I loved the setting of the El Tovar Hotel at the Grand Canyon. Ruth Anniston survives a mauling by a mountain lion it leaves her scarred and she feels unworthy and think people pity her. Working as a Harvey girl she has risen in the ranks from serving girl to head of the waitresses and kitchen staff. She is now able to work behind the scenes where others don't see her and pity her as she believes they do. She is angry, bitter and scared. I enjoyed how each books takes place at the Grand Canyon and involves the Harvey girls but revolves around a different story. I can just imagine the El Tovar Hotel in its heyday. It sounds like it was amazing and the Harvey girls so friendly and charming. It would have been such a joy to dine there. The author does an amazing job of combining fact and fiction with all of her well researched books. The trials and tribulations the characters go through, some quite a bit more than others kept me reading trying to guess who was responsible and why it was happening. A slow burn romance, suspense, love, hope, realization, seeing self-worth, faith realized and more kept me flipping through the pages. Though I am sorry to see this series end, I really enjoyed my time with the Harvey Girls, I am eagerly looking forward to the next book by this author.

This final book is set two years after the prior book and I’ve so been looking forward to reading Ruth & Frank’s story! Frank is such a good guy. He’s fantastic in the prior books, but he really shines in this book. A male lead that encourages the main girl in her faith is something I always love to see. I would have liked to see a bit more of him and his thoughts outside of Ruth and being a chef, but it was still really good to see more of them both.
There’s a slight mystery in this book, but we are quickly told who the culprit is in the story (by seeing their point of view). So rather than a “let’s find the culprit who’s stealing from the hotel” it’s a “let’s see how well our main characters do finding the culprit that’s stealing from the hotel”. I was a little bit disappointed that it was the second one, instead of the first, but I quickly got over that and wanted to see what would happen.
I will say that the con-man was so annoying! I do wish that that part was handled quicker, but it made sense at the end. The ending was a bit rushed and more telling than showing (which I’ve fussed about with other books), but it was still a good conclusion to the series. The faith content is what really made this series stand out and I appreciate how clean it was throughout the series. It would be a series I would have no problem recommending to girls around ages 14/15, depending on the girl.
“Don’t put limits on God, Ruth. His timing is always perfect.”
What a wonderful book! It’s a shame I hadn’t read books 1 and 2 in the series, but despite my oversight, I didn’t struggle to enjoy this book. Once I discovered my mistake, I Googled the setting so that I could appreciate the book better. I always know that if I can visualize it, the book can run like a movie in my head while I’m reading. The El Tovar Grand Canyon Hotel must have been an amazing place to be in the early 1900s. Woodhouse’s book does it justice.
Despite coming in late to the series, I instantly fell in love with the characters. They were relatable people in the process of overcoming what would seem to be insurmountable circumstances and were open enough to discover things about themselves that they might not have had the chance to if circumstances were different. Woodhouse wrote to showcase God’s divine plan through the experiences of her characters. It brought me to tears how much I identified with Ruth Anniston. I felt her angst at questioning God, her hopelessness at feeling ‘stuck’ in life, her guilt at feeling impatient with God and her disappointment that her pride had stepped in between her and God. I felt her struggle in every chapter. It really hit home when I read about her struggles with being ‘normal’ and how it takes on a different meaning depending on what circumstance we find ourselves in. What I appreciated the most was that when things got difficult for Ruth, it caused her to delve deeper into God’s love. We could all learn a lesson from this. If we could only have the foresight and understanding that we can leave it in His hands and allow Him to take away all the hurt and our struggles and turn it into something beautiful!
Woodhouse’s exploration of the history and culture of the area and times was fantastic and led me to Google to find out more about the Harvey House empire.
I loved the title and how it ties together Ruth’s accident and God’s love.
This wonderful story captivated, entertained, inspired, and convicted me and I can’t wait to tell others about it.
I was gifted this copy by Bethany House and NetGalley and was under no obligation to provide a review.
This was a beautiful story to begin the year with. I've been looking forward to Ruth's story since Book One, and it did not disappoint! I thoroughly enjoyed yet another trip to the Grand Canyon and the world of the Harvey Girls. Each one of Kimberley's books has been a blessing in that I've needed to learn some lessons alongside the characters, and this was no exception. I'm grateful for the openly Christian approach to these characters and their dilemmas, and the way their faith is so intricate to their healing. While their struggles may be dressed up in smart Harvey uniforms and covered with an early-1900s charm, they are relatable, and so the resolution feels attainable today.
A gently written story with a message full of hope. I wish this wasn't the end of the series!
[I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher. I was not required to provide a positive review. All opinions expressed are mine alone.]
An amazing finale to one of my favorite series! I have loved every minute of the series, from its great characters to the gorgeous setting, to the mystery element in each story. I have been waiting for Ruth's story, and it was even better than I hoped. Her relationship with Frank made for a fun read for me and her struggles from the events of book two, were real and relatable. After some rough spots in my life over the last couple year, I could definitely relate to Ruth. This was a fantastic read for me and without a doubt my favorite of the series. A wonderful read!
I received a copy from the author and also purchased my own Audible copy. All thoughts are my own.
What a joy to return to the El Tovar Hotel located at the Grand Canyon. It's such a unique setting with its stunning scenery, remote location and the presence of Harvey Girls. I love that the heroine of this last in the series is "older" at 35. After physical injury leaves Ruth feeling no longer pretty nor as useful as she used to be, she struggles to come out depression. Meanwhile chef Frank is in love with her and can't seem to find the right timing to let her know.
Someone or a group of nefarious characters is targeting the El Tovar and mysterious bad things keep happening. Ruth and Frank work with the hotel manager to figure out what is happening and who is behind the bad deeds.
Nice conclusion to the series. My gratitude to publisher Bethany House for a complimentary copy of the novel. I was not required to post a review and all opinions expressed are my own.
What a stunning conclusion to The Secrets of the Canyon series that keeps you on pins and needles. I have enjoyed this series so much but this is my favorite as I wanted Ruth to have her own story especially after her injuries. I loved the setting of the El Tovar at the Grand Canyon and learning the history behind how they ran such an elaborate hotel in the 1800’s. It is almost beyond comprehension. The novel makes you feel like you are actually experiencing the sights and sounds. I especially loved how Ms Woodhouse weaves mysterious characters and mishaps into the story to keep your attention while Ruth struggles with her faith and finding romance in the midst of her storm. It is well researched and brings the Harvey Girls duties and life into perspective. A perfectly well rounded reading experience that brings a satisfying conclusion. A must read for your 2023 TBR list. I received a complimentary copy from the author/publisher. The honest review and opinions are my own and were not required.
Trouble upon trouble chases Ruth and Frank and the other workers at El Tovar, the flagship resort of the Fred Harvey chain. Ms. Woodhouse took a real instance and crafted an interesting story about someone seeking revenge on Fred Harvey through his most famous jewel: El Tovar. The descriptions put me right on the edge of the beautiful canyon. “The canyon below deepened into a dark rusty color in the shadows and lit up like gold where the sun still caressed its ridges and folds.” The villains were crafty and tested the protagonists to the limit. But Ruth, Frank and manager, Mr. Owens are not ones to let problems stop them. Not only are they dealing with evil, but Ruth is healing from a mountain lion attack that left her with scars, real and internal. Frank, her best friend, tries to help her heal. He is a long suffering suitor who hesitates to tell her how he really feels. But as usual God’s timing is perfect. Ruth has many friends who help her see that God and His grace alone are what she needs to take to heart, to look beyond the superficial. I loved the idea portrayed that Jesus was perfect but He still bears scars as a Mark of Grace. *I received a complimentary copy of this book from Bethany House on behalf of the author. I was not required to post a favorable review. All opinions are my own.*
Secrets of the Canyon has been such an enjoyable series and this book is a fantastic way to end it! Kimberley Woodhouse gives Harvey Girl Ruth Anniston her own story and we are allowed another visit to the famous El Tovar Hotel and the Grand Canyon as it was in the early 1900s. A Mark of Grace is filled with drama, suspense, and romance, but there's also a beautiful faith message woven into the fascinating historical plot. Ruth's reluctance to accept help reminds us that we've all been guilty of rejecting both human and spiritual help, and it's only through our trust, faith, and total acceptance that we can experience amazing grace. I was especially touched by Woodhouse's eloquent suggestion that any scars that we carry are nothing compared to those of Jesus Christ!
I highly recommend A Mark of Grace to all who enjoy historical Christian fiction. It's a book that I didn't want to end and it's part of a series that I will definitely read again!
I received a free copy from Bethany House but a favorable review was never required. These thoughts and opinions are my own.
I have been waiting for Ruth’s story since book one in Kimberley Woodhouse’s Secrets of the Canyon series, and it’s here in A Mark of Grace.
While the author gives readers a mystery to solve and a romance to root for, my favorite part of Ruth’s story is her faith struggle. In the past books, Ruth has been a mentor and counselor for the Harvey Girls who work at the El Tovar, but it doesn’t mean she won’t have a crisis of faith herself.
Step back in time to the opulence of the El Tovar Hotel, the beauty of the Grand Canyon, and friendships, faith, and love that has bloomed to overflowing. Woodhouse ends this series in the best way possible.
Disclosure statement: I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book and was not required to write a positive or negative review. All opinions are my own.
"A Mark of Grace" is a Christian romance set in 1909 at the Grand Canyon. This is the third book in the series. You can understand this book without reading the previous stories, but these characters exist in the previous novels so you'll better understand them if you read the series in order.
Historical details about what the Grand Canyon and the Harvey Girls were like at that time were woven into the story and brought the story to life. The main characters were complex, likable, and reacted realistically to events. Someone's trying to ruin the El Tovar's reputation, which would cause Ruth and Frank to lose their dream jobs. They're the only ones that their boss trusts enough to help solve who's involved.
Ruth didn't think she cared that she was beautiful until scars marred her face and limited her ability to walk smoothly. Now she won't believe Frank that her facial scars have healed to barely visible and that she's beautiful inside and out to him. She allowed bitterness to fester inside and pride to isolate her, so she's an easy mark when a fancy conman offered her expensive remedies to fix the scarring. Frank did what he could to encourage and help her. He wanted her to understand that she can chose to view her scars as marks of God's grace in that she lived.
Ruth and Frank were both believers who read the Bible. Frank pointed out how Jesus has scars from the cross and isn't ashamed of them. Ruth got her scars when saving another's life. There was no sex or bad language. Overall, I recommend this enjoyable historical romance.
I received an ebook review copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley.
"...she wanted to head out on her own. Try something new. Experience life outside of the sheltered cocoon she'd always lived within." This begins Kimberly Woodhouse's third book in the Secrets of the Canyon Series. A Mark of Grace follows Ruth as she fights to recover from a horrific animal attack that leaves deep scars not only on her physical person but deep in her heart and mind as well. Her identity as a Harvey Girl and head waitress are in jeopardy and although there is still a place for her at the El Tovar Hotel she struggles to fit in and feel useful. Woodhouse encapsulates the human desire to feel useful and worthy in her character of Ruth. Many support characters help Ruth realize that grace is for everyone - Grace plus nothing. Meanwhile, as Ruth moves through her trial and learns the lesson of grace, an enemy has taken the El Tovar in its clutches, determined to ruin the Harvey reputation and bring down the Harvey empire. Ruth, her close friend Frank and the hotel manager Mr. Owen work together to sort the problem and rescue the hotel from ruin. In the process Ruth finds her way with a new attitude towards life post injury and towards love. Readers will not be disappointed with Ruth's story. Another win for Kimberly Woodhouse for sure. I received an advanced copy from BethanyHouse although the thoughts and opinions are my own and freely given.
I thought this was the perfect storyline to finish out the series! I really enjoyed learning about Ruth, her story and her help in saving the Harvey empire. These are all such great reads and I learned a lot as well. Ruth is still healing from her injury when all havoc breaks loose at the El Tovar Hotel. She has taken on a lot and now she is asked to try and help get to the bottom of what is happening. Money has begun to disappear, food count and receipts are not lining up, patrons are getting sick, and there are some shady auditors hanging around the hotel. Everyone is on edge and Ruth feels she must work day and night to get to the bottom of what is happening before things get even worse. Someone is leaking all of this information to the newspapers and they are losing business fast as well. Something or someone is behind this all and she puts her head down, and does all she can to work with Frank and Mr. Owen's. Ruth, being pulled in every direction knows that God doesn't give us more than we can handle and often there is a lesson to be learned in all this, so with the help of Frank's wisdom and their sleuthing the two work to try and save El Tovar and find out what the real reason is behind all of this. Thank you to the author for the free novel and allowing me to be on the launch team. I have loved all three books in this series!
What a great conclusion to this series! It was great to return to the Grand Canyon to the El Tovar Hotel. Mrs. Woodhouse once more paints such a picturesque scenery that you feel like you are right there with these characters seeing all the beauty that they see. I enjoyed being back with the Harvey girls and seeing Ruth's story unfold. Her journey to find who she really was great and I really liked how her friends help her see beyond the superficial and rely on God who looks beyond all of that and focuses on the heart.
The love interest Frank was great and at times I felt bad for him. I just wanted him to scream at the top of his lungs how he felt about Ruth but everything was perfect as it usually is in God's timing.
There is plenty to read in this book. Not only the characters transformation and faith journey but there is also some action and twists I wasn't expecting. Definitely a great read and I highly recommend the whole series!
I received a copy of this book from the author. I was not required to post a positive review. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.
“Grace plus nothing.” “Count it all joy no matter what comes.”
There are not enough words to describe the magnificent story found in A Mark of Grace by Kimberley Woodhouse. This is the conclusion to the Secrets of the Canyon series, which I would encourage readers to read A Deep Divide and A Gem of Truth prior to reading book three even though it can be read as a standalone.
This is Ruth’s and Chef Frank’s story. Ruth and Frank had new roles with their manager trusting them to assist him to solve the devastating happenings at the El Tovar Hotel at the Grand Canyon. The picturesque scenes, descriptive words, amazing characters within this tale contained everything that made this a superb read. There is mystery, history, romance, a gentle faith message that spoke volumes that it is God’s grace plus nothing to live a life filled with grace. Fans of Christian historical and romance fiction will not want to miss reading this series.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from Bethany House Publishers without any obligation to write a positive review. I have expressed my own opinion.
I enjoyed the first two books in this series so I was excited to read A Mark of Grace, and return to the beautiful Grand Canyon and El Tovar. I very much enjoyed this one too. The story is a wonderful mix of history, romance, and suspense. I felt like I was on an emotional roller coaster. Ruth’s story is a beautiful telling of someone who feels unlovable after suffering an attack that left her physically and emotionally scarred, then finally realizing that she is indeed worthy to be loved.
My favorite quote from the story: "It's like trying to count the stars. We can't do it. I think the part that is unfathomable is that we want to do something for it. To somehow earn God's favor. So that we feel worthy. Because we are unworthy until... His grace. And it's completely and utterly by His grace alone. That any of us are here. That we are breathing. That we have the chance at eternity with Him."
Bravo, Kimberley Woodhouse!
I received a free copy of this book from the publisher. I was not required to leave a review. All thoughts and opinions are mine.
Having read the first two in the Secrets of the Canyon series (A Deep Divide and A Gem of Truth), I highly anticipated A Mark of Grace. I was not disappointed.
Seeing the struggle of Ruth following her injury in A Gem of Truth and seeing her realize how she had withdrawn within herself made me see how easy a trap it is to fall into.
Ruth continuously struggles with God's Grace but reconciles herself that it is 'grace.....plus nothing'.
I was thrilled that since this was the final in the series that an epilogue was included. Don't we always want to know "and then what happened in the future"?
I received a free copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.
Ruth Anniston had been "in control at all times. An example to all the girls under her. Mother hen. Mentor. Friend." She had been the head waitress at the famous El Tovar Hotel for years. She had also thrown herself in the path of a mountain lion to save her friend's life. But with this, her own life changed forever.
Now, two years later, Ruth is still struggling to heal physically and emotionally. Even her once strong faith is wavering, and she has doubts about and questions God's ways. Ruth has alienated herself from all her friends. The only one whom she allows to get somewhat close is her long-time secret admirer Frank Henderson, the head chef of the hotel.
Ruth's days get more complicated, busy, and even dangerous when suspicious and damaging things start to occur at the hotel. The reader is introduced to the mastermind of these events early on. Oliver O'Brien believes Harvey cheated her family out of a fortune and has been planning his revenge to take down Harvey's hotels for years. He begins with the empire's crown jewel, the El Tovar.
Ruth's healing journey in this book is important. She has gone through a horrid trauma and is refusing to accept her scars and physical limitations as her new normal. She yearns to be restored to her former life. The one where she had dreams of being the head waitress once again, of marriage and family. Ruth is weighed down with feelings of unworthiness. But her healing starts when she decides to open up about her struggles, accepts help from her friends, lets go of control, and embraces God's grace. It is a beautiful journey to read; simple, yet deep. One of the most uplifting points in the story was the characters' prayers and Bible discussions.
I did not give the book full five starts because as much as I loved Ruth's story, the suspense arc with Oliver and his network of thugs (quite clever on its own) distracted me. But, all in all, A Mark of Grace is a very, very worthy read.
A Mark of Grace is the third book in Kimberley Woodhouse's series, Secrets of the Canyon. Ruth is the heroine. She struggles with scars that she received saving her friend (in book 2!). She withdraws and hides herself away.
Frank has loved Ruth for years. He tries to encourage her through their friendship. Mysterious issues and problems begin to plague the Harvey House where they work. Frank and Ruth work together to try to solve the mystery before anyone gets hurt.
I have loved this series! Kimberley Woodhouse weaves a beautiful tale of love, mystery, and hope. It was hard to put down. I was able to finish it, even while preparing for Christmas with 5 kids!
I received a free copy of this book from Baker Book House. All thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.
No offense to the author, but for some reason I didn't think this book would be as good as the other two were.
I was wrong. In my not so humble opinion, this was the best of the three. Of course there is the fact that the setting of the books and the workings of the hotel and Harvey girls has become very familiar, and the reader knows a lot about all that, so the author doesn't have to spend as much time setting up the setting and all that.
This book was different from the other two in that the two main characters have been in all three books, and did not have to be introduced. Ruth has seemed somewhat of a stern unapproachable character in the previous two books, and that may have played into my thinking that this may not be as good as the other two books. But it definitely gave the author more time for character development.
I love mystery and suspense, and this book had a lot of both. The reader knows both what is going on and who the bad guy is, but there is a lot of suspense as you wonder what is going to happen next, and if Ruth, Frank, and their boss will ever get to the bottom of things before the hotel is ruined forever. In the labels section of blogger, where I first post my book reviews, I labeled the book as "read in one sitting", and I did read it in one sitting. Once I started reading, I didn't put it down except for a few breaks.
As much as I loved the mystery/suspense angle of the book, the book has a lot of spiritual "meat" in it. Not only is this author amazing with the historical accuracy in her books, she definitely does not shy away from making her books obviously and unapologetically Christian.
Ruth struggles throughout most of the book about her injuries and scars from a mountain lion attack. She has built walls and backed off from friends, and has caused Frank to love her from afar as he tries to be her friend. Though Ruth is a fictional character, there is much to be learned about grace, along with the sufferings of Job in the book....enough to make me think on some things I need to think on. Which is most likely the author's intent.
Slight spoiler: the bad guys are eventually caught, Ruth patches up her relationship with God, and of course the guy gets the girl. And we leave the great El Tovar Hotel....which still exists, by the way.
This was a great series that had plenty of mystery and suspense, with a lot of Biblical truths and romance all through the series, coming to an end in this last - and best - book of the trilogy.
I was provided a copy of this book for review purposes. All opinions in this review are my own.
A Mark of Grace finishes the Secret of the Canyon series, and what a finish it is! In typical Kimberley Woodhouse style lush details fill out a story that whisks the reader back to the beginning of the 20th century where the Grand Canyon is the backdrop to a story of mystery, danger, romance, and the truth of God's grace. Kimberley Woodhouse is a master historical writer who brings history into vivid detail. The characters leap off the pages and bring a depth to the story that keeps the reader entranced in the story. With the end of the book, it felt like saying goodbye to new friends. This third installment continues the stories of the Harvey girls working at the crown jewel of the Harvey organization, El Tovar, at the Grand Canyon. After years of training and supporting Harvey girls, Ruth is now the one in need. As she continues healing, everything she worked so hard to obtain feels like it is slipping away. A new job keeps her at the El Tovar but the fun loving and open Ruth puts up walls to protect herself. Now she spends more time in her office than anywhere else, including her beloved Canyon. But trouble is stirring and Ruth is called on to help find what is going on. The numbers aren't adding up and the reason is eluding everyone. As Ruth and the head chef, Frank, pour over the ledgers more problems continue to rise and muddy the situation. Now people are in danger and they are no closer to an answer than when they first started the search. Through all the trials Ruth struggles to see how God is working through her life and how His grace can be enough. Kimberley Woodhouse has another great story to her credit. She has become a favorite historical author and I always look forward to her next book. I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
I've been waiting forever for Ruth's story, and this book was totally worth the wait! There might be a lot of chaos going on here (Let's just say I was getting some anxiety from all the mishaps... I'm sure the characters must've been feeling it even worse!) and there were a few times that I had to put it down for a second to catch my breath. I couldn't ever leave it more than a minute though, because I was just so strongly rooting for Ruth and Frank. The way this book ties up the series is a masterpiece. I felt like I knew that characters so well, even non-POV characters, like Mr. Owens. I also have a phrase stuck in my head now, and it's of the lifechanging variety, since I tend to have a slightly similar personality to Ruth at times: GRACE PLUS NOTHING. Isn't that great? Now, I do have two final things to say, and that is, I knew Oliver's secret pretty early on because I'm a naturally suspicious person and now I'm quite proud of myself, and secondly, while mostly unrelated, isn't there a saying about never trusting a skinny cook? I swear my Spidey senses were tingling as soon as the poor fellow was described. I know I've said this about all three books, but this time I mean it for real... this is the best book in the series! We're going out with a bang! (And a few other loud noises caused by the saboteur and his cronies...) Five stars well earned! I received a copy of this book to review, but all opinions are my own.
A Mark of Grace #3 Secrets of the Canyon by Kimberley Woodhouse
May 1909 El Tovar Hotel, Grand Canyon We return to the Grand Canyons and the El Tovar Hotel in this final book in the Secrets of the Canyon series. I’m happy Ruth Anniston gets her own story. In the previous book, A Gem of Truth, Ruth survived a serious injury that left her physically scarred, broken, and angry at God. My heart aches for her as she struggles to adjust to a very different life than she had had previously. Her longtime friend, Frank Henderson, gives her courage, encouragement and prays for her as his heart longs for more than friendship.
As suspicious activities escalate and dangerous situations increase, Ruth and Frank work together along with El Tovar’s manager to solve the mysterious events before someone is seriously hurt or killed. They are dealing with ruthless characters that threaten all at El Tovar.
I enjoy the faith elements woven throughout the story, especially the faith lessons in regard to grace- God’s Grace. As the other books in this series, the beauty of the Grand Canyons and the El Tovar Hotel located near the canyons as well as the historic Harvey Girls are brought to life on printed-page. With vivid descriptions of the canyons I felt as if I was walking along the canyons trails. It would be fun to visit the El Tovar Hotel and see this historic hotel and the Grand Canyons. The Dear Reader and the note from the author has some interesting historical facts that inspired this book and which are woven within the storyline.
~I bought the book and I received a book from the author/publisher via NetGalley (no monetary gain were exchanged), this is my honest review~
This concluding addition to the Secrets of the Canyon series is a compelling return to the Grand Canyon and Harvey’s El Tovar Hotel. We now find former Harvey Girl Ruth Anniston, one of my favorite characters from the previous books in the series, struggling to recover from wounds she incurred from being mauled by a mountain lion as she sacrificially saved the life of a friend. She not only suffers with physical pain and limitation but also questions her self-worth which adversely affects her relationship with her very special friend Frank and others. If that is not enough to deal with, a revenge plot to bring down the Harvey Empire threatens her and those she holds dear. The fast-paced, action-filled plot kept me riveted from beginning to end. The characters are realistic and relatable. I especially appreciated the valuable faith lesson concerning grace that touch my heart and refreshed my soul. I loved this book and the series and highly recommend it especially for fans of historical Christian romance. Note: Even though this is the third book in the series, it can easily be read as a standalone; however, reading the other two books in the series first will give you some background information that will enhance your reading experience. I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley with no obligation to write a positive review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
this is the THIRD (and final?) book in the series that takes place at the Grand Canyon at El Tovar a Harvey House--the crown restaurant. Like the other two books, you get a first hand look at life as part of the Harvey company. this book is Ruth's story. She's been part of the series from the first book and I'm glad that she finally gets her time to shine.
Each of the ladies in the books faces a challenge of their own. The previous book really dealt with the battle between admiration from the world and finding your worth in God. This book we see Ruth, the "faith advisor" to the girls in the previous books having to face a faith challenge of her own. The second book ended with Ruth getting mauled by a mountain lion--and this third book starts with a repeat prologue of a chapter from the previous book. And then it jumps ahead two years.
Ruth's main battle is that she's in a job where image is everything. And now that she's severely scarred on the face and has a very damaged leg, she feels she is less valuable and less worthy and that people are just giving her things from pity. So she closes herself off to her friends. She doesn't want their pity. She believes that because she's scarred her worth has diminished.
Where she used to be the faith advisor, she's got no time for God now because she feels that maybe she was just giving platitudes before not experiencing trials herself. There is nothing that can be said that will take away her scars. And until they go away and she doesn't limp anymore, she has no worth to anyone.
Ruth's story is a great one because it's relevant then and now. Far too many people ask that question of "why do bad things happen to good people? how can that be God's love?"
This is a solid 4 star book! The whole series is 4 stars for me.
Loved this book and this series!💜📚 With each book I feel like I've stepped off the train at El Tovar after having traveled back in time. I really enjoyed the mystery in this book. I have always loved "who-done-it" books and how are they going to catch the bad guys. This book did not disappoint! I've seen the Grand Canyon years ago when I was in my early 20's. This series and all the history it includes has me wanting to travel there again for another look at the wonderful creation and see all that I missed the first time.
Kimberley Woodhouse writes a sad tale about a woman who suffered a personal trauma that left her leg deformed. The author did a good job of portraying the internal struggle, both emotional and spiritual, that a person faces in such circumstances.
Mostly, I liked the romance between Ruth and Frank, although there were times I wanted to knock some sense into Frank and encourage him to take a risk on love. The drama and tension of the antagonist came across well.
The middle part of the story felt repetitive and a little slow to me. Despite that, I was glad I kept reading as the story picked up.
This was the third book in the series and there were a few times I felt lost having not read the previous books. I’m sure if I’d read them in order, the scenes from Julia and Emma’s points of view would have been more meaningful to me. I would strongly encourage readers to start at the beginning of this series to enjoy the story more.
As someone who has lived in Arizona for over twenty years, I enjoyed reading about the El Tovar at the Grand Canyon, a place I’ve visited many times. Woodhouse clearly researched the Harvey House, the setting, and the time, which allowed the reader to experience the rich history of the El Tovar.
I would recommend this book to fans of Christian historical fiction with a touch of romance.
Genre: Christian Historical Romance, Inspirational Romance Location: El Tovar Hotel, Grand Canyon, Arizona Time Period: 1909 Romance: Very clean. Light kissing. Faith: The major and minor characters walked through applying their faith and scripture to their own growth.

A Mark of Grace is Kimberley Woodhouse's latest book. She is a new author to me and this is book three of the Secrets of the Canyon series. It is written in such a way that it worked well as a.stand alone. The book opens with Ruth Anniston having a discussion with her adoptive parents. She is twenty and doesn't want to settle down and marry especially without love. She wants to go to the El Tovar Hotel near the Grand Canyon to work as a Harvey girl. Her parents reluctantly give in and she gets her wish. She works her way up from a waitress to the head waitress in charge of the dining room and the other girls. She is quite content until a serious accident befalls her and she is attacked by a mountain lion. Her face is scarred, her leg badly injured and her confidence destoyed. There is a ruggedly handsome head chef who has been in love with her for quite some time but she has become so withdrawn that he is afraid to declare himself because she'll think he pities her. I really don't like to give away too much plot, but let's just say that mysterious things start happening at the hotel. Ruth and the head chef Frank are assigned to try to solve the problems. There are many dangerous situations to be reckoned with. This is a real page turner and what I took away from it was 'grace plus nothing.' There's nothing we can do to be good enough. Some flaws are physical, some emotional. The book will be released January 3, 2023 but can be pre-ordered on Amazon or Baker House Publishing. I definitely plan to read more books by her. I received this ARC through the publisher via Netgalley. All opinions are my own.
I thoroughly enjoyed A Mark of Grace, the third and final book in the Secrets of the Canyon trilogy. The series is set in the early 1900s at the El Tovar Hotel which is located directly at the rim of the Grand Canyon. You should really look this hotel up. It’s been beautifully maintained to look much like it did when it was first built. After reading the series, I’ve put the Grand Canyon and staying at this hotel high on my bucket list. I want to see and learn about the places mentioned.
One of the things I really appreciated about the series, was the very strong Christian message in each book. Especially in A Mark of Grace. After meeting Ruth as a secondary character in book one I hoped she would get her own story. Having her story close out the series seems so fitting. As head waitress to the Harvey Girls at the El Tovar Hotel, Ruth is almost like a den mother to the other waitresses. Not only does she hold their work to high standards and help maintain a family like unity but she also is a spiritual mentor to many. I loved and appreciated how naturally the author incorporated these spiritual conversations among the characters. In this book Ruth faces her own pain and suffering and has to wrestle with how she feels with what she knows to be truth about God. I thought the author did a beautiful job of handling the battle raging inside Ruth. The thoughts and feelings Ruth wrestled with were realistic without attacking the character of God. Throughout the book the message of God’s grace shined bright. “Grace alone. Grace…plus nothing.”
I received an advanced reader’s copy from the publisher Bethany House in exchange for an honest review. Thoughts and opinions are my own.
I really enjoyed these 3 books about the Harvey Girls and the El Tovar. This last book about Ruth was my favorite. How this story tied in the story of Job and God’s love and then God’s grace with Ruth dealing with her scars from her injury were perfect. Loved how Amazing Grace was the perfect song for her and Frank’s wedding.
