She is finally ready to feel the heat …

Lady Sylvia St. Vincent has more than done her duty. She married the elderly lord her parents arranged for her. She produced an heir for the marquessate. At twenty-eight, she is finally free to live out her widowhood exactly how she sees fit.

And the first thing on her list? Take a lover who will make her toes curl.

Jasper thought he’d outgrown his childhood crush. He is a soldier. A successful businessman. A pillar of his community. But when Sylvia steps into the room, he’s that doe-eyed boy again fumbling over his words. After a shared night of breathless passion, Jasper thinks all of his childhood dreams have come true.

Only to discover that the woman he loves is set on a dalliance. And nothing more.

But he’s determined to leave her out in the cold …

Sylvia is shocked by the unbridled desire Jasper has unleashed within her. But while he wishes for love, marriage, and commitment, she is determined to maintain her hard-won independence.

Who will win this battle of wills—the wicked widow or the newly awakened rogue?

➕ What I liked :

A widow heroine.

Good hero.

Some tiny tiny bits in the beginning of the story were a little interesting.

A little friends to lovers vibe.

➖ What I disliked:

The heroine is a tiny bit “older” (28) then most other “standard”/conventional heroines in the historical romance genre and that is a good thing👍👍…. But this is a book/series about a widow/widows and it feels like a missed opportunity that the author did not add a more mature and older heroine that was at least 30+… or even 40+ or 50+…. in a book about widows.
There is a very brief and short mention in this book of one of the widows/members in the Wicked Widows' League that is in her mid-forties (Lady Schmidt)… but I do not think she has her own book??
So this book/story is a let-down in that department….. but who knows about the other books in the series????

Some strange word choices in the writing that were a little jarring….. like: “He buried his mouth in hers”…. And some other odd word choices.

Weird/unnecessary and immature/shallow comment about a shorter man in the book… said by heroines friend and really adds nothing and seems both out of place and anachronistic.

It is a shorter story/novella … but it still feels rushed…. About the romance and about the main characters and the plot.

The character description/visual appearance of the both the main characters are a bit on the vague side.

Formulaic.

Underwhelming.

For a book/story that is about a widow being “wicked” and a widow taking a lover/lovers…. The sex scenes were a little lackluster.

Thanks to BookSprout for a copy of this novella and this is my freely given opinion.

This is part of the greater overarching world of the Wicked Widows' League, but the first I am reading from the series and I felt that it could enjoyed on it's own without reading the others, though I am sure there are shared characters that show up.

Sylvia St. Vincent had endured a couple of seasons as a silent, shy wallflower, not taking on the Marriage Mart before sacrificing herself to a contracted marriage to a much older man. After a decade of enduring that marriage, she is finally coming out of her widowhood, no longer silent, and no longer a wallflower. She is determined to enjoy being a widow, and bursts out of her black widows weeds determined to make a splash and find some pleasure for herself. In doing so, she catches the eyes of the patronesses of the Widows' League, and they offer her the opportunity to apply to be a member.

In the meantime, she also catches the eye of an old friend. Jasper Armstrong is her brother's best friend and had been out of the country as a soldier for his country. He has returned to society, the heir to a dukedom, a handsome hero, and a highly desired bachelor on the Marriage Mart. But he always had a tendre for his friend's sister, and when he sees her again, he also sees a second chance at gaining her as his wife, to love for the rest of his life.

Except that is not what Sylvia wants. She does not want to be under the control of a man again - she wants to revel and explore her freedom. Despite their passion for each other and the pleasure they share in each other's arms, when Sylvia finds out that Jasper wants to make her his wife, she pushes him away and puts up barriers, hurting him greatly. It is not what she wants, but she also wants to protect her hard won freedom as well.

A short passionate second chance romance that sees Sylvia conflicted about what she thinks she wants and what she finds with Jasper.

Cara Maxwell is still a fairly new author to me. This is only my 7th book by her and just picked her up August 2022. This is Book 4 of an 18 book series with different authors. I plan on only reading the actual authors I read normally. With that being said, of the 18 books I will only read 6. I hope they are good stand-alone reads.

I enjoyed reading Sylvia and Jasper's story. They had great chemistry. Short but a good read.

Rogue Awakening is the fourth book in the high-heat Wicked Widows League Series by Cara Maxwell. By this reviewer's standards, it was a flaming success!

It could easily be read as a stand-alone novel, as it is the first book of the series I've had the honor of reading, and it made perfect sense. The Rogue Awakening had many traditional roles of regency heroes, and heroines were reversed within the series. For example, the heroine, Lady Sylvia St. Vincent, was by far the more promiscuous one as she had spent a decade in a loveless marriage and, after her mourning period, was set on becoming a member of the Wicked Widows League, a group of flamboyant Widows with a string of handsome lovers.

She was set to join this group, and nothing could stop her, well perhaps not nothing....true love could have definitely stopped her!

At the beginning, you are absolutely hooked into the story by how over the top it is! The world-building is just intriguing, to say the least. I personally thought she would end up with the handsome duke casting glances at her from across the ballroom during the opening chapter. I always love a good duke romance. However, it was not to be because the absolutely darling hero ended up being the decorated military officer Jasper Armstrong, the newly minted Viscount Warrington. Which was just as well because he came into the story absolutely head over heels for the heroine, and he had been since they had first met.

For anyone who is interested in this story, it would fall into the best friend's brother trope. Has a lot of intimacy and is a very light-hearted read.

Pluses and Minuses

This book has its pluses and minuses. I absolutely adore the hero. He's such a sweetheart, and he's already in love with the heroine when the book opens. He's been in love with her for a very long time, since he was a 12-year-old boy admiring his best friend’s older sister. He's a grown man now, who served with distinction in the Napoleonic Wars, and she's a widow just past her year of mourning. He is so sweet, so sincere, so earnest in his thoughts of love and reverence for her that it was hard to watch when she rebuffed him. He deserved better!! But we know from the setup of the book that the heroine wants to maintain her freedom, finally liberated from her duty marriage to a much older man whom she never loved. She's looking for a lover, not a lifelong mate. While I adored the hero, the book had some peculiar writing issues that made me pause every now and then. Wrong forms of words were used (e.g., reprove instead of reproof”, odd turns of phrase jarred (e.g., “He buried his mouth in hers”), etc. There are enough of these language oddities to pull me out of the story, unfortunately. This is a quick read, so there's little character development or plot. Although this book's premise has to do with a widow taking lovers and maintaining her independence, the intimate scenes weren't quite as racy as I hoped they might be, though the hero was, of course, wonderful.

I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.

Such a yummy story. Sylvia spent a decade in an arranged marriage to a man old enough to be her grandfather. A year after his death, she decided she wanted to avail herself of all the privileges of being a widow. Jasper, her younger brother’s best friend and former soldier, has been in love with Sylvia forever. So when she wants a wild night of passion, he is only too happy to agree. Unfortunately, he wants to marry her and she wants her freedom. To complicate matters, she has received an enticing invitation from the Wicked Widow Society. Sylvia is thrown into an emotional battle between what she says she wants, and the price she will have to pay to get it. Jasper, on the other hand, is one walking fantasy who has put his heart and soul on the line, and the chemstry between the two of them practically leaps off the page. It is so easy to get caught up in this story, and at one point there was even a tear running down my check. Thank goodness for Calvin! Loved it!.

Tropes: brother's best friend; friends to lovers; MFC wants independence; he falls first
Steam level: 3ish
Fine as a standalone.

3.25 stars. I like this author, and this is a low-angst, short read with a super sweet MMC. It serves as a prequel of sorts to her fun Racing Rogues series. As a novella it's enjoyable enough but is rather thin on characterization and conflict. I would have liked more details about the main characters' early relationship and why the MMC was so deeply in love with a woman he'd spent no time with as an adult. You also get no insight into his war experiences and how they've shaped him. I found myself very frustrated with the MFC and her behavior with him; her fixation on a club where none of the members had yet behaved in a warm or supportive manner to her, as opposed to the attentiveness of the MMC, made no sense. Of course she comes around and they get their HEA.There are a handful of awkward phrases/places where editing could have been tighter. The epilogue is a nice bridge to Racing Rogues, though

What an intriguing series! Enough of young, shy debutantes who don’t know anything about the world and the male sex! We want smart, sexy widows who are not afraid of asking for what they want! And our heroine is exactly that, a young window yearning for independence and a bit of dalliance and pleasure after a strained marriage. Pity she chooses a childhood crush who’s always been in love with her for her no-strings-attached affair… The hero is such a lovable and caring man that he’s even willing to fake being a rake, meaning accepting her terms, in order to woo her. I loved their interactions, I loved the writing (but this is not news, because this is Cara Maxwell and I love everything she writes) and I loved the fact that this is a sort of prequel to a series I adored, Racing Rogues. The book is on the short side, but it’s perfect this way, a pleasant read between heftier books!

Convincing the Widow . . .

Lady Sylvia St. Vincent obeyed her parents and did her “duty” marrying a man old enough to be her grandfather! Now that he had died and she has mourned the appropriate amount of time, she is free to live as she pleases. She is finally ready to enjoy a lover to make this long wait worthwhile.

Jasper Armstrong, the Viscount Warrington, is finished with the war and needs to settle down with a wife as he is next in line to become a Duke. With Sylvia now a widow, he is hopeful she will be interested in him. The problem is, she wants only a night of passion without commitment while he wants a lifetime future with this woman he has loved for many years. Will he convince her that they could be happy together in a loving, passionate marriage? Or is she determined to remain unattached and free?

The characters and storyline are wonderful! I was cheering for Jasper the whole time. He was so sincere and likable. Will he win her heart?

Historical romance. Regency-era England. Book 4 of the Wicked Widows’ League series. Sylvia is recently out of mourning for her much older husband of a decade and is ready to join the wicked widows. She’s at a ball looking for a gentleman to take to bed and settles on her younger brother’s best friend, Jasper, who has recently returned to England. Jasper has been in love with Sylvia for years and is hoping that this is the beginning of a courtship and marriage, but Sylvia doesn’t want to give up her freedom. This is a novella-length book that is a pretty quick and steamy read and the conflict does ultimately get wrapped up in short order. I love mixing in shorter reads in between longer more epic angsty ones.

After ten years of dull and passionless marriage, Lady Sylvia St. Vincent is out of mourning and determined to enjoy the freedom of being a widow. Jasper Alexander is a soldier, successful businessman, heir to a dukedom, and her younger brother’s best friend. They are friends and there is an attraction. Sylvia is ready to take a lover, and she chooses Jasper. This is a charming friends-to-lovers story with a steamy romance. Sylvia and Jasper are great characters with awesome chemistry. She is a woman who wants to spread her wings. He wants to settle down. Will they find their way to happily ever after? She wants to be a Wicked Widow, but she finds that she only wants to be wicked with Jasper. Enjoyable story.

Cara Maxwell definitely understands the job!

Great characters, sympathetic conflict, and plenty of steam (seriously, these are gloriously hot scenes). Both Sylvia and Jasper are thoughtfully created with perfectly rational motivations for their choices. Sylvia is experiencing social independence for the first time after a loveless marriage and subsequent mourning period, and she is loath to relinquish her freedom. Jasper has been in love with her forever and is determined marry her.

This is my first book by Maxwell, and I am immediately going to read her entire backlist.
Characters, heat, and quality of writing are all 5 stars!.

So well written, full of love, steamy scenes, wants and just having some freedom. Sylvia had been married to a married to a man that was old enough to be her Grandfather before he died. Jasper has returned home from the war and needs to marry for the Dukedom. They meet up at a ball and agreement to be together but not marry. Jasper wants to marry her and hopes and hopes the time they spend together will help Sylvia fall in love in him. Lots of steamy scenes between them. Excellent book in this series, can't wait for the next book. Would recommend this book to everyone.

Her plans went up in smoke.
Now with the death of her husband and she now finally have the freedom she so wanted. Our heroine had her whole future planed out. She even has some rules to follow to insure the title of a wicked widow. She just never expected that an old friend of her brothers would kind of put a monkey wrench into her plans. This well written and charming book was so much fun to read. I loved the misguided heroine and the hero was lovely, but her brother well I was a real fan of his. It is a spicy little number that I highly recommend. I did receive a free copy of this book from Booksprout and voluntarily chose to review it.

Lady Sylvia St. Vincent is finally free from a ten year loveless marriage. All she wants is her freedom to choose, especially a lover. To be a member of the Wicked Widows League is her wish, until her brother's best friend returns from fighting for England. Jaspar Armstrong, the Viscount Warrington, has been in love with Sylvia since he was twelve years old. When she proposes they become lovers, he agrees. He wants marriage, but she does not. Jasper's challenge is to change her mind. You can't help but feel Jasper's hope and pain. Very passionate love story with a lot of steam. What a start to the Wicked Widows League series!

Rogue awakening is a story about a widow and her brother’s best friend.
Sylvia’s first foray into society after her mourning, was to meet with Jasper, after so many years. They shared a dance at a ball. Sylvia wanted to have a night of unbridled passion with him. In the morning, and the words Jasper uttered, Sylvia demands he leaves. Later on Sylvia goes to apologise and they agree on a bargain. After a visit from her brother, Jasper keeps appearing at social gatherings where she doesn’t expect him.
In the end, Jasper gets his way, and they both get their HEA.

Rules are always meant to be broken... especially when the love Jasper has for Sylvia breaks them! Can he convince her to give up a wicked widow existence and take chance on him? Hint HEA!

Passionate, sensual and steamy scenes aplenty this is such an amazing story! Told from dual POV reveals intimately their thoughts, feelings and emotions as they explore their relationship. There's an epilogue and a HEA.

Freedom versus remarriage

Lady Sylvia at eight and twenty seeks her freedom as a widow yet wanting a fulfilling love life. Jasper seeks her by his side for life. She seduces, he proposes, she refuses but...it can't be ignored the deep desire for each other. Each fight for what they want with neither willing to cede to the other. An interesting story to see who will finally cease to admit they belong together for life.
