Take Charge Series #5

Anne de Bourgh Takes Charge : A Pride & Prejudice Variation

Rate this book
In the 5th book in this series, it is Anne de Bourgh’s (who more often than not is a footnote in most books based on Pride & Prejudice) turn to take charge.

Similar to canon, Anne is sickly and had a bad bout of scarlet fever when she is around 10 years. Unlike canon, she is not a wallflower sitting and sniffing while her companion piles shawls on her.

In her own words from the story, just because she is weak of body does not mean she is weak of mind. We see the affect she has on the lives of those around her.

As in canon, Lizzy comes to Hunsford to visit Charlotte Collins. That is where we separate from canon. Lady Catherine attemptsto be the woman we all love to hate, but how will her story play out when factoring in a strong and resolute Anne?
Before Darcy and his cousin come to Kent, Lizzy and Anne form a friendship and then we see how Anne influences the courses that out favourite (and some hated) characters travel.

Join me as we explore an Anne de Bourgh who is very different from the one we are used to reading about.

I have three children and after a disastrous first marriage I found my soul mate who I thought that was lost to me over 25 years ago. I recently married the love of my life. I live with my soul mate in Australasia and have three pets, two cats, Darcy and Bingley and a golden lab, Honey.

Like many high school students, Pride and Prejudice was assigned to me in an English literature class. It was not my favourite book, but I read it as I had to. I forgot about the book until in my 30’s when I saw and fell in love with the 1995 Pride and Prejudice version made for TV in England, and purchased a copy of the DVD that is now much played.

The tipping point was the 2005 big screen adaption of P&P. Not long after seeing it I found and read the complete works of Jane Austen on Amazon, starting with Pride and Prejudice. The latter book is by far my favourite. After I read it three of four times over, I wistfully said to myself: ‘it is a great pity that Miss Austen never wrote a sequel to her seminal novel.' One day I was searching Kindle books and for the fun of it I entered “Pride and Prejudice Sequel’ into the search not expecting any results.

The rest is history. I discovered the JAFF community and books. I became a veracious reader of JAFF books and once I had devoured all of the sequels and continuations that I could find, I read my first variation. I had been resisting variations wrongly thinking that I would not enjoy them as much as the sequels. Boy, was I ever wrong! Today I am the proud owner of well over 1,000 JAFF novels that I have purchased on Amazon. 'A Change of Fortunes' is my first book that I wrote. There are a number of others on the way.

“Most people don’t care who’s in charge as long as someone is.” –Tanya Huff, Nights of the Round Table and Other Stories of heroic Fantasy

SPOILER ALERT: This review may contain *** SPOILERS ***

>>Rating: MA: mature, adult themes discussed, attempted violence, madness, hints at m/m love, death of more than one character
>>Angst Level: stressful as we look into the face of madness.
>>Tissue Alert: Yeah, have a tissue or two on hand. Whew!
>>Source: Borrowed KU 6-21-22 with no expectations of a review. The views and opinions expressed are my own. Book 5 in the Take Charge Series
>>Trope: Alternate Universe where our story changes when someone takes charge and changes their circumstances and that of those around them. Spineless Bingley Trope: this guy was NO prize. He was henpecked to the degree he couldn’t make any decisions without someone telling him what to do. It was pretty pathetic. Twins Trope: Louisa and Caroline were twins, a.k.a. the Terrible Twins.
>>Religious Element: There was a light reference to God. One of the characters prayed for a few more days of life. It was touching but not preachy. They acknowledged and were thankful for each new day they were granted and counted them as a blessing.

“Everything happens for a reason. Wait on God and trust in Him. He wants the best for us. He wants to take us from glory to glory, and from victory to victory.” –Germany Kent

Changes in this Alternate Universe: Jane and Kitty were the favorites because they look the most like their mother. Elizabeth, Mary, and Lydia were sensible, intelligent, and favored their grandmother Bennet. What?!? I know, that was so strange. Mrs. Bennet was horrid and she was training Kitty to be just like her. She wanted to dominate each of the girls and was frustrated when they refused to follow her training on how to catch a man. Only Kitty, her favorite, would listen. Even Lydia refused to adhere to her admonishments. That was rather refreshing to see a completely different side to Lydia. It was rather jarring at first. However, I get so tired of Lydia being a termagant that this twist was rather fun to read. There was also a character crossover from another of Austen’s books. I nearly fell out of my seat when I read it. OMG! That was so shocking. This story was really creative as conversations shifted and were delivered by different people and in different situations. It was always fun to see who would say what. I enjoyed this new take on our favorite P&P characters.

“The worst thing that can happen to you as a young person, is to refuse to grow up. You refuse to grow up when you believe that someone else must take responsibility for your life and life circumstances.” –Saidi Mdala, Know What Matters

The Bingley Terrible Twins were a nightmare and Bingley was a spineless tweeb. Poor Jane took his inconsistency hard but soon realized and accepted his defection. She soon had her own HEA. That was so cool. Mary Bennet came out of her shell. Mr. Collins was horrified to discover she was a hidden beauty like her elder sisters. He wondered why he never saw that while at Longbourn. He was such a toad. Poor Charlotte.

“Taking charge of our life reinforces our self-worth.” –Sam Owen, 500 Relationships And Life Quotes: Bite-Sized Advice For Busy People

Rosings Park: Everything changed when Anne de Bourgh took charge and changed everyone’s perspective and their outcome. HEA all around. That was fun to read. Meanwhile, Lady Catherine had a plan and just knew how it would be. She would soon have the wealth of Rosings and Pemberley at her fingertips. Oh, how she would lord it over everyone and take her revenge. As soon as her nephew arrived, she would enact her plan. Yes, it would work because she wanted it to and she always got what she wanted. Of course, you know what they say about best-laid plans. Yes, Lady Catherine was in for a big surprise and a rude awakening. Don’t make Mrs. Jenkinson go for her purse. Just saying.

Anne de Bourgh Takes Charge (Take Charge Series)

Another good story from Shana Granderson. It was wonderful to read a story where Anne, although health issues caused her body to be weaken, her mind was sharp as a tack, and she was able to run Rosings Park and more importantly outsmart her insane mother. She takes over the running of Rosings Park when she turns five and twenty per her father’s will, but allows her mother to remain at the big house as long as she follows Anne’s dictates. If I wasn’t able to read fo yself, I wouldn’t have believed the difference between Charles Bingley in this book to Bingley in the last book. In the book, Bingley Takes Charge, he had a spine of steel; however in this Charge book, he had the spine of a jellyfish. Besides having no spine at all, his sisters were twins, both having the unfortunate characteristics of Caroline Bingley portrayed in most variations: delusional, vain, grasping, ladder climbing shrews. Anne befriends Elizabeth Bennet when she visits Charlotte and before her cousins arrive for their yearly visit, Anne has set Elizabeth’s feelings about Darcy on its head, and tells her what Wickham really is. When the Darcys and the colonel arrive, Anne tells the colonel where he is and the colonel travels to Meryton to have him thrown into prison. In this book it’s Kitty that is Mrs. Bennet’s favorite daughter who takes after her, whereas Lydia follows her elder sisters. After the Bingley twins commit social suicide in London by infringing on Georgiana and her aunts, Bingley writes to beg for forgiveness so they can re-enter society. He’s told to come alone, but the Terrible Twins know he’s not serious so they convince their spineless brother to take them with him. When they enter Rosings the entire Fitzwilliam family and Bennets are waiting for them. Caroline cannot keep her mouth shut, insults Elizabeth while Louisa tries to compromise Darcy in front of everyone. When Lord Matlock finishes with them, the three have committed complete societal suicide that they need to leave the shores of England. Bingley sells everything he had in England and sails to New York City. Shortly after their arrival, the Terrible Twins convince him to invest in diamond mines found in the western region of America and he loses his entire fortune except 10,000£ he’s hidden from them. He finally separates himself from his two grasping sisters opening a general store whereas they had to go into service to survive. Mrs. Bennet defies Bennet and walks to her sister’s house early in the morning and is run over by a swiftly moving carriage, Wickham languishes in debtor’s prison, Lady Catherine completely goes insane and is sent to Bedlam, and Collins’ has an apoplexy when he insults the entire Fitzwilliam family with his not so bright pearls of wisdom, and dies leaving Charlotte a not so grieving widow. As the three oldest Bennet daughters marry, Charlotte marries their father and gifts him with twin sons and a sixth daughter. Through Anne’s love of Mrs. Jenkinson, Jenki becomes a loving grandmother figure to all of her adopted Bennet daughter’s families. I can hardly wait to open the next book.

This Pride and Prejudice variation starts with Elizabeth visiting Charlotte Collins at Hunsford and befriending a physical ill, but mentally strong Anne de Bourgh. How will this effect Darcy, the Fitzwilliams and the Bennets.
An entertaining variation. A re-read

Almost perfect!

Anne takes charge of her life and becomes involved with her friends and family members lives to the benefit of all. While her health never completely recovered, she's able to live longer than expected and to interact purposely with everyone. She becomes friends with Elizabeth and Charlotte, tried to tame Mr Collins, and provides for the successful continuance of Rosings by gifting it to Colonel Fitzwilliam. Effectively she saved both the estate and his life by giving him the opportunity to resign from the military.
Mr Collins is absolutely ridiculous in this story and has difficulty getting over being rejected by Elizabeth. Caroline Bingley manages to destroy her reputation and the entire family members reputation by her lies and social climbing attempts. Charles demonstrates his inability to be the leader, not reining in his sisters, and lost his friend Darcy.
I enjoyed reading this very much because its rare to have the focus on Anne. She's usually ignored by everyone because of her poor health and her inability to go against her mother. This Anne is great at interfering in the lives of her cousins in order to get them into relationships with women like Elizabeth and Mary Bennet who are perfect for them.
I'm hoping that we see more of this series - the other characters deserve to " take charge "!

Like so many of the books in this series, Anne de Bourgh Takes Charge (AdBTC) is full of errors. With as much as I enjoy the stories as a whole, it’s highly frustrating to be so distracted by the errors.

I enjoyed seeing more of Anne, especially a stronger Anne. She’s so often relegated to a footnote in the story, like with Pride and Prejudice when she could be much more, like she is in AdBTC.

I love the way the various couples came together in AdBTC. And having Anne as the center focus of it all was nice.

It was interesting to have twin Bingley sisters, as opposed to the older and younger of canon, but it worked well and they had a marvelous comeuppance. It’s a shame the Bingley sisters of canon didn’t suffer such a set down.

Once again, the amount of information in the epilogue was out of proportion to its length. It felt more like an information dump than a conclusion to the story.

Despite the issues, I enjoyed AdBTC. At this point, I would rate the series, in order of my preference: 1, 5, 3, 4, 2.

I loved it!

Call me a fish and real me in, I’m hooked. I love JAFF books, some more than others and these most of all. I love the ingenious way the dialog and characters from the original are worked into each book like little hidden gems that makes the reader grin in thrilled delight (well this reader anyway). I love how all the villainous, villains are promptly dealt with and held accountable for they’re vile deeds. And I love the romantic combinations. Excellent series.
The story is filled with contrivances and silly situations, but the book is so well written, and the story so cathartic, that you end up forgiving any little occurences that seem way too convenient.

Avid Reader

I loved the way Anne helped and encouraged the Bennet sisters to see reality, especially Elizabeth and Jane. Darcy was slow to see the truth, especially when it came to Bingley being his "puppy". Bingley '1 twin sisters were too much, and Mrs. Bennet was also another dense personality. The Colonel told his oldest brother that he might enjoy visiting Rosings after he had met Elizabeth and Jane. Lady Catherine 's true parentage came as a shock! Her lack of love for Anne was also a shock!

2.5 stars rounded up.

I had a hard time making myself finish this book. While I like the idea of Anne being more in control of her life - it just felt like SO MUCH was going on and packed into this story. Some of the side storylines became main storylines and could have easily been their own book instead. A bunch of good ideas that didn’t need to be crammed into one. If the author had written a story just about Lizzy, or Jane, or Mrs Bennett etc and really fleshed them out, they would have been great.

Emotional mixed with humor

I admit it was difficult to read. Spoilers: The Bennett family had some different/changes in some of the characters. Lydia being proper mind blowing! Kitty being Mrs Bennett’s favorite—what???—Mary bloomed. This is not a Jane reuniting with Bingley. There are twins.
What I Love about P&P is it’s a love story mixed with transformation and self discovery. Grandson continues this foundation in the story. I appreciate her consistency and creative variation she publishes.

Emotional funny clean

I found this to best the best of the series, so far in my opinion. I loved how different, I mean truly fantastically different this was. I loved how out spoken Anne De Bourg is and how she took charge. I loved how Bingley and siblings were set down; they were truly awful in this story. I loved how Lydia and Kitty switched roles in story. This was low anguish (very low), emotional, funny, cute and extremely clean. Highly recommended for anyone to read.

Anne de Bourgh takes charge

This has to be one of the best books that makes like Anne as a character. She comes alive and makes her life worth living given her childhood illnesses.
The author takes liberties that make the story so much more entertaining and fun. Although it’s a sad tale there are parts that made me laugh.
I love it.

Another great take charge story.

I just loved Anne in this story. She was a wonderful character. She was so strong, even though her body was so weak, and quite a character to look up to.
