So this one was hands down my favourite I enjoyed the first book in this series but this one was even better. This carry’s on with Shay O’Reagan kind of inheriting his cousin Jacks unwanted arranged marriage that his dad had originally schemed for. Emma Murphy is now his intended bride and she’s far from willing, she expected Jack but Shay is from the north and is a complete savage in her eyes.
So initially I found Emma quite unreasonable and irrational. She seemed to have a limited sense of overall self-preservation and especially considering she has grown up in this type of lifestyle so you’d think she’d be a bit more savvy and accepting.
straight from the start, Emma gets Shay’s back up with her open hostility and that only intensifies when he realises just who’s daughter he’s been set up to marry. Smelling a rat he packs up his bride and heads back north, both of them have others who want them dead so it's definitely not a match made in heaven.
These two may start out at loggerheads but what they do have is some explosive chemistry and it’s not long before Emma realises she has Shay all wrong. He also starts to feel very protective over the little red-headed spitfire in his charge.
This really was action-packed throughout much more so than the first book. Emma definitely grew on me and I liked Shay from the start even with all his violent tendencies and though he was far from perfect he wasn’t too proud to admit his mistakes either. He is a bit of a hothead for sure and temper wise these two are a definite match and the sparks were certainly flying here.
With all the scheming from uncle Liam and with him bringing his son and Jacks brother Richard back into the mix, I’m now incredibly intrigued to meet him and see just how this shakes things up here. I like this Irish mafia series a whole lot and will be picking up the next one in the series. I voluntary reviewed a copy of Mafia King (Young Irish Rebels #2).

𝐒𝐓𝐎𝐑𝐘: So I am walking into this really loving Mafia Prince, book one. As I am reading Mafia King, I found myself liking it but also not wowed by it. Personally for me, I think it’s the way the story played out that’s why I wasn’t wowed. This is my own shellfish reasons for just finding it likable, which isn’t a bad thing. Shay has gotten the leftovers as I would say, as Emma was originally promised to Jack, from book one, hence an arranged marriage between Emma and Shay. Shay came in open to this arranged marriage, Emma, not so much, she was so spicy and made life hell. This is what makes this a bumpy ride as Emma will not make this easy, especially when she wanted Jack. However, when the tides change and Emma comes around it was a nice read.
𝐂𝐇𝐄𝐌𝐈𝐒𝐓𝐑𝐘: Physical chemistry was to my liking, I definitely had no issues. Depending on what you like it can be pleasing.
𝐒𝐄𝐂𝐎𝐍𝐃𝐀𝐑𝐘 𝐂𝐇𝐀𝐑𝐀𝐂𝐓𝐄𝐑𝐒: We see Shay’s family, Jack and Liam and Emma’s family Noel, James and Mark. It seems Noel taught Emma quite a few things. There were others and I feel they all played their positions, making the story more appealing.
𝐎𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐥𝐥, for me likable, still a good addition to the series and I look forward to more from this series.
✰✰𝐓𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐠𝐞𝐫𝐬:
****I don’t equate these stories to real life. It’s about personal taste and what you would or want to tolerate with the books you read. I know we all have different opinions and preferences with what we read. I based my book reviews on my preferences and what I like, and while these preferences may not be the same for others, I hope this review was still helpful.
Shay is the embodiment of the broken, dark, anti-hero! Emma is the strong woman that may be able to make him whole. ***** Rating: 4 stars Steam: 3 flames Genre: Dark / Antihero / Mafia ***** I am not going to lie. Shay has his issues and there were times in the book that I questioned how Vi Carter could redeem Shay, he is angry, insufferable, and oh so broken. But by the end of the book, I fully understood Shay, his actions, and why he was the way he was.
Emma was raised to be the perfect mafia wife for Jack O'Reagan. Imagine her delight when the day finally comes, and Jack's father is meeting with her father. It's going to happen FINALLY; she will marry Jack O'Reagan. But wait, we read book one, so we know that Jack already found his someone…uh oh!
Emma is about to find out that her dream of marrying Jack is over and instead she is marrying Shay O'Reagan, a Northerner. Oh goodness, Southerner's (Emma's family) hate Northerner's and vice versa. What kind of devious plans are afoot?
Shay has been consumed with vengeance. Cage fighting is how he dulls the pain and causes it but when he is told that in order to gain a seat in the South, he must wed, he is willing to wed. Anything, to finally unite the North and South.
Mafia King is full of lies, betrayals, and deceit. The story of Emma and Shay is not easy, and I will be honest there was one point in the book where I HATED Shay and I hoped that Emma would run. At that one point, I felt there was no hope for Shay, but slowly the secrets are revealed, the story unfolds, and the chemistry between Emma and Shay begins to grow.
Emma is a strong young woman with a stiff spine. She may be a little naïve at times, but she learns fast, and she knows how to handle herself and eventually how to handle Shay.
This story is a dark read with disturbing content. If that is not your thing, turn back now. Mafia King is also full of suspense, twist and turns, steam and treachery that knows no bounds. Sometimes you can't tell who is good, and who is bad. I think all the characters are both at some point. This is an intriguingly dark read and I can't wait for more of the Young Irish Rebels.
Emma Murphy thought she was going to marry one man that she was excited for to only find out that her father made an arrangement with someone that she absolutely has no desire to marry. He’s Shay O’Reagan from the North. Emma hates northerners with a burning passion and boy does Emma have no fear and showing her distaste for her new fiancé. Emma definitely speaks her mind and she is no delicate flower. She is a fiery redhead who speaks her truth and definitely will not submit to anyone easily. I mean the girl knows how to make homemade bombs. Lol
For Shay, this marriage is simply a business transaction. He really doesn’t have any feelings towards his new fiancé other than he thinks that she looks like a damn child. And a nuisance. He actually ends up locking her in a wardrobe. 😆 Shay is on a mission to seek revenge for his brother who was horribly murdered for a really sad and upsetting reason. A huge chunk of this book is him wanting to seek vengeance on the people who allowed the death of his brother.
Throughout all this drama there’s a very slow burn romance that happens with Shay and Emma. And they have to decide if they want to continue on with this relationship as it being fake or real. And along the way their feelings end up becoming real for each other. “You’re a red-headed beauty. “Her eyes widen before they fill with a want that I would do anything to fill. “You’re a dark King.“ She whispers back; she doesn’t smile or make a joke of her words”
If you like Irish mafia, Arranged marriage, Forced marriage, Tons of action and drama, Alpha male, Sassy female. This book of the series has it all. It leaves off on a HEA for this couple. But also opens up for the next book and you find out who’s story it’ll be!
This was so confusing and so wordy. It just was an awful read. I can tell I am going to be in the minority here. How many times can everyone backstab each other? They are supposed to be family. Also if you lock me in a wardrobe all night it would not make me want to give you a blow job. Oh and if you tried to choke the crap out of me I wouldn’t give you my virginity. Yes it happens.
Not for me. Done reading this series.
Received a copy from BookSprout for an honest review,
The story continues and it's Shay's turn. This was a slow burn for sure and a quite eventful book BUT I need answers for several of the issues that arise during the story... I feel a little disappointed even if I enjoyed the story.
Absolute rubbish! This author is spewing absolute rubbish in this book about a country/situation she clearly has no understanding of. This book is an absolute mess. Just to make it simple author, the Troubles were the Irish both North and South in Ireland being against the British occupation of the North.
The Troubles were not/are not between the people in North of Ireland and those in the South of Ireland, like you have written here. I can't believe the author didn't catch on to the fact there was a big problem with what she was writing when typed that the hero's father is in the Ra, (Irish Republican Army), and the heroine's father is in the Ra, or when she re-read that during her edits.
Because clearly the fact both men were in the Ra, the Irish Republican Army, obviously means they're both in the same organisation, both allies, who believe themselves Irish, hence why they're in the Irish Republican Army. It doesn't matter if one of them is from the North and the other is from the South, like I explained above, because the conflict was/is between the Irish and the British.
Then, the next big problem, please if reading this book do not believe the author's ridiculous claim that people get killed just because they travel from North to South Ireland or vice versa. Even during the height of the Troubles in this country people were not killed if they came North or went South, they always did and do daily to back and forth yo go to work, university, to visit and stay with friends/ family, shopping, etc.
So, the author claiming that the heroine, a Southern girl, would be killed if she went North, is utter rubbish. It does not happen and is disgraceful of the author to spread that malicious lie and fear about a country to readers. I understand this is a fictional romance but it's not to create fiction the author wrote that, it's her ignorance and lack of understanding of the country she's decided to write about, without taking 5 minutes to Google it to get the correct information.
Moving on to my review of the rest of the story, it's extremely boring, I gave up halfway through the book. There's no depth, no excitement, just an utter mess of wrong information about a place the author insists on writing about, yet she hasn't even bothered to take 5 minutes to Google for the correct information on the country/situation. Oh, and FYI, Ms Carter, they aren't called Mafia here either! And they don't marry the enemy here to create blood ties like you've written either, just more proof you have no understanding of the situation you've written about. 1 star.
And the heat is on! Wow, is this series taking wild and wooly turns. This is mafia romance, after all, so I expected the grit and the violence, even the twisty turns but this is going to a whole new level. Family is sacred but what happens when they are the betrayers? What happens when you don’t know who to trust? Well, in this case for sure, you take one careful step at a time.
Shay is the interloper but there are plans to bring him closer to the fold and Emma is that ticket. Whether she wants to go is beside the point but where does that leave these two? An arranged marriage with lots of family but no love? Trust is everything and they have none at the beginning. Emma had nowhere to turn and Shay was going to have to be her champion – whether he wanted that title or not. Shay was stinging from trust misplaced and she was going to bear the brunt of it. How did they dig out of that horrible place? One hard-fought step at a time…
Their story only amped up the suspicion and the tension in this family-centered drama. Their characters, and those around them, were not black and white but had more layers than the tallest birthday cake. Lies, betrayal – they were all here but Emma and Shay found their place – alongside each other.
There is more come, with lots of questions still to answer. Someone was going to pay but who would rack up the highest bill? I can’t wait to find out! ~Diane, 4 stars
2.5 stars The ending of book 1 bleeds into this book enough that it isn't a good stand-alone, but it could be read as one, if the reader doesn't mind some confusion, because the way the hero of this book is entrenched into this mafia world is confusing enough. The hero, Shay, is an O’Reagan, of the O'Reagan power family, except he is from the North. Jack, the hero of the first book is from the O'Reagans of the South, led by Liam O'Reagan, Jack's ruthless dad, a boss who everyone is wary of, but a boss with a lot of power. With a sort of alliance with Jack, Shay has agreed to "join" families in a more equitable share of power in Ireland, only Liam is not too happy about the young mafia princes' ideas, but he has to go along with it due to Shay's knowledge of some pretty damning secrets.
Then Shay is promised marriage to Emma Murphy. Unbeknownst to Shay, Emma is supposed to be getting married to Jack, and of course Jack can't marry her because no way would he leave Maeve (love story from the first book). Unfortunately, neither Emma nor Shay knows about the switcheroo, so their first meeting is full of shock and volatility; shock because neither is what each other expected, physically; and volatility because Shay is a hated northerner who Emma's family has a strong animosity for. Plus, she and her family distrust Liam O'Reagan even more for pawning Emma off on Shay and his family, who have a less than savory side.
Suffice to say, no one is pleased and secret plots to un-alive people ensue. Meanwhile, Shay has decided despite their families' rancor, Emma is his, and he does not intend to give her up. He also intends to force a new power structure to happen.
As she falls for him, Emma not only finds out how ruthless he is but also how hypocritical her own family are in their dealings.
Bottom line, it is a mafia world, and Emma, despite dreaming of being a mafia wife, quickly discovers her naiveness ... it is definitely not about hosting parties and decorating. This one gets 3 stars because I like this mafia world and my interest was kept for the most part. However, Shay and Emma did not move me as a couple, with their love story, not as much as Jack and Maeve held my interest in the first book. Also, Emma did some stupid shit that I could not get over. She was reckless for no damn reason. And Shay ticked my nerves too because he has a whole vigilante side-plot, in getting revenge on who killed his brother, but while he is doing that, he is leaving Emma vulnerable, leaving his mother vulnerable, and leaving too much out there for his enemies to exploit. He is savage in his killings but less calculating in his planning. He is protective of Emma to an extent but his questionable moves and how he physically handles her in some parts resulted in him not being that great of a hero for me.
The overarching plot continues in this book, but the culmination is confusing, as there is no real fruition to why Shay had followed his path in the first place.
This might be one of those cases where the series started off pretty good for me, and then the second book does a good job of making me question whether I should continue the series.
So this was a hit/miss for me. I really didn't like Emma. In her chapters, she acted like a toddler that wasn't getting her way. It wasn't until maybe halfway through she started to get better for me.
Shay is broken. He's trying to find the people that were responsible for killing his brother. I never really looked at him as that awful.
These books are really confusing at times with King of the North/South. There are so many changes that it's starting to get hard to keep track of.
Another fantastic addition to the series! This was Shay's story and boy did he show a lot more to us in this one. He's still alpha, ruthless but shows a little more caring side that I loved! Our heroine Emma is feisty and strong and I loved that about her. Together they were explosive, both when they liked each other and didn't like each other lol. The story was drama and action packed and left a happy ending but with a touch of mystery for the next one.
The story moved at a good pace. I was never bored. Also it included some sexy times.
While Emma, the heroine, was immature I couldn't help but feel sorry for her. People in her life treated her poor including her parents, the hero Shay and the Shay's father. She was treated like property and basically given away to Shay. The only one who had her back and was nice to her was her brother.
I didn't like Shay. He had little control over his temper and killed without much remorse. He was rude and crude and smoked like a chimney. Throughout the majority of the story he treated Shay poorly. He made rude comments to her and had a habit of leaving her in places where she didn't know anyone. Right after he took her v-card he walked out of the room, not giving her any comfort. Emma felt used.
The only things that I liked about Shay was that he didn't cheat on Emma, didn't have sex with OW after meeting her and by the end of the story told her that he loved her.
The ending was a HFN which I was fine with because this book is part of a series. I will be reading another book in the series.

Wow....what a story! I really love a good arranged marriage mafia storyline and this one ticked all the boxes for me!! Shay is not your typical Irish Mafia guy, hes more rough around the edges. Hes secretive, controlling and super HOT and doesn't play bu the usual mafia rules!! As for Emma, she is a typical bratty 18 year old, not at all what Shay is expecting and to be honest not my usual type of heroine, however she has this vulnerability and personality that grows on you as the plot progresses and you cant help but love her by the end! There were some very comical moments when they first meet that did have me laughing out loud, their banter, arguments and chemistry was just brilliantly written!! I cant wait to read Richards story as i think his is going to be even darker and more intense!!
I received an ARC from the author and this is my honest review.
Book: Mafia King Read By: Ebook and Audio Author: Vi Carter Genre: Mafia, Romance Main Characters: Shay and Emma Recommend: Yes Spice: 🌶️️ 🌶️️ 🌶️️ Age recommendation: 18-30+ Years My feelings:
I am so in love with this series.
“I’m a ‘Cash Cow’, and now you're my highly valued bull.” She isn’t smiling.”
The main Mcs are all so dark and loveable.
“I’m sorry, Emma.” His words are low, his breath fans across my cheek. His apology blurs my vision, and it almost breaks me. “I’ll never hurt you again.”
The only issue I have is they start out slow. That’s it, I also feel like the end ids don’t give me enough of an ending. I need more from the couple. Other then that leaving me wanting a book 2.5 heheh these are great!
“His lips brush mine, and I sink against him, but he holds me back slightly. “The next time you have a knife at my neck, you use it.” He releases me and steps away.”
Book 2 follows Shay on his adventure into an arranged marriage. He is marrying a girl from a different part of Ireland. A part that hates his side and vice versa.
“Don’t ever hesitate.” His words are stronger, louder, and angrier. “You run that blade across the throat and put as much pressure as you can behind it.”
Shay and Emma fight, cry, abuse and even have a lot of steamy chapters while working out this issue they have found themselves in. But along the way they fall in love with each other and get married and have a HEA.
“I press a kiss to her lips. It’s meant to be a goodbye kiss, so for the first time with Emma; I don’t hold back. I kiss the woman I’ve fallen in love with. The knowledge has me breaking the kiss and looking into her eyes. I hadn’t seen it, but now that I’m losing her, I do. I love everything about her.”

3.5 stars - Emma Murphy and Shay O’Reagan shouldn't be anywhere near each other as their loved ones keep trying to... interfere in potentially deadly ways. Yeah, all very "unwelcome to the family" acts.
For the most part, I liked this book, but there were times when I got lost, feeling like some things that should've been spelled out were skipped or skimmed over. Also, the chemistry was there. It just wasn't burning bright for me. It was more of a low flicker that had potential that wasn't realized in these pages.
Shay: “I have some things to take care of, so you make yourself cushy, love.”
Emma: “I will never be cushy with the likes of you.”
Despite how he is with Shay's mom, Ava, I was unimpressed with his father, Connor. It's beyond surprising that he still talks to his da after the things he pulled. Seriously, it's messed up.
One storyline that I would've liked to see find a conclusion was what happened to Frankie. Or rather, by who's order did it happen. Maybe it comes to light in a later book? Even if the answer is yes, I'm still not happy about it.
The ending brings with it an ominous outlook for our next anti-hero. Let's see what Richard has to say for himself.
I dunno with this one, on one hand I enjoyed it cos it was an Irish mafia story, yet on the other it irked me. Our FMC Emma, is the daughter of the southern mafia boss who is in an arranged marriage with the son of the northern boss. This in itself is a starter for what can/does go wrong. She by her own admission was brought up leaning how to defend herself, she makes a home made 💣 within the first part of the book, enters a cage fight and uses a knife…then it all goes astray 🤷🏻♀️ She acts like a whiny, tantrum throwing child, where did all that fight go, she clings to him like she is a koala unable to protect itself. This theme kind of follows through the book. He on the other hand, is strong, brash, has a rage like no other and is reckless. However, he does fall for her and in fact a few times pushes her to let her fire out but also protects her.
Overall, it’s an entertaining mafia read not sure I will read the others though.
Heartbreaking, gutwrenching, tragic, maddening, overwhelming and simply beautiful. These are just a few words that I would use to describe Mafia King. It seems at every turn I was getting utterly pi*s^d at the men in this book and then it took another turn and I fell in love with them, ok, at least some of them. Emma Murphy and Shay O'Reagan have a tumultuous journey. It's danger around every corner. But somewhere in the midst of all of this chaos and mayhem they find love. This book is so, so compelling and had me totally captivated with each and every page. I completely LOVE this book and am looking forward to the next by this author.
This was my first Vi Carter audiobook and I was hooked from start to finish. The story was so captivating and the narration was wonderful. It took some getting use to at first but the narrators did a great job with the emotions of each character. Mafia King is book two in the Young Irish Rebels series. It features Emma and Shay who are in an arranged marriage by their families only to find out they were pawns in a much bigger mafia game. This story is full of intense chemistry, violence, action, and shocking twists & turns you don’t see coming. I loved Emma & Shay’s relationship going from enemies to lovers. The whole story was intriguing and definitely made want to keep listening.
This is the second book in the series but could be read as a stand alone if you like. We don't see much of the first couple in this book so their story doesn't really play in to the action here. If you are keeping track, Shay is the dark cousin of Liam and lives in the North with his dad. He has taken over for his dad as King of the North.
This book is a bit more dark than the first I think. As far as arranged marriage goes, it is pretty typical Mafia operations. However, Emma is a spitfire. The more she fights, the more Shay comes to respect her.
Lots of fighting and subterfuge going on in this one. A bit of a twist in the whole story arc of 4 kings ruling the south. Looking forward to meeting Richard and seeing where his story takes this family.
*Complimentary copy provided for an honest review.
Nobody writes irish mafia like Vi Carter, I really liked jacks book but Shay and Emma top it. I haven't been able to put this down, so many twists and shady characters. Liam being his normal self still gives me a chill just from being on a page, that's how good Vi is at making these characters real, I really am scared of Liam and was worried for Emma when he was around. I'm completely in love with Shay and can't wait for the next book to get more of him and to meet Richard .... I think I'm going to be petrified of him .
MAFIA KING is the kind of story where you are drawn to the pulse pounding suspense but love Shay and Emma because they know how to bring the reader in, make them feel part of the craziness forthcoming and love their attitudes.
They perfect the other. I read this one in one sitting. I will tell you that it's a perfectly dark arrangement where the deep is impressive as heck. I can't find a flaw. It's too good!!! I received an ARC for an honest and voluntarily review.
Triggers Involved : Hero nearly Squeezes the h to death
Plot Summary : Emma was all set to marry the man who had been chosen for her and she was very excited to do so. Until her family changed the plans and ended up giving her to the only man she despised. Shay was the northern man and there was no way she would marry him willingly. He was everything she hated and now she was stuck with him.
Shay had been told that his wife would be Willing. But one look at her raging face and her innumerable attempts to run away, he got the hint that willing was the last thing she would ever be. Emma cultivated him in the worst way possible and there was no way he was letting her go. She has a purpose and she was going to fulfill that willingly or unwillingly.
Overall Opinion : I have been waiting for this story since I have read the first book. Shay captivated me and I really wanted to read his book! Shay and Emma were pure fire and I loved reading about them together. Emma had a lot of fight in her and that was something I could appreciate.
Both of them were like fire and water and they did not get together no matter what. That did not mean that they did not have any chemistry. Their path was not easy and it gave me immense pleasure to see them struggle through it all and make out in the end! This one was a one time read for me as there were a few scenes where the characters irritated the hell out of me. I would recommend this to all the hardcore mafia Romance lovers!
Shay made a deal with Liam that he would go into an arranged marriage. He wasn't happy about it but it had to be done in order to become a king. Emma was upset that she wouldn't be marrying Jack but instead a Northerner. They were known to be ruthless and cruel. An arranged marriage she had to get out of somehow. Emma's brother always said she was "like a donkey walking backwards". Strong and stubborn. Obstacles are thrown in Shay and Emma's path putting them in danger from behind the scenes of the Kings. Action packed drama, suspense, betrayal and steamy scenes.
Maybe it's the Irish or maybe the Mafia or a combination of it all, but I love this series! Shay is beyond a dark Fudger, but man I loved his character. And Emma is a good balance for him. Sassy and adventurous to a point but gentle also. I have a feeling Richard is going to make Shay look like a pussy cat!
Wowowooww!!! I want Shay in my life he is KING!!!!! His personality his looks he is a brilliant character!!! I couldn't stop reading I wanted more. The story was steamy action packed and I cant wait for the next one 5*
This is the 2nd book in the series and should have read the first book because the Irish Mäfia politics in this one we’re slightly confusing for me and I blame that on me not reading the first one and not on the author.
Classic arranged marriage enemies to lovers. The FMC was slightly annoying as 80% generally are in these books. I dont know…..I’m not in a rush to finish the series so yeah.
Mafia King it's the second installment in the Young Irish Rebels series, an imposed arrangement between the 'Northerner' Shay O'Reagan and 'Southerner' Emma Murphy. Just the perspective of a forced marriage and the fact that Shay had considered it, had me biting my nails since Mafia Prince and this account does not disappoint: Shay's mind is open to every solution to have a seat in the South, trying at the same time to keep the North unattainable to Liam's reach. For Emma it would be the opportunity to be free and wanted and live for herself with a catch of a partner - not Shay! I loved how Vi Carter worked the couple's relationship: it was a very smooth development, but you could early see how enticed they were with each other and what was supposed to be a business negotiation, started to make sense in their bodies🔥🔥🔥, hearts and souls 😍😍😍. Even trying to maintain a distance, their jealousy was palpable and so was protectiveness. Vi Carter delivers a engrossing and intertwined narrative with serious conflicts and personal agendas. It's all about lies, deceit, failed agreements, wavering liasons and fragile deals, showing the author's uncanny ability to keep the mystery going and live and the reader guessing. It's the O'Reagan's. It's the Mob ways... It was a great read! In the end..... the sureness of Richard O'Reagan.....
I received an ARC and this is my voluntary and honest review. All opinions are my own.
