A life sentence at a prison for the criminally insane should have been a death sentence for Dexter Elias. He was raised to seek carnage at every opportunity and to never take no for an answer.
Then Megan Shroud walked into a group counseling session and his perception immediately changed.
Little Ms. Skitzo in a floral dress with eyes that reveal she’s danced with the devil and won wasn’t a part of Dexter’s game plan, but when his interest in the demure wallflower peaks, so does his psycho tendencies.
Megan is broken... just like Dexter.
She is psychotic... just like Dexter.
But more than anything, she wants revenge on the people who locked her away...
Just. Like. Dexter.
Together, they will be unstoppable… until feelings become involved.

I love writing and reading. They are both my passion. My genre is generally set to new adult and contemporary, with a few twists thrown in.
So…….that was … interesting? Mentally disturbing? .. I feel sullied.
This isn’t what I’d class as a dark romance. This is a psychological effed up take on what can only be described as a toxic relationship at its worst.
In a nutshell this is what I took from this book.. and be warned there are SPOILERS ahead.
Dexter Ellis is psychologically disturbed. Largely due to the fact his dad used to have sex with his mum while Dex lay next to her. So is Claudia/Megan Shroud. I can’t remember why. But I do remember she’s mute, so there’s that. They go on a weird Bonnie and Clyde type thing. He gets off on watching her kill people. She’s a virgin who his dad wants to deflower (it’s his thing) She slits his dads throat when he tells her too. They go to a motel. He forces her to give the clerk a blow job. But with his eyes, tells her to bite it and then she kills him. Then he takes her while she’s covered in blood. Takes her virginity then makes her clean his willy of her blood.
That’s all I got cos the need was strong to skim it because as messed up as it was I kind of needed to know what happened. Yeah, I know, I eye-rolled hard at myself too.
Now I’m not one to judge, so if this is your jam, more power to ya hun. BUT, and it’s a big but, when the word Munched is used to describe the act of someone taking a chunk from a guys todge because her sociopathic, schizophrenic, mentally deranged kind-of boyfriend tells her to, WITH HIS EYES, I have to draw the line. I mean munched - come on people .. MUNCHED !!
I’m off to bleach my eyes of everything they just absorbed. Maybe even dip them in some sort of bicarb and vinegar concoction, because right now they feel like they’re never gonna recover from this one.
A definite must read. I have never read any dark romance books and this one had me hooked. I could not put it down once I started. There was many twists and turns that left me wanting more. So happy I didn’t shy away. You will not regret reading it.
I never thought I could be so caught up with empathy for people like this but this story does that. It provides you with background stories and details that make you play the scenes so vividly in your mind.
Shandi Boyes definitely went in on psychopaths, their mentality, and their actions. I have never enjoyed reading a book like this until this book was placed in my path. Thank you for going above and beyond to keep us entertained. I definitely enjoyed the development of the characters. This book could easily be read as a stand alone book, however, if you need more background information about our loved misfits, you need to read Nick’s story and Marcus’s story. Never I'd say this but hey, even psychopaths are allowed to fall in love.
Genre: Dark Romance Book Length: Novel POV: Alternating Dual Setting: A psychiatric hospital and other places along the way. Anti-Hero: Dexter Elias has done some horrible things and has been convicted and sentenced to a psychiatric hospital for the criminally insane. Dexter is 28, handsome, manipulative and very intelligent. He has steel-blue eyes and black hair. Anti-Heroine: Claudia/Megan Shroud is also a patient at the same psychiatric hospital and has a very disturbing past. She is 28, has brown hair and hazel eyes and is mute. Endearment: Not really Spice Level: Low Frequency of Spice: Low Angst Level: Medium Standalone/Duet/Series: Standalone, but connected to other series. Cliffhanger: No Epilogue: Yes My Review: This is my first time reading a book by this author. While I was intrigued enough by this story, I did feel a bit lost as I had not read any prior series where the main characters are featured. Dexter and Megan are psychotic and very dangerous and their story is crazy, insane and super violent. I can’t say that I loved this book, it was something totally different than what I normally read, but I did appreciate the courage to write something so wild and unorthodox. I’ll definitely be checking out more from her in the future. I’d say I recommend this book if you’re looking to take a ride on the crazy train and don’t get triggered easily.
The Misfits is everything the blurb promises and more. This is a standalone book, but to get the full background it helps if you have read Nick’s story in 'Player of Life' and Marcus and Cleo’s story in the 'Chains series.'
Who knew two psychos could grab you in such a way you almost, almost feel empathy for them? Their back story and childhood traumas are filled with horrors we can’t even imagine. This is a twisted kind of love story. One that makes you happy they found each other but also fills you with dread that they did.
Although this is very different to Shandi’s other books, it is a testament to her storytelling that it has drawn me in and loving these characters, despite hoping to never cross paths with their likes in real life. This is one twisty page-turner you won’t be able to put down!
Wow. I’m not sure where to begin. Dark romance is one of my favorites- this being said this book is definitely one of the darkest and craziest I have ever read. I was immediately drawn in from the prologue as it mentioned Cleo and Marcus and having loved that series, I wasn’t sure where this was going to be headed. Dexter and Megan have the most heartbreaking childhoods, which has clearly impacted them in so many ways. Dexter meets Megan inside Meadow Fields, he decides right away when he sees her that she’s going to be his ticket out of there, and he will use her until he doesn’t need her anymore. Megan just wants to get back to Nick, and finds protection and comfort in Dexter so she thinks he will help. As soon as they decided to essentially help one another to get what they want..this story takes you on an absolute crazy roller coaster ride of emotions. My jaw dropped so many times, I wasn’t sure what was going on. Just when I thought I finally had them figured out, it did a complete flip and I was left trying to figure out what their plan was next. Even as there were shocking things that happened through out the whole story the ending is what really got me. This is one love story.. you definitely won’t forget.
I really don't know how to feel about "The Misfits" I'm a little bit confused about my thoughts and feelings NOT because it's a bad book, ABSOLUTELY NOT! 🤭
At the beginning I didn't really enjoy it and thought about stop reading it but then somehow I continued the book and I'm glad I did.
"The Misfits" got me laughing😂, smiling😊, cringing😬, confusing🤨, exiting🤩 and crying😭!
I've never read a book like this one before, there were lots of new emotions included and from another point of view because the characters were totally different than others!!
There weren't "too many" 🌶 scenes, BUT I think the 🌶 scenes were in my opinion kinda enough cause "The Misfits" isn't a "regular" smut romance book, the book deals with many other serious issues in a very unique way which makes these scenes to perfect the book. (The book was pretty steamy despite it😶🌫️😉)
I revived a ARC of this book . Shandi defiantly got into the head of a psycho while writing this one . It is much darker than most of her work and check trigger warnings but, I liked it a lot . Dexter and Megan are a match made in crazy heaven . Dexter is charming when needed and ruthless when needed. Megan is quiet and pulls off the innocent wouldn’t hurt a fly look in a sun dress ,Both of them are batshit crazy .This book offers a trip into two psychos minds and thought process and what makes them tick . I never truly knew what was going to happen next , definitely not your traditional book or traditional HEA . I didn’t expect most of what happened to happen and I really enjoyed the suspense that built through out the book.
I absolutely loved this book. It is definitely darker than my usual reads and yet held me completely captive. I could not put it down!
It is a deep dive into the human psyche, it pulls you into the minds of those that are considered dangerous to society and is written in such a way that you are compelled to keep reading.
It provides an insight into the darker side of life and how those people also want what anyone wants, what they consider to be a ‘normal for them’ life.
I was both disturbed and intrigued by this storyline and the characters within in it.
If you like things a little dark and dirty then this is definitely for you.
What have I just read! Mind blown! I loved it, who knew 2 crazies would make such an amazing couple. Megan was really quite endearing- can’t believe I am writing that! When you hear hers and Dexters back story my heart melted for them, no one should have an upbringing like that. These 2 were made for each other, they accepted each other for what they were and at the end of the day made each other happy. They fought to be together and thank goodness for the epilogue! A fantastically dark book- you have been warned no sweet love story here, but a love story none the less! I loved it.
Have you ever read a book or seen a movie that just… makes you stop and look over your shoulders and wonder if someone is watching you? (shivering) Well, Dexter is the Master and we are his captive audience. And I’m truly excited about what he’s going to do.
This book is definitely worth reading and I am definitely looking forward to more…
Any opinions expressed within this review are solely and uniquely made by me and I am happily leaving this review. I originally voluntarily received an advanced copy of this book via bsprout.
WOW!!!! This book is simply amazing, I couldn’t put it down!!! This is the story of Dexter and Megan who have both been in previous series and are equally both psychotic as each other in the best way. I loved this book so much and I highly recommend it to everyone who loves dark romance cause that is exactly what you’re getting with this book.
Holy smokes. That is all I have to say. This is a book best read with absolutely no information. I am still not exactly sure what I just read. I just know that I gave it ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️!! This book is so perfectly insane that I know that it will stick with me for a long time. When you fight for characters that you should 100% hate, you know the author has done their job masterfully.
“The evil in his eyes encourages mine to flourish.”
🔥 Thank you Shandi Boyes for the ARC!!
Spice: 3/5 🌶
🔥 When Shandi Boyes said that this was going to be a different kind of book than she has written before and that this one was going to be dark, I almost didn’t believe her. But from the moment I started reading, the first sentence of the prologue, I knew this story was going to be different & I’m glad I got to experience it!
🔥 Megan/Claudia 🥺❤️🩹. I sadly misjudged Megan when I was first introduced to her character (in the Enigma series)🫶🏻 She has been through so so much. Megan looks like the kind of girl that couldn’t hurt a fly, so sweet & so innocent, but one wrong move & she would unleash her wrath on you.
🔥 Now Dexter Elias on the other hand…is not afraid to show his psycho. He is Crazy with a capital C. After his father basically raised him to kill, what else was he suppose to do? Dexter can act normal, usually, but when the wrong thing is said or done, he’s outraged & murderous in a heart beat. This man has absolutely no problem killing anyone for any reason, but with Megan it’s either them together or neither of them.
🔥 Dexter & Megan are the perfect match for each other. Their chemistry was palpable. Dexter initially was just using her for his own personal gain, but then he became addicted and obsessed with her & she to him. They definitely went down a rocky & windy path to get to their HEA.
🔥 After reading the majority of this book and experiencing the dark twists & turns, I started to think their wasn’t even going to be a HEA, but Shandi pulled it through after completely ripping my heart out with Chapter 30 (by the way: you will need a box of tissues 😭😭). I loved getting a deep dive into each of their psyches. They are both psycho but in different ways and from different experiences. I loved getting to understand how their minds worked, what made them tick and what made them drawn to each other. I loved that in the end they were just happy expressing their “normal” selves.
🔥 Just a little extra note that made me scream with excitement 😉: my book husband made a guest appearance - iykyk 💕💕
🔥 “Remember that you are dust, and to the dust, you shall return.”
My ratings: Star Rating = 4 (I really liked it and will recommend it) Heat Level = Hot (Unabashedly & deliciously smexy, spicy, dirty, or kinky)
Wow, this was a fantastic book! There were definitely parts that made me uncomfortable but the dynamic between Dexter and Claudia (no spoilers) was enthralling. I couldn't put this book down once I got into it.
They are each so broken from their tormented upbringing, but their jagged pieces fit each other and their story was told so well that you can't help but slip into their minds. The author told their story well.
If you like dark romance, this is a winner. If you have triggers be sure to check CW's before you dig into this one.
My Rating Scales:
Stars: 5 ⭐️: A favorite, highly recommend & will definitely re-read 4 ⭐️: I loved it & will recommend it 3 ⭐️: I liked it & might recommend it 2 ⭐️: Meh, I didn't love it & probably wouldn't recommend 1 ⭐️: Not for me, wouldn't recommend
Heat Level: 0 WTF did I just read?: Uncategorized, because WTF did I just read? 1 Warm: Sweet ‘greeting-card company’ level romance kind of book. 2 Hot: Unabashedly & deliciously smexy, spicy, dirty, or kinky kind of book. 3 Scorching: Find a private spot to read this because you might need some ‘me time’ at some point, kind of book.
This is an unconventional story and vastly different than what I am used to from this author. I am a huge fan of this author and have read about everything that she has written. She has never been one to shy away from violence or darker subjects. So, imagine my surprise when I read this blurb knowing that it was going to go down a different path than this author normally depicts.
This is not a normal love story. In fact, there is not anything really "normal" about it, and therein lies the complexity that is this story. Being that I am familiar with the side characters that fuel Dexter and Megan on their journey, I shouldn't have had any empathy for these two. However, this author is so skilled that she made me feel for them, even when I didn't want to feel that way. These two are screwed up, seriously not all is right with these two. Yet, after the horrors that they experienced, I would be more concerned had they been.
I had forgotten some of the details of the interconnected stories so it was nice to put all the pieces together at the end when the surprise confrontation/cameos came together. The epilogue was a nice surprise and made everything fall into place, as well as adding another perspective of events, in regards to several series. Was it my favorite from this author? No, but that didn't mean that it was still not a good book. It kept me invested from page one until the very last page.
What another epic story about love. A twisted distorted love!! But none the less love. These two had such a …. Gah!!!!! I want to say some things but I don’t want to spoil the intrigue!! What I can say, is they both went through things that was so unfair and unjust. They meet in a hospital for the insane but are surrounded by deviants. They eventually are drawn together. I would have never thought that they could have found a connection the way they did. Nothing was going to stand in their way. It’s so strange to think 🤔 when you know their back stories, that they’d be perfect for each other. And that right there is why Shandi’s stories draw you in!!! She manages to take you to places in her stories you’d never think you’d go. Even weirder you are rooting for this couple. And the best bit is, it works. It creates a page turner that has you reading to the wee hours of the morning and then rereading the bits, your half asleep brain needed to refer back too.
I've never read a psychological romance before so at first I was just curious to see what I would get myself into by reading one... "The Misfits" came just at the right time! Shandi Boyes has the ability to make you plunge into the mind of psychotic people! (I know that to normal people it may not sound right...but I love to discover the way they reason) She makes you understand the minds of Dexter and Megan, and this is really amazing!
Needless to add that I fell in love with Dexter right away!
This is a dark romance so I understand it's not for everyone, before deciding to read it or not I suggest you to look carefully at the trigger warnings.
If you are as twisted as I am to like troubled characters and villains "The Misfits" will be your right choice!
These two are a prefect match made in hell. Both crazy deranged psychopaths. Both have a horrific childhood full of abuse.
If you expecting a book about hearts and flowers, then this book is not for you. If you want a thrilling dark ride, then this book is perfect.
I would recommend reading the Bound series for more of a backstory on Dexter prior to Misfits.
Shandi takes us on a wild ride of two psychos plot for revenge. Both have been locked in mental hospitals for years.
This is a dark read, beware of triggers
Style: Dark psychological Thriller Story: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Enjoyment: 5/5 Dark Level: 4/5 Sexual Level: 🔥🔥🥵🔥 Triggers: Yes Violence: yes Pacing: medium-fast Series: standalone within a series Cliffhanger: No Dual POV
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book
I went into this novel blind. I knew it was a dark read, but I really didn’t know what to expect. Both of our main characters have some type of psychosis. At times Dexter appears to be able to function as a normal person, then the voices start interjecting thoughts. Meghan definitely isn’t on the same level as Dexter, but she is his perfect match in every way! At times I felt like there was too much going on within the story. Luckily as different things developed, Shandi reminded us of the circumstances leading to the scene we are immersed within. I was definitely guessing what was going to happen all the way to the end!
The Misfits is one crazy journey of two very unbalanced characters Dexter and Megan. The storyline was intense their actions definitely matched the expectations of these two.
Both have suffered many past traumatic experiences, that have shaped them into the multiple physcotic behaviours.
Dark twisted obsessions lead both into kaos madness and a calmness that's when they really come to best way to get revenge. Two broken people with a crazy journey for a kind of peace.
The story was so well written for the craziness of our two main characters. It was crazy and all over the place and at times I had to re read things but that fit what was going on in the characters heads at the time which made it much more real. The steam factor was pretty low and I wish that was more passionate. But it was a good book for two psychos falling in love. When ur rooting for the bad guys you know the author did a good job.
DNF this book. Got to 49% and the female lead still hadn’t said a single word. Wouldn’t classify this as a romance really it’s a pretty f’d up and toxic relationship & rather disturbing for my taste - the lead and his father ‘hunt’ women and have a rather upsetting view of women in general. I’d say pass on this one.
This was quite the interesting read! I enjoyed watching how their relationship went from wanting to get back to their exes to them having a kid and playing happy family at the end.
I love them together!
