Despite his youth, Declan Idrys knows of the evils of the world. He knows of the bastards and brigands who plague the King’s lands, of the monsters skulking in the wooded depths of the realm. Together with his companion, Ryn – a horse of rather peculiar talent – he has spent the last decade of his life beneath the bloody banners of a half-dozen mercenary guilds, hunting precisely such wickedness festering within the borders of Viridian.

Unfortunately, fate is quick to pull on the leash of its favorite children. When one particularly troubling contract goes sideways, Declan and Ryn find themselves thrust into a war thought legend and long-ended, a conflict so old it is synonymous with a time in which dragons still ruled the western skies. Now, as dead men rise from their graves and the terrible beasts of the northern ranges descend into the kingdom with an appetite for savagery and flesh, Declan is faced with a profane choice. He can turn, can flee an ancient rising horror that would see the realms of man left as shattered death and wind-blown ash.

Or, Declan can face this mounting threat, can come to terms with the fact that his oldest friend might just be more than he appears, and learn to wield an ageless power all his own.

Centuries pass, after all, and the Blood of Kings does not fade…

Amazing book cover, I came into this book having read Bryce O'Connor's previous books and enjoying them. I've never read any of Luke's books on the other hand, but between the cover and the joint effort put into the book I was excited to read it. Sadly, the book didn't live up to the hype that I had created for myself before reading it.

This book is slow and is 90% traveling with small battles thrown in between destinations to make it seem like something is happening. While I'm not against tropes in books, this book had A LOT of them, the entire story and world feels like every other traditional sword and sorcery book I've ever read. The backstory of the world is handled as a mystery to the MC, with other characters doling out info dumps every so often to fill in his gaps. I'm not sure if the authors thought some of the story was considered plot twists or not but it's all very straight forward and easy to guess whats happening.

Even though the action scenes felt like they were thrown in just to add SOMETHING happening in the book, they were enjoyable with the exception of a few problems. The magic system is pretty loosely made and never fully explained, I can definitely see it leading to some good fights later on in the series though.

The characters weren't terrible but I also never felt any connection with them as a reader. There isn't really any growth in them throughout the entire book. They all operate on a very base level, I never felt like they showed any personality or traits that made me want to become attached to them.

Even though I wasn't a major fan of this book I'll be checking out the rest of the series when it releases. I do feel like there is potential between the magic and setting to create some good moments. I would only recommend this book to people who love traditional sword and sorcery and don't mind tropes. If you come into it knowing what to expect and find yourself in the mood for it then you'll probably enjoy this book.

Note:

I don't think I will follow up on this series. Despite interesting characters & setting, the story failed to capture my interest & hold it for more than a few minutes at a time. I had to re-listen to half of the book. A lot of info about the characters, setting, background & etc was laid out but it was done in a awkward manner. It's too bad. Loads of potential but nothing stood out strong enough to pull me into reading the next book.

I was familiar with both of these authors and was interested when I saw the audiobook for this was performed by Nick Podehl who is one of my favorite narrators.

I got what I wanted from this – a really fun high fantasy story. It started off a bit slower, there was a medium length prologue that introduced the world and laid the foundation for the main character’s backstory. After that, it was largely set up for the first quarter of the book with things really kicking off around 25-30% as the world building kind of exploded and the plot taking shape. After spending the better part of his life fighting with mercenaries and taking on random jobs while roaming the country side… he stumbles into the undead…. The undead are thought to be a thing of legends… magic has been outlawed for generations and the time of dragons and evil queens has been gone for centuries. It seems that myths and legends are taking hold of the world again and Declan has to decide whether he’s going to be the kind of hero his fore fathers were.

I liked Declan as a character, I do feel he was kind of a generic ‘good guy’, but honestly at this point in my life that’s what I wanted to read about. When things are really shitty I don’t want to read about bad guys, or even really dark grey characters. I want good guys I can root for and just sink myself into a story about a decent person fighting high odds and winning. That said, there were a number of last minute saves that became too frequent. Declan becomes more powerful as the book goes on, and he’s also very much so a destiny lead character. He has a hidden family background that reveals itself as the story unfolds, and he fits the mold of “character who doesn’t know how powerful he could be”.

I really love non human characters, and although he wasn’t a POV, Ryn’s character was probably my favorite. A shapeshifting mentor and teacher that has been by Declan’s side since he was an infant. I’ve got a thing for mentor/apprentice relationships, especially when they’re healthy and not abusive. Ryn is able to be turn into things like a hawk and a horse – he has other forms as well but they’re fun to discover as you read. He’s super old and has seen some serious shit, which gives him a calm demeanor and cool head in most circumstances.

I love classic high fantasy stories with powerful mages living for a thousand years, elves and half elves roaming around, the undead, warren, ghouls, pyromancers, chimeras, wargs, healing magic, dragons, draghrs, necromancers, darks elves vs wood elves, ancient evils queens etc. It’s the kind of escapism I needed at the moment and it was easy for me to lose myself in the story.

I would recommend this to people who like classic fantasy stories with high stakes, lots of magic, and rooting for the good guy. The narration was fantastic as well, which is no surprise to anyone who knows Nick Podehl and enjoys his style.

The First book in what I hope is a lengthy saga, revolving around a young man named Declan, his strange companion, and their shadowed mutual history.

The book does a wonderful job of setting the stage for the series. It's a fast paced novel with a plot racing right along, while making sure the little things keep up with the action without leaving anything behind.

The characters are unique and memorable, good natured and honorable. Each with their own long histories, some hinted at, and some part of the main plot. The characters develop well through the book, leaving you with a decent idea of who they are. With plenty of development left for the future.

A Decent amount of mystery throughout has you almost tempted to skip ahead just to find out where its going. Some things are revealed, some are only hinted at. Overall, The book will leave you happily wanting more.

I cannot get into this thing. I thought that perhaps two mediocre authors would combine to create one good author. No such luck with this nap in book form. It turns out that two mediocre authors combine to create one doubly mediocre author.

A Mark of Kings is old school epic fantasy. I hate old school epic fantasy. The likes of Terry Goodkind and Robert Jordan make me sick and bored. This book follows in their trope-filled footsteps. Shallow characters, boring secrets, and quests to no where for no good reason are things I can get behind if there is something interesting or the story itself is going somewhere. In all fairness, I got about 2/3 of the way through this book before giving up so perhaps it turns around in the final 1/3. Maybe I'll find out someday... Just not today.

Skip it.

I really enjoyed this fast-moving fantasy-action adventure. With a well thought out and crafted world, interesting magic system and nicely fleshed out characters that were easy to buy into.
The book has a good pace that allows events to sink in whilst still keeping that page turning ‘what happens next!’ excitement we all want from a good fantasy book. The prologue sets up the story well and leads into a good introduction of the main characters and a brief set up of the world. The majority of the rest is action packed and unpredictable right up to the end of the book.

I was gutted to reach the end and can’t wait for the next book to find out more about this world, these characters and their story!

Highly recommended.

A Mark of Kings is a well written novel by Bryce and Luke. With all the quick novels popping up in the market, it is nice to see a well thought out, expertly written, epic tale that brings the readers in. Characters are properly developed while keeping the reader engaged.
Though I enjoy a quick novel as any other, this book is one you pick up to not only enjoy, but fully immerse yourself in the tale. I highly recommend this novel as well as any other by Luke and very much look forward to the next installment.

This is the best out of the lot - I love this series but every time I read the next book I get blown away. The thing is with this series is if you are a first time fantasy reader this is the one that will keep wanting more and more I been a fan of O'Connor- As part of the ARK I was mesmerised straight from the start. I would recommend this book any time.

Embrace this book and it will overwhelm you !

The sign of an excellent story is that you don't want it to finish. A Mark of Kings is that story

First, Nick Poehl is hands down one of my favorite narrators. As soon as I fired this up on audible I knew it was him. That said A Mark of Kings follows the main character Declan, who is basically a hired hand. Think about how the guild structure is set up in Fairy Tail. Declan’s travel companion Ryn, is a creature that uses mind-speak and shifts forms between a hawk, horse, and giant wolf.
What I like about this book is that you can just lose yourself in it. When the book begins, you find out about what happened to Declan’s father and his hometown. Not a spoiler, but it is destroyed and his father dies. It is here we also are introduced to Ryn. Chapter one is more like a prologue to me and Chapter two is more like the beginning. Bryce and Luke do a great job of allowing you to see this world through Declan’s eyes. As the past of his history was revealed, I could relate to every emotion and thought he felt and had. Mentally, he is overwhelmed at the discovery of who he is and what he can do. You also feel the hurt he experiences as he learns the truth about Ryn, even though he can understand.

Here is what I did not like about the book, the way it ended. Do not get me wrong, it is not like it was a bad ending. I just hate coming to the end of the book without realizing it and then being caught off guard only to hear “the end”. Realizing that I have to wait for the next book to know what happens next sucks when you do not know how long you have to wait, but it is a great feeling to know you have something you really like.

Seriously though, I do not have any real complaints with this novel. The action was great, the setup was on point, and the story was solid. Because I do not want to give away any spoilers, it is a little difficult to talk about the story. So what I will say is this, there is a magic system at play in the world and there is also a common enemy boss. That said, the beauty of this book is that you fill like you are one of Declan’s companions who is just as clueless as he is, and that is something I do not want to ruin for you.

This is most definitely a book that would make it on my bookshelf and one that I would highly recommend to anyone looking for a fantasy adventure.

Epic but surprisingly tropey.

This is definitely high fantasy. We've got dragons, elves, undead, magic and monsters. As is typical, our hero is an orphan/raised by a non parent at least partially. Of course, in addition to the tragic backstory our hero is not so secretly of ancient and powerful blood, blah blah blah.

The narrative flow is pretty good so I could normally forgive all that if we hadn't spent a huge portion of the early book having our main character stumble and stutter every time he is introduced to a new staple fantasy construct. It's the absolute worst kind of narrative tension.

The author tries to paper over it by describing the action from our clueless MC's perspective, but it just doesn't work. Zomg, the druid cast entangle. Did I need 10 pages describing the spell, plus our MC's total freak out over magic being real (again)?

Despite all that, the main arc is pretty fun. The different races are unique enough to make me wonder, and the details (if not the form) of the backstory are original. I'll probably give book 2 a shot whenever it comes out, but, I'm not going to pre-order.

Am immersive world with a solid story, wonderful character development, and a couple of great authors that know how to set a tone. There were a couple of issues I had with the book, but overall the pros definitely outweigh the cons. Cant wait for book 2 to come out cus that ending had me hitting that Darth Vader, "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!" LOL!! But its definitely one I highly recommend 👌🏾

I have never read/listened to anything from either author before this, but this cover is just eye candy 🥵 and I couldn’t resist not opening it. I also decided to back the Kickstarter for the Special Edition signed Hard back, which are also spicy, of this without reading it first. But now I have and it was a good read.

O’Connor and Chmilenko build a fascinating world where we follow Declan Idrys and his shape-shifting, telepathic (mind-speak) companion Ryn, a half-elf and a mage with tons of classic tropes in this single POV sword and sorcery, epic fantasy. I thought Nick Podehl did such a fantastic job narrating the story. The voices that he used were truly great, he got into every word, including the shouts and you could feel every emotion as if it was you, yourself in Declan’s boots.

“Most unfortunately, conviction can only hold at bay for so long the callous realities of the world.”

This is more or less a story about discovery through several info dumps of the history of Viridian and Declan’s familial history throughout the book with some exciting fight scenes sprinkled in, and when I say exciting, I mean EXCITING and gave a nice breather through the information learned during travels. It does have a somewhat basic magic system, nothing really crazy or unique, but that does not take away from it. At times, I did find myself sidetracked. Not out of boredom, but just from so much information being dropped at once in between battles.

The final 25% of the book was much better than the first 75%, the final 10% raised the bar even higher. I feel like some of the backstory could’ve been in book 2 rather than it all being in this one. But with how much was given, I expect book 2 (A Blood of Kings) to be a lot more action packed.

Do not sleep on this book!

A mark of Kings, a book I bought purely and simply because of the cover, look at it, just look at it, pure awesomeness. Before I even read this, I spotted the Kickstarter campaign for the special edition and immediately backed this.

Yes, I judged a book by its cover and so glad I did.

This is the first book I have ever read by these authors, so I didn’t have any expectations or pre-comprehension, an open mind is how I travelled on this voyage.

A Mark of Kings is a thick Tome which I love (who doesn't love a thick juicy steak/veggie/vegan alternative to get your teeth into) only when the mountain of pages remains relevant and adds to the story. This book is full of the history of our main character Declan and explanations of, well everything. You can sometimes get lost in the explanations of these but to be brutally honest you grow to love it. You just want to know more. We travel a lot through this book and the descriptions are plenty. However, on the travels, there are a lot of fight scenes, and these are written beautifully. You may think you're getting bored of the pages where there is a history lesson or description of the lay of the land, pretty much where not a lot happens and then BAM! Fight Scene.

The world building is great, the characters are awesome even the side characters seem alive in the pages. This story may seem like any other fantasy out there but please do not let this put you off and there are subtle yet delicious differences.

I have such high hopes for this series. I live in hope that the second book is less of the descriptions and more of the action, just to counter the history we have received. The Special Edition hardback will forever remain in pride of place on my bookshelf (when it finally arrives).

This book has such an epic-ness feel to it all-round, that I would recommend this to all.

This book is by one of my favorite authors from the Ascend Online series (Luke Chmilenko) and another author that is new to me but I plan to read more of (Bryce O’Connor). The other books I’ve read by Luke are LitRPG but this is more of a straight-up fantasy book. The story starts in recognizable ground for fantasy novels and then slowly unveils its story with a twist on familiar tropes.

Once it gets rolling I didn’t want to stop reading it. There are several action packed scenes that left me worried for some of the characters. I’m not comparing this book to The Lord of the Rings but there were many times while I was reading it that I got a LOTR feel. However, I think this book is much more digestible.

If you enjoy Luke’s other books I think you’ll like this one too. This is a book that simultaneously manages to feel at some points, lighthearted and at others very dark. In short, my kind of book. Since nothing is prefect I will point out my one criticism is that the book is definitely intended to be part of a series and as such doesn’t feel like the most contained story. I would’ve personally liked a more of a conclusion on this story.

Bottom-line: Good book. Go read.

A Mark of Kings by Bryce O'Connor and Luke Chmilenko
It was with some excitement and a sense on anticipation that I set out to read ‘A Mark of Kings’, the latest offering from Bryce O’Conner and Luke Chmilenko.
Having previously read Bryce’s previous work in Books 1-4 of the Wings of War series, I thought I knew what to expect…I was wrong.
We start our story following Declan Idrys and his unusual stallion as they travel the country taking contracts to keep themselves fed and clothed. Their most recent contract leads them deep into an adventure of epic proportions. From epic, mythical battles, to centuries of history, with a smattering of magic thrown in for good measure.
This book did not disappoint, and there is definitely scope for a sequel, which I hope will be forthcoming.

Oh yeah, Bryce O’Connor and Luke Chmilenko hit the sweet spot with A Mark of Kings. A very well written, exciting story. The plot, world building and character creation all come together nicely and at a pace where you have time to absorb it. You don’t have to work at remembering a huge list of characters or places within the first 50 pages. Having said that, unlike some fantasy books where the beginning chapters can be slow while the story, world and characters develop, A Mark of Kings brings no-holds-barred, in-your-face, gritty combat and violence, early and often. I totally dug this book and you will too. In addition to A Mark of Kings, I have read Bryce’s 4 book, Wings of War series and could not put them down. I have been reading sword and sorcerer fantasy for 45 years starting with Robert E. Howard, L Sprague de Camp and Lin Carter with their Conan stories. While Bryce and Luke may not quite be on the level with those great fantasy authors yet, they can throw a rock and bust em in the piehole from where they are now and they're coming on fast. Keep the books coming fellas.

This is a great story of a young mercenary who runs into a war that started with family he never knew about, when all the races got along, and magic was widespread throughout the human kingdom. Now, with magic banned, evil loose and getting worse, he has chosen to go and help save the world.
This might sound like most every other book out there, but trust me when I say that it is not. The story is so vivid you live it with the characters rather than just watching from the sidelines. The main characters don't get to simply skip their way through this this turmoil because they have a trump card for every possibility. They suffer, both physically and emotionally, because of choices that some felt were unavoidable.
Don't just pass by this book, it's a great story you won't want to regret not reading.

Disclaimer:
To be clear and honest. I received a free copy of this book beforehand so I could deliver comments and a day one review.
I want to be clear and honest with that so that you have a chance to disregard my review if you feel that this isn't ok.
I will try to keep this spoiler free.

Now, I read a lot. Whenever i can and mostly (almost exclusively) Sci-fi and fantasy. I have been largely withdrawing from the fantasy
genre for a number of reasons. To many POV characters to name one, my RAM simply cant handle that anymore. This book has one main POV and handles
other POV characters in a fashion I can handle (so you probably can to).
This book did grip me, though. I like the pacing of the book. It starts off hard, gripping you, to then slow down letting you get to know the characters and world while building pressure.
I would also greatly recommend Ascend Online.

A Mark of Kings is more than a little reminiscent of Eragon. It's about a young man, his a dragon, a girl and an older mentor (that of course knows magic). For me, that's not a bad thing at all. I'm all for Eragon and his adventures. In A Mark of Kings there's almost no other characters other than our main quartet and the plot is very straightforward. It basically boils down to "hurry up and get here".

I do have a few complaints. I would like the stakes to be higher. The story very much reads as a first act and the pacing at times reminded me too much of a bygone era of old school fantasy. Get on with the main conflict already! Last but not least I don't like the fact that the story basically ends mid sentence. I need some sort of climax even if the sequel is out already. I would like to read more but I'm not blown away. Iron Prince this is not. 3.5/5

A Mark of Kings by Luke Chmilenko and Bryce O’Connor is a great debut into the fantasy book genre. The prologue pulls you in from the beginning and by the fourth chapter I was so attached to the characters I did not want to stop reading. This novel is, what a call, a fantasy journey novel. Most of the book follows the main characters as they move through the world and encounter different obstacles, some are easy to dispatch while others are extremely difficult! The visuals from the descriptions in the book are enticing and the book played like a movie in my head as I read. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who likes fantasy books, especially if you’re a fan of dragons and elves!

Declan Idrys was a sellsword--and a good one. But when he and Ryn, his mysterious shape-shifting companion, take on a job investigating a series of odd disappearances, they get more than they ever bargained for. Thus begins a story of adventure, heroism, and loss for Declan, Ryn, the half-elf Ester, and her father, as they embark on a journey of self-discovery while facing down the greatest threat the world has ever known. Bryce O'Connor has created an immersive world, with compelling characters. Full disclosure--the book sets itself up for a sequel, but leaves me invested enough in the fate of the characters to want to read more. Go ahead--step into Bryce's world. But buckle your seatbelt--you're in for a wild ride!

A Mark of Kings is a must read for traditional fantasy fans

A Mark of Kings is set in a new realm by Bryce O’conner partnered with Luke Chmilenko, the new lands vary from the setting of The Wings of War, but are still lovingly crafted and wonderful to read through. The story will lead you through thousands of years of history, beautiful cities, and wondrous wildlands. I greatly enjoyed the new story and getting to know the new characters. Would absolutely recommend this title to you and any fantasy reader in your life. Really looking forward to future entries in these authors and where they might go.

Excellent read in a great series
Once again, a long, in-depth novel with many twists and turns. The author's strengths are in world building and character development with at times poetic descriptions (that I go back to re-read and appreciate). Having read the first four books months ago, it took me a while to understand the time frame of this installment; it's the kind of series I'd like to go back and read again when all the books are done. This one ends in a cliff-hanger so hopefully the next will appear soon.

A good fantasy tale woven into a good fantasy world, with characters who seem real, and though there may be a little too much explanation and not as much action, I did enjoy reading this! Not quite a four star, there are so many books that not every one can be classed in the top few % for me, but this is a 3 1/2 for sure, and I will look out for the next tale, as this ends on a cliff hanger 'lord of the rings-style' as opposed to many fantasy, which have an ending all their own.
A good book, and worth the read x
