I like my life the way it is. Calm, quiet and very private. I may be a brash New Yorker, but I keep a tight circle, and I prefer it that way.
Enter Colt Chastain, rising NBA star and magnetic single dad. He’s set his sights on me and he's determined to change my mind. No way that’s going to happen. Nope. Never. Did I mention he’s tenacious? And hot? Very, very hot.
I told him he’s the absolute last man I would ever be with. So, why does he think getting me into bed is a slam dunk?
I tried to resist. I really did. My efforts didn’t work, and now I’ve found myself falling head over heels for him. Did I say quiet and private? I’ll even accept the crazy public lifestyle.
Now, I can't picture my life without him and his adorable five-year-old son.
Colt
I live my life in the spotlight. Millions of fans, social media and press follow me everywhere. That’s not my preference. That comes with the job.
On the inside, I'm a regular southern gentleman who can't fight my attraction to the tempting New Yorker who's caught my eye.
Victoria Taylor is everything I ever wanted. She’s beautiful, sexy, confident and not afraid to put me in my place. She says she doesn’t want me, but her eyes tell a different story. I'll stop at nothing to prove to her that we're really not that different after all.
A Boston native, wife, mother, and wine enthusiast. If she’s not writing, thinking about writing, you will find Evelyn with a book in her hands. While a new publisher, she’s been writing for years, and she will continue to write for many years to come. Evelyn is obsessed with assertive and confident men who will stop at nothing to get their woman. Her stories are filled with love, passion and humor. She currently lives in Washington, DC with her husband and two daughters.
I can not say I enjoy Takeoff. It is OK. The story is there. What ruined this book for me is Vickie. She is OTT drama queen. Poor Colt. I feel sorry for him.
I know Miss Sola is trying to blend OTT drama queen acts so the plot and the tone of the story can be more dramatic. Somehow, I feel the execution is off.
What a brat The story of Vickie and Colton, a teacher and a basketball player seemed interesting on paper. Vickie had all these rules for “hooking up” given that she doesn’t want a relationship. Interestingly enough Colt ticks all her not to boxes. Somehow he wears her down and they embark on a relationship until Colt has an accident on the court and things start to unravel. Unfortunately I just couldn’t stand Vickie, making it hard to go through the story. She was unnecessarily rude and judgmental when they first met and had a very unpleasant demeanor throughout the book. I understand her abandonment issues, however after 20 years one would have hoped she seeked help. She basically had a fit and was far too stubborn and little empathetic. I actually felt like deep down she didn’t respect Colt job as she saw it as a stupid game. I understand that he pushed her away but let’s be real, it was only 2-3 weeks and he had a real traumatic experience. She never acknowledged that. She was all about self. I would have had more respect for her had she gone to Alabama and given him a piece of her mind. Colt wasn’t perfect of course with his bull in a china shop attitude at times (screaming about a pregnancy really?) but on the whole was a much better character. Evan was sweet. The rest of the cast was enabling Vickie’s bad attitude too much for my liking.

Vickie has no interest in dating, she is so over men. When she does date, she has rules that she sticks to - no single dads, no athletes and no celebrities. She prefers the private, fly under the radar life. She is also fiercely independent, she pays her own way and any guy who tries to tell her what she should do can take a hike. Right now though she is happy being single.
‘I'm not the type of girl who swoons. I'm not the type of girl who falls hard for a man. I'm not the girl who believes in happily ever after.’
‘I'm the pragmatic girl. The one who keeps men at a distance. The one who sets the terms in the relationships. I'm the one who walks away, but when I do, I don't leave collateral damage.’
Colt is a NBA star and single dad to his gorgeous son Evan. While a lot of his team mates enjoy all the female attention that comes with their fame, he prefers to be more discreet about it. He definitely indulged when he was younger but now that he is raising his son alone, being with him is his priority when he is not away playing.
Vickie encounters Cole at a bar one night. She is in the VIP section with her sister when she is introduced to Cole. Colt is used to girls falling at his feet, he is gorgeous and if that wasn’t enough, there is his southern charm - most girls find it irresistible. Vickie is not most girls though. No matter what he says or does, she slams the door on him. Instead of walking away he sees it as a challenge he needs to overcome.
Colt is completely intrigued by Vickie’s continuous rejection of him and most guys would simply give up. Colt sees that slightest flicker of interest behind her resolve and it’s enough for him to patiently persist. He manages to worm his way into her life and becomes good friends with her extended family. His gorgeous son Evan loves having all these new people in his life and he soon has a special bond with Vickie.
Eventually, she can’t resist this southern boy anymore and she lets him in. She does warn him up front though, he only has one chance with her and if he messes it up there is no going back for them. When Vickie opens herself up she is all in. She is there for him and Evan in every way. They settle into a comfortable routine that Colt has never experienced before and he can’t see a future without his Queen Vee being by his side.
‘The love you have for a child can do wondrous things, but it can't fill the deep void of emptiness inside. The kind that can only be fulfilled by another adult human being. The kind that you can hold and kiss, and make love to on a night like tonight. The kind who would wait up for you to get home and jump in your arms when you walk through the door. The kind who will celebrate your wins and mourn your losses along with you.’
However, things begin to spin out of control for Colt. It's unchartered waters for him, he struggles with what is happening and instead of letting Vickie be there for him he does the one thing he promised he would never do. Vickie has abandonment issues that she has carried with her since she was young and she promised herself that she would never let anyone make her feel less than what she deserves. It’s self preservation to protect her heart.
‘People come into your life, and they walk out of it. And it hurts the most when it's the people you love. The ones you least expect to leave.’
Colt has really dug himself into a huge hole. He has broken his promise to Vickie, upset his son and her entire family. If he ever wants to have that future he dreamed of with his Queen Vee he has some serious groveling to do!
It took me a while to get into this story, it’s quite long but once I was in it, I was committed. I loved all the interactions with Evan and how careful Colt was with introducing someone new into his life. Vickie was a tough nut to crack but once Colt got through her walls she became a completely different person. It was just a defense mechanism to protect herself. Overall I really enjoyed this.
If you haven't read the books in this series—y'all have been missing out on getting to know The Taylor-Bradford Clan.
Before I get down to it. STOP! What a minute—have you read the first book that started this journey? If yes, please continue to proceed with reading this review. If not, what are YOU waiting for download 'Takeover' now?! Read it. Then—of course, proceed with this review.
Now, this is Victoria’s Story. Her twin is Alan and Tara from 'Takeover' is her sister. Vickie is a teacher by day and she meets Colt while partying with Tara and Ethan. He's more than intrigued by meeting a woman who doesn't know who he is or what he does for a living, or care.
He finds out, Vickie doesn’t do daddies of any kind—men with children as opposed to Sugar daddies, nor celebrities. When she meets Colt, she is determined to stay away, but like most Alpha males, he only hears the word mine and he’s determined to have her.
Victoria Taylor tries hard to ignore Colt Chastain and his cute kid Evan, who is best friends with Vinnie, who’s father is Ethan, the Alpha male that was able to help Tara reassess her vision of who and what she wanted long term. Please read ‘Takeover’ first, my personal favorite. Don't read (just a little) too much into that statement because 'Takedown' (Book 2) and 'Takeoff' (Book 3) are also five-star reads.
Colt eventually convinces Vickie to turn their non-relationship into a relationship, slowly but surely. When Colt's future hangs in the balance, feeling broken and afraid, he pushes her away instead of sharing his insecurities. When all efforts to be there seems to be in vain, she's had enough of his arms length behavior. Colt eventually comes to his senses, but he did the one thing that was a deal-breaker. Broken trust equals broken hearts. She’s done but Colt’s just getting started. Getting her back won’t be easy (she's no pushover) but nothing truly worth having, is ever easy. Colt knows he’ll have to make the play of a lifetime, because spending, and living his life without her was never an option in the first place.
Her- hey so here are my boundaries and I'd really like you to respect them Him- nah I'm not gonna do that, and also I just saved you from SA so you kinda have to forgive me lol
I’ve been holding off on reading this author for a while, mainly because I do some of the blurbs didn’t appeal to me, or I should say make me want to read it.
I decided on this one because I wanted to read about another sport other than hockey. I found myself sucked in definitely by page 66.
I love the chase and the persistence that Colt had when pursuing this relationship with Victoria.
Another thing I loved was the child comes first mindset that Victoria had. The steam was great, and this has made me want to read the other two books in the series about the other siblings.
There is a third act break up, but I did feel that that break up was warranted for what was going on in their life at that point in time.
This book has been on my TBR for a really long time. I kept putting off reading it for a couple of reasons. One I was worried it wasn’t gonna be as good as I thought/was hoping it would be.
I was worried it would be too much race issues/less romance.
It’s a longer book and those always take me forever to scratch off my TBR.
But I absolutely loved it! Yes it’s a slow burn. But in the best and most realistic way. There were times in the first 50% where Vickie was stressing me out as I felt a lot of her actions were hypocritical and she had complete double standards. But the more you learn about her the more it all makes sense.
I have to say I loved Colt!! Even the situation that led to the 3rd act breakup wasn’t as bad as many other books are. I also got tears in my eyes with the flashback conversation they had with Evan at the end!!
This book was better than I expected, a fun good read and I loved the way Colt feels about Vickie 😍😍😍❤️❤️❤️❤️
There were some parts of this book that I liked, but I really hated Vickie and she ruined the book for me.
Colt was fine for most of the book, but I really didn’t like Vickie. She was so hostile towards Colt that it ruined their relationship for me. It felt like even when they were in a relationship and they were spending time together, Vickie didn’t want anything to do with Colt. Also, she accuses Colt of being high handed and she keeps making all these assumptions about him when she hasn’t even tried to get to know him. Everything and anything he says or does offends her.
Colt kept trying to get Vickie to spend time with him and trying to get her to go out with him, and I just felt like he should have stopped trying and found someone who didn’t see him as the enemy for no reason.
Some of the book when Colt and Vicki finally get together was good. I liked Colt’s mother, who comes to visit, but all the rest of the side characters are in the background and don’t have developed personalities, even Evan.
There is a conflict which was Colt’s fault, but the amount of hate he gets from Vicki and her family was over the top. Yes, he made a mistake, but when compared to Vicki’s constant hostility throughout this whole book, I didn’t think he should have been treated like the worst human being alive.
This book wasn’t for me as I really didn’t like one of the main characters and it interfered with my overall enjoyment of the book.
DNF @ 26%. I wanted to like this one so much, not the MMC. Is a walking red flag. The first time they ever meet, she tells him she's not interested. And then this guy, over and over, blocks her from leaving his presence (multiple times), holds her wrists when she pushes him away from her (multiple times), claims he knows she's really interested and wants to know why she won't give him a chance (they go over this multiple times), and then doesn't accept her answers (also multiple times). This is the first time he's ever met this woman. And this continues to happen every other time they meet. He calls himself from her phone to get her number when she won't give it to him, and shows up at her work in the middle of class (disrupting that class and the class afterwards because he won't leave her and everyone wants his autograph), and he continues to not accept anything but the answers he wants. This is the same guy who one chapter earlier talked about how getting to know a woman for more than one night isn't worth it because he has a child. A child that he ignores signs of needing more attention from. And I'm done. Don't want to read more honestly. There's a different between being persistent and being a Nice Guy™ and I KNOW y'all know what I mean.
I rated one of thos author's books 5 stars😭 now I gotta do a reread of that one because every other has been a disappointment. Unlike book 1 I'm not putting myself through the trial of trying to finish them. Idk why these women are so stubborn, judgemental and bitchy.....you can be a strong woman without being a bitch 😒. The plot is already pretty similar to book 1 and that one almost brought me to tears so I'm tapping out early on this one ✌🏿
I hate when they make black women ‘sassy’ but in a way that just comes off like they’re being unnecessarily rude and then they hit the nail on the coffin when they called her ‘queen’ and then let me not even get started on the cringey way she spoke… like huh?
‘You’re not equipped to ride this ride’ she says about herself to Colt.
Colt Chastain and Victoria (Vickie) Taylor are total opposites and yet as a couple these two work. Colt is an athlete who has clawed his way up whilst Vickie is a rich girl determined to make her own way. The last thing Vickie is interested in is dating an athlete, let alone a single dad.
I really liked Colt and would love to have a man like him in my life. Takeoff is an emotional story with heat and characters that you cannot help but be drawn to. The chemistry between them is palpable and it was entertaining to watch the push and pull as their relationship progressed.
I loved Colt’s relationship with his son Evan, it was heartwarming and totally swoon worthy. It is a fast paced, well written story of learning to love again and trusting that the one you fully open your heart to, will catch you.
I wasn’t expecting to love Vickie and Colt, but I did, SO much! However, I hated the third act breakup and the relationship just didn’t flow like it did before once they got back together. It just felt a little stilted, and just didn’t have the same vibe as the beginning. I’m going to choose to ignore the last like 25% of the book in favor of remember the good times from the earlier portion. Colt actually made me laugh and I really enjoyed their relationship.
If you've ever wanted to read a story where two of the unlikeliest characters end up together, Takeoff is the read for you. Takeoff is a single dad, sports romance, that kind of fits into the enemies to lover’s trope as well. Colt Chastain is a down south, Alabama bred athlete. When he lays eyes on Vickie Taylor, a Black queen in her own rights, he's smitten and intrigued. Their game of cat and mouse is exhausting and entertaining to read, and once these characters' story gets going, its's almost hard to put this book down. "'I'm not into the whole celebrity thing. And I don't go out with athletes or people with kids. I made that clear the night at the club.' I clear my throat and square my shoulders. 'I'm not going to say it again.'"
On the surface, Vickie Taylor appears to be a headstrong, stubborn woman that has cut herself off from love because of her past heartbreak. Her only serious relationship was with her ex, Jerry, and he left her heartbroken and was engaged shortly after that heartbreak. "I'm not the type of girl who swoons. I'm not the type of girl who falls hard for a man. I'm not the girl who believes in happily ever after. People come into your life, and they walk out of it. And it hurts the most when it's the people you love. The ones you least expect to leave. I'm the pragmatic girl. The one who keeps men at a distance. The one who sets the terms in the relationships. I'm the one who walks away, but when I do, I don't leave collateral damage." As you get further into the story, readers will see that Vickie has abandonment issues that she's never dealt with, forcing herself to put a protective barrier around her heart. When she lays eyes on Colt, she's adamant about abiding by her rules. "There are rules my sister and I have when it comes to dating, and she's broken every single one of them to be with Ethan Bradford. Rule one is that we don't date men with kids, and Ethan is a single father with a bitch of an ex-wife. Rule two is my rule, but celebrities and athletes are out. I don't need to be in a relationship with a man and his ego." But Colt is persistent, and once he turns up his southern charm, Vickie isn't so certain she can keep that wall up around her heart.
Colt Chastain appears to perfect. He's a rich basketball player, a single dad, and isn't sleeping with all the women that are thrown at his feet. After being widowed, and a subsequent failed relationship, he decides to focus on his son, Evan. "When I reach for the cold pillow next to me, I'm hit by a sudden bout of loneliness. The love you have for a child can do wondrous things, but it can't fill the deep void of emptiness inside. The kind that can only be fulfilled by another adult human being. The kind that you can hold and kiss, and make love to on a night like tonight. The kind who would wait up for you to get home and jump in your arms when you walk through the door. The kind who will celebrate your wins and mourn your losses along with you." When his teammates force him out one night, he has no regrets after laying eyes on Vickie. She's pretty, and after a brief introduction, he's fascinated by her. Her resistance would be off putting to another man, but not Colt, he has the endurance of a thoroughbred horse. The fact that he's friends with her sister's boyfriend kind of gives him the upper hand in courting her. But right as Colt gets Vickie right where he wants her, something life altering happens. Turning him from this sweet charismatic guy to a guy that's forced to deal with things the only way he knows how. If he thinks he had to work hard to get Vickie the first time, he has now idea how much work he'll have to put in on his second go round. "I would never give you the power to hurt me. The only people who can hurt me never would. But yeah, I let you in further than I've ever let anyone else, and that was obviously a mistake."
When I tell y'all Vickie was on my nerves for the first half of this book. Her resistance to let Colt in was frustrating. When I got to about 58% in this book, I realized something. I was a lot like Vickie, forcing me to have a transparent moment. I then started to try to understand her more and empathize with her. Something very few readers do when reading. That and the obvious elephant in the room, Colt was white. I'm not well versed on interracial romances. I've read a few, and when I find an author that can convey the couple's story without making me cringe, I stick with them. Evelyn has been added to this list. This story was heartwarming and endearing. I loved the family dynamics for both characters. And as an added bonus, this story was free of the word cock (lol). This story is a spin-off to the story Takeover and the characters from Takedown make an appearance as well. I loved this book and whenever Evelyn adds them to another story I will definitely be reading.
Can two people be any more opposite than Vicki and Colt?
The relentless Southern boy from Alabama and the guarded rich girl from New York.
They couldn't have come any more different but they were always destined to be together.. prepare to fall so deeply in love with Colt and Vicki you won't want their story to end...
This wonderful story begins when Colt - our NBA Superstar athlete meets Vicki in an exclusive club in new York. Vicki- A Teacher, couldn't be any less interested in Colt and the fame, good looks and Southern Charm that usually have women falling as his feet have the opposite affect on Vicki. She can't get away from him soon enough.. but poor Vicki will soon learn that Colt isn't one to give up on what he wants. And right now he wants one thing. Vicki.
Vicki has a few dating rules. She doesn't date athletes. Celebrities or single fathers. She's lived a peaceful and private life until Colt comes along and turns everything upside down. Colt. A famous, athlete single father.. you know what they say about Plans and wanting to make God laugh?..
I couldn't put this book down. Their chemistry was instant and off the charts. Their push and pull was so entertaining. And their pace was realistic and satisfying. They weren't perfect which is something else I enjoyed so much about them. They were both flawed and damaged but their love was stronger than all their obstacles.
This is one of Evelyn Sola's best books yet and in my opinion, the steamiest 🔥 Colt was dreamy and filthy hehe. The mouth on this man had me fanning myself.
I'm sad to say goodbye to Colt and Vicki but I hope we get more books that give us an update on them someday.
Tropes: - Athlete/ famous Hero - Reluctant heroine - Interracial (BWWM) - Single father - Steamy 🔥
The lead female character is so dramatic. 🎭🎭🎭🎭 This was a good ending to this series. I will definitely be reading more book written by this author. Just read the damn book.
Great story that captured and held my interest with characters that elicit a visceral response. Colt was a dream but Vickie was frustrating and irritating. Their relationship moved at a believable pace and their love for each other felt genuine. And it ends with an epilogue done right.
I don’t know why but when I started this story, I didn’t really like Victoria when I started this one. But the more I read, the more I kind of liked her sass 😊
Colt Chastain, was sort of happy with his life. He had his basketball and his son, he didn’t need more than that. No strings relationships was it for him. But lately it seems it was just becoming to much for him. So from the minute he meets Victoria Taylor he is hooked. And the more she rejects him the more he wants her… He will do everything he can to make her his, and using his Southern Charm will not be a waste 😊 But just when it seems like everything might be working out for them, something happens that puts him right back to where he started. And this time around its going to take a lot more than his Southern Charm to bring her around…
Vickie Taylor is independent, stubborn and does not need a man. She has her own set of rules for what she stays away from. No athletes, no single dads… So meeting Colt who is adamant that he will make her his, is not part of her plan. But the more time she spends with him and the more he lays on the Southern Charm, she has a feeling that her walls might be crumbling down slowly. But can she trust that he wont break her heart like the men before him…
Like I said I really didn’t like her when I started reading the book. But the more you read the more you understood her and she was just like everyone else trying to protect herself from getting her heart broken again. Colt was totally charming and an awesome father and son. He would do anything for his family and he did. But sometimes there comes a point where you have to look out for yourself. And he had to learn that. I enjoyed the story and the characters. Their inter actions between Colt and Vickie has hilarious at times, and I loved that she didn’t just fall all over him. He really had to work for it. All in all a good read for the first book by this author 😊
I didn’t exactly like or dislike the book, there are parts that are cringey like “my queen, my liege” that I found tough to read. And their whole ‘ I’m not missing you…..I don’t love you” line got annoying because it was so repetitive. There wasn’t much of a plot either so I was really just skim reading through half of the book. Regardless I’m not going to critique the book too much I just wanted to read something quick on my phone.
Oh almost forget, colt talks about his “mama” all the time and brings her up constantly especially when Victoria does something only his mum would do for him. It’s a bit a weird ngl
DNF 15 % The h was super judgy and not worth it The H doesn’t know what boundaries are And if I had to hear about their moms one more time .. my head hurts
This book was a slow burn romance for me. But it was well worth it! If you've read "Takeover" then you got the first look at Colt's interest in Victoria. Victoria had a policy of never dating a athlete, a man with children and she was all about black love. What is it they say about best laid plans? Uh huh. Colt saw Vickie and knew she was his. But Vickie was not gonna make it easy. I loved this book! The storyline was soooo detailed and very captivating. The family drama between Vickie and her mom Alicia was so deep, sad and frustrating at the same time. The way that Colt wouldn't let Vickie shut him out and his southern gentleman's manners was the icing on the cake for me. I just KNEW Vickie was a gonner for sure. Evelyn Sola did THAT with this 3rd installment. And what's up with coach Aiden and Jeannie? And let's not forget Alan and Tilly. The drama, chemistry, comedy, the family angst, the edge of your seat extra crazy drama throughout the book puts this book in my top 20 must read books of 2022. This book more than succeeded my expectations. And the extended epilogue? It's that fiya!! 🔥🔥🔥🔥 I highly recommend this book. Such a great read!!
Vickie definitely has serious abandonment issues so she guards her heart like the Secret Service does any POTUS. She's fiercely independent, strong, and has no problem saying like it is. Colt is a pro basketball player & single father who wants Vickie from the moment he meets her so he sets out to make her his. He's used to women falling all over themselves when he interacts with him, but Vickie isn't like any woman he's encountered, and instead of him walking away, he sees it as a challenge that he's going to win. This journey is bumpy but the sparks are flying so it's just a matter of time before Vickie finally succumbs to their intense attraction. As they go along with this new journey, something happens that blows everything up, and Colt ends up doing something he promised Vickie he wouldn't do, so when he gets his head out of his behind, will she forgive him?! You'll have to hit those one click buttons to find out as I HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
Vickie is strong, independent and has very strict parameters when it comes to the men she allows in her life. She may be attracted to him but between the fact that he is a professional athlete and a single father he already has two strikes against him so she has no interest in pursuing anything with him.
Colt’s life is centered around his career as a professional basketball player and his son Evan. When he meets Vickie he is drawn to her in a way he wasn’t expecting and her lack of interest only makes her more appealing. He is determined to show her that they belong together however a mistake in judgment could derail their relationship before it truly begins.
The chemistry between them is intense and I enjoyed how with the help of those closest to him Colt owned his mistake and was willing to do whatever was necessary to win back Vickie’s heart and trust.
I love basketball so of course I love romance novels with a basketball theme.
Vickie the FMC is the sister to Tara who was featured in the first book in the series, Takeover. Colt is the NBA player who’s interested in Vickie.
A few things: - the witty banter between the two main characters really makes this book - the characters from the takeover figure prominently in this story which I really loved - this book further explores the Taylor families backstory and dynamics - I liked how the interracial story was told and how it affected both main characters - the way the extreme morning sickness affects women during their pregnancies is well depicted
Thoroughly enjoyed this book and I’m sad to end this relationship with them. Read this on my Kindle app.
Best of the series! I instantly fell in love with Vickie and Colt in the other book and their story does not disappoint. These two come to life in a hard to stop, need to know what happens next kinda way. Vickie is no nonsense, tell it like it is, MISS INDEPENDENT. And Colt is the Southern gentleman who always gets his way. Put them in a bottle and shake it and you get heart racing, smile like your bestie got her dream guy, with no shortage of drama, laughs and SPICE 🥵. LOVE IT!
