When you are married to a monster, there is nothing left in life but darkness. When you live in a nightmare, you would do anything to escape.
So that's what I do. I escape.
After fleeing from an abusive husband, taking a summer job as a housekeeper on a horse ranch in Northern Wyoming seems like the opportunity of a lifetime. Only my boss is a man with a past even darker than my own.
Elliot Cole is cold and distant, sexy and broody. He looks straight through me most days, and yet somehow I've never before felt more seen. But Elliot has secrets of his own - secrets he's desperate to keep buried.
Can two people who come from the darkness somehow find the light? Or will their future forever be overshadowed? Can they rewrite their pasts? Because the way I see it, you can never truly have what's in front of you, until you let go of what's behind you.
Almost Like You is a standalone, full length novel with no cliff hangers. It is N/A contemporary romance, with some dark themes, suitable for readers 18 years +.
Tessa is on the run from an abusive marriage and finds a 3 month job as a housekeeper at a horse ranch in Northern Wyoming belonging to the broody and grumpy Elliot Cole.
Elliot has reasons for his moody and reticent ways towards people and especially the beautiful Tessa. She takes it in her stride to not call him out on his moodiness and strange ways as she does not want any questions asked of her. It is best that their pasts remain buried!
After some time spent in close proximity going about their daily duties their walls and secrets are slowly broken down and shared. My heart ached for both of them reliving their pasts and the chemistry and attraction between them was slowly ignited. This slow burn tension between them was sexy and tense.
This book was very well written and the story flowed well. The characters were real and likeable, except for Tessa husband and his Driver!
I loved this second chance romance filled with new beginnings and an abundance of love
Absolutely fantastic, but I expected nothing less from the wonderful Karen Crompton!! She is an amazing author with so much talent and I’m so excited for everyone to read this beautiful book!!
Almost Like You is a contemporary romance with a sizzling slow burn that had me blushing!! It’s a grumpy/sunshine love story set on a ranch in Wyoming featuring a sexy cowboy with a tragic past and a brave and fierce heroine who’s on the run!!
Elliot Cole is most definitely a new book boyfriend, he’s a grumpy teddy bear with a heart of gold and is fiercely protective of the ones he loves, I loved his relationship with Benton as it allowed you to see a whole other side of him in the beginning of the book!! Elliot is anti social and a slight recluse with a very small, close knit group of friends!
Tessa is an inspiring character, she was dealt a crappy hand but she kept fighting and is a totally kickass heroine that I’m sure everyone will love!!
Tessa and Elliot are in a forced proximity when Tessa comes to work and live on his ranch and I loved the tension between them, both sexual and anger🤣. Their love was a slow burner but once they lit that match they heated the pages up and they were oh so hot!!
This book was beautifully written, so descriptive and Karen did a wonderful job at writing such a heartbreaking love story, I fell in love with all of the characters from the get go!!
I am voluntarily leaving this review. This was such a good book! Have your tissues ready because you will need them! Also, I would say there is a trigger warning for abuse. The characters were relatable, the supporting characters were perfect.
Tessa is on the run and finds herself hired for a three month job to be a housekeeper. She never thought she could have the feelings for another man again, until she meets a man who is as cold as ice and slowly starts the melt and reveal his true self. Elliot lived in a world of guilt and grief. He built a wall around his heart and was determined to never let it down again, until he meets a woman who had secrets he wanted know.
This is the first time I’ve read a book from this author, but it definitely will not be the last! I will definitely be checking out her other books!
Emotional, beautiful, and heart wrenching story about broken dreams and new beginnings. Let’s talk about setting! Omg Karen never fails to take me away with her writing. I felt sand under my feet, I felt warm weather, I felt the smell of horses and there was some point when I closed my eyes I could hear them too, softly breathing. I felt the pain, love, and friendship of each characters and at the end, I felt my heart grew just a bit bigger than it was before.🥰 This story shouldn’t be missed! I highly recommend to those readers who understand true value of intimacy and magic of love.
Broken knows broken when it sees it. Two people from different lives where their plans don't turn out to be exactly what life is for them. One on the run from an abusive husband another lost inside his mind with his own secrets. This book was so beautiful written. The slow burn of two people fighting their own thoughts and feelings feeling so lost to thir overturned lives. I love the strength these characters build within themselves as they find their way through the fog.
Elliott owns a horse ranch and throughout the busiest season, he hires a housekeeper - in comes Tessa! Tessa may originally seem to be just a nice hardworking girl who's passing through, but damn I want to take her and hideaway because she has had it bad! She's on the run from her abusive husband - that girl has suffered and so-called men like that, don't deserve life. End off.
Anyway, a grumpy, rude ranch owner - who has also had heartache - and the cute but old-before-her-time housekeeper with a heart come together and get absolutely terrified because they can feel something between them. This is their story of overcoming heartache, taking a chance and second-chance love - I loved it!
There is definite chemistry between them, there good people and you just want them to be happy!
*I voluntarily received an arc and this is my honest review. 4.5 stars
This is Karen’s best book yet, she is a true story teller and draws you in from the first page. Like the Winter before it’s a story you can’t put down and are left wanting more of the protagonist’s life and story. Tessa and Elliot are two broken souls who heal each. The book intertwines their past stories that lead them to each other, exploring themes of sexual coercion and control, love, loss and grief. I loved this book and couldn’t put it down, it’s romance, crime and thriller. Think Cape Fear. It explores more mature themes then Karen’s previous books and I think is a reflection of her maturity as an author.
This book was a lot tamer than I’m used to, which is a nice palate cleanser occasionally, but I wasn’t expecting it to be so slow burning. I wasn’t completely crazy about this book until the last 25%, and then I was all in, and hated that it ended. I feel like the story had too much “filler” and not enough action. I loved the premise of this story: abused FMC escapes to Wyoming to work as a housekeeper for a grumpy stable owner. We learn about his haunted past and they build a bond. If there had been more action (not even counting the 🌶), I’d have liked this a lot more. There was just too much extra stuff that didn’t really pertain to the story itself. The only other qualm I had with this book is that the writer is clearly not from the US. This isn’t a problem, but this book is set in the US, and my inner monologue could tell. I kept switching from an American accent to an English accent. It took me out of the story quite often. It probably won’t bother most people or affect their experience with the book, but it bothered me, so I want to make sure people are aware of it.
Almost Like You is the beautifully-written story of a woman, Tessa, running away from a toxic life with an abusive husband and finding a summer job on a ranch in Wyoming. There, she encounters the broody owner, Elliot, who is suffering from past tragedy of his own.
Over time, secrets of their pasts come to light as they experience feelings neither expected. Not only did I love the seamless flow of the storyline (no dragging parts), just when I thought I knew what would happen next, there’d be a slight twist I didn’t fully expect. I LOVED the two MCs and all of the feels between them!
This book is an amazing 5-star read! I loved the grumpy/sunshine, close proximity, second chance romance storyline and found myself rooting for both main characters the whole way through. I couldn’t put this book down and read nearly the whole thing in one sitting. This is yet another fantastic book by Karen Crompton!

Almost Like You is a cowboy sunshine and grumpy contemporary romance with forced proximity and a lot of sexual tension.
Elliot is the owner of a horse ranch in which he trains horses for their owners. During the busiest season, he hires Tessa to help keep the house tidy and to prepare his meals for him due to his chaotic schedule.
Both Tessa and Elliot have tortured pasts and have battled through equally tough experiences that nobody should ever have to endure. It's because of these tortured pasts that make the sexual tension so strong and their story so beautiful.
This is my first book by this author and I will certainly be reading the rest of her work at some point in the near future. This book is written incredibly well and the characters are now some of my favourites.
What a truly beautiful second chance at love story this was. An emotional rollercoaster of such heartache and pain that it kept me glued to the pages with tears streaming down my face and crying into my pillow hoping that Tessa and Elliot get the happiness they both deserve.
Tessa is a survivor of such horrible domestic abuse. She does the impossible and escapes. Which brings her straight to Elliot’s doorstep. Little does Elliot know that Tessa is going to turn his world upside down and help a broken man learn to love again.
I loved the connection between Tessa and Elliot and the intensity of their back and forth banter. You just knew these two would be something special if they would both just let their guards down.
This story was phenomenal and really well written. It was filled to the brim with emotional turmoil, drama, pain, anger, suspense and undeniable chemistry and passion. I loved every second of this story and I can’t wait to read more by this amazing author.
Tessa lives in darkness, married to an abusive monster, and the only thing on her mind is escape. Eventually Tessa does manage to escape and takes a job as a housekeeper on a horse ranch. Elliot is Tessa’s new boss, and he is cold, broody, and a sexy alpha, with a lot of secrets of his own. This is a well written story which is an emotional roller coaster, with secrets, tension, intrigue, challenges, and love, which leads to an entertaining and compelling page turner. I look forward to reading more from this talented author whose work I highly recommend. Be aware there may be triggers for some readers due to the sensitive content!! I received a free copy of this book via The Next Step PR and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Omg this is a book not to be missed. So much drama and emotion and a storyline that will have you crying at times and so angry at other times but you won't be able to stop reading. Two broken people in Tessa and Elliot but could they get their HEA. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book received from The Next Step PR.
This book was so good! Hits all the feelings just right! The story line was excellent and the characters are so well written, even Christopher (yuck!) I would have liked a little more between Tessa and Christopher in their final scene, but it still ends as it should.
I’ve never read anything by this author before. I was instantly hooked from the beginning. Chapter 2 was a rough one to read. Please if you’re a person who can’t read anything involving DV then skip this one. It was hard for me to read and made me sick to my stomach. We get multiple POVs in this book and one that I wasn’t expecting. Elliot is so grumpy and I absolutely loved that about him. Throughout most of the book we know about Tessa’s past but we are learning along the way about Elliot’s past. The amount of pain my heart felt for these two characters is indescribable. The way you literally could feel the connection they have and how they fight it because of their past 😭 my heart was so heavy. The pacing of this book was perfect, the character development was fantastic and the storyline was heartbreaking but perfectly written. The last 15% of the book had me on the edge of my seat. I’m pretty sure I wasn’t breathing and my heart was beating loudly in my ears. The moment I finished this book I felt like I had a hangover, in the best way possible. READ THIS BOOK! Oh and FUCK Christopher. That is all ✌️
very cute very beautiful i am completely in love with grumpy/sunshine where he is always grumpy but little by little he does little things to make her happy. I think it was one of the worst books I've read in terms of heroin traumas, everything her abuser ex did to her was so horrible the worst thing I've ever read, I don't have a trigger for anything I say it was very bad because what he made her pass I'm amazed she didn't kill herself but kept living.
it reminded me a lot of jakemeridith from rs gray (not that that's a bad thing)
Almost Like You is such an emotional story that I felt like I was holding my breath from start to finish. It is intense, poignant and at times heart wrenching. Two broken souls that are drawn to each other, one drowning in the darkness and the other trying to find the light. Elliott and Tessa will hold your heart in the palm of their hands as they take you on this passionate and powerful journey of healing and love. The storyline will have you riding a wave of emotions that will lead to tears, heartbreak, smiles and finally joy. The devastation these two had suffered at times nearly broke me but I was so drawn to both the characters and the storyline that I was unable to put it down. The connection, passion and chemistry between these two was moving and affecting. An absolute brilliant story that stole my breath and left my heart full.
This is the first book that I’ve read by this author. She kept me intrigued and turning the pages so fast to uncover the dark pasts from these two. Such a good read.
Tessa is on the run after leaving her abusive husband. She ends up in Northern Wyoming at a horse ranch as a housekeeper for 3 months. She has a dark past that she tries to keep hidden.
Elliot has an even darker past. Though Tessa doesn’t call him out in his snarky, grumpy and moodiness. She senses something herself. Can they keep their pasts hidden or will they resurface?
This is an amazing book. I love how these two both slowly open up to each other. Such a slow burn in this second chance romance. Full of tension, secrets, chemistry, darkness and a love to brighten both of their futures. Can’t wait to read more from Crompton.
I received this arc and am voluntarily leaving my honest opinion.
3.4 I didn’t know this story was going to be as dark as it was, and I think that’s why it’s not ranked higher. It wasn’t that dark in reality, but small town romances and horrific trama do not mix as well for me. Spousal abuse isn’t something I like to read about, and that was hard for me to get through. I loved the emotions and the conflicts that Elliot was going through as he processed how he truly felt about his new reality. My heart was breaking for Tessa throughout most of this book, but there is one scene in particular that my heart shattered at towards the very end, and honestly I was so amazed and in such shock and anticipation to see how Crompton was going to play it off.
This book was not a bad read, super quick and easy to get through, and I will definitely be reading more from this author!
I really wanted to rate this book a four star, but there were a couple scenes that really just bothered me. One being the way he would joke around with his wife. I get that he’s joking, but it still rubbed me the wrong way. Now don’t get me wrong I think that him and Tessa are perfect for each other, and I love that they ended up together. I feel that the whole scene in his room REALLY rubbed me the wrong way… I don’t know it just felt so wrong, and was immediately forgotten. Also I know why Seth did it, but still you would think he would be just a tiny bit upset. Also it felt like the whole scene of the car at the end was wrapped up in 5 pages, like it happened so fast and I felt that I was just rushed.
Besides all of this I honestly did like the book, and I save a lot of super cute quotes!!
First time reading this author's work. Amazing and emotional read. I throughly enjoyed this book!
Tessa is no stranger to pain, what she thought ws the perfect marriage to a handsone man turned out to be heartache and pain. Shes endured so much at the hands of her abusive husband Christopher. She finds friendship and comfort in her horse and the stables oldest worker Jonah. Tessa comes up with a plan that will change her life forever...
Elliot is a widower at a very early age.. he goes through his days sullen and missing his wife dearly. He decides to hire a temporary housekeeper, this decision will forever change his life..
A very emotional read. Two broken people letting their guard down after being in pain and learning to love again. I really enjoyed this magical book!
3.5 stars Started really well but became too maudlin and overwrought. I enjoyed Elliott's character the most and was charmed as he let down his walls and let Tessa in.
However, spice scenes weren't written very descriptively or well. There is also a scene with the hero in his bedroom that was just plain strange, and I suspect thrown in there to force a third-act conflict which didn't need to happen. Last, the author introduces a side plot around horse thieves then never resolves it, which is strange.
All in, though, the author is a good writer and can definitely write emotion, trauma, and longing. Lots of potential, and I will definitely keep reading her work.
This book came across as something I might like on my kindle. I decided to take a chance and an author I had never read and have to say I am glad I did. Karen Crompton brought readers a story of awakening. Of moving forward and of second chances at love.
Elliot is a grumpy cowboy while Tessa was the light he needed. Both are deserving of a new chance at love although for different reasons. Learning their stories will hurt your heart, but their time together definitely heals it.
I recommend readers take a chance on this one- it’s worth it!
This was such a lovely story. It's got a lot of sadness and trauma with both Elliot and Tessa having a world of pain in their pasts. But their journey is lovely. I would have loved a bit more 'after the action' stuff (I feel like stuff with Seth was brushed over and he and Jenna would have been feeling so awful!) But it's got a lovely (although cheesy) HEA which I always enjoy!
Tbh the best bits were the sexual tension in the build up to them getting together. The anticipation was beautifully done!
I really wanted to love the book because it had everything i enjoy : small town, horses, cowboys, but unfortunately i did not. I feel like some parts went too fast. It was like Tessa had just arrived and Elliott and her already had feelings for each other when they hadn’t even properly interacted together. I dont understand why there was the horse thieves plot… it didnt bring anything and we didn’t even get an ending for that. However, i really enjoyed seeing the different point of views specially the bad guy’s. It was interesting to see how he is mind worked.
In today's digital age there are many new and awesome authors making names for themselves. Yet every now and again there is one that stands out from the crowd. Crompton is that one! This story has everything. Realism in spades, well developed characters, a touch of spice, a lot of suspense, and a plot that doesn't sit still for anyone. And the best part of it all is that it was written by an author that I would classify a true wordsmith in the highest sense. Kudos to Crompton for delivering this most entertaining read!
