Whatever ideas, plans and dreams you have, you've got to go for them! Be your biggest supporter, learn to eradicate the doubts in your mind, embrace the rejections and start opening doors...'
Reggie Nelson had a tough childhood growing up on a council estate in east London. His father suddenly died and his mother had to work multiple jobs just to get by. But when she had to collect Reggie from a cell where he, at only 12, was being held for troublemaking, he knew he needed to change. After catching an episode of How'd You Get So Rich?, Reggie was inspired to get any advice he could to help him turn his life around. So, he got on a train to London's most affluent areas and started knocking on doors. What he found was more powerful than he thought possible - and changed the course of his life.
Inspiring, moving and empowering, Opening Doors is a story of how the power of guidance, visibility and mentoring can give anyone the platform to learn and succeed. Because when one door closes, another door will always open...
the gravity of this text is one that i cannot begin to dive into justly… there are so many things i see parallels with Nelson’s story and my own life. from growing up in a council flat in a working class family, and doing all my online assessment centres for asset management firms within a council house, this has all framed my own struggle. i still have not made and i am far from it. simply just reading about the process and the entire journey to breaking these barriers, into the untapped potential and effectively, going through the ‘back-door’ is something that has given me a lot to reflect upon and internalise.
it’s not easy being vulnerable and so transparent in the struggles faced, especially the failures but all of it leads to a purpose.
i wish i had read this earlier, but i know there was a reason to me reading it now, as i do believe i needed to hear certain pieces of advice in this text.
I have just finished this book and I am blown away by this young man’s story. I was awe-struck! This is my top read of 2022 and I can not wait to recommend it to friends and family. I am an English teacher in England, and I will be recommending my school librarian gets copies of this book for the school library. This is an inspiring book that every young person should read.
Excellent inspiring story, I would recommended for any aspiring banker, young professional working in London.
I came across this book because he came into our workplace to give a to about social mobility. A very easy read. Would give it 5 stars, if the learnings and recommendations were a bit better explained, as the message is quite strong.
This is one incredible young man ... and that he never forgot God, his roots, his parents or sibling says so much. This book should be made compulsory reading for young people everywhere. I am a mentor myself, and have learnt so much. Ty Reggie, for sharing your heartaches and successes so we may learn from them.
It showed up as a recommendation on #goodreads and as I go through quite a few audiobooks on walks with my dogs it was perfect. An inspirational non fiction about the author’s road from working class immigrant in London to a job in the city, literally starting by knocking on doors. He is likeable and open and knows when a chance shows its face. He is not afraid of rejection and we could all learn from that. My only hesitation is not personally being motivated by money and fast cars. I do however respect his journey and applaud his achievements. #openingdoors #reggienelson
Fantastic book, very inspirational and think a lot can be applied to many industries. Really impactful story of Reggie life too, have been recommending to everyone!
Not what i expected and i found it to be not that well written. To me it seems very drawn out and the points at the end of chapters are not that eye opening.
