Rate this book
God’s grace and the healing power of gratitude bring a second chance of happiness to lives shattered by loss. Seeking to leave behind emotional scarring brought about by another's cruelty, Grace Miller setsout to start over in a new town. When Michael Kensington knock's on Grace's door, he discovers the same beautiful young woman he treated with brash rudeness only days before in a chance encounter. Forced to swallow his pride and apologize for his behavior, Michael begins a friendship with Grace that becomes a lifeline for both he and his daughter. The opportunity to help one another find grace and healing fills life for Grace and Michael in a way neither dared to dream was possible.

Gratitude absolves unwarranted guilt, and faith dissolves fear - these truths bring healing to the characters in this captivating first novel by Shaun Lorraine Brown. About the author

I have always loved to write. It is possible that earning first place in a 5th grade writing contest sparked my desire to be an author and a journalist. God blessed me with the ability to communicate through the written word, and I have always wanted to use that gift to help others. As a college student, I volunteered with the underground newspaper - spotlighting issues and individuals who might have been overlooked by the campus paper.
As a young mother of four kids under five, we lived in the outskirts of New York City. I recall strapping on my cross country skis to navigate the blizzard of the decade and deliver my human interest stories to the Tarrytown News office inside the deadline. When my husband took a job in Liberty Lake Washington, I planned to write for the local paper - but there wasn't one. Liberty Lake wasn't even a town. So I joined with a group of citizens working to incorporate the community and found myself starting a local newspaper.
For five years I worked in the wee hours of the morning to write, layout, publish, and deliver a weekly paper for our community of 3500 souls. I loved the connections that came as I shared successes, heartbreaks, hope and opportunity - informing and educating through the pages of the Liberty Lake Splash. Selling the Splash was hard to do as I considered it my sixth child - from its inception I had poured much of my heart and soul into the publication. But I did sell because my family had always come first.
As my children grew, journalism took a back seat to volunteering, cheering, prom dress construction, and eventually scholarship application editing. My first book grew out of the experience I gained shepherding five chlldren through the challenges of applying for and funding college. "Seven Steps to Scholarship Success" wrapped all the insights I had gained into a short read for middle school and high school students.
When my fifth child headed off to college, I went back to work full time - a writing job of course. And I loved it, but the technical writing during the day did not satiate my appetite for other types of writing. In time, I tackled a collection of stories about my mother's childhood in the small town of John Day, Oregon. Family history research is one of my passions, and writing my mother's history through her own stories was a delightul project. The illustrations in "Suzie Scott Stories" were drawn by her many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
My most recent project, and first fiction book, was published May 2022. Double Grace is a sweet story of the healing power of gratitude and was truly a joy to create. For years the characters and story germinated in my mind but I could never settle on the name of the female protagonist. This challenge stood as a roadblock to actually writing the story. When the name "Grace" came into my head, I knew it was her name, and from there the story just flowed. In a matter of weeks I had 30,000 words and I found the writing extremely enjoyable. I actually felt a little guilty to be enjoying the project so much, and wondered if there were more important things God wanted me to be doing with my time. And then in April, I listened to my good friend address our church congregation, reminding us of the prophet's admonition to allow the healing power of gratitude into our lives. Gratitude, I realized, was just what would heal my male protagonist, and I couldn't wait to get home and weave that theme into my novel. I may not sell a lot of books, but it is my hope that someone will be helped or healed by my writing.
Now that I am a grandmother, I have turned my efforts to children's literature - stories that will help young children recognize how much God loves them and how to get help from God in their daily lives. The first project, entitled "The Best Ideas Come from God," is my first hardcopy book. I am very excited by the hope that at least one child will be blessed by the message.
