A sequel! A sequel! Are you kidding me! (Or as my son used to say when he was three – are you tipping me?!) Look, as a devoted Pyper fan, and having devoured almost everything he’s released/written (I still have three short stories or so to read), I’ve longed for a continuation of some of his characters, as I know other fans have. Who wouldn’t want to see what Ullman is up to these days? Or what happened after the ending of ‘The Killing Circle’?

Oracle 2: The Dreamland Murders gives us just that. I will say – this review will be spoiler free, but an interview I’m doing with Andrew won’t be – so you can read this review just fine, BUT, saying that, you definitely need to check out Oracle first before entering into this follow up.

This one was an interesting and very different experience than Oracle. Oracle also happened to be my first Audiobook experience, so going into that, I wasn’t sure what to expect, but Joshua Jackson delivered a fantastic performance as both the Narrator, but also bringing our main character, Nate Russo to life.

Now, Jackson is back, but this time, it’s no longer a singular narrated audiobook, but a full on audio production, with an ensemble cast, complete with music and sound. For me, I’d described it as watching a movie with your eyes closed.

This follows the events of Oracle, picking up with Nate being bailed from jail to join Clare and Tillman again. This time, they need his ‘special assistance’ after a strange killing occurs near an old abandoned amusement park in Becket, Massachusetts.

What I liked: While Oracle was a single Audiobook told with a single Narrator, Oracle 2 arrives with ten episodes, with a full production. At first I found this change a bit jarring, but that was 100% down to me not being familiar with type of entertainment consumption. It went away really quickly and once again, the writing is so compelling that the characters immediately come alive.

The highlight I think for me, was the folklore that Pyper infuses into this story. A sprawling narrative that spans centuries and is revealed at first slowly, then in a really well done, dramatic information dump, where the cards are spread on the table and the reality of what they are dealing with is exposed.

I think one aspect of the episodic element that really worked well, was also the heightened secondary character development. Where in a novel, some of these characters may only have a few paragraphs or appear in a chapter, we get to see them come and go throughout, which also elevated the ‘small-town’ feeling where you often bump into the same people multiple times a day.

Dreamland itself is a fantastic aspect and as it comes alive the most during the finale, the production side of things really worked to give the listener that atmospheric creepiness that was necessary.

I will say – our friend the Boneman returns, albeit in a slightly different iteration and this works well to see the subtle ways Nate Russo has grown and changed since the events in Oracle.

I’ll finish this section off by saying – both Clare and Tillman feel more like important characters this time around than secondary pieces to push Russo’s plot. The voice actors really did these characters justice (as did all of the voice actors throughout) and it makes for some really entertaining and dramatic moments.

What I didn’t like: One part that I thought would’ve been played out a bit longer than it did was a particular love interest/moment that Nate has. It is with a specific character who plays a larger role in the overall events and lead up in the town, but was far too brief for me. They have a connection, absolutely, but this listener would’ve loved to see how Nate would’ve responded given more time.

Why you should buy this: It’s a unique thing – having a writing voice as solid and identifiable as Andrew’s that even when performed by others, his way of forming a sentence is immediately familiar and comforting. When compared to Oracle, I’d suggest Oracle 2 stands out more, not so much because of the full cast or the production put into it, but more for the depth of storytelling and level of folklore put into this. It has a wholly realized concept and the beginning, middle and ending work well together to cohesively tell us the story that realizes the concept. It is really well done and shows why Nate Russo is one of Pyper’s most complex, and most human, characters that he’s created yet.

Kudos to Audible, the performers and Andrew for this one. Here’s hoping this isn’t the last we see (or hear) of Russo and crew!

Oracle 2 The Dreamland Murders
By Andrew Pyper
I love books that have paranormal, psychic, etc. in it. This has it all. Great characters, plot, mysteries, and the paranormal/psychic abilities. Really enjoyed it. Enjoyed book 1 also. Now, the hard part of waiting for #3.

Second Audible Original with this author/main character and I LOVE THEM. They are like an old timey radio program with a full cast and sound effects. Completely drew me into the story and hooked me from the beginning. I hope Audible continues these releases.

How fun was this?? Full cast production broken down into 10 episodes. It was like listening to a TV show!! Joshua Jackson and cast rocked it.
Which there was a more solid ending and overall plot but still pretty good!

The production was better than the first, but then it got a wee bit too supernatural . . . and maybe I accidentally jumped a few minutes toward the end b/c WTF happened? I would have given it 3 stars up until about 80%-in and then it crashed for me.

This is the second "made for audio" production of the Oracle series. I really enjoyed the first one and was looking forward to this latest entry. The format is different from the original book as it is now in a podcast format with Episodes instead of chapters. While that was different, it is not hard to get used to it and settle in to the story.

The story starts off nicely as we see Nate being lured back to his FBI team when an odd occurrence happens in a small town. Apparently, he ran from everything after the last case and was surviving by reading people in a carnival and drinking himself to sleep every day and night. I found it weird that the male FBI agent (Tillman?) was so rude and mean to Nate as it felt like they had made great strides towards each other at the end of the last case - weird?

Anyway, the case is interesting. There is a whole lot of supernatural in this case and it involves the entire town. Where it lost me was near the end. It - to me - just went WAY over the top into craziness. I like the supernatural as much as anyone and that wasn't the problem. The problem was that it felt like the story didn't know where to go to consider it settled.

Without going into spoilers, I found the ending extremely...well...lacking. I honestly said, "that's it?" and was super surprised with the way the story was supposedly resolved.

And, can I just say - separating in a haunted park...seriously????

I was not sure about this "podcast" format with a full cast at first, but I quickly loved it.

I don't do horror, but this book is amazing. Like... it has me re-evaluating horror altogether, even if Audible billed it to me as a psychological thriller - which I do usually enjoy - and the main reason I picked up the first one was it was 1) free with membership and 2) had Joshua Jackson. How can you go wrong with that?

That answer, so far, is you can't.

So, as long as you can handle it. Read it.

P.S. Usually I don't do horror because it gives me sleeping nightmares. This book gave me waking ones. Weird things happened, and I was convinced it was because I was listening to this and the first book in the series.

I'm sure this will wear off quickly. Right?

I enjoyed this one by Andrew Pyper, but not as much as the first. This one felt like the conclusion was rushed and I wanted the story and history to be fleshed out a bit more. The performances were great, there was only one lady (the B&B owner) who felt a little over the top and not believable but the rest were amazing! Overall a great listen.

Verdict: Another great story & performance - I could listen to Joshua Jackson all day. Changing the format to a podcast was an interesting choice.

I enjoyed this supernatural mystery as much as the first one - maybe a bit more because our trio of main characters is starting to appreciate each other.

This made for audible audiobook was a sequel to Oracle. This time it was a multi cast narration. I thought the multicast narration and spooky background effects really enhanced the story . Once again we follow FBI psychic Nate Russo and colleagues to help solve another potential serial killer mystery with a paranormal background. 8 hours in podcast episode format.

This was just as fun as the first Oracle! It has a bit of a different format; more like a podcast with a few shorter episodes but in the end it felt the same as the original. It is also a multi-narrator cast, including a cackling, shrieking witch! Thankfully Joshua Jackson returns as Nate Russo. He is essential in my opinion. I enjoy all the main characters so it was great to delve into their stories a little more. Fingers crossed for Oracle 3!

While not a book per se, but more of a modern radio play (read: episodic podcast), Oracle 2 was fabulously entertaining. Joshua Jackson returns as the melancholic and burdened Nick Russo--a "seer" of sorts who is consistently haunted by a figure called the "Boneman". He works as a consultant with two FBI agents: Claire Hernandez (played well by Humberly González) and Agent Tillman (a most excellent performance by Devon Bostick, redeemed from his poor character in The 100--not his fault, mind you). The series picks up threads from the first book, so I would definitely recommend reading/listening to Oracle first.

The repartée between Russo and Tillman provides a humorous and even endearing character development that was not so apparent in the first book. Agent Hernandez fades into the background at times, but Oracle 2 focuses on building the relationship between these three characters which added unexpected depth to the story.

When I heard the preview, I thought I would find the added foley and soundtrack distracting, but it is actually rather effective (save for a few clichéd "bum-bum-BUM!!!!" moments). It was like watching a movie with one's eyes closed, which I really liked, as outside of Russo (who I can't help as see as Joshua Jackson), I had formed images of the characters in my mind already. Bostick's voice does not really match up with his appearance in my mind, so "my" Tillman looks different.

Without giving too many spoilers, the Boneman is still here (originally voiced by Jackson in the first audiobook, here I'm not certain...), but he takes a backseat to a new evil. I felt Pyper underexplored this connection and the role of the Boneman a bit, but appreciated the twist. Russo's monologues grew tiresome on occasion, and as a character he seemed to degrade a bit from the first book. A climactic scene in the House of Mirrors was very good except for a brief and unnecessary moment of "in case you didn't get it" explanatory nonsense regarding the evil figure who is central to the story. There's a new love interest (of sorts) for Russo, but as with the first book, this is very understated and at most results in a one-night stand.

The supernatural element is kicked up several notches here, but Pyper is sure to give us enough character development to keep us guessing about who is trustworthy and who is not. And while abandoned amusement parks are de facto creeptastic settings, Pyper keeps the clichés to a minimum (no scary clowns--coulrophobes rejoice!) and the story is a nod to the witch hunts of history and small-town networks.

This audiobook felt more like a radio play than a straightforward audiobook, but I am not going to complain about that. I guess the first book was successful enough that Audible/Amazon decided to up the ante when it came to production values, with multiple voice actors and a whole bunch of sound effects and music. I'm not sure that it added anything crucial to the story itself (I don't require bells and whistles from my audiobooks, just a talented narrator), but I think it's noteworthy enough to mention.

This book was much shorter than the first (about two-thirds the length), which in my experience is rather rare. Usually sequels or subsequent instalments tend to get bulkier rather than the opposite. This had a rather good effect on the storytelling, making for a tighter narrative, but also at the expense of character building for our main three characters. I thought there was a lot more potential to delve into the fallout from the first book than what the author gave us in the end. We got a few glimpses into Nate's worsening alcoholism and Claire's possible PTSD and trouble with the reappearance of her son's biological father, and even Greg Tillman got a nod toward becoming slightly more three-dimensional, but it felt to me that the author rather fell down on the job there.

Pyper has a real gift for horror writing, and that's definitely his greatest strength. I have some qualms about the "woman in grey/red" who is a Overall, though, it felt like a pretty good variation on a common horror trope, and the story certainly kept me engaged right up until the very end.

I highly recommend Oracle 1, 2 & 3. All 3 books were a delight to listen to. Not delightful in that cozy romance way, but delightful in the way of truly great storytelling.

It’s sad that the author, Andrew Pyper, has died of cancer. I love these characters and would happily listen to another 20 books in this series.

Joshua Jackson (Mighty Ducks, Dawson’s Creek, Fringe) is the main narrator of all 3 books, and he’s fabulous.

Andrew Pyper, Craig Davidson, and Joshua Jackson together created the kinds of characters that are so compelling that you want to hear of their adventures over and over again.

Trigger Warning: These books (I’m combining all 3 audiobooks TW’s) have so many triggers, probably too many to list, but I’ll do my best: Death, murder, suicide, ritual sacrifice, bad drug trips, strange entities, physically grotesque ghost, unexplained events.

I found these books to be: Compelling, Psychological Suspense, Thrillers, Urban Fantasy

If you enjoy books, characters, authors and movies like those below - then these 3 audiobooks are 100% worth your time:
M. Night Shyamalan (Signs, The Village, The Happening, Glass)
Dean Koontz (Odd Thomas, Watchers, Phantoms, False Memory, and the Jane Hawk series)
Stephen King (Dreamcatcher, Fairy Tale, Carrie, Firestarter)
Kate Daniels books by Ilona Andrews
V.E. Schwab (A Darker Shade of Magic, The Invisible Life of Addie Larue)
The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel series by Michael Scott

Overall, I think these 3 audiobooks are Huge Gems and very underrated. I think all 3 deserve a lot of acclaim and attention. Please listen - I’m glad I did!

So, once again because Joshua Jackson and some new narrators brought this next installment to life, I had to listen to it! Nate, Claire, and Greg (Ferndez and Tillman respectively) are back! As it stands, I still don't like Tillman! After the previous case his attitude just got even worse in my opinion. This story tries to explain why, but it did no good in my opinion. He is still an arrogant ass. My opinion of him was solidified when he and Claire had it out. I really dislike guys like that. I went on a huge rant in my notes about my dislike for Tillman, not going to lie! My heart went out to Claire as she tried to heal from her ordeal in the previous installment. I enjoyed her character very much. The banter between her and Nate made me keep listening. Even though I dislike Tillman, he had one of the best lines when he said, "not even god can help you Nate". I'll admit even though the case they were working on was strange, people dying in odd ways and old lore surrounding the place called Dreamland, it was still interesting. I feel like this installment had a better and more in-depth storyline and premise than the first one. It had more of a fantasy and paranormal feel to it. I, oddly enough, would listen at night while drifting to sleep. No, this is not usually the type of story someone falls asleep to, and I don't know why I found it relaxing. It certainly was NOT boring! As much as I really like and relate to Nate, I questioned a few of his decisions in this book especially when it came to the "town witch", but I'll leave it there. I feel bad for her daughter Penny though! Listening to the bond between Penny and Nate become stronger made my heart smile. It is always good to have someone who will listen to you and vis versa. I really think Nate would have been a good big brother/father figure to her. I hope we find out more about her life in the next installment (if there is one) even if it is just in passing. I would definitely recommend this audiobook to most adult readers who enjoy fantasy/paranormal/thriller type books, and it doesn't hurt that Joshua Jackson reads as Nate. :) (I'll never NOT make that a selling point. If you read it, I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

Nate Russo is an Oracle used by the FBI for "special" cases. While trying to recover from his last case which forced him to face his own ghosts, both real and figurative. This time the case takes him to Massachusetts where there has been a murder that appears to have ritualistic elements to it. As the team begins investigating, they hear rumors of a witch who lives in the woods. As Nate speaks to this "witch", he discovers that she is attempting to keep the town safe from the spirit that wishes to harm them. In this little New England town, there is a literal fight between good and evil - the question is…will Nate be able to help them?

Joshua Jackson is perfect as Nate Russo. His deadpan sarcasm is always on point and easily done. Devon Bostic and Humberly Gonzalez do wonderful jobs at playing the FBI team that Nate works with. When you put the three of them together, you can a wonderfully engaging story.

I loved the first Oracle and found the story and ending completely satisfying. I cannot say the same for the follow up. While I enjoyed the reintroduction of the FBI agents and the new elements of magic that were introduced…what I didn't like was the sudden anticlimactic ending. I hoped for more of a fight with the witch as opposed to what actually happened. With that in mind, I am still looking forward to any new cases Nate and the team go on.

I didn't enjoy it as much as the first. I don't know if it's because it was written for Audible or if it's just because it was different. It just seemed a bit too gimmicky and didn't have much storyline behind it.

It was more of a short story mystery that you would find on an episode of ghost hunters or something like that.

But any excuse to listen to Joshua Jackson and I'm there

Fantastic! Chef's kiss. Another exciting dramatization featuring the talented Joshua Jackson. I can't wait for Oracle #3 to come out in June.

The story moved fast and never lagged in it's story telling. The voice actors did a stellar job bringing the story to life in my head. It was like a little movie going off in my head and giving me that X-Files vibe. Totally up Joshua Jackson's alley as I he was great in the TV show Fringe that also had that X-Files vibe. All drama, supernatural, subterfuge and action.

I started the story in my car driving into work and instead of stopping once in the office I instead continue to listen while I worked. It was like when you get such a good book that you stay up way past your bedtime because the thought of stopping just can't be done.

If you like suspense, paranormal, fast pace storytelling, and vivid storytelling without unnecessary filler descriptions of things like how dresser in a room looked but rather more a description of a scene with room for one's imagination to fill in the gaps as needed.... then this is the story for you.

I need more of such audio performances and storytelling. Makes for wonderful entertainment.

Hear me out: This audiobook-only is self aware and a love letter to older readers (like me) who have seen it all in plots. They know they can wow us with originality -- cuz we've seen everything -- so Andrew Pyper makes up for it by trying his best to distract us with red herrings and false leads. This may be annoying to some, but I found it extremely entertaining. I knew nothing about this author nor these books, but simply picked this up to listen because Joshua Jackson gives me extreme 1990s nostalgia. I loved the story (and his voice) so much that I listened to all three books in the Oracle series back-to-back.

This book is different than Oracle 1 and 3 because it features a cast of voices for the different roles. I enjoyed it.

As an old Gen Xer that loves horror, I thoroughly enjoyed the book and, even, got a few goosebumps along the way.

Should you read this?
If you're a horror fan in general, YES.
If you don't like horror but want to see what all the fuss is about without too much gore, YES.
If you're a book snob who expects tight storytelling, NO.
If you liked the character roles that Joshua Jackson filled and want to hear his voice, YES.

Nate is back! And as drunken as ever! After what happened back in his hometown, Nate, dives deep to the bottom of the bottle of whatever has alcohol in it, ending up in jail as consequence, and, in order to get out, he accepts another FBI assignment; this time in Massachusetts, near an old abandoned amusement park called “Dreamland”, where something more sinister and dangerous tries to rise from under the earth, even the Bone-man is scared of the thing! By the way, the bone-man doesn’t make too many appearances in this part. In this sequence, Nate gets to meet a beautiful woman, manages to patch things up with Clare and Tillman, almost gets fired, again, and almost gets killed.

This sequel includes more actors, not just Joshua Jackson, which enriched the whole representation, love the narrative and special effects. The story went into a deeper role depiction, making the other characters more palpable and interactive. The performance was great and so was the story, fast paced, entertaining, and fun.

The first audio book, Oracle was great. Oracle 2 was a disappointment. Andrew Joshua’s narration & role as Nate were once again great & the general story until the end was good but everything else was either uneven or poorly done. The main problem was that this was presented like a radio play & not as a story being read by Joshua. Greg’s voice didn’t seem right & it’s too bad Joshua didn’t do the Boneman’s voice again. In the Oracle it was a very sinister scary voice. In Oracle 2 another actor does the Boneman & it almost sounds cartoon-ish. And the biggest disappointment was the ending. It seemed rushed, confusing, not very suspenseful & frankly anti-climatic for a evil spirit/witch/supernatural story.
If there’s an Oracle 3 I hope it returns back to a story format. Drop the radio play/podcast style.

two stars: This is more of an audio drama than a book but imagine the worst episode of that slocky "spooky" procedural show that you catch on a rerun channel at 2 in the afternoon and that's what this is.

This feels like the straightest white guy nonsense I've ever read. The script feels like it was written by someone with zero experience in writing plays (which is basically what an audio drama is). Half of the returning characters have their backgrounds changed and they really suffer for it. The only worthwhile performance is Joshua Jackson and TBH he's getting by only because of my love of Pacey Witter.

I'd be mad if I paid for it but it's currently free on audible. I will be listening to the third in hopes that because only Joshua Jackson is reading it, it will be more like the first one.
