Still Going Strong!

Two cases take center stage in six Graves: one centered on DI Kim Stone’s past, the other in the present involving a family found murdered.

An escaped convict is out for revenge on DI Kim Stone. At the same time, her team needs to put together the puzzle involving an apparent murder-suicide. There is also another storyline involving tensions between Kim’s team members.

Even though this is book #16 in the series, it can still be read as a standalone. However, readers who jump into this series might not fully appreciate the characters and relationship dynamics.

With Kim’s life in danger, she is forced to contend with having Leanne King assigned to her for protection. I didn’t love Leanne’s character in a previous installment, but she really grew on me in this one. I loved the banter between her and Kim. She brought a playful side to Kim, and she wasn’t afraid to go toe to toe with her. I hope we see her character again in the future.

It is so easy to immerse oneself in this series. The characters are quick-witted, full of heart, and smartly written. This installment was fast-paced, and both mysteries had me trying to put the pieces together. Kim’s battle with the escaped convict played out a little predictably, but the other case involved some good twists and turns. I was glad that Bryant and Penn’s relationship got more attention, but the focus is mainly on Kim's character, and the ending suggests that we might get a different Kim in book 17.

Favorite quotes:
“His name is Barney and he already fucking hates you.”

“Stone, we all know you have no friends.”

I can imagine many readers wondering how the 16th addition to Angela Marsons thrilling DI Kim Stone series, set in the West Midlands, gets 5 stars, all I can say is that they should read this outstanding crime series. This one opens with a scene that worries the heck out of me, and goes on to cover 2 harrowing cases. Stone and Bryant at a gruesome crime scene, a locked family home, there is arson, but that is not what is responsible for the 4 dead bodies, father William, 17 year old daughter Rosalind, and 15 year old son, Lewis have all been shot, apparently a murder-suicide by long term clinically depressed mother, Helen Daynes. Nothing is as it appears, it is not long before Stone casts doubt on what is assumed to have occurred, and it becomes clear this is a set up and someone else has killed the family. This is a case that brings back traumatic memories of Kim's childhood, particularly with her mother on her deathbed.

Stone's frustrations know no bounds when she finds herself locked out of the hunt for ex-forces, sicko psychopath, Symes, who has escaped from prison and is on a mission to kill her. She had previously prevented Symes from killing two abducted young girls and was responsible for the loss of one of his eyes, and his mind is obsessed with getting revenge. DCI 'Woody' Woodward has assigned Leanne King, a woman Stone is not fond of, to stick like glue to her as her personal protection officer. Stone's outrage at this cuts no ice with Woody, he is implacable, threatening to cut her loose from the police force. There is nothing she can do, and any attempts to get her team on her side fail, they are all worried sick about her, and approve of every effort to ensure her safety. There are numerous secrets that begin to emerge from within the Dayne family but will Kim continue to accept being on the sidelines when Symes kidnaps two little girls?

One of the highlights of this series is catching up with Stone's brilliant police team, Bryant, Penn and Stacey Wood, their utter commitment as they work all the hours, the banter that provides the shards of light in what is a particularly dark, intense and harrowing crime read, and it was a joy to see the development of the relationship and understanding between Kim and Leanne. I was glued to the pages, from start to finish, reading this riveting and well plotted thriller, with the suspense and tension off the charts as the storylines reach their nail biting conclusions. Once again Marsons has me eagerly anticipating the next book in this stellar series. Many thanks to the publisher for an ARC.

When Detective Kim Stone is called to the scene of a house fire, she discovers the bodies of the Daynes family - two teenage children and their parents. However, all is not as it seems. The family weren’t killed by the fire or smoke inhalation, but by gunshot wounds! The mother, Helen Daynes, was holding the gun.

Investigations reveal that Helen had a long history of clinical depression. Would that have been enough to want her family dead as well as herself?

The investigation has only just begun, when a dangerous psychopath escapes from jail. Symes has it in for Kim after she foiled his plan of kidnapping and torturing two little girls. She faces the most dangerous encounter of her entire career. She will never have faced an adversary quite as monstrous as this excuse for a human being.

So severe is the threat, that she has to have the services of a protection officer, and if you’re familiar with Kim, you’ll know that this doesn’t go down well to say the least! Especially as it’s someone she can’t stand.

I just love the characters in this wonderful series, their development has been terrific, all complex but very relatable - every book feels like a reunion with people I care about, and this particular storyline really hits where it hurts for those of us who can’t get enough of this brilliant series (made MY heart beat I can tell you)!
Fast paced and gripping as ever, book 16# is still as interesting and inventive as the first. Don’t ever stop Ms Marsons!

A terrifically terrifying five-star read for six graves with two excellent storylines that makes this a gripping and pulsating crime thriller. This was a new author for me and after this book it most certainly will not be my last.

With superb tension and enthralling thrill this book captivates you from the first pages. From the Prologue, I just knew I would love this book, and it did not disappoint.

The Plot

What is seemingly a house fire becomes a house of horrors as four members of the same family are discovered murdered in what appears to be a murder suicide.

Troubled, depressive and with a catalogue of bad decisions in her life Helen Daynes decides to kill her family before turning the gun on herself. Although a lot does not add up. The evidence is conflicting and the reputation of the woman in the centre of this nightmare is so misplaced and misunderstood. However, it was Helen that wanted to keep her past hidden and in the process of finding out who the real person was, we realise just how much suffering and bad decisions shapes a person. Heart breaking too.

The second storyline in ‘Six Graves’ is about a psychopath that Stone has put away. A man obsessed with revenge where a prison sentence did nothing to wash away the tides of resentment, bitterness, and retribution.

So, in a fabulous game of cat and mouse, Kim is trying to solve a murder whilst she is forced into quarantine and at the same time trying to avoid a ruthless killer on the hunt. A n escaped convict who only wants one outcome even if it means his own death.

Review and Comments

I was in the mood for a great thriller and happy to say this one delivered. One of the best all round thrillers I have read in a while for its characterisation, devilish thrilling plots, and superb tension.

I was totally absorbed in the book as we effortlessly worked our way through two different story lines which at the same time were so perfectly interwoven. However it was Kim Stone’s character that I really enjoyed here which is unusual in a book with a terrific plot. And to give you an insight into this character, her wing woman reminds her

“Every emotion you used tonight was beneficial. Your anger propelled you into action; your fear alerted you that something was wrong. Your stubbornness meant you didn’t stop working on Edna until you brought her back. Your sympathy prompted you to hold her hand. Your empathy got her daughter to the hospital. Your tenacity ensured we stayed there until there was nothing else that could be done.”, and so what is to be said other than..

Pulsating, compulsive, and terrifyingly terrific.

HAPPY BELATED PUB DAY TO THE BANGER THAT INTRODUCED ME TO MY FAVE SERIES

Thank you Bookouture and NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review. IYKYK, my reviews are always honest.

Writing: 4/5 | Plot: 4/5 | Ending: 4/5

Full disclaimer: I have never read a book in this series, and despite this being the SIXTEENTH installment, jumping in blind did not impact my ability to understand the characters and ongoing storylines.

THE PLOT

Kim Stone and her team are back in action on a grizzly family murder-suicide. Simultaneously, Kim is being hunted by Symes, an unhinged maniac determined to kill her. Ooh la la.

MY OPINION

Maybe it's a solid police procedural, maybe it's "book goggles" from the last dud I read, maybe it's Maybelline. Either way, I enjoyed this book. It was well-written, fast-paced, funny, and well-plotted. I find that police procedurals written by women never let me down. They're always well-rounded and have thought-out characters. They don't try too hard to emulate a John Wick type of vibe like male authored police procedurals. And often they have more diversity and inclusion in their cast instead of relying heavily on stereotypes like disgruntled, functioning alcoholic detective and women who are little more than sex dolls.

Yes, Kim had the maturity of a 5-year-old and swears like a sailor, but it was done in a way that doesn't come across as annoying. I can't really explain it. But I just felt like it was light-hearted and she was self-aware. Idk. I can't word properly right now LOL.

Anyways. The pace kept me blazing through this one. Short chapters, rotating POVs of the entire team, and TWO juicy j cases. I'm fascinated by familicide (I know, I know) so this was really scratching my itch if you know what I mean.

If you're looking for a quick, solid af police procedural with likable characters, this is the one. I'll def be picking up more of the Kim Stone series.

PROS AND CONS

Pros: juicy j plot, great cast of characters with their own personalities, well-paced, funny

Cons: idk I guess you could find Kim's behaviour a little annoyingly immature sometimes. And I think Symes' POV used "bitch" one too many times (and I'm not adverse to swearing)

My mind is wobbly and I've been left speechless......

That's the hand-off after an Angela Marsons' novel. Whether you've just gotten onboard with this one or you've been strapped in for the long haul, Six Graves is going to leave its mark. Marsons has taken her main character of DI Kim Stone and aimed for the sky. Kim has walked through life over broken glass. She resides locked into a holding pattern that plays non-stop since she was a child. Battle scars never quite heal on the inside and they bleed onto every element of the future.

Angela Marsons takes us back to the Black Country in the West Midlands. Kim Stone and her team have received a call in the Halesowen Police Department of a fire that took the lives of an entire family. Kim is immediately on the scene interviewing neighbors who appear to know nothing. When the crime scene investigators and the forensics crew put out their findings, it looks to be a murder/suicide situation. The rifle was found in the hands of the mother with the husband and two teenagers shot in their sleep. Kim is not so sure.

Flip to the next scene and we find that the worst bottomfeeder of the century, Symes, has escaped from prison. Symes is a notorious psychopath who lives off inflicting physical and emotional pain on others. He has his sites set on Kim who foiled his attempt to brutalize two young girls. He ruthlessly wants Kim to pay. DCI Woodward has assigned Leanne King, a witness protection officer, to guard Kim. Knowing the feisty Kim, she wants nothing to do with this set-up until Woody threatens her with withdrawal from the force.

Kim is shadowed by Leanne as she and the team investigate the deaths of those family members. Marsons sets up an almost impossible situation for Kim with the monkey on her back and her own personal safety. And we begin to rub elbows with the vicious Symes as he moves about the area in pursuit of Kim. The air is thick with evil.

Angela Marsons knots this one up tightly. Nothing in a Marsons' novel is in a linear fashion. As readers, we set and reset our opinions and faulty deductions. Marsons makes us work for the grand finale. She lets the erratic human element seep into this storyline where people are gonna do what people are gonna do. And there's an underlying thread that's going to make a true fan's heart beat in a staccato fashion.....guaranteed. Wowzers!

I received a copy of this book through NetGalley for an honest review. My thanks to Bookouture and to the talented Angela Marsons for the opportunity.

In a Nutshell: Worked just as a good thriller should. Well-written, fast-paced, great on thrills, gripping.

Story:
DI Kim Stone has been called to investigate a house fire. However, the fire isn’t as innocent as it seems. Four members of the Daynes family have been found dead, and each of them has been killed by gunshot, with the mother holding the gun. While Kim and her team are working on this case, they hear that a dangerous psychopath whom Kim had arrested a few years ago has escaped from prison and is out for her blood. With a protection officer by her side, Kim has no choice but to stay away from the limelight and yet find out what happened with the Daynes family.

Where the book worked for me:
✔ Quick-paced. Short chapters. Kept me gripped from start to end.

✔ No needless subplots. Everything is written keeping in mind the two main investigations - the Daynes murders and the psychopath’s escape.

✔ I loved Kim’s character. She is snarky and over-confident while still being vulnerable. I can see why she is such a beloved character in police procedurals. The rest of her team members - Bryant, Penn, Stacey Wood, Leanne – are also memorable.

✔ Two thrilling cases in a single crime book. “Buy one, get one free”!!

✔ No alcoholics, no sex sirens, no woman character who is described mainly by her looks. Also, no phones dying out at the last minute.

✔ Very inclusive and diverse.

✔ The prologue was brilliant and creates the right amount of suspense.

✔ It does complete justice to its “police procedural” genre. The focus is steadily on the investigations and the entire police team, even though Kim is the star of the show.

✔ It is surprisingly humorous for a thriller! And I mean, intelligent humour, not cheap cracks on someone's looks. The repartee between Kim and her team is superb.

Where the book could have worked better for me:
❌ Well, this isn’t the book’s fault. But I would have loved the book had I felt a oneness with Kim and her team. I felt a bit like Penn, the new joinee to her task force. The group has a smooth camaraderie and I felt lost trying to put everyone in their right roles. With a lot of characters to focus on, this took time. Mind you, the book works wonderfully as a standalone. Wherever there are references to any of the past books, the author provides enough information to help you bridge the gap. But being the series freak that I am, I still felt like I was watching a movie with an ensemble cast at the midway mark.

MINOR SPOILER:

I had almost given up on Angela Marsons after reading her romance book “If Only” last year. But a friend told me that she is fabulous in her crime thrillers. Having read this book, I heartily agree. This was my first Kim Stone book, and it won’t be the last. But I’ll make sure I will follow the series order now onwards.

4.25 stars.

My thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for the DRC of “Six Graves”. This review is voluntary and contains my honest opinion about the book.

Never dull. Never boring. Only getting better!!!!

Book #16 and Angela Marsons is still killing it! (pun intended)

DI Kim Stone and team are investigating a house fire where four people perished when it becomes obvious that this wasn't a housefire tragedy but another type of horrible tragedy that occurred. To make it worse, she has witnesses behaving strangely. They are secretive and appear to be hiding something. To add insult to injury, she learns that Symes - her I'm-not-your-number-one-fan enemy has escape and is on a collision course headed straight for her.

Just when she thought things could not be bad enough, Leanne King, her not so favorite witness protection officer has been assigned to her. Throw in Kim's not so favorite journalist and you know Kim is going to have a rough go of it in this book!

Kim Stone is such a strong and fascinating lead character. She is tough as nails with a heart of gold (especially for her dog!). In this book she not only has to deal with murder, family secrets (there are some whoppers here), and having her arch enemy coming after her. What's a girl to do?

This series just keeps getting better! I am always excited when I see there is a new book in the series. I also enjoyed the banter between Kim and Leanne. I hope we see more of Leanne in some capacity in future books as she is such a great character.

As with the other books in this series, Six Graves was well written, riveting, had me biting my nails and sitting on pins and needles. What's not to love about that?

Fans of the series are going to be extremely happy with this book. If you are new to the series, this could work as a stand alone. I guarantee you that if you start here, you will want to go back and read the previous books!

Another gripping, pulse pounding page turner from Marsons!

Thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley who provided me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All the thoughts and opinions are my own.

Angela Marsons has outdone herself with this sixteenth addition to her Kim Stone series! Right from the chilling prologue it’s clear that this is going to be an especially gripping read with a very tense, heart stopping climax.

At the scene of a house fire Kim discovers that all four members of the family have been shot dead, with the mother found holding the gun. It looks like a murder-suicide but something doesn’t look right to Kim and she and the team must look deep into the lives of the parents’ histories and those of two older children to work out what really happened.

During the investigation, Kim learns that Symes, a pyschopath she previously caught and jailed for life, has escaped and is looking for revenge. Her chief, DCI Woodward insists she is going nowhere near the hunt for him and assigns her witness protection officer Leanne King to keep her safe in case he comes looking for her. As we know Kim doesn’t play well with others and has crossed swords with Leanne before, so the thought of having her by side and in her house 24/7 does not please her at all. However, the boss has read Kim the riot act so she has no choice. Marsons has a lot of fun at Kim’s expense, making her having to play by Leanne’s rules. Leanne doesn’t much care for Kim either and is cold und unemotional, but we do get to see a glimpse of a wicked sense of humour that she hides deep down. This fast paced and suspenseful read truly was compelling and hard to put down with a very harrowing climax that is sure to stun her fans.

*HAPPY PUBLICATION DAY!*

Why has it taken me this long to pick up a book in this incredible series?

Why did I start with #16?

Six Graves focused on two equally exciting and appalling crimes. The first involved a fire at a rurally based residential house, and the discovery of four bodies within – father, mother, and two teenaged children. But, they didn’t die from the flames or smoke inhalation – all were shot. And, to make matters worse, a serial killer, with a long held vendetta against the star of the book series, DI Kim Stone, has escaped from prisons, and he will go to any lengths to get her attention.

It took me a few chapters to get into the swing of things, and familiarise myself with the series regulars. Totally my own fault of course, for leaping in at book sixteen. But, once I got that sorted, I warmed to all the character’s very quickly, especially Kim Stone. I got a kick out of her sense of humour, her sarcasm, and her witty comebacks. And, it also amused me when other character’s riled her up. But, no matter how irritating and annoying Kim’s squad, superiors, and work colleagues found her to be at times, I could always tell how much they respected and cared about her, and it was obvious she felt the same way in return. Furthermore, I adored how much Kim loved her dog, Barney. And, so as to spare you any unnecessary worry, no harm comes to Barney. There were references to past cases, and Kim’s childhood, so I did spoil a few things for myself, but if anything, it’s made me even more intrigued to read the rest of the series. Besides, I have a very short memory when it comes to recalling the finer points of books I’ve read, so I don’t think it will pose a problem.

The dialogue was amazing – the way the characters interacted felt natural and real, their emotions and reactions spot on. Chapters were short, and succinctly written, and the plot moved at a fast, easy-to-follow pace. The main narrator was Kim, but there were also POV’s from her team, suspects, victims, and one deranged serial killer. Both mysteries involved high stakes, multiple twists, and ended on a satisfying, unexpected, jaw-dropping note.

If you’re looking for a top notch police procedural/crime/suspense/mystery series to sink your teeth into – one which nicely balances the investigation with the personal lives of the police team, then you’ve found it. I’m beyond thrilled I have fourteen novels still to read.

I’d like to thank Netgalley, Bookouture, and Angela Marsons for the e-ARC.

I wish to send my thanks for this much-appreciated ARC to NetGalley and Bookouture in return for an honest review. The author, Angela Marsons, has managed to keep her crime thrillers/police procedurals fresh and riveting through the entire 16 books in the series featuring DI Kim Stone.

Her characters are well developed and believable, and it has been a pleasure to watch changes in the growth of members of Kim’s team. Kim underwent abuse and a horrible tragedy while young that caused her difficulties in relating to people on a personal level, but has become very protective of her police team. In turn, they appreciate her leadership and work well cooperatively. She is sympathetic and relates fiercely with victims of crime.

This book reads well as a stand-alone, but it has been fascinating to read previous books in the series. Each new book goes immediately to the top of my TBR next pile.

Kim has been called along with other team members to a sign of smoke issuing from a family home. There has been little fire damage, but a horrific scene awaits them. Two teenage children and their parents have been shot to death, and their dead mother is holding the murder weapon. It was discovered that the mother had a long history of psychiatric intervention for depression and the 17-year-old daughter was secretly pregnant. It looks like a family murder/suicide until Kim discovers clues that point to a strong possibility that all four were shot by an unknown suspect. How could this happen within a locked house?

There are many possible suspects, and it will take relentless police work to sort through and solve this dreadfully complex crime. Was it related to some angry employee at the father’s company? The remaining family survivors are much older adult twins, children of the dead parents. The older daughter has a baby, and her husband has managed to obtain a prominent position in the deceased father’s business. Her weaker brother is comforted and protected by his husband. A strange young male neighbour was later found hiding under the murdered girl's bed at the crime scene.

The family had secrets. Will the answer be found in the father’s will or in the business's financial records? Will the mother’s psychiatric records reveal any reason for the crime? Why are the detectives looking into child welfare records? Will outside security cameras shed any light on the murders?

There is a secondary plot. Two young girls were kidnapped by a foul and fiendish psychopath. He takes pleasure in inflicting extreme pain by punching and kicking his victims until they die in agony. Kim rescued the children and was responsible for him losing an eye in the skirmish. He has escaped from prison and has been planning to kill Kim in revenge after inflicting extreme torture. He has abducted two terrified young girls to draw Kim to their rescue and is watching her movements. Kim has been forbidden to interfere with the case and is placed in protective custody. A woman who Kim despises is assigned 24 hours a day to live in her home to see she is safe and goes nowhere near the newest kidnapping case. Kim’s heart aches for the two defenceless children.

Will she be able to restrain herself from trying to rescue the children, or will she lose her position in the police force and probably her life? The suspense is maintained at a high level throughout this intense, exciting book. Highly recommended!

I’m always impressed when authors can continuously create book after book in a series without them getting dull or repetitive. At number 16, Marsons has once again proved it can be done. The book grabs you from the get go, beginning at a funeral, with the identity of the dead person left open, and then flipping back 13 days.
Kim Stone is investigating the suspected murder suicide of a family. What makes it unique is the mother is the suspected murderer. To add to the chaos, a man she put away has escaped from prison and is coming for her. She’s been saddled with a witness protection officer and forbidden from helping in the search for him or the young girls he kidnaps. This, of course, goes counter to everything Kim wants to do.
This series is always fast paced, with short chapters that keep the energy level up. Marsons had me second guessing myself with each chapter as to how I thought the crime was committed. I adore the mix of personal and professional that we get for all of the team members. I tore through this book and was loath to put it down for any reason. The ending was perfect.
I highly recommend the book (and series) to fans of Kerry Wilkinson, Robert Bryndza and Robert Dugoni. The book can be read as a stand-alone but the entire series is equally strong.
My thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for an advance copy of this book.

EXCERPT: Bryant averted his gaze from the hole in the ground. He couldn't force himself to imagine the coffin descending into darkness.

He shrugged further into his jacket as a cold wind gusted around the small group of mourners at the top of the Powke Lane Cemetery. The coffin was being placed into the hearse for it's final journey up the hill to where they awaited its arrival.

Nice spot, people always said about the highest point of the cemetery. Mourners drew comfort from a good view from where they buried their loved ones. He suspected that the dead didn't care.

ABOUT 'SIX GRAVES': When Detective Kim Stone rushes to the scene of a house fire, she’s shocked to discover it’s claimed the lives of two teenage children and their parents. But this tragedy is not quite as it seems. Each body is marked by a gunshot wound and the mother, Helen Daynes, is holding the gun.

The case sparks painful childhood memories for Kim who suffered at the hands of her own abusive mother. As she begins to untangle the dark web of secrets within the Daynes family, Kim and her team discover Helen had a history of clinical depression. But could it have driven her to murder her loved ones?

Then Kim uncovers a tiny, vital clue in Helen’s bedroom that throws the investigation wide open. Could someone else have killed the Daynes family?

With the case only just underway, a deadly threat is made to Kim’s own life. Years ago, she rescued two little girls from the clutches of a dangerous psychopath who has just escaped prison and is coming for her.

A witness protection officer glued to her side, Kim must bite back her fear, as she keeps digging into the Daynes’s background and soon hits upon a shocking secret from Helen’s past that could crack the case. With the remaining family members in danger, Kim is under pressure like never before.

The monster circling Kim raises the stakes when he threatens the life of another innocent victim. He’s leading Kim straight to him. Forced to go against direct instructions from her superiors, will that one fateful decision cost her more than her job?

MY THOUGHTS: I approached Six Graves with some trepidation. Angela Marsons was signed by Bookouture to write a total of 16 DI Kim Stone books, and Six Graves is #16. While I longed to read it - I have loved every book in this series - I knew it was 'THE END'.

So I began with trepidation, the hollow feeling in my gut strengthened by the opening paragraphs (above). Obviously DI Kim Stone's funeral. On tenterhooks, I read on. Was I right? Yes, and no.

I read slowly, savouring each word, appreciating every nuance. The ending is at the beginning of the book, so I knew where we were going and really wasn't in any hurry to get there. Not at all. I didn't want this book, this series, to end. But, damn it, the mystery surrounding the apparent murder/suicide of a family, Syme's escape from custody and his subsequent abduction of two small girls had me glued to the pages, all previous intentions of drawing this read out for as long as possible fallen by the wayside.

By the end, I felt battered and drained, exhausted, bereft, and wanting to go back and start all over again.

Detective Kim Stone was at the scene of a house fire with her partner, Bryant, after they’d been called to the house. The unexpected still had power to shock police officers and finding the family – mother, father, boy and girl – all dead in the upstairs bedrooms was a dreadful shock. But worse was seeing the gun still in the hands of the wife and mother. Had Helen Daynes killed her husband and children? Contacting the older, married twins – Zach and Rachel – and their partners, their distress was awful to see.

With Kim and her team working on that case, the call from Woody was something Kim had never expected. A psychopath whom Kim had put away in prison years before, had escaped. Kim had caught him before he’d killed the two little girls he’d taken, and she knew he wanted his revenge on her. Putting a witness protection officer by Kim’s side was something she didn’t want, but it was worse because she couldn’t find the psychopath – another team was on that. Everyone knew Kim was in danger. As first one, then another child was taken, still Kim was refused access. She worked the Daynes case, determined to find the answers they needed. But what would happen to the little ones who’d been taken? Would he kill them, or save them until he had Kim?

Six Graves is the 16th in the DI Kim Stone series by Angela Marsons and oh my gosh! What an incredible ride! With plenty of action, electric pace and chills galore, I thoroughly enjoyed it. The author continues to write with a fresh pen, giving her readers a new scenario each time – this would almost be the best yet in this series! I certainly hope she doesn’t stop any time soon! Highly recommended (but start at the beginning!)

With thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for my digital ARC to read in exchange for an honest review.

Copy furnished by Net Galley for the price of a review.

DI Kim Stone and her team have their respective hands full starting off with a locked house and a murdered family.  Could it be as simple as a case of murder/suicide?  Maybe.  Maybe not.  Meanwhile, a dangerous psycho nutcase has escaped prison and has designs on Kim, whom he blames for thwarting him in a previous sicko scheme of his.  Kim's life is in danger, as is everyone and anyone in her life that means something to her.  A bodyguard is assigned to her, and it does not sit well with Kim.  What a shocker.  Ha!

This is one of those series where you feel you know the team players, their flaws, foibles, and strengths.  And who amongst us wouldn't want to spend some time with Barney, the dog?  Characters to love and to loathe, believable dialogue, and riveting plots.  If you are still putting off starting this series, you have some real treats in store for you.

the setup…
Detective Inspector (DI) Kim Stone is in the middle of a training exercise with her team when she’s suddenly whisked away by armed police officers to meet with her boss DCI Woodward. Symes, the most sadistic and evil man Kim’s ever put away, has escaped from prison and everyone knows she’s his target. Unfortunately, that means she’s forced to accept protection she loathes and her team won’t be assigned to recapture him. Meanwhile, she and her team are called to the scene of what appears to be the murder suicide of the Daynes family, the parents and two teens. But as they probe deeper, Kim and DS Bryant begin to realize that appearances can be deceiving.

the heart of the story…
I agree, Symes is the worst fictional villain I’ve ever encountered and I hate that he had to resurface, even though I knew it was inevitable. The prologue was just awful, emotionally that is, because it set up the story brilliantly. I won’t say anymore than it far surpassed my fears and sense of foreboding.

The Daynes case was an interesting one as at first it seemed the mother, Helen, had killed her family and then herself. It took some time to call that into question and figure things out but the exploration into the family revealed some themes that hit close to home for Kim. Yes, I’ll be a bit smug about having correctly figured out the truth but was brought down a bit by the shocking motive I didn’t see coming until it was close to being revealed.

the bottom line…
This story was an emotional overload, taxing my nervous system. I struggled to hang in there with the ending only because I lacked courage. Of course, I listened to the book and the narrator did a lot to contribute to the tension and suspense, which really is a good thing despite my being a baby about it. The ending was extraordinary and all I can ask is when are we getting the next book??? Ms. Marsons, you can’t leave me here for long!

This series keeps getting better and better!
In the fast-paced and intense 16th book in the series, Kim and the team find the dead bodies of a husband and wife and their twin children; apparent victims of a house fire.
But further investigation reveals that the family has been shot to death and apparently the culprit is none other than the mother, herself.
The evidence points to a murder-suicide.
But what is the motive?
And then, another member of the family is hit by a passing truck.
And Kim and her team would soon discover that nothing is quite as it seems.

Yes I just got approved for this book, and yes I started it straight away. Sorry to all the other books on my TBR, but when there is a new Kim Stone book I drop everything. And so happy that I did.

Book 16 in this series that just keeps going from strength to strength. After reading the prologue, my emotions were shot and ai needed to know more. I read it in 2 sittings and I feel exhausted.

Kim and her team have a lot going on as always, but never has a Kim needed protection before.. To say that she is not happy about it is an understatement and was entertaining reading. But when there is a killer on the loose who has made it clear that he wants revenge on her, she has no choice. All this while trying to work out why a whole family is dead.. was it a murder/suicide or something more.

Plenty of twist and turns as ever and a book that I could not get enough of. A compelling and clever story. Another easy 5 stars Angela Marsons.

Thanks to Bookouture and a NetGalley for my advanced copy to read.

This is book 16 in the DI Kim Stone series and it is still going strong! This book opens with a very ominous prologue, I was almost loath to continue but I did. Then we went back 13 days. A bunch of police teams are out in the country on team building exercises, every worker’s pet hate! Kim is summoned by DCI Woodward before it all wraps up to be told some really, really bad news.

Symes- a vicious killer who has sworn bloody revenge on Kim for capturing him and spoiling his anticipated fun in torturing two little girls - has escaped from custody and is still at large. Woodward assigns protection for Kim in the form of Leanne King. She is livid but is given no choice. Soon her team have an apparent murder/suicide of a family of four to investigate. With Leanne dogging her every step they begin to dig deep into the family background to work out why a mother would kill her children, her husband and then herself. But things are not as they seem with the Daynes family. Something in the past caused some deep seated trauma for Helen, the mother. Rozzie, the daughter, has been getting trolled viciously on her social media accounts and the surviving two children - Rachel and Zach, both adults and married do not get on very well.

Meanwhile, Symes has been busy planning his grand finale. He doesn’t care if he survives it. He almost expects to be caught or killed but nothing will deter him from his plan. He abducts first one little girl whose mother looks away for a few seconds, then another is abducted in full view in a daring snatch and grab outside a school. This, of course, is to entice Kim to come for him even though she has been expressly forbidden by Woodward. Other teams are working these abductions. But Symes knows just how to get to Kim.

This was a very dark story. Symes is pure evil! He has no better nature to appeal to. Kim is getting close to solving the Dayne family murders but she is also chaffing at not being allowed to search for the abducted girls. Kim and Leanne really don’t like each other and some of their verbal sparring is quite amusing. Towards the end there is a level of grudging respect between them. Leanne is only doing her job as a protection officer and she is very good at it. The pace of this book is relentless. You know from page one there is going to be a showdown and as I got closer to the end I was really dreading it. I can’t say any more except - if you have been following this series you really need to read this book. And if you haven’t been following the series - why not? It’s one of the best crime series out there.

Many thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for the much appreciated arc which I reviewed voluntarily and honestly.

SIX GRAVES is the 16th book in the D.I. Kim Stone crime-thriller series by best-selling author Angela Marsons. Angela Marsons remains one of my favorite mystery authors, and her publisher, Bookouture, always publishes the very best novels. I have read all of her books…and she keeps getting better. I don’t want this series to end!

It was so refreshing to touch base with Kim’s team again: DS Byant, DS Penn, and DC Stacey Wood. Her team are driven and compassionate in their work. The characters keep getting stronger and stronger. We also touch base with Kim’s boss, DCI Woodward, Alison Lowe, the behaviorist, Keats, the local pathologist, Doctor A, the Forensic anthropologist, Mitch, the lead forensic technician and Ted Morgan, the child psychologist…and who could forget Kim’s faithful dog, Barney. Love that dog!

Kim, Bryant, Stacey and Penn are on a weekend police team building exercise, when Kim is soon pulled back to the station by her boss, to inform her that Symes, a dangerous psychopath, that she was had helped convict, had just escaped from prison. Her boss wants her to take a leave of absence…or disappear until Symes is captured, as he wanted her dead.

Kim refuses and is assigned a witness protection officer, Leanne King, to protect her every move, who is a thorn in her side.

Detective Kim Stone, Leanne and her team race to a crime scene, a house fire, that claimed the life of two teenagers, Rosalind and Lewis and their parents, Helen and William Daynes. But each body has been shot and the mother is holding the gun? (murder-suicide scene?)

The case stirs up painful childhood memories for Kim who suffered at the hands of her own abusive mother. Kim and her team discover Helen had a history of clinical depression. But how could a mother kill her own children and husband?

Could someone else have killed the Daynes family?

While Kim keeps investigating the murders looking for further clues, she has to deal with a witness protection officer on her back, and a psychopath ready to pounce at the right opportunity.

This was a fast-paced psychological thriller, with relatable characters, and short chapters that kept the suspense level high. Another brilliant read that gripped you from beginning to the shocking end, that I didn’t see coming. Another winner!

Many thanks to the author, Bookouture and Netgalley for my digital copy.

Hard to believe this is the sixteenth book in the D.I Kim Stones series by author Angela Marsons. Each one has proven so entertaining and well written, the main character Kim Stone is an excellent character that grows with every book. This is another exciting read that I raced through eager to know what was going to happen.

Detective Kim Stone is called to the scene of an house fire where she discovers it has claimed the lives of two teenagers as well as their parents. On further examination it is discovered that each body is marked with a gunshot and mother Helen Daynes is holding the gun.

Kim herself had an abusive mother so the case brings back some painful memories for her personally and makes her even more determined to uncover the truth. It appears that Helen has an history of clinical depression, but would it be bad enough to see her kill the family she loved. Kim starts to try and piece together the evidence and when she discovers a vital clue in Helen’s bedroom it threatens to blow the case wide open. Could there be another explanation for the tragic deaths, was someone else responsible for the murders.

This is another excellent read and somehow this series just gets better. The familiarity of the characters makes it simple to instantly pick up from where you left off at the previous book. Excellent writing.

I would like to thank both Netgalley and Bookouture for supplying a copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.

Thank you to Angela Marsons, and NetGalley, for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This book grabs you from page 1, beginning at a funeral, with the identity of the coffin occupant undisclosed and then flipping back 13 days.

As always Six graves starts at 100mph and never lets up. Kim Stone is such a strong and fascinating lead character. She is tough as nails with a heart of gold (especially where her dog is concerned). She has a genuine affection for her team, which is why they work so well together, the banter between Kim and Bryant is legendary She does discover a few home truths about her team following a team building exercise.
As always, the plot is superb. There have been many very sick and twisted people in her books and I always wonder how she can possibly follow that, but every single book leaves me wanting more. My only criticism of . this episode and it is a relatively small one. Is that there isn't quite as much local history described as usual, Being local. i always look forward to learning more about where I live.

Somehow Angela can write hard hitting action, gory details and then write with such compassion (tissues required) about into the personal lives of these characters which really humanises them and helps us as readers to empathise with them and understand them more.

You could easily read this as a stand-alone and enjoy it but I’d recommend checking out the whole series. There isn’t a weak one in it. No fillers at all. The books have been knocked out at an amazing pace over the last few years but still all feel like they’ve been given the care and attention they require, and they never disappoint. Angela Marsons is one of the few authors, who I will drop everything for when I have her latest book in my possession. Very few authors can not only maintain the high quality of storytelling and character development but continue to surpass the previous book every time. I am in awe of her immense talent, please keep writing.
Everything is so realistically told that you feel genuine emotion as you and the stories stay with me for a long time afterwards, in fact some of the stories from the previous books still do. That’s how fantastic and memorable they are, but also speaks volumes to the effect they had on me as I read. I really don’t want to say too much about the plot, as it’s best discovered by readers for themselves.

As always a superb book with an emotional ending.

WOW!! What an opening!
#16 in the Kim Stone series and the pace doesn’t miss a beat…this book actually opens with a cliff hanger, so if you haven’t read the previous book/s…it really won’t matter because the story is self explanatory as it evolves…but trust me you will wish you had because…
My goodness Angela Marsons simply delivers…every single time!
This one is exceptionally good, and is probably her best yet…although it’s a fine line because (imho) every book in this series has been exceptional.
Just when you think they can’t get any better…boom!
I feel that to say more about the story might give away too much, read the book blurb and just dive right into it…it doesn’t disappoint!

Absolutely recommended!

It starts with a house fire where there are four victims but it is not what it would appear to be at first. The fire was a small kitchen fire and was quickly extinguished. The victims were all upstairs and died from gunshot wounds. To all appearances this was murder / suicide. The mother, Helen Daynes, is holding the gun. Then Kim finds a small clue that may prove this was something else. Someone else may have killed Helen, her husband, and her children.

Before Kim can get started comes word that Symes, a notorious psychopath from her past, has escaped from prison. Kim stopped his attempt to brutalize two young girls previously and in the process blinded him in one eye. Now Symes is on the loose and is out to seek revenge. He wants Kim and he doesn't care who gets in the way. He doesn't care if he lives as long as he can get to Kim. Knowing this DCI Woodward has assigned Leanne King, a witness protection officer, to guard Kim. Much to Kim's frustration.

To lure Kim to him Symes has abducted two young girls but Woody orders her to stay away from the case. She is to focus on the Daynes case but she can't even come into the office. How is she supposed to solve that case when she can't even go to the office? She wants to save the two young girls who have been abducted by Symes but Woody has put her on notice if she goes anywhere near that case. She has Leanne following her everywhere. Living in her home. If you have read Twisted Lies you know how Kim feels about Leanne. If you have read pretty much any other book in the series you know how Kim feels about anyone living in her home. The lone exception is her pet dog, Barney, and he has been sent away for his protection. Needless to say Kim is frustrated and angry. Very angry.

This book is a page turning thriller that keeps you in suspense. The story opens with a funeral but you don't know whose funeral. Everyone is in attendance ... except Kim!

It’s book sixteen in the amazing DI Kim Stone series and SIX GRAVES is reading as fresh and enthralling as the very first. Fans of Stone and her team have come to love these characters. We are privileged to know their deepest desires, their faults and we love them for their unswerving loyalty and their resilience.
Witty one-liners, amusing antagonism between Kim and Leanne, the terrifying evil force that is psychopath, Symes and the discomfort of anticipating what he might be capable of, the riveting mystery to untangle of who slaughtered a family… what a rollercoaster ride. I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough as the family’s secrets were slowly and tantalisingly revealed whilst the tension continued to build alongside with Symes’ cat-and-mouse pursuit of Kim.
Strap yourself in for some unguessable twists and shocking reveals. SIX GRAVES is unbearably tense at times, funny and heartrending at others. Marsons just gets better with each book.
Need I say… this one is unreservedly recommended!

I’m always thrilled to be approved for an ARC by this author - anything else gets bumped down the queue! Six Graves is the sixteenth book in the consistently compulsive DI Kim Stone series, about a CID team from the Midlands solving complex murder cases. Each book works as a stand-alone but there are references to previous cases and the character dynamics will make much more sense if they are read in order. This was another tense procedural which teases the reader with a shocking possibility then puts you through the wringer to find out what happened.

Kim’s team are attending a funeral, numb with disbelief at what has happened. Flashing back two weeks, we learn that vicious psychopath Symes (from book 3, Lost Girls) has escaped from prison and is coming for Kim. To her horror, her DCI Woody has assigned her a minder for her protection- in Kim’s eyes, the worst person possible. Then they are assigned a case - the horrific murder-suicide of a family of four. How can Kim catch a killer when a vicious predator is ready to pounce?

While I do despair that even after sixteen books and every possible trauma, Kim hasn’t evolved one bit and still behaves like a bratty teenager, her prickly pigheadedness and snarly insults are part of what make her so addictive as a character. Her terrible childhood continues to poison her life and she sees echoes of it in every case. The rest of her loyal team are the perfect counterbalance and watching them swing into action despite their differences is an important part of each book. I enjoyed the bickering between Kim and Leanne - a not dissimilar relationship to the one she has with Frost.
I was very happy that the author has reverted to normal dialogue for all the characters rather than the heavy regional dialect she lumbered Stacey with in the earlier books.

I did guess the identity of the killer before the reveal, and suspect the other big twist, but this didn’t affect my enjoyment in any way. The only thing I was disappointed by was the cover - the publisher has gone back to putting Kim in a bright red coat - something she would never wear, suggesting a lack of originality that maligns the book - a huge mistake in my opinion. I’m sure established fans won’t notice or even care, but it’s been so overdone in recent years that new readers might scroll/walk on by.

I do like the way Marsons explores a different social issue in each book, and gives her killers motives beyond just another sexually motivated serial killer. It’s impressive that she keeps finding new plots and issues even after so many books. The ending leaves things open for the series to shift direction and I’ll be waiting impatiently to find out what happens next. 4.5 stars rounded up.
Thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for the ARC. I am posting this honest review voluntarily. Six Graves is published on May 12th.
