The twenty-third “ Mountain Man” adventure has arrived!
Uzziah came up with a plan for the boys to make a new grubstake. They would work for the Union Pacific as it crawled its way across country.
The job boss there at Hell on Wheels wouldn’t give Immanuel a job working the rails because he was too old. In a turn of events, Immanuel struck out in his mountain man way and earned himself a job as Thomas Durant’s personal bodyguard. Soon after, Immanuel and Uzziah both became Durant’s private security.
Durant went to Washington to secure more funding, and the boys accompanied him. Uzziah took the opportunity and visited his ma, Rahab, and the rest of the family, where a young boy became attached to him. He got word that things were not going well for Immanuel in Washington, so he returned to find Immanuel losing his grip on reality. Uzziah thought he had shaken off the boy on the journey, but he had stowed away on the train, so Uzziah and Immanuel took him in.
When they returned to Hell on Wheels, the young boy kept getting into trouble, and when they were at the Dale Creek Crossing, the longest bridge built by the Union Pacific across country, the trouble nearly ended Immanuel’s life.
Will the boys continue with the Union Pacific even after Immanuel’s accident? Will they decide to go south back to the Rockies, and take the young boy with them, knowing that becoming a mountain man would be safer for him than staying on in Hell on Wheels?
Join the inimitable boys who seem to be drawing their partnership toward some sort of conclusion, if father time cannot be persuaded to hold back.
