Upon Luanna’s return to her hometown of Tosle, she realises that the only thing to change over the past four hundred years are its inhabitants. It is there that, after a century of flitting from place to place, she finally meets someone worth settling down with. For the first time in decades, she feels normal again, until their differences begin to take a toll on their marriage. But, just as things are about to hit breaking point, an accident forces her to remember how fragile humans are. Now Hazel Turner, her best friend, is the only person left standing between Luna and a bloody massacre. How is she supposed to stop a four-hundred-year-old vampire from losing control and giving in to her baser instincts? After all, she’s only human.
Bethany Nicholls was born in a small port town on the outskirts of Yorkshire where she still resides with her fiancé and lockdown rescue dog, Diesel. The only thing which predates her love of spreadsheets is that for writing, and she began her journey to become an author in 2009. Since then, she has had short stories and poetry published in multiple anthologies though Waning is her first full-length novel.
I was provided an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Characters: it primarily runs the story from two perspectives Luna Goodwin a centuries vampire-like individual called a fledgling, she is recently widowed (at the start of the story) as her wife Candy (real name Candice) literally just died. You also have Hazel, her human best friend she's known for 16 years. Who's trying to be there as her best friend, but has her own problems which is explored further in the story after act 1. You also have a plethora of other characters, like Peter and Audrey, Candy's set in their way parents, who love her daughter, but hate her, for what they perceive as a life choice, though they disappear from the story after that part of the ark is completed. The last majorly have a mysterious Dr, who works for a shadowy organisation, though that wasn't properly explored in this story and may be further explored in the future entries of this series.
Plot: The plot of the story is fine, however it appears to be two main plots with a mini plot in the middle, bridging the two. This I feel was unnecessary, I feel if the mini plot had been removed and more development was placed in the two main plots.
The first main Plot is Luna having to grapple with the reality that the person she loved, possibly the first person she has loved in a long time.
The mini plot is a murder mystery that in the end is left unsolved in this story. Seemingly added to try and add a did she/didn't she to our fledgling protagonist. In the end, I feel this act was unnecessary other than introducing the Doctor, I feel that the doctor had an equal chance of figuring Luna out during the second main plot.
Anyway, the second main plot during the later was focused more on Hazel's friendship with Luna, and what life will be life when Hazel gets the worst news possible. This is where the Doctor explains who he allegedly works for.
As I wrote, the plot is fine, but the two main plots appear to have compressed themselves to make room for a mini plot, thus they appear to end quite quickly.
Rules: Ok, so in this universe, vampires exist, or A (singular) Vampire exists. Along with two inferior variants of vampires; Veterans and Fledglings. Fledglings when well fed are as brittle as normal humans, something Luna explains early on. However, when starved, which she is for most of the story, she does appear to gain incredible speed and increased strength. That part however wasn't properly explained. She does explain how she once entered a rage, that caused her to completely lose control. It is implied that this happens when she is hungry. Overall, solid ground work for the rules. But some further clarification may be needed in the future.
Setting: takes place in a modern English town setting. Nothing wrong or right with it, just a town.
Overall: I would rate the book three stars, there is potential and considering this is the authors first book, there are some issues I pointed out, but hopefully these issues will be addressed in the next entry. I will buy the sequel. It's a brief book with only 170 pages, my issues with the plot are addressed earlier, I wish that it had been longer, and to me, that tells me I enjoyed the plot overall, primarily due to the intrigue that will probably be explored in the sequel. Which I will buy to see where it goes.

Review:
👉Talking about the title of the book, the title of the book is really so interesting to read.
👉The cover is appealing and attractive as well.Writing style is appreciable .This book is a new take on one of our favourite elements of ty supernatural fiction genre - the vampires.Luna after living for over an eternity, running away from her creator, her confidants, her friends, has finally found a reason to stop running. After constantly leaving things behind and moving on, she meets someone she can rely on. Hazel is that someone Luna wishes to stay for. A stable job, a beautiful wife, a happy life. However, it is to remember that Luna is 400 years old and she has learnt some things over her many years that she sticks by. Humans are weak; even the strongest of realationships can crumble and, time is precious. Bloodthirst is at the heart of the story. Can a thirsty vampire be trusted? Will Hazel be able to stop a bloody massacre?
I enjoyed this book and think the series has potential. Strong characters, lots of lore to explore, narration that doesn't get tedious or complicated. Also, I didn't know there was a hole in my life that needed filling with sapphire vampires but that was a fun discovery. My gripe is that the plot felt unresolved. The two arcs I identified both felt rushed and one - the murder - seemed almost random, like it was only there to have two characters meet. Perhaps this will be explored and developed in the following book, but I would have liked this arc to have felt more complete.
