In 2024, the renewed interest in nuclear power as a ‘green’ alternative to fossil fuel energy sources also reawakens the concern for handling its deadly, almost everlasting consequence: nuclear waste. Working for a Sacramento think tank, Rusty Tanover, a young architect with mild OCD proposes a once ridiculed notion of launching the hazardous and toxic material into space towards the sun. He shows how using a SpaceX Starship could actually bring the astronomical costs down to a reasonable amount. Rusty manages to convince both SpaceX and a congressional aide to consider his idea and an experimental launch is proposed as a proof-of-concept mission.
Meanwhile, unknown to our hero, the FBI is investigating a murderous, white supremacist terrorist organization in the Pacific Northwest that is actively seeking a way to foment a race war by targeting a significant Black population in California with a radioactive, environmental disaster. In the course of his travels to support his proposal, Rusty’s path crosses with both a beautiful FBI agent, and the terrorists who learn of his rocket idea and then decide to subvert it for their own evil ends.
Set against a backdrop of modern relationships in a post pandemic world, where personal connections feel more tentative and are difficult to make, Rusty and his companions follow a trail of murder and mayhem across the West Coast, in a desperate race to foil the supremacists’ ultimate plot. As the fateful launch approaches, can disaster be prevented, or will all hell rain down on an unsuspecting target?
