I don’t normally write reviews on here, but given the niche-ness of this book and for the sake of anyone wondering whether it’s worth purchasing, I’ll write this.
The only way to describe this book is a weird cross between reading the author’s personal diary, and a clunky school science paper. Maybe I misinterpreted the blurb, but I picked up this book hoping for some insightful snippets on how I can build mental strength during my injury, and get back to playing sport. What I got was an incredibly long review of every medical study into ACL patients, with far more detail than I needed, and no clear instructions.
There were little bits to take away, but I felt they got lost in unnecessarily long chapters. It would have been really helpful at the end of each chapter to have a breakdown/summary of what was mentioned, to make sure the point actually got across.
Despite the 10,000 references to ACT, I still don’t fully understand what it is. This book feels like an incredibly lengthy advert for the author’s practice - he even says at a few points, “if you want to learn more, please contact me”. What?
Maybe if you’re big into science studies and reviewing your own situation through a clinical lens, this book could be for you. But it definitely wasn’t for me.
although this book was going in the right direction i felt as if it wasn’t complete in a way. i tore my acl in december and have suffered dramatically from my injury psychologically with developing a rare condition that only 5% of people get resulting in needing another surgery. my first issue with this book is the sentence structure and vocabulary, i am an honors high school student who takes many ap and college classes and found the wording to be unclear and confusing at many points in the book. my second issue is chapter 6, it talks about how much better ACT is better than CBT for 8 pages then completely contradicts itself in the last paragraph stating that one is not better or more effective than the other according to scientific studies. my final grievance is that although these techniques are explained over and over again just in different wording, the book never explains how to execute these practices! and if the book by some chance did explain how to execute the exercises and practices they were personally lost in translation due to the confusing nature of the sentence structure and vocabulary.
Hi Keagen- I enjoyed this book and this year I’ll be coaching a soccer squad with 5 girls returning to sport the team for the first time post ACL tear in u17 soccer. I appreciate the info but I feel similar to the first reviewer in that I have no idea how to help them conduct ACT. There didn’t seem a lot of how to on that front. Do you have additional resources you recommend? I feel like this Info was a good start but not exactly as comprehensive as what I need! Thank you!
I found this book to be so thoroughly researched and explained. The author does the deep dive for you! Very well done. I have two student athletes and found myself highlighted so much to share with them that I think they may just need their own copies. Whether you have sustained a devastating injury or not, this book can actually help you cope with any major setback. I found so much value that I can apply to my own health life. Great resource.
I just started my ACL recovery journey - and I am so glad I found this book early on! There are a lot of reviews here looking for all the answers, and for me that isn’t the purpose of the book.
This is a great way to find a guideline or blueprint for your ACL recovery journey from a mental perspective. It doesn’t go into depth and I think that’s good - everyone’s recovery journey is unique and you have to find how best to apply the ACT pillars for yourself.
A great read if you or a loved one has suffered a tear. There is an incredible mental aspect to the trauma that this book addresses and makes you feel like you are nit going crazy and you are not alone
Helpful in some ways but I found it a bit repetitive, could be a way of emphasizing on the points mentioned in the book. But still, could've been shorter and have used easier language as another reviewer mentioned.
