The Cotton Candy Massacre #1

The Cotton Candy Massacre

Rate this book
The book you are about to read is an account of the tragedy that occurred at the reopening of Bonkin's Bonanza one day in the summer of 1989.

Some came looking for fun, like Candy Barton and her best friend, Leigh. Others, like Rocky Rhodes and Sully Sullivan, came looking for a second chance. Instead, they would find a twisted, funfetti nightmare.

For many of the thrill-seekers and families visiting Bonkin's Bonanza, that day would be their last. And the events that unfolded would go on to become infamously known as The Cotton Candy Massacre.

I reread this book in preparation to read book two. Still loving the book.
----
I started to read the book earlier this year but at the time it was to ridiculous for me to get into the story. But this time around I loved it. It was Creepy, dark and gory but had an feel of a very bizarre ridiculousness I can't really explain. But it was very entertaining once I got into it. But definitely weird and disgusting at times.

"Little b---- bit me! That ain't hyperglycemia. The f--- is she on!?"

"He notices streaks of pink in the cream, and more of the white fluffiness turns red as the pie slides down the man's face."

Ok!! I was prepared for maniacal clowns, but I wasn't prepared for such an intricate origin story. And the care Robertson puts into detailing the desires, strengths, fears, and weaknesses of each of the main teenage characters is brilliant--because not only is this a fun read, it is one that I assure you WILL pull at your heartstrings. Along with the goofy shenanigans you get murder and mayhem.

For a very brief rundown, I'll say it is about Bonko's Bonanza re-opening after a decade of being shut down--with one of the main attractions being the machine that was used to murder Bonko himself!! That's all I'll say...it's really best you go in blind!

So obviously, you need to read this, but be forewarned that no character is safe. No death scene is weakly plotted.

The Greatest Showman… from Hell… with clowns! (Ain’t that the toot… tootin’ truth, ay yup!) - Cotton Candy Massacre, now on VHS and Beta Max!

I was honoured to be asked to become part of the clown posse that had the opportunity to read an ARC of this colourful cotton candy filled bloodfest.

In typical Robertson style readers are drawn into an eighties slasherparty in a carnival setting. But this story goes beyond a normal slasher. No Jason Voorhees or Freddie Krueger but a genuine group of killer clowns.

I don’t want to spoil too much of the story or content so I won’t indulge in the details but just let me tell you, this here bloodfest is a party for all lovers of sadistic killings and of those who love blood dripping from the pages! And then there’s another thing I truly loved: the humour! Christopher knows how to entertain his readers. And his humour balances the bloody bits of his stories perfectly!

So grab yourself a copy (it’s available from July 1st 2022) on Amazon! Just don’t indulge your sweet tooth and stay away from any cotton candy you may find lying around… no maat how delicious it may look.

Was this book a literary masterpiece? Absolutely the fuck not. But it sure as hell was a whole load of fun!

This book almost landed on the DNF pile in the first 10%. I was just not vibing with the writing style, the way it was told as if you're watching a movie simply didn't do it for me. But when the first bit of gore hit, it definitely caught my interest and made me curious. If that bit of gore had not been there at that exact moment, I would definitely have DNF'ed this book.

That being said, the way the gore was described was right up my alley! Sure, the movie-like writing style was a bit of a challenge to get through, but once I got used to it I enjoyed the book a lot! As you read the story, it seems like the writer gets more and more confident in their writing. It's an interesting development, to say the least.

Some characters were pretty well developed, while others lacked personality. Even some of what I viewed as the main cast didn't feel as well developed as they should. I totally understand there being plenty of characters that are purely there to be killed off, especially in a splatterpunk book. But the characters that last until the last 25% of your book should have a bit more spice to them.

Have I already said that I utterly loved the gore in this book? Yes? Well, let me just say it again: I freaking loved the gore! There are some pretty creative kills in here, some even made me cringe and the book had me feel uncomfortable at more than one occasion. And that's what horror is supposed to do if you ask me: Make you feel uncomfortable.

In the end, The Cotton Candy Massacre was an entertaining splatterpunk book and I enjoyed myself.

(SPOILER: There is one kill that will haunt me in my sleep and will live rent free in my head. It wasn't even a very bloody kill, but I simply bawled my eyes out of my head, it was so sad! I am talking about the Ferris Wheel Kill of the Family. My poor heart was smashed into smithereens!)

It’s a shame what happened in 1989 when those goofballs tried to reopen Bonko’s. A tragic, no good, smells like rotten hot dogs shame. Christopher Robertson details what went down so well here you’d think he’d made it up! Bad TCM jokes aside, Christopher has crafted a special book here. Everything I loved in Virgin Night and My Zombie Sweetheart is dialed up to seven hundred and let loose. Christopher Robertson’s books remind me of Adam Green movies. They’re always outrageous, ooey gooey, fun, and most importantly overflowing with love for the craft and genre. Every line reads like an author who truly wants to create something special. The book reads like the work of a mad scientist who wants nothing more than to show the world why he loves B-movie horror. Much like Adam Green, Christopher Robertson can have you cringing in pain, laughing about the over abundance, and then feeling an emotional overhaul. Christopher Robertson rulzzz and I hope he writes as many books as someone who’s written a lot of books… only they aren’t about boring submarines… although… yeah… I totally want a submarine book. K thx.

3.5 star // very creative gore and lots of fun action but the middle section was really the only spot where this excelled for me. During the first few chapters I considered dnfing because I just wasnt caring about the characters, but once they got to the carnival the action ramped up and it was super fun. But by page 250-300 I was over gore, gore, and more gore and ready for the story to be wrapped up, yet still had another 100 pages to go. This just isn't the type of story I needed 400 pages of. As a novella it would have been a 5 star. It was fun, fast paced, and creative. But for longer books I need characters that I find interesting and am rooting for to keep me intrigued in whats happening and I just didn't get that from this.

Clowns, chaos and gore? What did you expect with a title entitled 'The Cotton Candy Massacre'? This story was anything but sweet as its title loosely suggests. I was drawn to it from the grisly beginning to the climactic ending. This is my first book by Robertson I have read, and the first thing that caught my attention was his writing style. It's unique and worked well for this story's multiple perspectives and storylines. Some people may not like this style or think it can't be executed properly, but Robertson doesn't disappoint at all. There were so many characters I loved, some I despised with my whole being and some that were...just there. Leigh had to be my favorite; makes me wish I was like her in many ways; however, the main character we're to aim our focus on is Candy Barton. She was a decent character, but there were times I couldn't "connect" with her and while her reactions to what was going on around her were realistic, there were a couple times she threw me with the way she responded after something horrific. Another surprising favorite for me was Sully. Her story is so tragic and it was nice to see her get some "justice" out of it. Bonko was definitely NOT a favorite at all and I was glad to see his...demise. 'The Cotton Candy Massacre' was fast paced with an compelling plot, violent scenes of gore that were played off to be amusing and extremely colorful. Three words I can use to sum up this tale: comedic, brutal and thrilling!!

I don’t think I’ve been this immersed in the world of a book for a very long time. i felt like I could hear the mechanical whirring of fairground rides and smell the candy apples and popcorn… and the blood and torn up insides, that too.

cotton candy massacre has everything—horror, gore, witty humour, a fun cast of characters, 80s references that sometimes went over my head, and of course clowns of all shapes, sizes, and peculiarities. there was even a little bit of a love story that warmed even my cold unromantic heart.

highly, HIGHLY recommend, and i will be checking out other works from this author immediately.

I’ll start off by saying that when I first heard about The Cotton Candy Massacre I was intrigued by the title alone. Following on from his previous teen slasher novel Virgin Night, I was excited to dive into another Christopher Robertson book. And, oh boy, this dark night in Bonkin’s Bonanza did not disappoint at all.

Like Virgin Night, I didn’t just read a horror novel, I experienced an 80s slasher movie. One I imagine would have stuck out on the shelves of my local VHS store back in the day. I can picture it now: vivid cover art, a cast too old to play their parts and it would be infamous for being labelled a video nasty. Because to be frank, this story is gruesome and twisted just like Buster B. Bonkin himself.
And I mean that in the best possible way.

As a die-hard fanatic of slasher cinema, it was easy for me to spot the influences that the golden era of the slasher had on The Cotton Candy Massacre—as well as some genre masters. There’s a bit of Hooper, a bit of Zombie—a lot of clowns—but most importantly this is a Robertson story through and through. His cinematic style of writing once again brings out the development of this intriguing setting and fleshes out the characters. I had a particular fondness for Candy and Rocky whose relationship could have been the basis for an almighty 80s power ballad. They are young love at its most dramatic amongst the chaos at Bonkin’s.

The Cotton Candy Massacre is the 80s slasher movie that I craved to see, yet it was never made. Robertson gets the subgenre and knows how to put his own spin on it, and he does it with razor sharp precision. There’s no clowning around in that respect.

"I fuckin' hate clowns." 🤡🔪🤡🔪🤡

80's slasher party in a damn carnival full of killer psycho clowns.
This whole nightmare started with Bonko 🤡 years ago, and no matter the depraved cruelty perpetrated by the cursed clowns on this day, all of them, the Children of the Candy 🍭🍫🍬, are victims of this man. This creature clinging to a twisted mockery of life, held together by spilled blood and evil machinery, corrupting this place and all
those he touches.

Campy..brutal...bonkers ..batshit crazy 🤡🔪🍭

3.8 Stars bumped up to 4!

I heard a lot of good things about this one, so I was excited to check this out! Honestly the 1st 100 pages severely dragged, where it was discouraging to push onward.
But I will say, once things started picking up- things got pretty off the walls quickly! From that point it was a quick read, & was very entertaining!
As being a huge fan of Killer Klowns from Outerspace, this was a satisfying Splatterpunk read!

Holy shit. to be continued...

The one-man-show behind the universe that is TerrorScope has done it again. But we shouldn't be surprised. Robertson's fast-paced writing, paired with splatterfest delight, drags you kicking and screaming into his cinematic marvel. The Cotton Candy Massacre follows a couple of recently uncoupled teens and their siblings as they embark on an ill-fated trip to the reopened Bonkin's Bonanza. In this carnival extravaganza we find all the usuals - spinning rides, fast rides, haunted rides, shoot em up games, candy apples, hot dogs, cannibalistic clowns. Wait…

Introduced with an utterly fantastic foreword by Damien Casey, you'd be f-f-f-foolish not to pick up a copy of Robertson's latest writing endeavour.

Holy freaking gobs of cotton candy. Someone told me I would need brain bleach after reading this and now that I’ve finished it I can wholeheartedly agree with that statement.

This book had a killer cotton candy machine and Killer Freaking clowns! They couldn’t just be normal killer clowns either as if that’s not bad enough, OH NO PEOPLE!!!! They had to be killer clowns who killed in the most grotesque gruesome ways. Carnival killer clowns I swear on all that I have I will never step foot in another carnival as long as live, your not catching me off guard when it comes to killer clowns.

I wanted to love this one so bad, but I just did not like the writing and pacing.
The overall idea is super unique and cool, a really interesting take on an overdone slasher plot.
However, I need my slashers to be fast paced and short. This one was too long and dragged in too many places.
There were some good gory moments, but I was hoping for a bit more.
The character Candy was written as if she was a child and I hated reading her described so childlike. It felt weird and made her extremely irritating.

I was lucky enough to be given an ARC of this wild tale in exchange for a review. So, if you want to read that review then…roll up, roll up!

For the second time this summer, I’m off to the circus and am trusting my life in the hands of another highly talented UK indie author. And, just as my trip to Montague’s with Jamie Stewart was a white-knuckle thrill fest, so is the Cotton Candy Massacre. This story is carnage, absolutely sheer brilliant carnage.

If you’ve never read Christopher Robertson’s stuff before, then make sure you’re sitting down. He writes books that think they’re movies. And not just any old movies - 80s video nasties drenched in gore and adrenaline. The pages zip by as the action thunders through and the bodies pile up. It’s a unique style that serves this particular sugar rush brilliantly.

The premise of Cotton Candy Massacre is not for the faint-hearted; we start off with the brutal revenge murder of a nasty clown - oh yeah, this book has a lot of clowns - then fast forward a few years to the revival of said clown and possession of unknowing folk through the form of tainted cotton candy. Pretty soon, the gates slam shut and those who aren’t dead wish they were, trapped in a place full of fried meat, calliope music, and evil flipping clowns.

This book is exhausting and chaotic as a very chaotic thing. But it’s also assured, confident, well-crafted, scary, gore-splattered, funny and deeply entertaining. If you’re looking for a sugar rush of blood, guts and terrifying clowns, this is the one for you. And if you don’t like the clowns, too bad…they’re already hunting you down.

I mean... what do I say, HOW DO I RATE THIS!? I absolutely loved it, I fucking hated it... I mean how!? Haha I'm not a fan of slashers in any way but this book was written so absolutely beautifully and so uniquely that you can't help but love it. But also in the wise words of Walker, I fucking hate clowns. So this book was a great mix of terrifying with some comic relief when needed while also still keeping you on the edge of your seat and guessing.

4.5 stars rounded down to 4!

I absolutely love horror set at an amusement park and Christopher Robertson took it to the next level with The Cotton Candy Massacre. It took a bit at first for me to get into with the YA-feel POVs, but once the story really took off it TOOK OFF. The gore in this was perfectly written and disturbingly descriptive, I could almost picture myself right there at Bonkin’s Bananza with them.

There were so many elements of this that i really loved: a gory history of the amusement park, constantly switching POVs, a sapphic love story undertone, and not to mention the murderous cotton candy possessed clowns🤡

If you enjoyed Cirque Beserk by Jessica Guess or Hide by Kiersten White, definitely pick up this bloody fun slasher!

Step right up, folks! Don't be shy! This is the carnival you’ve been waiting for! prepare to feast your eyes on the delightfully grotesque wonders that Bonko’s carnival has to offer! We’ve got blood, guts and cotton candy galore! Hurry, hurry, hurry & join in on the fun!

This book was such a BLAST! I loved the characters, I loved the rich carnival atmosphere and especially all the CLOWNS! But what was cool about the clowns is that they were all different. From different makeup designs and styles to extremely imaginative and creative death scenes. Clowns can get away with using just about any prop to create a good bloody moment! My favorite was one that involved pie-throwing and another with a balloon. But there’s also way more to the story than just an all out massacre, the main characters were people I grew to care about. There’s strong friendships, betrayals and heartbreak with lots of dark humor and plenty of attitude. I love when there’s a good balance of an over the top plot with a great cast of characters that don’t feel like cardboard cut-outs. I will admit I may have teared up a bit on the end there haha

Also, the novel is written like it’s horror movie with flashbacks, split-screen moments and cutting off to another scene. It really felt like watching a movie! And the best part- there’s a Spotify playlist that goes with the book! I loved playing the songs when the scenes would turn up in the novel! It enhanced the whole reading experience for me.

I recommend you pick this up if clowns and amusement parks are your thing. This has a whole Killer Klowns From Outer Space vibe but uniquely its own! Grab your popcorn, throw some glitter and sit back and enjoy the pure carnage! Just beware the cotton candy….
