A really solid adaptation of the film. I like how Verheiden expanded the story a bit and fixed the ending to fit in with Evil Dead 2. I really enjoyed the narration from Ash as well. Verheiden captured his voice perfectly.

John Bolton captures the manic horror of the first Evil Dead film to perfection. It brought me right back to just how unnerving that first film was.

Who doesn't like The Evil Dead? Exactly, not one person. And who knew there was a comic adaptation of the first movie? Exactly, not one person.

Mark Verheiden wrote one in the early 90s, including some extra bits that in the movie more or less happened offscreen. And reading this reprint, it is very well done, has the tone of the movie down pretty much perfectly.

The art is good too, leaning towards the photo-realistic, not afraid of showing gore.

A lot of fun.

I have really mixed feelings about the art style in this graphic novel because it isn't always aesthetically pleasing in my opinion, but something about it works so well for the Deadites. This entire adaptation felt wonderfully authentic to the film, and the author nailed Ash's narrative voice and slang. It was a nice mixture of scenes pulled directly from the film along with extended "scenes" that gave us a little more insight into Ash's thought processes, what happened to Scotty, and more. I definitely recommend it for anyone who loves the films!

I don’t read comic books often, but when I do, they’re adaptations of my favourite movies.

The original Evil Dead film is quintessential for any horror fan. Thankfully, this adaptation manages to be more than just a straight retelling.

It expends on character moments that didn’t exist in the original movie, like what happened to Scotty when he was outside the cabin, what was the friendship group like prior to the trip and whats with the continuity error between movies 1 and 2?

We also get a glimpse inside Ash’s thoughts in the movie through a narration present in the comic. It 100% reads like Ash Williams, his voice has been captured perfectly.

The artwork does a lot of heavy lifting, somehow managing to stay true to the movies look while also being unique and perfectly gruesome all itself.

Anyway, I could talk for hours about Evil Dead and I’ve probably already put too much thought into it’s comic adaptation. Hope this is what has broken me out of my reading drought though.

“You’d like to think, in these situations, that you’d find the strength to do the right thing. Then another bookcase falls on your head, and suddenly all your heroic plans go to pieces.”
-Ash

4.5 stars. Wow, what an awesome graphic novel adaptation of the first Evil Dead movie! It has way more humor than the film, primarily because you’re able to hear Ash’s thoughts about what’s going on. They’re genuinely hilarious, and sound a lot like the Ash from Evil Dead II aka the best entry in the trilogy. Overall, this is kind of a perfect blend of shit you’re already familiar with from the movie and all these great little additions that truly ADD to the story, details that enhance what was already a pretty damn memorable viewing experience. There’s plenty of nice juicy gore too, as you’d expect. Highly recommended for fans of the film(s)!

I'm biased, evil dead fan, reading this through with greedy little eyes, i had the cult actor Bruce Campbell reciting the lines of Ash, great moody art work that relishes the feel of the first movie...just in a comic book form.

Very fun, plus they flesh it out a little, they make it not just a cash-in comic book tie, yet not enough to change the story or alienate people, well balanced.

A great adaptation of one of the best horror films ever! Mark Verheiden does a great job and adds just enough new material to keep things fresh. John Bolton's art is wonderful as usual, gore galore. Verheiden also cleverly come sup with a way to reconcile the continuity troubles between Evil Dead and Evil Dead II. This is a must for fans of the film.

I was definitely hoping for more from this. It was basically exactly the movie but shorter (and so doesn't include everything) and just looked like still shots from the movie. I'm not sure exactly what I was expecting but I was let down. Although I think that's more of a my problem then the book's problem.

While this is basically a retelling of the events of the movie, there's enough to make this enjoyable. The energy of the original series is captured and I'm happier for it.

An adaptation of the first Evil Dead movie with 3 or 4 added scenes and some new narration by Ash which kind of explains things a bit, adds a bit more context. I'm not sure I loved the added stuff, but it's not enough to take away from the story.

I usually love John Bolton's artwork, but it felt a bit bland here.

WARNING! - Extreme gore and violence.

After seeing this in one of my local bookshops, I knew I had to get it. This is follows the original movie very closely but expands on characters back stories and events that weren't fully delved into.

It still follows Ash, Linda and his friends, going to a cabin in the middle of the woods. All they want to do is hang out, drink some beer and get closer to their girlfriends. But some demons from another dimension, have other ideas. Driven to torture, kill and drive these teenagers crazy.

If your a fan of the orginal movie, your pretty much getting a slightly shortened version but with some expanded scenes. Don't go into this thinking it will be a masterpiece, because it isn't. What it is, is a fun gory time, in the Evil Dead Universe. Also Ash has both of his hands, so no chainsaw hand in this collection. Would love to get two more, focusing on the other movies.

Classic awesome 80s horror movie captured in illustration goodness. Yes fucking please! Any Ash is a good day. The cabin where legend said a geezer went nuts. Once Ash plays the tape, his ass is grass. The incantations now resurrecting the demons lurking in the woods. The infamous vine scene. They do go there. Bridge fucked. No escape. The claustrophobic feeling of isolation permeates. A pencil stabbed in the Achilles heel. I even felt that and grabbed my leg. Ash, please hide the pencils. I don't want to see more. Fingers ripping in the face, hand cut off at the wrist, a geyser of blood spurting, a head flying through the air from a shovel. This mixture of horror and humor works perfectly. What a ride.

Actually, a good adaptation of the movie, thanks to John Bolton's grisly and oddly compelling artwork, which looks like a collection of distorted, garishly colored movie stills. Some will find it off-putting, but for me it was a perfect fit.

Fairly good adaptation to the film but definitely a loss in graphic novel form. Illustration were pretty good. And the story was almost exactly like the movie except Cheryl was just Linda's roomate and not Ash's sister, an odd diversion from the original story.

I love the entire Evil Dead franchise and this is a pretty neat and accurate little adaptation of the first film. You won’t find much here that’s not also present in the film series other than the plot of the first movie being narrated by the persona Ash developed in the second movie. Still it’s a really good time. My favorite thing was the art. It’s very surreal at times and reminds me of a creepy comic I read as a kid. The title of which eludes me but even seeing the art drummed up some forgotten nostalgic dread from my youth. Long story short: it’s not groundbreaking. It’s the Evil Dead beat for beat with some incredible and gory art but why would you read this expecting or wanting anything else?

It's the Evil Dead, but with some changes from the original story. Some of them add little character beats, but some of them are just head-scratching. The ending of the book is going to make some people roll their eyes, but it kind of works in the context of tying the original film to Evil Dead 2: Dead By Dawn.

Short and Sweet with some of the best artwork I've ever seen in any graphic novel so far. I'm still pretty brand new to these. But I do think this captures the classic film in novel form. The Evil Dead has always been one of my favorite horror movies of all time. So yeah I loved this. Hail to the King, Baby!!

I think this is a fun retelling if the movie while adding a little context. My only complaint is that Ash is narrating as more of an Army of Darkness Ash and not an earlier version.

Great stuff! A worthy read that gifts us a couple of extra elements to the story of the original Evil Dead movie, showing us how the young’uns met up before the fateful trip to the cabin, why they were going there and a little backstory of how they met, along with an addition to what happened to Scotty when he tried to run away.

The artwork is great! There’s points where it looks like the artist has lifted a snapshot from the original movie and painted over it to call his own, but the deadites look great and the whole thing looks just like the movie. Excellent all round!

I loved the Evil Dead movies and the TV show Ash vs. The Evil Dead and expected to like this adaptation but the artwork was sketchy at best and it just did not do it for me. Worth the read if you are a fan but overall not the purchase.

I am a huge fan of this franchise with the ‘81 classic being one of my favorite horror films of all time. When I heard about this graphic novel I was intrigued and excited to see how it adapted the film and what changes it made in the transfer from screen to comic. Sadly I was disappointed by the out come.

There is a great Alan Moore quote in which he acknowledges the similarities between film and comics but goes on to point out that if a comic isn’t able to do something unique in its medium it’s doomed to be just a film that doesn’t move. This comic is perhaps a perfect example of that.

This is simply a stripping down of the film and nothing more. Most of the dialogue is the same (except when the chatting had to be cut down to keep the page count reasonable) and most of the panels are just sketches of shots from the film itself. This leaves me simply wishing I was watching the film and instead of reading it. Much of Raimi’s film language comes from long takes in which the camera whizzes around trees, under stairs, and through the house. Movement is how he tells a story, a movie in the most literal sense. Raimis use of visuals does not lend itself to static images. This is why it was so imperative for the author and artist to find their own way to tell this story but sadly they chose to just copy Raimi. Nowhere is this failure more clear then in their husk of an attempt to duplicate the films iconic last shot through still images.

The choice for so much of this to be just sketches of the film is disappointing because when the art is totally original it’s great! It still looks like evil dead but now with a life and texture perfect for comics. The panel showing demon Cheryl in the basement surrounded by other demon forms is perfect! I wanted to see more of that. But sadly we are given time and time again stills ripped from the film and simply painted to look like a comic.

The author also brags about the changes they make to flesh out the characters and “fill in the blanks” which… I didn’t really see any of that. Yes there are a few new scene but they are very short and offer little in terms of character growth (we see the boys pick up the girls, and later Ash having sex in the car…. How insightful)

They make extensive use of narration here as Ash recounts the events of the first film. This isn’t inherently bad expect for the fact that the narrator is written like the cocky chainsaw wielding Ash we’d come to love in the sequel but the Ash we see is the timid, love struck dope of the first film. Narrator Ash cracking wise and making light of the death while Comic Ash is literally catatonic with fear is such a clash that it feel like two separate characters all together. If I didn’t know what Ash was like in later films I would never believe that the guy living this event was the same guy narrating it.

Overall just a disappointment. If you’re an Evil Dead fan like me it’s an interesting enough find and there is truly some good art work in here, but it’s so similar to the film that a single reading for curiosities sake will do. I know that Ash can be handled well in comics (there are other Ash comic stories that are very popular) so it’s sad to see a retelling of the original classic be so… well ….dead.

Verheiden finds a clever way to deal with the chronology problems between The Evil Dead and its sequel, and the broader question of why Ash seems like a different character in each film. His answer: Ash has always been a charming but foolish and self-absorbed fellow, he was just less cocky at first.

Verheiden also writes a backstory that helps to explain the bigger question, "why are these five people on a trip together? They don't have much camaraderie, two of them are allegedly siblings but barely acknowledge each other... so why are they on a weekend trip into the backwoods?" Verheiden handles this question by ignoring the idea Cheryl and Ash are siblings (here, she's just a friend of the other two girls along for the ride). He also indicates that Scott isn't really a friend, just someone who's clung to Ash since they met in grade school... which Ash will tolerate since Scott found a cheap cabin where the couples can get some alone time. So, a collection of frenemies who hang together for convenience or comfort, who have shown hints of aggression in the past, which rise to the surface during this terrible weekend.

Throughout this story that expands and compromises on the Evil Dead in interesting ways, John Bolton's artwork finds that perfect line between imitating the movie's look and creating a distinct style.

The Evil Dead is a film I remember dearly from my childhood, along with the trippy sequel, Ash Vs The Evil Dead. This adaptation is mostly true to the original film. Right down to it’s grainy and overshot artwork.
However, for me, there was one major difference. I can’t remember Ash being such an intolerable moron in the film. By putting it all in his words the writers have made a previously noble and likeable character a completely different beast. One I did not enjoy.

Sadly I’ll say upfront I wasn’t a huge fan of the artwork. It didn’t work for me personally and cost this rating a star. The adaption was great and I liked the additions to the overall story that filled in super fan questions.

A fantastic comic adaptation, adding detail around the edges of the original film and supplemented by some genuinely chunky, disturbing artwork. Highly recommended, especially in such a nice hardcover format.

I am a huge fan of the Evil Dead movie series, but this was an abomination. The artwork is absolutely atrocious, and characters from the movie other than Ash are replaced with Gap models straight out of the 2000s (literally).
