‘Self-prescribed desensitization’ – A powerful tool for a strong new leading character

Canadian author Terry Hayman has served as an attorney and a business speaker, and now devotes his time to acting and writing: he has published over fifty books, short story collections and novels, to date. Now he begins a series – the Jackson Traine series – of which JUMPBACK is the initial volume. His titular character is a professor of psychology – a wise occupation for a gentleman whose adventures are affected by brain changes that allow unique ‘powers’ to influence his interaction with his past, affect his abilities to investigate crimes, and introduce thinking patterns altered by PTSD – a reaction to his response to the traumatic loss of his brother.

Hayman’s power as an author bursts into flame in the opening chapter depicting a gang – the Demon Monks – beating 17-year-old Jackson’s older brother Kenny (aka Kentucky), a drug abuser, because of his ‘debt’ to the gang, and Jackson likewise is physically and emotionally traumatized in this vivid, realistic entanglement. The strength of writing is an overture to the quality of the story that follows, a synopsis of which follows: ‘Jackson Traine still suffers PTSD from the violent loss of his brother. Reluctantly moving back to Washington to teach college, the psychologist freezes when he recognizes one of his sibling’s killers in his classroom. And after a fight with that same gang member in a particle accelerator lab, an accidental electrocution gifts the frightened prof with the ability to rewind time ten minutes. Discovering his brother may still be alive and authorities are in on it, Jackson takes matters into his own hands. But every confrontation and jump back in time piles more trauma onto his already-struggling psyche. Can Jackson find his brother before the process destroys him completely?’

The quality of writing is first rate, introducing the ‘time travel’ time-lapse trait that heightens the intellectual aspects of the story, a solid romance theme, and a superb depiction of the university ambience that heightens the polarity of raw street life versus the intellectual realm. This is a superb entry point for a projected series – the work of a polished author! Very highly recommended.

I thoroughly enjoyed this time travel book. A great read that will keep your interest right from the first word to the very last. I finished it and immediately told my husband he HAD to read it next. Can't wait to start the next in the series.

Jumpback is exciting turn-the-page reading.

Jackson Traine’s unasked-for ability to travel in time is a plot device which comes to work seamlessly in advancing the tale, permitting an exploration of different outcomes in the same difficult situations. This is an interesting and fast paced story, each chapter ending with a demand that you start the next.

A fun read.
