Kuigi 33-aastane Kara Moon armastab oma Cornwallis asuvat kodulinna Hartmouthi, on ta alatasa mõtisklenud, kas oleks pidanud tegema teoks enda unistuse minna lilleseadekunsti õppima. Ent soovides olla isa läheduses, on Kara kooli lõpetamisest saadik töötanud kohalikul turul lillepoes.
I really tried to get into this book but I found I could not settle. I was unable to connect with the protagonist, Kara, did not believe in the romance and thought more could have been done to direct the plot. In my opinion, this book is too similar to books I have already read this year and the plot is neither focusing on the goings on of Ferry Lane, nor the travels that Kara undertakes.
There seems to have been an increase in books this year that feature a florist and this has really surprised me! At first, I was all over it, but this time I did not find it very engaging. Truth be told, Kara’s employment does not feature that heavily in the story; it is more about her lost opportunities and how awful her boss is (again, something I keep seeing far too often). Although Kara works in a florist, she cannot help but think about how she rejected the opportunity to study and further her career in order to look after her single, broken-hearted dad. This was quite sad and I liked how Kara was given new options as the story progressed.
For about half of the novel, readers witness the daily life at Ferry Lane. I found Kara’s guests rather intriguing but wish they had had more presence in the story. On the other hand, I was frustrated about how long it was taking to get to Kara’s travels. However, when she does eventually leave, I thought the writer could have expanded on this part even more. On reflection, it is like the book is in two halves and they could easily have been separated into two novels. This is my main criticism: is it an exploration of Kara’s family, friends and employment at Ferry Lane? Or is the book about Kara’s travels? For me, each section needed development to really allow me to engage in the story.
I can see the appeal of this book because the setting that May describes is rather lovely! Ferry Lane sounds like the perfect tourist attraction and I enjoyed seeing all the different personalities that Kara is friends with. Furthermore, the character of Pearl was quite sweet and I think she deserved more pages. Coupled with the desire to see more from Kara’s houseguests, perhaps these provide the foundations for the next books in the series?
The adventures of Kara were most interesting to me and I think this should have dominated the plot. In addition, changing the narrative perspective whilst Kara was on her travels would have enriched the narrative further, especially if the story focused on Pearl or Billy. Instead, I thought the story merely touched upon these key themes and I was frustrated I could not see more of them.
Whilst the characters and setting are spot on, I wish the writer had been more definitive about the direction of the plot. It is an enjoyable story of two parts and I liked watching Kara evolve over the story. However, personally, I think I was hoping to see more of an escape from Ferry Lane to add a bit of extra flavour to the plot.
With thanks to Hodder Stoughton and Rachel’s Random Resources for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
The perfect start to another delightful series from Nicola May! Kara is a florist who has returned home to her small town after university. After she’s been done dirty by her partner she resorts to renting out a room in her apartment as an Airbnb. This seems to create a stir in this small town. Kara is at the end of her rope until she receives a mysterious letter that ultimately sends her on a dream trip around the world. Kara was a sympathetic and likable character who I loved getting to know throughout this book. I really loved the small-town vibe of Fairy Lane, not going to lie I was a little sad at first when Kara started on her travels. However I soon got caught up in the fun and mystery of the trip. The thought and planning that went into this trip was pretty amazing. I also thought it was extremely brave of Kara to embark on this trip not having any idea where she was going, where she was staying, what she was doing. I am not certain I would be as trusting as she was? There was so much packed in this lovely gem of a book that made me want to pack my bags and take a trip around the globe. Looking forward to the next book in the series!
This book in emojis 💐 ✈ ️🗽 🦘 ✉️ *** Big thank you to Hodder for my gifted copy of this book. All opinions are my own. ***
Nicola May is onto the start of another winning series here, as I loved Welcome to Ferry Lane Market and already feel the wait for the next book will be too long to cope with!
Admittedly I did find it took a while to feel fully at home with this book, I was missing Hot the dog from Cockleberry Bay (from the author's previous series), although a cat called James Bond and a terrapin called Sid Vicious are great animal companions, to go alongside Kara, and everyone at Ferry Lane market.
I really took to Kara quite quickly and once I sorted out all the other characters I was fully engrossed in the story, The sheer amount of story, character developments, surprises that are jam packed into this book is so impressive, and it all works together so well.
For me the book really took off to another gear of my love of it when the plane ticket to New York that is mentioned in the blurb, happens. I won't go into details as its far enough into the story that it would be spoilery - but the travel lover in me was loving Kara who has barely never left Cornwall, suddenly abroad and seeing how she sees the world, and gains confidence is just so wonderful to see.
Kara is loyal to her family, who I really enjoyed getting to know, has a fab best friend, Star, and a nightmare of a boss who clearly doesn't appreciate Kara.
Full of heart, mystery, laughter, travel, hear warming moment, humour, romance, mystery, set to a great back drop with incredibly real characters that you will take to your heart, this is a gem of a book!
There is just so much to love about this book, and feel like it has set up the rest of the series perfectly, given how much I really want to read the next book instantly!
Thank you to Hodder and Netgalley for this copy which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily.
Ja.
What a fabulous start to a gorgeous new series! I loved meeting florist Kara Moon and watching her bloom (excuse the pun!) as she discovers not only who has arranged her trip of a lifetime but who she really is. Welcome to Ferry Lane Market is fun, feisty and full of fascinating friends and family. I highly recommend taking a trip to Ferry Lane Market as you're guaranteed to leave with a smile on your face and a warm glow in your heart.
Nicola is an absolute queen of the genre and I really enjoyed this lovely story. The setting seems so real it was weird to close the book and realise I wasn't actually there! Can't wait for more in this series.
It had been quite a while since I read a book from this author, so I was excited to see where this would take me.
What a wonderfully warm read. The characters were easy to love (or in some cases hate) and in no time at all Ferry Lane felt homely and familiar to me. I was quickly reminded why I enjoyed Nicola May’s books so much.
Before I knew it, I found myself about halfway through the book and in floods of tears. It’s strange because I was expecting it to happen but still felt shocked when it did, this is a storyline that pulls you in and makes you feel involved.
The mystery surrounding Kara’s trip had me coming up with all sorts of theories as to who was responsible. When a handful of coincidences presented themselves, I was able to narrow it down to a few possibilities and yes, one of my theories was correct.
Throughout the storyline, various characters shared a number of insightful, and somewhat deep, sayings that I know I will take away with me. I really love it when a book touches my life in an unexpected way.
Favourite Moments:
• Blind date • Sid Vicious and James Bond • Seed smuggling • Yellow envelopes
This was a surprisingly touching story filled with warm characters and important life lessons. A must read!
I was so in the mood for a cutesy, small-town Cornwall story and there were glimpses of that in this book. But then there were unexpected and unnecessary crude moments, and things such as the protagonist calling herself a slut that felt really off. There were also overly lengthy, negative, and somewhat misogynistic descriptions of the way the main character looked – almost as if this was written by a man.
Also, storyline wise suddenly mid-way through the main character goes on a whirlwind trip around the world. This felt so out of place with the rest of the story, and not enough time was spent to fully explore the locations she went to, that it felt like I'd suddenly picked up an entirely different book. Odd.
I really don’t know why people gave this four or five stars. This book was very disorganized; there is a lot going on for the protagonist and everyone in town. We’re supposed to think the new man she chooses to be with is good for her, but they seem to have a lot of trouble communicating and they both are mean to each other and that does not seem like an improvement over her ex-boyfriend. There are also a lot of negative comments about her weight and the weight of other people and it was very upsetting to read.
Amazing! This was my first book by Nicola May and it certainly won’t be the last.
There were such amazing descriptions of places that I really felt I was there. The characters were brilliantly described and there were many funny interactions. I identified with Kara, she’d spent so long trying to be the safe and sensible one, the one to hold things together that she didn’t know who she really was on her own and I enjoyed watching her journey of self discovery. I loved Billy and the happy carefree relationship he and Kara had, his feelings were on his sleeve all along but Kara never once believed them as her self worth was shattered. Grandad Harry was the most perfect character and my heart broke along with Kara and the Moon family. Seeing all her friends rally around her and support her and help her have the most epic adventure was lovely and the twists and turns kept me reading faster and faster. I can’t wait to read more books about these characters.
This was my first book by this author and won’t be my last as I just loved it so well written and great characters and the plot is brilliant from the first page I was drawn in to the story and wanted to read more. Full of heartbreak and families and moving forward and travelling to find yourself again. Has plenty of hope and about friendship in it as well and you will want to read it for sure. Kara has lived in Hartmouth in Cornwall all her life and she loves it here but her mum left when she was young and her sister left the village and when she came to leave school she hadn’t got the heart to leave her dad and follow her dream of doing floristry and she ends up working on the market for a florist but she doesn’t like her boss very much she has just so,it from her boyfriend as well and now renting her room out in her small flat. Her grandfather passes away and she loved him so much but suddenly a postcard comes through her door and it has a plane ticket to New York. She doesn’t think she can go but she speaks with her boss and she ends up jacking her job in as she’s had enough and she heads off away and whoever set this up has planned everything but she wants to know who it is but she has experiences she never thought she would have and starts learning more about herself. So when she heads home will she find romance again or not and can she be happy and find a job and will she learn who set all this up for her.
There is a saying that goes something like this: No one is going to come along and save you, you need to save yourself. That applies to the main character in this book. She is such a sweetheart and always ready to help everyone around her, but she puts herself at a low priority. After eight years in a relationship that was not good for her, she finally breaks it off. That leads to a new life full of adventures she never would have thought she would experience.
This was the first book I have read by Nicola May, but it certainly will not be the last! I enjoyed her writing style so much. Her character development is amazing and I feel like I know the people in this story so well. She created a unique plot that was a page turner. I am thrilled that this is the beginning of a new series.
I will be reading her other books in the future. I know they will be wonderful from my experience with Welcome to Ferry Lane Market!
I want to thank NetGalley and Hodder & Stoughton for giving me the pleasure of reading the advance reader copy, with no obligation to write a review. My review is written freely as a hobby, and is totally my own opinion, not influenced by receiving the ARC.
I always love a book with a strong sense of community – and there’s an equally well established sense of place in Kara’s home town of Hartmouth, beautifully described. Ferry Lane Market really was everything I wanted it to be – springing to life from the book’s pages, with a cast of wonderful characters ripe for development in the books that follow this first in series.
Kara herself is one of those characters that you can’t help but take to your heart, but she has been a bit of a doormat in the past – cheating boyfriend Jago has been using her since he moved in eight years before (along with his vicious terrapin Sid Vicious), but she’s finally seen the light and shown him the door, and it’s time to start her own life. She works on the market as a florist – she’s never done any qualifications for all sort of reasons, mainly because of her need to be around to support her father who runs the ferry across the bay. Her boss might be a bit of a nightmare, but she’s surrounded by people who love her and we slowly get to know them all rather better.
Living alone for the first time, she needs an additional source of income – and egged on by her best friend Star, decides to turn her main bedroom into an Airbnb. That leads her to encounter a succession of interesting guests from around the world, who widen her horizons and make her yearn to see the world a little for herself now that her father seems to be becoming a bit more settled and self sufficient. She has no idea who the mystery benefactor might be who sends her a ticket to New York, but it’s an opportunity she really can’t turn down – but it’s the start of a globetrotting adventure she could never have imagined, and just the beginning of quite a major personal journey too.
There was so much I enjoyed about this book. I’ve mentioned the community already, and the characters were quite wonderfully developed – but something I particularly loved was Kara’s family relationships, her rather fragile father, but particularly lovely and wise grandfather Harry. At first, I’ll admit I found that whole storyline about the possibilities of her father being able to move on was perhaps what engaged me the most – although Kara is in her thirties she seemed rather younger, and I was less engaged by the twists and turns of her personal story and naturally gravitated towards the older characters and their lives. But my focus and interest did change as the book developed – Kara’s journey became centre stage, fully drew me in, and I was happy to follow it wherever it went.
On the romantic front, it’s clear that Billy – who works the ferry with Kara’s father – holds a torch for her, but she really can’t see it, and it’s bound to take some time after the damage done by Jago. Their relationship does start to develop quite nicely though, despite a series of misunderstandings and his tendency to flounce off at the least provocation.
And I haven’t mentioned the book’s humour – there are certainly plenty of smiles and laugh-out-loud moments (I particularly liked the interventions by James Bond, Kara’s characterful cat – and Sid certainly has his moments too), all really nicely woven into the story and very well judged. The emotional touch throughout is just right too – there’s a real warmth about the writing that I really enjoyed, particularly through the relationships with the friends and family who surround Kara with care and love, and I can fully understand why the author’s writing has won her so much praise.
Yes, I rather enjoyed this one. This is a lovely series in the making, and I’ll be more than happy to spend more time in Ferry Lane Market – I’ve made friends, and I do really like it there.
I've tried so hard to like this book. I think Nicola May is so sweet, but this book was a miss for me. I started listening to it in Dutch, well I HATED that copy. Can't say it any other way. Then I switched back to English and decided to start over to give it a good shot, but the damage was done. I did feel like the translation to Dutch wasn't done very well, especially when I listened to the English version. In my opinion the accents in the English Audiobook were overdone and totally unnecessary.
Tried really hard to love this book, by even switching languages in the Audiobook but it didn't do it for me. I just didn't connect with the main character and was actually annoyed by her most of the time. The setting is amazing in this book and I can totally understand people diving in the other 2 books, because Hartmouth is such a cute place! I'm leaving this series behind with this book. So many good books, so little time!
Thank you NetGalley for sending me this arc. I absolutely devoured this book. With its short chapters it was very much a just one more chapter kinda read when one lead to about 5!! I haven’t read a @author_nicola book before but it definitely won’t be the last.
It was heartwarming, joyful, and full of adventure now where did I put book 2!!
A wonderfully heart-warming start to a new series by bestselling author, Nicola May-such a great summer read I literally couldn’t put this down.
After finding out her dead beat boyfriend is cheating on her and has spent all of her savings,Kara Moon finally dumps him and starts renting out her flat on Air BnB. Then a series of postcards begin to arrive which lead her on three very life changing trips, teaching her some very valuable life lessons, and finding love along the way.
It’s set in Cornwall,in a town called Hartmouth and centring on the town’s infamous Ferry Lane Market- where Kara works as a florist. The warmth and friendship from this small community was written so well,Ferry Lane and it’s inhabitants felt truly alive. I loved Kara, her best friend Star and Kara’s mischievous grandfather, Harry. Her cat James Bond is equally as mischievous and I couldn’t help but laugh at some of his antics.
The mystery surrounding the identity of the post card (and plane ticket) sender was interesting, I suspected a few of the characters and was very happy when the identity of the sender was finally revealed. I also really enjoyed the (very satisfying) ending and cannot wait to read the rest of the series.
An uplifting tale of hope, friendship and family- there were moments that made me laugh and cry but I really enjoyed it, Nicola May is such an incredible writer I cannot believe I haven’t read any of her books before.
And also a massive thank you to Hodder&Stoughton and NetGalley for the ARC
Welcome to Ferry Lane by Nicola May a five-star read you will love to the moon and back. This is number one in the series and the first story that I have read by this author and I really hope it won’t be the last, as I really enjoyed the storytelling and felt swept away on a tugboat of wonder. This story will take you on a journey, both literal and emotional. Kara Moon will make you care about her, she has this amazing passion about her that sucks you in, her love of flowers and Ferry Lane will just make you fall in love with the words on the page. All of the characters are so sublime and well done, I can’t wait to find out more about them. There are a couple I am so eager to hear about, like the mysterious Monique, and the deliciously creative Frank, but most of all its Star I am eager to hear about, as she already has a story to tell and I feel like we are just getting to the really good bits.
I loved the Cockleberry Bay books, so I knew I'd love this, the first in a new series by Nicola. The perfect escapism to brighten up your day! Loveable characters, humour, romance & a tinge of sadness, all made for another fab read & I'm looking forward to reading more of this series.
Kara Moon (33) lives in the Cornish village of Hartmouth with her unemployed partner Jago, her cat James Bond & Sid Vicious the terrapin. Working on the flower stall at the market to make ends meet, she often wonders if she should have followed her dreams; a broken relationship & the death of her beloved Grandfather later, she receives a postcard, along with a ticket to New York. Will she go & just who is her mystery benefactor?🗽
Many thanks to Netgalley for my ARC in return for my honest review.

A very lovely and sweet romance that I read in no time! This is a page-turner! Nicola May is a really good author and if you pick this book you won't be disappointed. Also I was delighted to learn that this book is a first one of a series! What a nice surprice! Can't wait to read the second book!!!!
I've read The Corner Shop in Cockleberry Bay by Nicola May before and liked the book, but didn't love it enough to actually pick up the rest of the series. Feelgood is always a bit of a grey area for me. It can have things I really love, but the outcome of the story might really wreck my reading experience. Unfortunately, this book just didn't quite hit the mark for me and ended up being a three-star read.
One of the things I love about feel-good books is that the writing style is wonderfully comfortable. The sentences run smoothly and without you knowing it, you've finished half the book. What Nicola May often does, however. is lingering on descriptions, both of environments and of women. She often describes the cute buildings on Ferry Lane, which adds to the world building, but we also regularly read about the appearance of women, while that does not add much to the rather smooth storyline. I don't quite care how perky ones boobs are in a bright pink top. I'd rather read more about what she looks like. Does she have pimples, does her hair frizz up when it's hot outside etc.
That being said, it is only halfway through the book that Kara receives her first plane ticket. The first part of the book, however important for the second half of the story, feels a bit long-winded. The story is slightly predictable and also somewhat implausible. Who would get on a plane with a ticket bought for you? And how do you get the necessary travel papers to get through customs? The final revelation as to who was behind the mysterious journey was, despite all my doubts, suspicions and guesses, a pleasant surprise.
It does make the reader spontaneously want to book a trip to Cornwall. The author describes Hartmouth so thoroughly it reminded me of Stars Hollow from the popular series Gilmore Girls. The town is described as a real tourist location and the descriptions of the beach, the ferries and all the cute little shops really helped to form a wonderful picture of this lovely town.
The large cast of characters helps give the story some spice, but with so many people passing through, it can be difficult to tell the characters apart. Fortunately, they all have significantly different personalities, which does make it a little easier for the reader. But be warned, some of the characters might annoy you to no end!
Kara, our 33-year-old shy and naive protagonist really grows into a brave, self-confident woman in this book. Though I doubt this big of a change can happen in a span of three weeks it makes for a pleasant arc for her personal growth.
All in all, this is a wonderful book to take to the beach or to sink into the garden chair with. Unfortunately, there were too many logistical questions that got in the way of me truly enjoying this book.
I received a digital ARC of this book, in exchange for an honest review. Having loved the Cockleberry Bay series, I was really looking forward to this new release, and Im delighted to say that I wasn’t disappointed. Once again, Nicola May has created a community filled with characters who I am eager to learn more about. The main focus in this book is on Kara and her family. Originally named Kerensa, a gorgeous Cornish name, she is known as Kara to all except her family. Close to her adorable Grandfather and her father, Kara has a strained relationship with her sister as they see their priorities quite differently. Abandoned before reaching her teenage years, Kara is completely estranged from her mother. With so many fabulous characters, it’s almost impossible to pick a favourite, but if pressed, it would have to be Pearl. The change that she brings to the family dynamic is wonderful and her nature practically leaps from the page. Kara is beautifully written and it’s impossible not to fall in love with her and wish her nothing but happiness. Of course, she’s a long way from perfect yet her slightly embarrassing antics manage to make her even more likeable. As the synopsis explains, Kara works on a market flower stall. She has a natural flair, and as the story progresses, it soon becomes clear that she is being taken advantage of. The story shifts a gear when a mysterious postcard arrives, along with airline tickets for a trip to New York. As this adventurous element of the story begins to unfold, we meet a new and interesting Kara. No longer restricted by the confines of her life at home, she soon adapts to her new challenges, and I felt myself hoping that she would discover a braver version of herself. Of course, I was also trying to work out who her mysterious benefactor could be. I could go on, but would find myself giving spoilers, and that must be avoided at all costs. I’ll close by saying that I am already looking forward to the next instalment, especially after reading the taster at the end of this book.
Kara Moon lives in Hartmouth with her unemployed boyfriend Jago, a terrapin called Sid Vicious and her cat James Bond. Kara has always lived in Hartmouth and has never left. The Moon family have a long connection to Hartmouth as they have been running the ferry since the 1950s. She has worked on the flower stall in the Market owned by Lydia (twisty knickers) since she turned 18. Kara is seemingly happy with her life until she discovers Jago has been cheating on her and has cleaned out her savings. Now single and looking to boost her income Kara turns her home into an Airbnb where she meets a number of different people who are visiting Hartmouth, including Jack, the very good looking Angel and Jonesy.
Then Kara receives a note and a ticket to New York but has no idea who it’s from. Stepping outside her comfort zone Kara travels to New York and then further notes send her to Barcelona and Australia, but who is sending theses notes and why? So starts Kara’s adventure where she will have to step out of her comfort zone and put herself first for once.
I loved everything about this book from the storyline to the characters. The idea of a mysterious person sending Kara on an adventure was just perfect. I had an inkling about who that mystery person was but as the story continued I kept changing my mind and I didn’t guess who that person was. When I found out it was a nice surprise.
One character I adored was Kara’s friend Billy. He is lovely, mischievous and cocky. It’s clear from the outset that he likes Kara more than just a friend, but Kara doesn’t see it. The moments between the two were truly heart-warming and there was definitely a spark there that was more than just friends. I mean if a man sees you projectile vomit on his trainers and still tries to comfort you then he’s definitely a keeper. As a character Kara cares very much for her family and friends, sometimes putting the needs of others over her own. Kara really is quite a funny character and her parting gift to Lydia made me giggle. I will never look at lasagne the same way again. This review wouldn’t be complete without mentioning Kara’s grandpa who is just adorable. This book made me both laugh and cry, there were tears when I read the airport scene with the letter. Also how can I not mention the book cover. As soon as the book arrived I wished I could visit the village on the cover. This is the first book in a new series and I can’t wait to read the next book Starry Skies in Ferry Lane Market
If you like books with unforgettable characters based in a quaint and homely place this is the book for you.
