I'm actually kind of torn on how I want to rate this book. First of all, I did not realize that it was over 1100 pages when I started it (that is my fault and I take complete responsibility for that). My first hint should have been the fact that the audio book was almost 36 hours long, but when I was looking for the next book to start, I didn't even look at the summary or the details of the book. I remembered that I had liked what I had read of the series so far - both The Aldoran Chronicles and the Aramoor series - so I was interested in continuing onward.
Unfortunately, it had been a pretty long time since I had actually read any of the books in the series (not to mention that there have been hundreds of books read in between) and it actually took me quite a while to remember and understand the actual details of all that was occurring and why. This is a series that has a LOT of characters. And, not only that, but there are several storylines going on at the same time. To me, it was confusing as heck and for that reason, it took me much longer than I would have liked to get back into the story.
Then, part of me began to get anxious with how long the book was and how much longer I had before it was finished. I began watching the time left and pages remaining. To me, that is never a good sign. I have absolutely no problem reading large books. In fact, many in this genre tend to be large books. Yet, I just couldn't seem to settle into any type of rhythm. Just the fact that it took me several days to finish is a sign to me that there was something "missing". By that, I just mean that the magic that occurs when you lose yourself in a book and time begins to fly - that you look up and realize that the book ended and you had no idea how that happened - that was not happening. Why? Well, a couple of things. The pacing was uneven, it seemed sporadic at times, sometimes we are bogged down in the minutia of details that just felt like "filler" and then at other times the action was exciting and non stop. On top of that, the storylines seemed like they were a bit all over the place and I had ABSOLUTELY no earthly idea if and/or how they were all going to mesh together..
There is the storyline of Ty and his quest. There is Aryion and his loss of memories. We have only a couple of chapters with Valtor interspersed at odd times (and THAT I thought was a pretty BIG part of this overall story arc - with the events of the new and crazy King), and then there is Ferrin and his gang as they have escaped the White Tower and are being hunted all over the country by some pretty powerful bad people (The Black Watch, Silas, etc)
But, with all that being said, by the last 25% of the book, things began to gel and the action began to ramp up and things got interesting. That is also about the time that I realized that there was no way that everything was going to be resolved in this book and that there was going to have to be another book following this one. I think my biggest problem with this latest book that even with over 1100 pages, we did not move all of these storylines as far forward as I was hoping for. We did finally get to see two of these storylines overlap at the very end - that was a definite plus and I enjoyed getting to see the results of this occurrence.
Did I enjoy this book? Yes, I did.
I think one of its strengths is the development of the relationships that were got to see and the ties that were formed between the various characters. Mr. Wisehart really did a fantastic job in that department. Ty, Aryian and Ferrin are MC's that you cannot help but like and root for. They each also have a character - and sometimes more than one - that serves as a friend or companion and those relationships grew strong and are only getting stronger. We see Ty's confidence in his magic increase, Ferrin's confidence in his abilities grow and Ayrion...well...no spoilers on that front.
I am looking forward to the next installment in the series as we are left at a time in each of the different storylines that events have occurred (and most unexpectedly) so it leaves the reader eager to find out what is going to happen next.
I alternated between listening to the audio version and reading the print version. I did enjoy the narrator and had no problems with the narration. So... now I guess it is back to waiting on the next book. I just need to remind myself to come back and look at this review before I start Book 4 so that hopefully, it won't take me so long next time to dive back into the story.
