for recommendations in a group for books like that I was really looking forward to dive into the books people introduced me to. One of those books was this book and from the moment I read the blurb I was intrigued and wanted to learn more. So, when a prompt made me read a book that was recommended to me it was the perfect excuse to read this one.

This was not the heartbreaking and emotional read I had hoped it would be. The plot was heartbreaking and emotional, but the writing wasn't. In a way it felt like the writing kept me at a certain distance and prevented me from really feeling all the emotions our heroes and heroine were going through. And that's a pity. Because THAT was what I expected and really wanted. However, that doesn't mean the book wasn't worth it.

I absolutely loved the plot and I mostly loved the characters in this book and the way they were dealing with the circumstances. Although the depth of the emotions weren't there the author has clearly thrown them into a complicated and confronting situation and they are making the best of it. Maybe all the feelings are developing a little too quickly for my liking and yet I could understand why those feelings were triggered.

I also really loved the reveal at the very end of the book. I already had an inkling of what was about to happen but I was still kinda surprised when it did happen and it made me really curious to get the next book in the series and to figure out more. Especially because I think the stakes will only get higher in the future and I really can't wait to figure out the why and the how and the who. So I hope to get my hands on the next books soon so I can get some answers!

Part, a very small part of me wants to find out who set the hit.
I figured that shit out in the first 30% of the book when she pointed out their company was their biggest competition... Oops, spoiler alert.
Still, it wasn't rock science.

Hux, vyk, and blue are the ones.tempting me to attempt book two.

To ppl reading my review... If you like books where the author offers up WAY too many details, like the way water from a shower feels in the wrinkles of one's skin...not those literal words but you get the idea, then this series is for you!

Personally, there is only so many times I can read about how green trees are or how brushing one's teeth.feels odd or well, so on and so on.

Idk what to do............ Sigh

Widow by April Skye is book one in her Graves Crime Syndicate series. You better grab some tissues before you get started on this book! We first meet Allison and Devon. It starts with their struggles getting pregnant and finding out the fertility treatments worked. Allison is one tough, smart FMC who is dealt a hard hand and has to witness something completely awful. I'm looking forward to the next book! There is a small cliff hanger at the end of this. There are some trigger warnings. Sad, sad story - but oh so good. Can't wait to see how Allison finds her new self.

This was took me by surprise! The FMC is pretty great. From the beginning, she felt super relatable and I was loving her little quirks. Her name is Allison and her husband's name is Devon. They decide to go on a mini vacation a few towns over and while coming back from dinner one night, they walk into a mugging in progress. Devon, the good samaritan he is, attempts to stop it. No dark romance would be great without the tragedy, right? Well, it's not in short supply here.

I finally figured out this is actually an RH as well! Jackpot! And they are so freaking sweet. Of course, they all are very distinct and usually there is at least one I don't like but I like this whole group!

There isn't any spice in this book but it is part of a series (and ends on a cliffhanger) so I'm definitely looking forward to the next book!

5/5 - would definitely recommend. It's dark but not too rough with really sweet characters and the build up for what's to come has me hooked! Check triggers, there aren't many that I could point out but she does deal with fertility issues and all that entails.

Read at home

This is not a book you read in public or wear make up reading unless your prepared for people to see you full on ugly crying. It pulls you in and you feel the grief and heartache. Will definitely be reading the next book.

great start

This book very much delivers on the emotional promises it makes. There are some writing issues regarding past and present tense that get a little distracting, but story is a solid start and pulled on my heart strings and feel invested.

decent read

There were parts I enjoyed and some boring parts. My favorite parts were the real descriptions of grief and her forgetting names. The author drew out the grief and emphasized the love between Allison and Devon.

“The guys protected me, and I protected her.”

This fucking book!!! 🥺 It gives you ALL the feels!! Been sobbing, chuckling, frustrated, heartbroken… the list goes on. I devoured it!!

“he wanted to give me the world, and I just wanted to be someone worth giving it to.”

🤍 Devon - he deserves a shout out because he was a beautiful man with the worlds biggest heart. Instantly fell in love with him even knowing the outcome.. that’s why it hurt so much more… you almost hope they get killed off on the first page so you don’t get attached or find out just how amazing they are… I only wish he was in it longer but then we do have all the flashbacks 🥺😢 & there would’ve never been the story that is Widow without him…🤍

Allison & Devon are over the moon with the news of their pregnancy, it was a very long hard road to get there…They decide to take a trip away for the week…Until Devon tries to stop a mugging and gets shot. The guy he tried to save (Huxley) refuses to give up on Allison, along with his brothers David, Vyk & blue-eyes. There is SO much more to this story, the relationship between them all is everything. The way the author writes it is so clever because we all love Devon, but we also slowly fall in love with all the guys. It’s a very slow burn romance for obvious reasons! Literally just a sprinkling but you still get all the feels knowing how certain people feel…Seeing how the guys take care of Allison & bump is just everything. There is so much more I can’t wait to see and find out..

Their nicknames for each other are EVERYTHING!! I mean, they are kinda necessary considering Allison can’t remember anyone’s names 🤣🤣 i think my favourite is actually blue-eyes!! (Matt) but to be honest I’m falling for them all! As usual 😂 p.s Vyk is the best nickname 🤣

That ending is not ok… I will be just as devastated as Allison if I think what happens, happens 😩😩 don’t do it!! Don’t pierce my heart by ruining that character!! … I’m off to read the next book! 😅🙏🏼

Typically, I don't like mafia/crime books.
Sometimes an anti-hero is cool and all, but usually I just can't rally behind them. Hence my lack of interest in this genre.

All that said, I liked this book/series so far and I'm interested to see what's next.

I liked Allison. I was a little nervous going into this because the book starts w/ her losing her husband (that's not a spoiler - the book is literally titled "Widow"). She loved him and he was a good husband to her so I wasn't sure how I felt about her jumping into a new relationship so soon after losing what is seemingly her soul mate.

But I quickly realized that is not what was happening here and I was glad.
A lot of this book is them getting to know each other and finding friendship.
The guys are there for her after a devastating loss and romantic feelings are in the background but no one makes a move on that which I liked.
The development of their relationships was natural - it wasn't forced or faked.

Anyways there's a lot going on and I found myself thoroughly immersed in the story telling and before I knew it I had devoured not only this book, but also the next one in this series.

I can't wait for the other books to come out.

Intense and Emotionally Heavy

I'm on a bit of a streak this weekend with landing on fantastic reads by new authors (or new authors to me). Widow was my first time reading anything by April Skye and let me tell you, it was a surprise. An emotional and intense tear jerker of a surprise. The plot is complex and intense. The world building and character development is on point. Could use just a smidge more editing to clear up some typos, but nothing that consistently pulled me out of the story. I won't recap the synopsis, but I will say, this book fully captivated me and I was straight up crying through a few scenes. I'm going to have a headache tomorrow but it was totally worth it to feel something that deeply. A sign of some damn fine writing. Fantastic job Ms. Skye! I'll be eagerly awaiting book two.

Holy moly....

When I started this I guess I thought it was going to go one way and for the most part it did until the end. Wow! I was not expecting that! So we have nice guy Devon and fairly abrasive\ loner Allison. Married couple going through fertility treatments trying to have a baby. He's a workaholic trying to get tons of overtime for her and their baby, so at a point he decides to go on a little vacay at his bosses condo for a week. Then the unthinkable happens which sets everything else into motion. We get to meet lovable Huxley, the Viking Lachlan, rude Matt, and calculating david. All four men are there for her as she tail spins through her grief and finding her way while steadily growing larger with her unborn baby. There's still so much more to learn after that ending and I'm already making my theories! Great book , can't wait to see what's next.

Oh my f***!!!

Okay, I've read my fair share of crime syndicate books, mafia books, whatever you want to call it. This is my ABSOLUTE favorite by far!!

(SPOILERS)

April Skye has managed to capture the absolute devastation in loss that made my freshly-married self just cling to my husband and thank every single star in existence that he's alive and well. Allison's hurt and rage and numbness is just so raw and relatable that I felt myself grieving with her.

The writing is fantastic, sucked me right in and made me feel like a fly on the wall during the whole story. Perspective switches are often but flow naturally and easily. Character depth is phenomenal, and the potential to grow and change is there for almost every character introduced here to the point that I'm excited to see where it goes!

And the twist was honestly not what I was expecting. Looking back I can 100% see where it came from, but in the moment I was taken aback and felt the sheer bloodlust Allison displayed with that damn knife.

10/10, I can't WAIT to get started on Meadow, #2 of this series!!

DNF. I’m just not feeling it. I might be over the Reverse Harem trope? I just can’t connect with any of the relationships. I also don’t enjoy weirdly specific pet names or “brat” behavior. It just reads as awkward or inauthentic.

The heroine in this one switched back and forth from traumatized grieving widow to bratty roommate/love interest in a way that felt kinda bizarre to me? I just couldn’t get on board. Especially when she kept having dreams and flashbacks of her kind/loving husband.

FMC is a Grade A b!+€#

Okay the story/plot and men are sooooo good. I wanted to love or even just like this book but Allison is a grade a B and just annoying. The author tries to soften us to her by saying oh people don’t understand her humor, she didn’t grow up in a loving family, and I think hoping that the death of her husband will endear us to her. Spoiler alert they don’t. You mean this woman got someone as wonderful as Devon to put up with her and make her a housewife. Even one of the future harem makes a comment that ‘with her attitude he would have ran into a bullet too just to get away’. Like seriously she is a b!+€?*
Goes through their stuff without permission, makes rude nasty comments (they could have left her dead and she doesn’t show one ounce of appreciation), and of course is stupid enough to go back to her house and endanger herself and baby! But all the men still fall for her. Literally no. It all seems forced.

2.5 stars. The book is in serious need of an editor, and it was obvious as early as the second paragraph of chapter 1 when "enduring" was used in place of "endearing" for the first time (that particular mistake showed up twice more). The plot is pretty obvious, and I'm pretty sure I figured out (early in book 1) a reveal being saved for book 2. I may read book 2 but only because I'm weak for RH books that include pregnancy as part of the actual plot and not just the HEA. I just hope book 2 gets better editing than book 1 did.
