Dr. Paul Wilson Brand, CBE (17 July 1914 – 8 July 2003) grew up in India, studied medicine in London, and practiced orthopedic surgery in India and the United States. He achieved world renown for his innovative techniques in the treatment of leprosy.

He was a pioneer in developing tendon transfer techniques for use in the hands of those with leprosy. He was the first physician to appreciate that leprosy did not cause the rotting away of tissues, but that it was the loss of the sensation of pain which made sufferers susceptible to injury. Brand contributed extensively to the fields of hand surgery and hand therapy through his publications and lectures, He wrote Clinical Mechanics of the Hand, still considered a classic in the field of hand surgery

He also wrote popular autobiographical books about his childhood, his parents' missionary work, and his philosophy about the valuable properties of pain. One of his best known books, co-written with Philip Yancey, is Pain: The Gift Nobody Wants (1993), republished in 1997 as The Gift of Pain.

Before his death in 2003, he received many honors, including the prestigious Albert Lasker Award and appointment as Commander of the Order of the British Empire.

Dr. Paul Brand's message of satisfaction in Jesus brings in his own experiences as a surgeon serving the leprosy community and his knowledge of the workings of the human body and aligns them with deep spiritual truths. His own joy (evidence, I think, of his own satisfaction in Jesus) rings through his writing - and it was contagious for me as a reader. A delightful, hopeful read!

As a Doctor and Missionary in India where his work involved surgery on those least fortunate, he has the unique ability to know the human body without pain which slowly maims. His other well known book is Fearfully and Wonderfully Made which deals with his time treating those with Leprosy with so much understanding it takes your breath away.
This book is full of illustrations of how everyday things bring so much fullness, hence the title of the book!
Water to quench our thirst told with such grace you can feel the drops touch your tongue. The job of the physical tongue in our tasting and digesting our food as well as being used for good or evil in our speech. Then the teeth, or guardians of the gate as Dr. Brand calls them are examined and many more.
He draws on everyday things and examines every aspect of what we take for granted.
To understand what I am attempting to share, you will need to "taste and see" for yourself!

This was another autobiography. This book was written by a doctor so it has no flourish but is written in a straightforward matter of fact way. "Sharing is quite different from rationing and different from a levy. It's voluntary and born of love and concern instead of rules and necessity." "The simple life is a joyful life." This was both an informative and inspiring book.

Basic theology, basic science. There are a few interesting ideas and stories, but not enough to make for a robust book. It's light and fluffy fare, and as a Christian and a science-enthusiast, I was disappointed.

This book took me a while to get through and I think it is better read in chunks. It was very thought provoking and deep though :)

I rather enjoyed reading this book actually. It was a welcomed blend of spirituality and medicine.
