“It’s the comedown,” I say, pulling my hand back. “The free fall from whatever high you’re on, or think you’re on, to a reality that’s harsher than you were expecting, than you could’ve ever expected. This life isn’t all glitz and glam, Julian. It’s the fucking jungle, except during our fight for survival, we also end up killing ourselves.”
“There are different kinds of love like there are different kinds of rainstorms.”
“Rainstorms? They all result in the same thing though, getting wet. It’s the same with love.”
Julian shakes his head. “Some rain can be seen by anybody looking for it. Big, fat drops that splash against your clothes. Your brain tells you you’re wet as you’re getting wet. Some rain is so fine, like mist that penetrates silently, there is no need to look for it because you’re already drenched past your clothes and into your skin before your brain even gets the chance to tell you anything. Some love is seen and felt, but some doesn’t need to be seen to be felt at all.”
“What sets them apart?”
“Sacrifice.”
If his love feels anything like his care, he’s more like a cloudburst—sudden, violent, and has the potential to flood a person’s heart within seconds.
