This an incredible book. This is a myst read gor an parent of a child or children with ADHD. Vivian Foster gives advice not only for informative published studies of ADHD but also for her own experience of her own child and other children she has worked with ADHD.
The book starts off with what ADHD is and the different types of conditions of it. Then she goes on to what worked for her, what did not work, but could work for someone else as every child with ADHD is different. Then, her 8 step program was created from her own experience. Then, a message to parents to take care of themselves as well.
It's a great all-around book. Strategies to try with children, possibly what to expect, and not to give up. Also, a message that as parents, we are not alone. Other parents are also dealing with their children's needs when it comes to ADHD.
This book is well-written and full of good advice for anyone taking care of a child with ADD or ADHD. I especially love the way the author encourages adults to set positive examples by modeling appropriate coping behaviors. As I have a child with ADHD, I know all too well how easy it is to become frustrated. I never thought about speaking to my child about this feeling and showing him how I work through it. Another gem from this book is to make sure to continuously keep positive communication and problem-solving amongst all of the adults that teach or care for the child. Although often much easier said than done, this is always an extremely worthy goal toward which to strive.
I enjoyed reading this. The author is obviously passionate about the subject matter both as a parent and an educator and I found a lot of the information helpful and relevant.
A note of caution. I am in the UK and the author is in the US and it is obvious. A lot of the advice offered is directly based on the US health care system and not necessarily something that is automatically offered or needed elsewhere.
