Book Two of The Chimera’s Apprentice Series continues with The Stone Traveller. Will Kyra stop Majellan once and for all?
Kyra Murch struggles to adjust to life with her parents on Antiica and to the difficult task of controlling the chimera. As the humans and Raturro move closer to war, Mercy learns that rebel leader Majellan is after her; she is no longer safe in Deep Nestling.
Kyra takes her to the Armory, but Mercy’s not safe there either. Reunited with Coyne, the three friends seek out a distant nestling, Deep Wending, and hope the unusual Raturro they encounter there will allow Mercy refuge. After a run-in with huge serpents, the trio embark on a difficult journey to save one of their new friends but instead insult the Raturro by breaking an important tradition.
Kyra and her friends must attempt to outwit Majellan before he closes in on them and forces Kyra to make a terrible choice: avert a war or save herself and her friends.
In the tradition of C.S. Lewis’ Chronicles of Narnia, Philip Pullman’s The Golden Compass, and Rick Riordan’s Percy Jackson series, The Chimera’s Apprentice transports the reader to a magical world of adventure.

The adventures continue in book two. More secrets are exposed as Kyra is caught between two worlds. Like book one, this is action-packed. As Kyra tries to help and save Mercy she must travel to a place that is lost in myths, far away and where danger lurks. The protagonist is a strong female lead who is caught in a war she cannot understand nor does she want, nor it seems can she prevent. As the tension grows, the ending takes us to new heights and sets book three up nicely. This is a lovely told series. It’s a great story for Middle-grade and YA readers. The heroine and her friends are likeable, and the bad ones are sufficiently dislikable. I will wait for the next instalment which I am sure will be as well written and exciting as this and the first.
I received an early copy of this book for review. All opinions are my own. I really enjoyed this second installment of Kyra's adventures in Antiica. There was even more intrigue and action than in the first book in this series. The relationship between humans and Raturro was explored more deeply and Kyra continues to be a sympathetic character as she debates her role in a world her family helped conquer. The book ends with an exciting twist and I'm looking forward to reading the conclusion to the series when it is released.
This book kept me reading until the end. The characters kept me engaged and the story took me to another world. I am now wanting for the next one in the series to find out what happens.
Such a great follow up to the first Chimera’s Apprentice! Loved meeting so many new characters and exploring other Raturro tribes. It was left on such a cliffhanger, I can’t wait for book 3!!!
