Konstantin

I grew up bleeding to survive, so getting paid to play the game of hockey is a life richer than I ever dreamed possible. I’ve got it all, or so I thought until meeting Lucy Cain. My teammate’s sexy sister is a ray of sunshine in my otherwise gray world. Though fighting on the ice is second nature to me, in Lucy I’ve discovered something I’ve never had before—someone worth fighting for. But will she still want me when she sees the beast inside?

Lucy

I’m leaving my life behind. As soon as I get my brother back on his feet, I’ll start over in a little seaside town to escape the dark secret I discovered about my ex. My plan hits a roadblock, though—a six-foot, inked up Russian one. My brother’s teammate Konstantin is more likely to throw a punch than crack a smile, but once I slip beneath his stoic, steely façade, I never want to let him go. As my past closes in, though, Kon and I aren’t just fighting for our future, but for our lives.

I was all for it. It isn’t really instalove even though they waste no time and they develop feelings quite fast. There’s hockey, so I’m in. The side characters made it even better–hello, Mario and Luigi. But there was also a suspense element, and unfortunately, it was ruined for me right at the beginning. You’ll see it fast enough: the case of the disappearing phone. After that, I enjoyed the romance, but I didn’t get into the mystery. Details are important.

Sawyer was a side character in the previous book, with his own–painfully tragic–arc. We see more of him as we follow his sister. She’s here to help him, but mostly because she’s running away from her boyfriend. We’ll learn why way later in the story. But she’s clearly in danger. And despite that, she still makes stupid decisions.

To be fair, it’s a collective work. She keeps her story to herself, which leads to people not being too protective of her–besides Kon–and focusing on her brother’s drama while she regularly escapes death. Well, almost. They’re rich, they aren’t stupid, yet they basically do nothing to keep her safe when they know something’s going on.

So let’s put the suspense aside and look at the characters. Lucy is a nice girl, she takes care of people. She’s mostly defined by her relationship with other characters. Her brother and Kon are at the center, of course, but she meets the whole team and spouses, and we also see her with the people at the bakery. She shows her appreciation with food, which is fine by me. It was kind of hard to imagine her at the job she had when she was with her boyfriend, though she shows some leadership at times.

Kon helps her with Sawyer from the moment they meet, and I liked that that was the way they connected. He sees how devoted she is to his best friend, and shows her his best side–he acts like he keeps to himself and he’s a brute, and the fact that he’s Russian doesn’t help, but he’s actually a nice guy. And he sure is ready to do anything to save his woman.

It was kind of a slowburn, and we don’t see a lot of their sexy times on page, but they were kind of hot. They also have cute little interactions, even in front of other people. I like their relationship in general.

Be it Lucy’s present, and the danger she’s in, Sawyer’s battle against grief and depression, or Kon’s terrible past, this story is rarely rainbow and sunshine. Though there’s no graphic depiction of anything, it is implied enough that it could be considered triggering. Be warned. This series never restrained from tough topics, and this book is no exception.

Quickie

- Series: St Louis Mavericks #4 (can be read as a standalone)
- Hashtags: #hockey romance #romantic suspense #brother’s best friend
- Triggers: some violence and threats, a lot of grief and drinking, mention of past violence, death and sexual abuse
- Main couple: Lucy Cain & Konstantin Volkov
- Hotness: 3/5
- Romance: 4/5
- + the Morelli bakery, just adorable
- – romantic suspenses need attention to details

5 star Review Hard Luck (St Louis Mavericks #4) by Brenda Rothert & Kat Mizera

Having read and loved the first two books in the series, I couldn’t wait to dive into Hard Luck, Konstantin (Kon) and Lucy’s story. From the first chapter I was drawn into the story that Brenda Rothert and Kat Mizera wove. The authors write well together, their characters are engaging, often flawed and easy to relate too.

Hard Luck was well written, entertaining and extremely emotional with a storyline that will keep you invested and had me moved to tears. I fell hard and fast for Kon and Lucy, individually and as a couple.

I loved the development of their friendship and the progression of their relationship as they bonded to help Sawyer come to terms with his all consuming grief after the death of his wife.

I adored Kon, he is such a caring, protective man, not just of Lucy but of his teammates. I also loved how Lucy brought out the softer side of the serious Russian; it made me smile.

Can Kon and Lucy come to terms with their past, help Sawyer and find happiness together?

One click and find out.

4.5 out of 5

I've been in a real Brenda Rothert reading mood and with this book I'm adding Kat Mizera. This is the third book I've read by this pair and after the first two I was thinking I would love this book. And I do.

This is the love story between Konstantin, the goalie for the Colorado Coyotes and Lucy, sister of another team member, Sawyer, who is on bereavement leave after his wife passes. Lucy is in a whole lot of trouble. She's on the run from her ex boyfriend who is after her. We find out why later in the book. She's planning on staying with her brother while she makes plans to hide. She's expecting him to pick her up at the bus station but instead Konstantin or Kon, will be meeting her.

Right from the start I'm totally gone for Kon. He's from Russia and we've met him in previous books. He lived in abject poverty in Russia, often forced to bend laws in order to survive until he was 'discovered' for his goalie talents and emirates to the US to play for the St Louis Mavericks. He's had to learn English, which makes him speak in so adorable at times and he doesn't always understand the nuances. He comes across as vert stoic but we know from his POV that he's not at all. He's very loyal to his teammates, considers them his family and that includes their families. And this is why he's the one picking up Lucy. Sawyer is falling apart because of the loss of his wife and is in no condition to help protect Lucy and her stalker ex. Kon takes on this role. And the more he comes to know her, the deeper his feelings grow. At first the last thing he wants is any kind of relationship. He's been burned by his last relationship and now wants to keep things on a strictly impersonal basis. Being a professional hockey player there no shortage of women he can pick from but the closer he gets to Lucy, the more he begins to wish for more. Yes indeed, I do love me a certain Russian hockey player.

And I love Lucy as well. Despite everything she's going through herself, when she sees how bad Sawyer has become, the more determined she is to help her beloved brother come back to who he used to be before his wife died. And Kon is there to help. Once I started this book I could not put it down and read late into the night or rather early into the morning. These two authors write absolutely great together and I hope it becomes a regular thing between their own books. I'm impressed. And I'm just starting another book in the St Lois Mavericks series. I very strongly recommend them.

On the run from her criminal ex, Lucy Cain finds herself temporarily living with her brother, Sawyer, when she figures out her next steps. Except, she can’t leave town quite yet, because Sawyer is struggling after the death of his wife. When she enlists the help of his teammates to help bring him back from his spiraling behaviors, she also finds she may have another reason to stay in town if she could only find a way to escape the trouble following her.

Konstantin Volkov was living what he thought was his dream. Barely surviving the rough child and young adulthood he experienced in Russia, he has everything he thought he ever needed . . . that is until he meets Lucy. But, he’s worried not only about how he will protect her, but also of how she will feel about him once she learns about the things he’s done in his past to survive.

Lucy and Kon have no chance at a future until they can both stop running from their pasts, which unfortunately don’t want to let them go without the fight of their lives.

Every book in this series always leaves me with all the feels and Hard Luck is no exception! I’ve really come to love these characters, and Lucy and Kon make for another fabulous and interesting couple! I really adored them together and knew instantly that their pasts would collide. I just had that feeling that Kon would be the hero Lucy needed, I just wasn’t sure how it would play out . . . and, it was spectacular!

I also have to say that I really appreciated getting more of Sawyer’s story following Annie’s death in the prior book. The way the team rallied around him was emotional and really showcases how close these teammates are with one another.

So many emotions, lots of action, some laughs, some tears and plenty of sexy times, Hard Luck was a fantastic addition to the St. Louis Mavericks series. Kat Mizera and Brenda Rothert as a writing duo bring magic to the page! 4.5 stars!

There was a lot going on in this one. First, Lucy fleeing where she lived, not really sure why, but it must have been bad. She heads to her brother, Sawyer, who is a hot mess from his wife dying. These siblings had their hands full! Lucy seemed to keep her own problems quiet due to Sawyer. I was glad that she showed up and helped and pulled the guys from the team to help too, Sawyer really needed it. They kinda did an intervention with Sawyer and told him he needed to get his shit together, Lucy needed help and that seemed to due the trick, or at least started him on the path.

Lucy and Kon were very cute together and it was great that she could depend on him while sorting out Sawyer's mess. The closer these 2 got, the better things were until Kon's ex showed up. I thought that might cause more problems, but it didn't. Kon dealt with her in a good way and let Lucy know what was up. It also helped that by explaining their past, it helped Lucy see why Kon had to help her.

The drama at the end was so crazy! Lucy kept a level head and did what she could to help, but of course all the guys were there to help too!

The ending was great, Lucy and Kon planning their future, while being there and celebrating with their friends and teammates.

Lucy is trying to escape her past when the man she was living with didn’t turn out to be the man she thought he was. Her first step is to step some time with her brother Sawyer as not only will he protect her, but she doesn’t want to leave without knowing that he is alright as he is still trying to come to terms with a devastating loss. She wasn’t expecting to picked up from the bus stop by his fellow teammate or the feelings she would have for him.

Konstantin’s life is Russia was both difficult and dangerous so having the opportunity to play professional hockey in the US is a dream come true. When he meets Lucy he knows that she is a woman he could spend his life with but that means overcoming both of their pasts.

From their first meeting Lucy and Kon are drawn to each other in a way neither expected. They are both understanding and supportive of each other’s pasts as they fight for their future and the rest of team is by their sides every step of the way.

Each book in the Maverick’s Hockey series has been filled with emotion, these characters have bonded over several life changing events. The death is Sawyer’s wife, Annie, but in Hard Pass was gut wrenching for the team and devastating for Sawyer.

Now several months later, Sawyer is lost in his grief drinking and just barely functional. His sister, Lucy, had promised Annie she would look out for him, so she comes to St. Louis to help him back on his feet, but she’s also running from her ex-boyfriend and a dark secret she accidentally uncovered.

Konstantin, the Maverick’s Russian goalie, is worried about his teammate and close friend, Sawyer. He agreed to pickup Lucy from the bus stop and when bringing her to Sawyer’s home discovers how bad things have gotten and decides to be more involved in helping Sawyer.

While working together to shake Sawyer from his spiraling grief, Lucy and Konstantin grow close and discover a mutual attraction.

Lucy and Konstantin are both strong and steady characters who have big hearts and are protective of those they love. Each have some darkness in their past, and neither of them are really sure whether their involvement is going to be more than short-term.

I love how together these two authors wrote this storyline bringing together an emotionally intense plot about helping a loved one overcome deep grief, a romance between two characters who are a bit broken because of the darkness in their past and the warm and loving Maverick family.

This is a book that grabs your heart and attention from the beginning, delivers amazing characters who bring humor and friendship, and a strong and meaningful storyline.

I received a free ARC from the author and her PR team; and I am voluntarily leaving an unbiased review.

Even though they fall pretty quick I don’t think that it is a instalove romance it felt more of a slow burn romance type of book.

I loved this book a lot and enjoyed it as well. Criminal ex and hockey as well in the book. Loved it a lot!

Sawyer and Lucy, the characters are so well developed! I highly recommend this especially for any hockey romance lovers!

HARD LUCK ... emotional, intense & sexy

I'm loving the St Louis Maverick Hockey series from Brenda Rothert and Kat Mizera. HARD LUCK is the fourth book in the series, and like its predecessors is emotional, dramatic, sexy, and unputdownable. These two authors brilliantly combine to weave magic with their words and ensure that their characters' road to happiness is never easy, yet there is always comfort, support, words of wisdom, plenty of laughs, and a camaraderie that can't be broken.

Lucy Cain packed her bags and never looked back; she was running from a dangerous situation. When she arrives at her destination, she finds she has run from one dire situation to another, but one that is heartbreaking. She's temporarily moved in with her hockey playing brother Sawyer, who is grieving the death of his wife and has become a man she no longer recognizes. Konstantin 'Kon' Volkov plays goalie for the Mavericks and is the teammate and friend of Sawyer. He's also running from his past, one that has him believing that he is not good enough for any woman. Kon is living his dream, playing hockey professionally and living a life he never thought possible. He may come across as being cold, abrupt, and a loner, but deep inside he's tender, caring, and very protective of those he cares for. Meeting Lucy Cain changes everything for Kon.

The friendship between Lucy and Kon begins when Kon picks her up from the bus terminal as a favor for Sawyer. They are drawn to each other and unsure why. They begin to grow closer as they unite to help Sawyer through his grief, and it doesn't take long for them to realise they both want more. However, Lucy's situation and Kon's belief that his past makes him not good enough for her, have both doubting themselves. When the danger chasing Lucy heightens, Kon takes it upon himself to become her protector, and it's not long before their friendship begins to evolve. I adored Lucy and Kon, they were wonderful characters, both putting others before themselves, but needing that someone special in their own lives. Sparks definitely fly between them, and when the heat happens, they sizzle on the pages.

I can't describe how much I loved this story. It was deeply emotional, especially the storyline involving grief and how he coped. It was suspenseful as Lucy's past began to catch up with her. It was heartfelt as Kon finally reveals his past life in Russia. There were also many lighthearted moments involving the Mavericks teammates, these men don't have filters when they speak sometimes. What I love most is that they're not just teammates, they're a family, and family looks after each other. Friendships, family, understanding, grief, acceptance, and love, Brenda and Kat weave all these so beautifully throughout this emotionally intense story.

HARD LUCK is a story that kept me captivated from start to finish. Laughter and tears come freely, ensuring that it is a story that shouldn't be missed.

We are back in St. Louis with my favorite group of men and women in the romance hockey world. Goalie, Konstinine (Kon) Volkov has not had an easy life. But he has finally found a home in St. Louis and with the Mavericks. We met Kon when he was betrayed by his girlfriend and a teammate in the worst way. Of course, we didn’t get the full story. I have been so excited to meet this closed off Russian a little more, and friends he did not disappoint.
Lucy is fleeing a bad situation, and coming to help her brother, Sawyer after losing his wife. Her brother is worse off than she anticipated, and she was also not expecting Kon. Lucy is kind, smart, and a total people person. I love that about her. She makes friends wherever she goes. Kon & Lucy quickly form a friendship as they look out for Sawyer. But their feelings don’t stay platonic for long. They have some serious chemistry and the sexual tension is epic….I mean even the other players notice! When both of their pasts show up at the worst time, Kon shows his protective side, and shows not tells Lucy what she really means to him.
I wish I had words adequate enough to express just how much I adored this couple and their story. These two were absolutely meant to be together, and complement each other so well. Kon needs someone to love and nurture him, while Lucy needs someone to cherish her they each offer one another exactly what they need. Although this book is really about Kon & Lucy, I do love how much of a role Sawyer plays in this book and we get to see the gritty side of grief. We also get to see the Maverick family scoop Sawyer up and give him what he needs….even if he doesn't see it. Of course, we get to check in on our favorite Maverick couples, and meet more of the team. And there are plenty of light hearted shenanigans that hockey players are so well known for. Once again, Rothert and Mizera gave us an amazing couple and a book filled with all the feels! I can’t wait for more of this fabulous series!

It’s always a great read with these two authors and the Mavericks hockey team! In this story we get to know silent Konstantin Volkov, the Russian player who is quiet, not very social, but still a good friend. We’re also close and personal with Sawyer’s grief after losing his wife Anne.

When Lucy Cain, Sawyer’s sister, arrived in St. Louis to stay with Sawyer for some time, he didn’t go to pick her up from the bus station, he sent Kon to pick her up. Immediately, he was taken with this sweet woman, and then more when she invited him to a home-cooked meal. When they arrived, Sawyer’s personal state and the state of his house, drove her plans out of her mind. Her life for the first days was filled with her brother, his drunken constant state and the need to bring his house up to decent conditions. Kon, ever the quiet loyal friend, was there to give a helping hand and support to Lucy, feeling guilty that he hadn’t been more present to Sawyer’s grief.

And here we have a beautiful story, two new friends with a ton of chemistry they had to keep on hold while they fight the uphill battle to get Sawyer out of the depths of despair from which he didn’t want to emerge.

I loved Lucy’s quiet sweetness, her witty banter with Kon and how she brought out the sweetness out of that gentle giant. Even though his past was shrouded in darkness, he had light in his interior, he just needed the right woman to bring it out.

Lucy was running from a scary man and together Sawyer and Kon were working to help her out. There were scary parts, very sweet parts with the guys from the bakery, Luigi and Mario, and lots of support and friendship from the rest of the hockey team. Every time they called their friends, even for a naughty selfie, the response took minutes to arrive.

It was heart-warming, a little suspenseful, with steamy parts and emotional parts. A perfect read for one lazy Sunday!

When I say I can't get enough of this series, I really can't get enough of it. Kat Mizera and Brenda Rothert have written an amazing series with heart, emotion, lots of steam and great storylines. "Hard Luck" is an emotional, steamy and heartfelt story that pulled on my heart and didn't let go even at the end.

Lucy has moved to St. Louis to be with her brother, Sawyer, after his wife lost her battle with cancer.
She's also trying to get away from an ex who she did not part with on good terms. When Sawyer asks one of his teammates to pick her up, she meets Konstanin, AKA Kon. Kon is the star Russian goalie for the team. Kon has lived and worked for hockey since leaving Russia years ago. But as Lucy and Kon spend time together, a connection develops. And when Lucy's ex comes back to threaten her, he promises to protect her no matter what.

I just loved Lucy and Kon's story so much. I was pulled in immediately from Lucy's first chapter and her coming to St. Louis to help her brother with his grief over losing Annie. She's kind, caring and will do anything for someone that needs her help. And Kon, I need to find someone like him. He would move mountains to protect Lucy and was willing to sacrifice himself for her. So swoony. This story packs so much heart and emotion into the pages and has become an instant re-read for me. I loved how Kat and Brenda didn't shy away from the grief that Sawyer was going through. We got to read about all the sides of it and how with Lucy, Kon and the rest of the Mavericks, he was coming back to the land of the living. I cannot wait for the next book and will be counting down the days.

Off the charts chemistry, humor , angst witty banter , intrigue, twists and turns, heartbreaking , heartfelt, family , friendships, second chances , wonderfully written characters that are not only so likable and relatable but so unique and multi layered and last but certainly not least a storyline that is guaranteed to grab onto all your emotions and pull at your heartstrings in ways you definitely will not be expecting. A great read that has it all!

Hard Luck is the fourth book in the St. Louis Mavericks series by Kat Mizera and Brenda Rothert and it is a great addition to the series. There are so many twists and turns, it keeps you on the edge and anticipating what will come next. Also it does not shy away from some serious topics: dealing with grief that comes from the loss of a loved one; the hardships that one can endure in life and overcoming them; and even leaving a toxic relationship.
The two unlikely characters come together and realize that they need each other more than they ever thought they did. Konstantin has demons that cannot be forgotten and at times he feels he can’t escape from, while Lucy is running from perilous situation at the same time as she tries to help her brother deal with his own grief.
It was an intriguing and suspenseful novel, even more so than previous ones in the series and overall a great read. I also loved all the secondary characters that showed the importance of true friendship and being there for one another. I really hope that Sawyer’s story is told.
This is another fantastic collaboration from two really great authors for a series that that just keeps on getting better and better.

Lucy Cain is in St. Louis to make sure her brother, Sawyer, gets back on his feet while also fleeing her ex. Lucy is surprised when Sawyer sends his best friend, Konstatin, to pick her up at the airport. Kon is the goalie for the St. Louis Mavericks who used his fists to support himself and those he cared for in Russia before making it big in the NHL. Lucy and Kon are surprised at the condition Sawyer is in and vow to work together to help him heal. Kon and Lucy find their feelings grow until they give into their attraction. How will Sawyer react to Kon and Lucy's relationship? Will Lucy run again when her ex sends men after her? Can Kon and Sawyer save Lucy when her ex has her kidnapped? Can Kon convince Lucy to stay and give their love a shot? I loved Hard Luck by Brenda Rothert and Kat Mizera. Kon and Lucy are an amazing couple with combustible chemistry. Lucy is the light that breaks through the darkness that lives within Kon. Hard Luck has danger, chemistry, family, friends, and grief. I would highly recommend getting Hard Luck and the other books in the St. Louis Mavericks Hockey Romance series by Brenda Rothert and Kat Mizera. I recieved a ARC copy of this book, and I am voluntarily leaving my honest review.

What can you say about the collaboration of these two authors, you get one heck of a fantastic story, and Kon and Lucy's story, blew me away! 5 amazing hockey stars for this one!
Lucy's left her life behind her in a rush, and fled to her brothers house by bus. When she gets to town, his friend Kon is there to greet her. He's instantly attracted to her, and she him, but there is the bro code to stick to in the hockey world. When they get to Sawyer's house, they are both caught off guard by what they see, him passed out, the house smells of beer, and it's just a mess. She knew he was hurting from losing his wife to cancer, but she hadn't realized it was this bad. With Kon by her side and Sawyers teammates as well, they do what they can to bring him back to the land of the living, it's almost enough to keep Lucy's mind off what is going on in her own life, but when danger comes knocking, will she have the protection she needs to keep her safe?
This story had me hooked from the start! Hockey with mystery on the side was a perfect way to bring this couple together! Don't miss out on this one!

Konstantin has intrigued me since he first appeared in Hard Fall. He was going through issues with his girlfriend cheating on him with one of his teammates. I felt horrible for him so I was so glad we finally got his story. And this story? It did not disappoint. It's a teammate/good friends sister story. Kon fell for Lucy fast and he was willing to deal with whatever consequences came his way. Though when I found out his back story I didn't blame him. That man deserved a real happily-ever-after.

Lucy is Sawyer's sister. If you've read any of the previous two stories you know Sawyer's story. But that's not this book. Lucy is coming to help bring Sawyer back to the living but she's also running from her ex. Poor girl has a lot to deal with both in front and behind her. But by coming to her brother she develops a great support system.

I adored these two and I'm glad they didn't let anyone stand in their way. Though they have an obstacle or two to deal with their love perseveres. I love how protective Kon is and I love Lucy's backbone. I couldn't have asked for a better story for these two.

*I voluntarily read an advanced copy of this book for my honest and unbiased review*

This was the emotional story of Konstantin and Lucy, who are Sawyer's teammate and sister. After Lucy discovers that her ex is into illegal activity, she flees to visit her brother Sawyer in St Louis. But when Sawyer sends his teammate Kon to pick up Lucy, she realizes that Sawyer is not coping following the death of his wife from cancer and is basically comatose from alcohol every day. As Kon and Lucy's friendship continues to deepen, their feelings start to develop into something more. But someone is after Lucy and with Sawyer too drunk to protect her, Konstantin feels he needs to be there for her, to be her protector. And Lucy is only too happy to have the tall, Russian with the tattoos and abs of steel keep her safe. Konstantin's upbringing in Russia was tough, he did things he was not proud of, and he worries that this will make Lucy realize that he is not good enough for her!
This book is well written, the characters come to life and make you feel as if you are on this roller coaster ride with them. It is full of heart, emotion, with the right amount of love from the Mavericks family.

Brenda Rothert & Kat Mizera are on a winning streak with HARD LUCK (St. Louis Mavericks Hockey #4). Lucy Cain flees Spokane Washington to escape her ex-boyfriend. She stops in St. Louis to visit her brother Sawyer, who recently lost his wife Annie to cancer. She befriends his teammate goalie Konstantin (Kon) Volkov, who helps her with her brother. However, danger follows Lucy, and Kon becomes very protective of her.

HARD LUCK is an amazing story. The plot is interesting, and it is full of action Kon is from Russia. He had a difficult childhood. His ex cheated on him with a teammate. Lucy discovered her ex wasn’t who she thought, and he is after her. Top that off with Sawyer spiraling over his wife’s death. There is a lot going on. The novel was heartfelt and emotional.

HARD LUCK is an excellent addition to the St. Louis Mavericks Hockey series. I like how characters from the previous book were integrated throughout this book. It was skillfully written and believable. I am looking forward to the next book in the series, HARD HIT. I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book.

Broken by the past.
I loved how many levels of emotion this book touches. From the friendship to relationship of Lucy & Kon, to the love, support, loyalty, and family of the entire Mavericks team.
Lucy's brother, Sawyer, is still a mess after the death of his wife a few months ago (we were introduced to Sawyer & Annie in book 2, Hard Limit). Lucy may be the only one who can save him, plus it may also save her own life as she is on the run from her crazy ex.
Kon, Sawyer's stoic Russian teammate, is asked to help Lucy get settled unknowingly creating the foundation for their close connection.
While struggling to dig her brother out of the sinking hole he's in, Kon and Lucy form a special bond that may be threatened by the demons in each of their closets.
This was so great. I may have teared up a few times but it was worth it to see
them rise out of their darkness.
The Rothert/Mizera writing team is amazing and is a collaboration I hope to see much more of! This whole series has been fantastic!!

Lucy is running from Spokane to hide out with her brother in St. Louis. Sawyer has been an emotional mess since losing his wife to cancer and Lucy plans to step in and see how she can help. Sawyers constant drinking prevents him from picking his sister up at the bus station and he sends friend, Konstantin instead. The sparks might have been small, but they were there immediately with these two.
Soon Kon is a a frequent visitor and a huge help in getting Sawyer to stop drinking and start living his life. This proximity only fuels the flames of his fire for Lucy.
There is a lot of drama that comes with Lucy and the story takes a scary turn when her former boyfriend tracks her down. Lucky for her, Sawyer is back and together with Kon and the Mavericks, Lucy is saved. Happy ending? Not so fast! These events play an number with Kon’s head and he is reluctant to keep moving forward with Lucy. She has other ideas and soon she is able to help Kon see in himself the kind protector she has come to love.
Loving the Mavericks and can’t wait to see what is in store for the other guys, Boone and Rory?! And I would LOVE to see Sawyer find love again!!

St. Louis Mavericks Hockey

Lucy Cain broke up with her boyfriend and needed to get out of town quickly so she's going to stay with her brother Sawyer. But instead of Sawyer picking her up he sends his teammate Kon the goalie for his team. Sawyer's wife Annie had died from Cancer and he had spiraled down so when Lucy walked into his condo she was shocked at the condition it was in as well as her brother. Kon has offered to help his teammate and is there for Lucy as well. Kon quickly falls for Lucy even though it's his teammate's sister and he knows he should stay away. He has a past that isn't good and he feels that he's not good enough for her. Lucy is running from her ex and doesn't plan to stick around just long enough to help Sawyer get back on his feet. But when danger comes to Lucy, Kon is there for her and they grow closer. But can he keep her safe and will she stay?
An emotional story that has you rooting for something good for all involved.

I loved this book! There was love, sports, and suspense in one book. I didn’t like that Lucy’s boyfriend was so bad that she had to leave where she lived to go live with her brother. I was sure glad though that she came to help Sawyer since he had turned to drinking trying to get over his wife Annie dying of cancer. The bonus was finding Kon who was one of the Mavericks. Kon had had a terrible childhood growing up in Siberia. I can’t imagine living in fear of someone who is trying to find me and may kill me. Lucy was a good person who made friends easily. Sawyer’s close friends on the team were there to help Lucy get him straightened out. It was both heartwarming and heartbreaking watching Lucy and Kon fall in love with each with all their baggage. There are some scenes that had me on the edge of my seat to see what was going to happen. I strongly encourage you to read the book. I was given a copy and voluntarily wrote a review.

I received a complimentary early release copy of this e-book from the author prior to release and am voluntarily leaving a review.

This is book 3 in the series and if you have been reading the series, in this book Annie has died and her hockey playing husband, Sawyer is VERY broken. His sister Lucy comes to time to check up on him while at the same time on the run from her evil ex, Nate.

Sawyer is a mess and that's me being kind, so he asks his Russian teammate, Kon for help picking her up at the airport. Lucy and Kon both love and care for Sawyer and this book centers on them and the team trying to help Sawyer before he destroys himself. In addition, Lucy is terrified of her ex and Kon helps her deal with that as well.

This is a very serious book. It deals with death, Cancer, alcohol abuse, death, prostitution, and learning to survive after a tragedy. It was a beautifully told story and a total tearjerker.

Easy to fall for and highly addictive! With the fourth book in Brenda Rothert and Kat Mizera's St. Louis Mavericks hockey series we are getting to know Konstantin and Lucy, but even more important, we are getting to dive back into life with Lucy's brother Sawyer after his loss of Annie. I enjoyed every minute of this story and always look forward to more to come in the series. Great characters, emotional turmoil and lots of sexy goodness.

Lucy is a sweetheart who was in the wrong place at the wrong time with the wrong guy and now she's hiding out and trying to help her brother Sawyer pick up the pieces of his life after the loss of his wife.

Kon is gruff and sexy as all get out and is just a downright sweetheart when it comes to Lucy. I enjoyed their development very much.

I highly recommend this book as well as the rest of the series to anyone that enjoys a close knit hockey family who is always there to love and support each other through life's ups and downs.

Hard Luck by Brenda Rothert
I love me a good hockey romance. This right here ladies and gentlemen is a good hockey romance. This is Kon and Lucy’s journey. I am not going to say much in the way of explaining what this book is about because that would be unfair of me to give anything away. All I will say it that this book can’t be missed you need to read this book. My heart literally broke for Kon he had this vulnerability about him. The way the author made us see him as this this tuff hockey player yet he needed someone like Lucy. He needed someone to love him to show him he is loved and nurture him. Lucy needs some one to show her just how amazing she is just how cherished she is how perfect they are together and how they complete each other. My heart bled for Sawyer we got to see just how deep in his grief he was in this book and how much pain he was in. I loved this book and I can’t recommend it enough. I look forward to what ever is next in the series and for this author.

Konstantin's life in Russia was not what dreams are made of. Playing hockey in the states made all the difference in his life but he feels like he can't really shake his past. Lucy, Kon's teammate Sawyer's sister is running from a dangerous ex. Her plan is to check on Swayer after he lost his wife and then disappear. When Sawyer sends Kon to pick Lucy up at the bus station, the attraction is instant. But with her running from her present and him running from his past, can they have a future? Add to that the fact that she is Sawyer's sister, can it work?

I loved how protective Kon was of Lucy before they were even a thing. The way they were a team in trying to help Sawyer was a beautiful thing. It was also great the way that the other teammates rallied around as they tried to help both Sawyer and Lucy was also wonderful. I was so happy to see more of the other characters in the series show up.

I’m loving this series and Lucy and Kon’s story doesn’t disappoint.

Lucy gets herself into a slight pickle and when she leaves her old life behind she heads to see her brother before disappearing — but instead of her brother picking her up he sends his best friend Kon and both of them are shocked at Sawyer’s condition when he drops her off.

Both are shocked at the depth of despair shown by Sawyer and together decide to help him overcome his grief. While working together helping Sawyer they become friends and more and when Lucy’s past catches up with her Kon becomes the person he was always afraid lived in him — and how can Lucy convince him he’s exactly what she needs and wants?

The emotions in this book run the gamut — from sadness, despair and fear of the unknown to sexy, sweet, love and caring! And of course we get to see old friends and make new ones too! I can’t wait to see where the next adventure takes me.

Lucy has fled Washington to St Louis to escape from her ex who wants to hurt her for the secrets that she knows about him. Upon arrival she is picked up at the bus station by her brother's teammate, Konstinin, because he is drowning himself in alcohol over the loss of his wife to cancer. She decides to temporarily stay there to help him find his way back from his deep depression, having given up on hockey and living life in general.

Kon, has a his own secrets he hoped to have left back in Russia, but the nasty breakup between his ex and a former team member that she left Kon for, is something he can't hide forever.

The two find solace with each other and things have to get darker before they can see the light of a future together.

I was hoping for a bit more of Kon's past to come storming in from Russia but it was more the guilt of his past deeds that haunt Kon and mess with his hope for a future with Lucy. Oh well.
