The walls of Sparta loom over the heads of Centurion Marcus Varro and his companions, Curio and Falco. War once again rises in in the wake of Macedonia's defeat, and Rome demands a swift and decisive victory.
Pulled from the infantry line for a special assignment, Varro and his companions dare to infiltrate Sparta. The blood-thirsty King Nabis rules through fear and murder. Spartans who would be free of his tyranny await them in the shadows of Sparta's alleys, ready to launch a revolt with Rome's aid.
Yet disasters plague the three Roman infiltrators at the walls of the city. Chaos and torment hound them. Varro, Falco, and Curio are caught in a desperate bid to survive and still fulfill their mission. But their enemies are more resourceful -- and ruthless -- than ever expected.
The Forgotten Heroes of Rome has been an excellent series. Full of blood, guts, treachery and political intrigue. Three young friends, heroes of Rome one and all, work clandestinely behind enemy lines and risk their lives in a never ending circle of violence. Their enemy this time was the mighty Sparta, a cruel and unrelenting foe. Throw a few spies and traitors into the mix and you have one hell of a tale. Highly recommended!
I've read the previous books in this series and they do stand alone well.
This one less so. While it's historical fiction all these books are based off of some form of actual history and authors take varying levels of 'creativeness' when filling in unknown gaps, this was a complete stretch as a stand alone but added to the series, the main characters "antics" are ridiculous. Yes it's fiction, but its similar to the Jack Reacher series, originally fantastic, now so ridiculous I've stopped reading them, even just as a single book. This series follows exactly the same route, excellent well set books that make you feel like you're there and pouring over each page and worth the read! The previous book was good but the same thoughts were there, borderline unbelievable, how many lives do these three have, how ridiculous their "adventures" are becoming, the places and people of importance begin lacking description, it just becomes vague and sub par to the quality of the start of the series or only ever reminding the reader of the three main characters facial features or another's size etc. This book went a step further down that rabbit hole! I would still recommend the series, maybe just stop when you reach the "head shaking too much" point! After the last book I only read this for free as part of my Kindle Unlimited subscription, the first books I'd happily buy. Will I finish the series? I haven't decided...
I was disappointed after reading first 5 books. I lost interest approx half way, skipping pages and finally putting book down without completing book, which I haven’t done in years. Going to hold off on number 7,next book. All previous series books, 1-5, held my interest quite well.
Varro and company's most exciting and unbelievable story of bravery and fortune combining to defy death at every turn while managing to open the ancient worlds most impregable city to the legions.
Great series. I'm A Roman teen actor and found the books authentic and exciting. Makes me feel bad for Marcus, he's always getting trapped on. When is book X coming?
