Speaking directly to the current generation of counselors, The Gift of Therapy lays out simple suggestions that blend personal experience with professional objectivity. This is a book that will remind you why you entered the field in the first place. With tips on avoiding diagnosis (except for insurance purposes), when to disclose personal information, and why it's important to leave time between patient appointments, the recommendations are aimed at therapists, but they may be useful to patients who want to know what to expect from their counselors. Some references to the DSM-IV may be a little over the layperson's head, but in general the writing is clear and understandable for lay readers as well as professionals.

Each chapter is just a few pages long, a nice format for busy folks whose reading time occurs in snippets. A single topic is addressed in each chapter, and author Irvin Yalom doesn't waste any time in getting to the point. Many of the sections revolve around balancing the "magic, mystery, and authority" that come with the job of freeing your clients of their reliance on you.

From when to offer an occasional hug to finding the perfect time for deeper questioning, Yalom's experienced observations will help you achieve even greater professional effectiveness while avoiding some of the more obvious traps in this HMO-directed age of mental health care. --Jill Lightner

About the author

Irvin David Yalom, M.D., is an author of fiction and nonfiction, Emeritus Professor of Psychiatry at Stanford University, an existentialist, and accomplished psychotherapist.

Born in a Jewish family in Washington DC in 1931, he grew up in a poor ethnic area. Avoiding the perils of his neighborhood, he spent most of his childhood indoors, reading books. After graduating with a BA from George Washington University in 1952 and as a Doctor of Medicine from Boston University School of Medicine in 1956 he went on to complete his internship at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York and his residency at the Phipps Clinic of Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore and completed his training in 1960. After two years of Army service at Tripler General Hospital in Honolulu, Yalom began his academic career at Stanford University. He was appointed to the faculty in 1963 and then promoted over the next several years and granted tenure in 1968. Soon after this period he made some of his most lasting contributions by teaching about group psychotherapy and developing his model of existential psychotherapy.

In addition to his scholarly, non-fiction writing, Yalom has produced a number of novels and also experimented with writing techniques. In Everyday Gets a Little Closer Yalom invited a patient to co-write about the experience of therapy. The book has two distinct voices which are looking at the same experience in alternating sections. Yalom's works have been used as collegiate textbooks and standard reading for psychology students. His new and unique view of the patient/client relationship has been added to curriculum in Psychology programs at such schools as John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York City.

The American Psychiatric Association awarded Irvin Yalom the 2000 Oskar Pfister Award (for important contributions to religion and psychiatry).

Yalom has continued to maintain a part-time private practice and has authoried a number of video documentaries on theapeutic techniques. Yalom is also featured in the 2003 documentary Flight From Death, a film that investigates the relationship of human violence to fear of death, as related to subconscious influences.

Pushes the boundaries of modern therapy. The man touches his clients! Physically! OMG! Not only that, but he recommends that therapists should allow space between clients to digest and record and not fill every available therapeutic minute chasing another $! How wonderful, that we can still behave like humans in a field where that is what is so often needed. Validation. If therapists can't connect with clients how the hell is therapy supposed to work? Be where the client is. I think that's the main message of the book with, of course, wonderful examples of how he was with his clients. He may not be orthodox by today's standards but his clients went on to lead happier lives. Loved the inclusion of the Harry Stack Sullivan quote describing therapy as "a discussion of two people, one of them more anxious than the other." Note that it is not necessarily the client who is the anxious party!!

A fabulous book I would recommend to any aspiring or current therapist. Irvin Yalom writes concise and easy-to-read chapters that span several pertinent psychological topics, such as how to exude empathy and when to self-disclose. He hits on unique subjects like the relationship between sex and therapy, as well as the role of research in a therapeutic setting. His advice to focus on the present and to engage with clients in a way that transcends typical boundaries shows his expertise and insight to the field of therapy, and his use of case studies keeps The Gift of Therapy an inviting and intriguing read.

Once again, recommended to anyone interested in therapy at all. One of those books that excites me for my future career.

My fourth Yalom book, this text was the perfect supplement to my Masters course in Psychology (actually sometimes the uni course felt like a supplement to the book!). In an age of “don’t touch your clients” and “don’t let your clients into your life”, comes such advice as “Let your patients matter to you”, “Be transparent” and “Make home visits”. While I wouldn’t agree with everything in this book, it is nonetheless a much-needed antidote to the rigid and restrictive formal training young therapists today receive. There is so much wisdom in this book, formulated as a very readable guide for the young therapist, with fascinating case examples – the whole package.

God, I love this book. It's 3 a.m. and I have 5 patients tomorrow, so I need to sleep instead of write right now. But I really really love this book. So much of it resonates with my beliefs about what therapy should be, which too often is not what we're taught or how many of us behave. In many ways reading it was an experience of validation for the way I work and my complex feelings about all of it. I'm usually a library reader, but I'm glad I bought this one, because I'll be reading it again and again.

با بعضی بخش‌ها موافق نبودم و ارتباط نگرفتم برای همین یک ستاره کم کردم.

When I started this book I was working on my master's and absolute loved the book and all the helpful advice that is given by Yalom. It took me a while to finish it and now I'm working in the field and I'm a little more cynical of the book. While I definitely think there are some universal lessons that apply to all counselors no matter where you're working there were a lot that I don't think apply to a beginning counselor. Most beginner counselors are not working in a private practice and their clients are facing real problems like where to get their next meal or how not to lose their children. Some of the examples in the book were almost laughable. For example, one client is stressed about which woman to take on his Aruba vacation. That's hard for me to relate to when my clients are scared they'll never see their parents again.

Overall I do think it was a worthwhile read, but more so from an academic, theoretical, feel good approach.

I have the impression that many books on therapy in the self-help section are full of watered-down insight and oft-repeated platitudes,like clever pats on the back repackaged a thousand times before---but this book is nothing like that. Yalom is widely considered a contemporary genius in the field when it comes to group therapy (which he is often credited with formulating for contemporary contexts), and this book, despite his occasional self-indulgences, is a testament to his brilliant self-effacing handle on the power of informed-compassion and the human capacity to attend to difficulties in the here-and-now. If you think you may want to be trained as a therapist or counselor, this book may provide excellent insight into how an expert counselor thinks and behaves, and it is full of wry and honest anecdotes about clients he has worked with, and all of their peculiarities. On that note, his clients are characters but they are also normal enough to normalize what receiving therapy may be like---so if you are considering it for yourself this is a good way to test the waters of your pre-contemplation. This book reflects experiential depth and without being painfully, theoretically explicit, is an exploration of what healing means to both those who heal and those who are healed. This will be a classic if it isn't already.

عالی بود و‌ فوق العاده کاربردی... نه فقط برای بیمار و درمانگر؛ که برای یه خواننده معمولی که میخواد بتونه بهتر خودش رو کاوش کنه، عکس العمل ها رو ببینه و درک کنه و ارتباط بهتری رو بسازه.
کتاب تقریبا تمامِ مباحثی که یه درمانگر احتیاج داره رو داخل خودش جای داده، بعضی مباحث کوتاه و در حد یک صفحه هستن اما با مطرح شدن شون ذهن رو درگیر میکنن و همین میتونه کافی باشه.
طرز بیان این کتاب خیلی ساده س و خواننده حتی اگه درمانگر نباشه به زیبایی میتونه خودش رو مخاطب حرفای نویسنده ببینه و تطبیق بده و از نکات مفید و کاربردی ش استفاده کنه.

پنجره جوهری یک شخصیت سنج موثق است که برای آموزش رهبران گروه و‌ اعضای گروه برای خودفاش سازی و بازخورد به کار می رود.



مربع ۱ (شناخته شده برای خود و دیگران) خود عمومی است.
مربع ۲ (ناشناخته برای خود و شناخته شده برای دیگران) خود ناپیداست.
مربع ۳ (شناخته شده برای خود و ناشناخته برای دیگران) خود مخفی است.
مربع ۴ (ناشناخته برای خود و دیگران) خود ناخودآگاه است.
مربع ها از لحاظ اندازه در افراد مختلف متفاوت است: در برخی افراد بزرگ تر است و بعضی کوچک تر. در درمان سعی می کنیم اندازه چهار خانه را تغییر دهیم. می کوشیم تا به خانه عمومی بیمار کمک کنیم به بهای اینکه سه خانه دیگر و خودِ مخفی کوچک تر شود، از طریق فرآیند خودفاش سازی وسیع تر گردد.
البته هدف اصلی ما خود ناپیدا است یعنی خانه دوم. یکی از اهداف درمان افزایش آزمون واقعیت و کمک به افراد است برای دیدن خود همانطور که دیگران آن را می بینند. از طریق بازخورد خود ناپیدا کوچک تر می شود.

یه مثال قشنگ از پنهان بودن خود ناپیدا در این کتاب اومده؛

پیرمردی تعریف می‌ کرد با مردی ملاقات کرده که در کلاس پنجم همکلاس بوده اند. این مرد برایش تعریف کرده که پیرمرد در زمان کودکی پسربچه زیبا با موهای سیاه بوده و همیشه لبخند شیطنت آمیزی بر لب داشته است. این پیرمرد همیشه تصور دیگری از خود داشت و فکر میکرد آدمی ناشی و دست و‌ پا چلفتی است. حالا میگفت که اگر کسی، هرکسی، همان موقع در زمان کودکی به او گفته بود که چقدر زیباست، حتما کل زندگی اش تغییر می کرد.

یکی از مباحثی که از خوندنش لذت بردم، همدلی و اهمیت ش بود که توضیحات فوق العاده ای رو شامل میشد. اینکه یه کمک خیلی بزرگ در درک افراد اینه که از پنجره ی اونها به بیرون نگاه کنیم تا بهتر موقعیت‌شون رو بفهمیم و بی هوا اظهار نظر نکنیم و آزارشون ندیم. درواقع همین همدلی مبحثی بود که چندین فصل رو به خودش اختصاص داده بود تا اهمیتش رو به خواننده نشون بده.

آگاهی شما از گذشته بیمار باعث می شود که بهتر بتوانید از پنجره بیمار به بیرون نگاه کنید. اگر، مثلا، بیماران چیزهای زیادی را از دست داده باشند، در این صورت جهان را از دیدگاه بازنده می بینند. آنان نمی گذارند زیاد به آنان نزدیک شوید چون می ترسند باز هم از دست بدهند. به همین دلیل، جستجوی گذشته اهمیت دارد نه به خاطر ساختن زنجیره ای از علت و معلول، بلکه این امکان را ایجاد می کند تا همدلی کنیم.

همه ی صحبت ها و پیشنهادها در این کتاب بدون تحریف احساسات نویسنده(درمانگر) آورده شده؛ مثل زمانی که صادقانه از کمک بیمار به خودش حرف میزنه و نقش مهم بیمار و این شغل رو در بهبود حال خودش پنهان نمیکنه.

بارها شده در ابتدای جلسه ای درمانی از لحاظ روانی احساس ناآرامی کنم و در پایان جلسه به طور چشمگیری احساس بهبودی کنم، بی آنکه درباره وضعیت درونی ام حرفی زده باشم. فکر می کنم به شکل های مختلفی به من کمک می شود. گاهی اوقات این مسئله نتیجه ی صرفا کارایی در کار است. احساس اینکه با استفاده از مهارت و تجربه توانسته ام به دیگری کمک کنم. گاهی اوقات به این دلیل است که از خودم بیرون آمده ام و با دیگری در تماس بوده ام. تبادل نزدیک با دیگری همیشه شفابخش است.

یا یه موضوع دیگه؛ تاحالا براتون اتفاق افتاده، احساس کنید دوست تون غم سنگینی داره، و خیلی اوقات هم باهاتون درد و دل کنه و شما همه ی سعیتون رو بکنید تا بهش آرامش بدید؛ اما بالاخره یه روز دوست تون حقیقتی رو‌ درباره این غم فاش کنه... حقیقتی که با دونستنش احساس کنید تمام این مدت سرکار بودید و در کمک به دوست تون بیراهه رفتید و دلتون بخواد سرش داد بزنید که‌ آخه چرا الان داری اینو میگی؟
این کتاب برای این موقعیت هم شما را مخاطب قرار میده.

بیماران نباید به دلیل خودفاش سازی تنبیه شوند، هرچند که این کار را با تاخیر انجام دهند. هرزمان که احساس کردید که میخواهید چنین چیزی بگویید، «لعنتی این همه وقت برایت صرف کردم چرا قبلا نگفتی؟» در همین زمان باید زبان تان را گاز بگیرید و‌تمرکز را بر این واقعیت بگذارید که بیمار سرانج��م اعتماد کرده و این اطلاعات را به شما داده است.

ریزه کاری ها و صحبت های فوق العاده ای در این کتاب اومده که خوندنش رو واقعا لذت بخش میکنه. و از تمامِ این نظریه ها و پیشنهادهای نویسنده که بگذریم، میر��یم به مثال های بی نظیری که بعنوان نمونه آورده. نمونه های زیادی از بیمارهایی که داشته، از گفتگوهای بین شون، راهکار درمان اونها و جواب ها و‌ صحبت های خود درمانگر در مقابل بیماران... که همگی به سادگی درک میشن و هدف نویسنده از آوردن شون رو به خوبی میشه درک کرد‌.

برخورد با بیمار مستعد خودکشی یا افسرده: « من می فهمم که تو شدیدا مأیوس هستی، و در مواقعی میخواهی به کلی تسلیم شوی و‌حتی ممکن است همین حالا بخواهی دست از زندگی بکشی. ولی با وجود این، اینجا هستی. بخشی از وجودت تو را به مطب من کشانیده است. اکنون میخواهم با آن بخش از تو، همان بخشی که میخواهد زندگی کند، حرف بزنم.»

می بینید چقدر ساده و با انتخاب لغات درست، سعی داره اون بخش کوچیک رو بیدار کنه؟ اونقدر دقیق صحبت میکنه که بی اندازه لذت بردم از خوندن مثال هایی که از صحبت های خودش در جلسات آورده بود. خیلی خوب میدونه که حرف هاش رو باید با چه مسیری به مقصد برسونه و سعی میکنه هیچ اشتباهی در انتخاب لغات و جمله بندی نکنه... و همه ی اینها رو میشه به خوبی در مثال هاش دید. دوست دارم اینطور حرف زدن رو یاد بگیرم... طوری که دیگران کمترین سوء برداشت رو از حرف هام داشته باشند و دقیقا چیزی که هدفم هست رو به زبون بیارم و سوء تفاهمی پیش نیاد.

اروین یالوم با دلسوزی تمام این کتاب رو تقدیم به درمانگران کرده؛ تمام نصیحت هاش رو با صداقت تمام و با کمک از از تجارب خودش نوشته و خواننده این صداقت رو خوب حس میکنه؛ که هدف نویسنده فقط و فقط پرورش ذهن درمانگر و خواننده س تا در ارتباط خودش با محیط اطراف اشتباه نکنه.

«دیو، من درک می کنم که ممکن است دلایل موجهی برای نپرداختن هزینه هایت داشته باشی. می دانم که در جلسات درمان سخت تلاش می کنی و می دانم برای من ارزش قائلی و در ضمن کاری را که باهم انجام میدهیم با ارزش میدانی، درعین حال فکر میکنم 'بخشی از تو' در برابر پرداخت پول به من احساسات شدید دارد و مقاومت می کند. لطفا بیا درباره آن بخش از تو حرف بزنیم.»
کاربرد «بخش» مفهوم مفیدی است برای دست کم گرفتن، انکار و‌مقاومت در بسیاری از مراحل درمان و غالبا راهی مودبانه و آرام برای بررسی عدم تعادل است. علاوه بر این، برای بیمارانی که نمی توانند عدم تعادل را تحمل کنند و می خواهند زندگی را بصورت سفید و‌ سیاه ببینند، راهی موثر برای شناختن مفهوم خاکستری نشان می دهد.

این کتاب راه هایی رو نشون تون میده تا بتونید به درستی در مسیر درمان گام بردارید، و بازم تاکید میکنم برای این درمان لزومی نداره حتما درمانگر باشید. درسته مخاطب ۹۰ درصدِ کتاب جامعه ی درمانگرهاست، اما من خیلی ساده خودم رو جای درمانگر گذاشتم و کتاب رو بلعیدم و‌ لذت بردم.
فرآیند درمان لزوما بین درمانگر و بیمار اتفاق نمیفته؛ ما هرروز و با هر ارتباط ناخودآگاه بیماریم و یا درمانگر.

آبراهام لینکلن گفته که اگر هشت ساعت برای قطع درخت وقت داشته باشد، چندین ساعت از آن را صرف تیز کردن تبرش می کند. آن چوب بری نباشید که آن قدر عجله دارد که تبرش را تیز نمی کند.

I didn't understand that asking patients to be your therapist, analyzing their dreams, trying to be their friend, insisting that the patient-therapist relationship resembles all the rest of the patient's relationships, insisting that there's always an interpersonal conflict with a subconscious nature that is at the roots of one's emotional disturbance, using your own feelings about the client as a compass, etc. could serve a therapeutic purpose.

DING! It doesn't.

Spare yourself a few bucks by not buying this book filled with vignettes that demonstrate what is therapeutically baneful, groundless normative musings and unnecessary quotes from different books, plays, etc. every other page.

Lastly, Irvin is obviously a man who cannot take good care of himself and is unable to detach his ego from the therapeutic process, rationalizing this as being true to himself and genuine and so forth. This leads to patients becoming dependent on him and his acceptance and approval of them, in particular. As A. Ellis has pointed out - you just replace the irrational belief "Nobody cares about me, therefore I'm a worthless human being" with the equally irrational belief "My therapist, whom I deeply admire, cares about me, therefore I'm a worthy human being".

I started this book in an independent study in the last semester of a my MSSW. This was an exciting and wholly overwhelming time as season of school was ending and the season of getting a job and actually "doing the damn thing" was starting. I felt like I had a precious handful things I that I knew and a bathtub full of knowing of what I don't know. I had (and still sort of have) an urgency to get more, know more and "cram" in anything to quiet the panic of "doing the damn thing" with so much left that I didn't know. This book was a good read during that time. It reads quickly because of the very short chapters and conversational writing style. I particularly appreciated the last two chapters which discuss the occupation hazards and occupational privileges of clinical work. Yalom says that therapists are often either devalued/irrationally feared by clients or overvalued/viewed as more powerful than they actually are. This can be internalized into a tendency for a therapist to critique her own work with either "ripples self-doubt or grandiosity". I was thankful to read this and could relate to the inner critic on these extremes. He had other chapters called "Let the Patient Matter To You", "The Therapist has Many Patients; The Patient, One Therapist", "Acknowledge Your Errors" "Teach Empathy", etc. And in a discussion of therapist going to their own therapy, Yalom admits to several stints in therapy of his own, including a "nude marathon encounter group" in the sixties. So there's that. While this book was good and worthwhile, I think I'm coming to accept that most of that bathtub of "not knowing" won't be drained by books and probably won't ever be drained at all (very unfortunately). With some time removed from the pre-graduation panic, I think my urgency to KNOW A WHOLE BUNCH MORE RIGHT NOW has shifted to more of an awareness that I need to keep building knowledge, which will happen slowly, through the experience of practice, learning from mistakes. Sort of like a bathtub, draining slowly, slowly, slowly.

It was quite a journey! I savoured every word Irv wrote and what he wrote is so touching that one can hardly explain the feelings he elicits in oneself, especially in the young generations of Psychology field.

I love to read from experienced and elderly people. There's a different kind of weight regarding what they write; their writing speaks of experiences, their mistakes, their new discoveries and inspirations.

Reading what Dr. Yalom wrote was like listening from a grandfather sitting at his feet. This is his first book I'm reading and I'm sure this won't be the last. The emotions that raced in me as I read his open letters were diverse but a few among them were nurtured, healed and understood. I guess he not only has a way of healing people with his talks but also does quite a job in healing through writing.

The two days I read this book turned out to be the calmest time I've had in my life.

I'm glad I read this book. It was helpful in all aspects to me. I'd come back to this book quite a few times and swim through the chapters because Irvin Yalom is someone I could follow from now.

I'm not a therapist but this book was full of so much wisdom about communicating with others that a lot the material is applicable to both my personal life and in my work as a teacher. There are so many useful tips here, and so this book merits rereads—and I will make sure to dip back in to fish out some morsel of wisdom from time to time.

به نظرم برای پایان یالوم خوانی، گزینه ی خوبی بود. انگار یک جمع بندی کامل از هر آنچه در داستان ها و کتاب هاش گفته بود رو به صورت خلاصه، صریح و کاملا روشن بیان کرده بود. به نظرم برای روان درمان گران هم گزینه ی خیلی جذابی باشه

ـ بجد كان متعب فى القراءة جدا مش لأنه صعب لأن كل الكلام اللى جواه معروف وساعات كتير بديهي

ـ الكتاب عبارة عن مجموعة من النصائح للمعالجين النفسيين الجداد

- مبهورة بيالوم كمعالج نفسي وشايفة إنه شخص رائع مستعد يقوم بكل شىء من أجل مساعدة المريض (زيارة المنزل،مقابلة العائلة،التعبير عن اهتمامه الفردى بكل مريض،سماع الأحلام وتفسيرها،استخدام المدارس المختلفة وحاجات تانية كتير ذكرها فى الكتاب)

-متفقة معاه فى كل شىء تقريبا ما عدا نقطة الأحلام وتفسيرها واللى شايفة إنها هتكون عقبة فى العلاج مش عامل مساعد لأن تفسير الحلم بيختلف من شخص للتانى والشخص الوحيد القادر على تفسير الحلم فعلا هو صاحب الحلم نفسه لكن بشرط أنه يخوض رحلته العلاجية الأول ومع فهمه لنفسه هيبتدي يفهم رموز عقله الباطن ويقدر يفسر أى حلم من خلال تجربته لكن غير كدة هيتم بذل وقت ومجهود على الفاضى وأيوة فيه معالجين ممتازين فى تفسير الأحلام لكنهم قليلين جدا حتى يالوم ذكر فى كتابه أن لحد الآن فيه تفسيرات بتظهر لأدبيات الأحلام فى كتاب فرويد

ـ عجبتنى فكرة العلاج المتبادل بين المريض والمعالج وده اللى أنا شايفاه موجود فى حياتنا فى كل علاقة أننا بنغير بعض وبنساعد بعض طول الوقت ف�� رحلاتنا المختلفة حتى لو كان التغيير سلبي لكنه موجود وبالنسبة لتجربة المعالج والمريض فبيكون التغيير الإيجابي أكبر لأن بيتم التركيز على النمو والتطور وإزالة العوائق أو التغذية الراجعة مثلا من المريض للمعالج

ـ هل أنصح بقراءة ا��كتاب؟
لا، النصائح اللى موجودة فيه هتكون موجودة ومعروفة فى كل الكتب وبشكل أفضل ولو أنت شخص عادي مش معالج ففيه كتب عن علم النفس أفضل بكتير من ده

تقييمي ⭐⭐ ونصف.

-كتاب هبة العلاج النفسي ،ثاني كتاب أقرأه لأرفين يالوم وتوقعت إني أتفاعل معاه مثل الكتاب السابق ولكن، بما إن الكتاب عبارة عن نصائح للمعالجين النفسيين جعلني أشعر بالملل أحيانا.. في العموم الكتاب سهل ويصلح للقاريء العادي أيضا.

مما أعجبني في الكتاب :
-حرصه الشديد على التركيز على مدى أهمية خلق علاقة إنسانية بين المعالج والمريض وأن تتسم هذة العلاقة بالمرونة والصدق والشفافية من جهة المعالج أولا حتى يبنى بينه وبين المريض جسر ثقة يمكنهم من تحقيق مافي صالح المريض.
- التأكيد على أن الاعتراف بالخطأ من جانب المعالج - إذا أخطأ- والبعد عن التكبر والترفع عن الاعتذار يقوي العلاقة العلاجية ويؤدي إلى تحقيق نتائج جيدة.
-فردانية العملية العلاجية ، واختلاف كل مريض عن الآخر. هناك تقنيات مستخدمة ونظريات ومدارس نفسية وتحليلية مختلفة يلجأ لها المعالج ولكن، كل مريض حالة قائمة بذاتها ولا يجب أن تقاس حالته على آخرين.. يجب أن يركز المعالج على الوقت الحالي والشخص الموجود أمامه.
والكثير الحقيقة مما اعجبني في طريقة الكاتب كمجالع نفسي..

-ولكن هناك مالم أتقبله كقاريء عادي (حاجات مش مريحة بالنسبة لي).

❞ في قصة عن العلاج النفسي في كتاب أمي ومعنى الحياة، يجد بطلي، الدكتور إرنست لاش، نفسه محاصرًا من مريضة جذابة بشكل استثنائي، وتضغط عليه بأسئلة صريحة: «هل أنا جذابة للرجال؟ لك؟ لو لم تكن معالجي، فهل لاستجبتَ لي جنسيًّا؟» هذه هي الأسئلة الكابوسية المطلقة، الأسئلة التي يخشاها المعالجون أكثر من أي شيء آخر الخوف من مثل هذه الأسئلة يجعل الكثير من المعالجين لا يقدمون إلا القليل من أنفسهم ‫ لكنني أعتقد أن هذا الخوف لا مبرر له إذا كان الأمر في مصلحة المريض، فلم لا تقول ببساطة، كما فعل بطل قصتي الخيالي، «إذا كان كل شيء مختلفًا والتقينا في عالم آخر وكنت أعزب ولستُ معالجك، فنعم، سأجدك جذابةً للغاية وبالتأكيد سأبذل جهدًا لمعرفتك بشكل أفضل.» ما الخطر في ذلك؟ من وجهة نظري، هذه الصراحة تزيد فقط من ثقة المريض بك وفي عملية العلاج. بالطبع، هذا لا يمنع أنواعًا أخرى من الاستفسار حول السؤال؛ على سبيل المثال، عن دوافع المريض أو توقيته (السؤال القياسي «لماذا الآن؟») أو الانشغال المفرط بالمظهر الجسدي أو الإغواء، الذي قد يحجب أسئلة أكثر أهمية. ❝

- هنا الطريقة التي يحث المعالجين على التقرب بها للمرضى كنوع من أنواع الـ "ice breaker" في رأيي خاطئة. خصوصًا إن هذا الشخص يعاني من الإحساس بالدونية يمكن وكونه غير جذاب.. فأنا كان اعتراضي إنه.. هل على المعالج أن يكذب أو لنقل يراوغ لكسب ثقة المريض (مع العلم إنه أكد سابقا على المصداقية) ؟.. وأذا كان صادقًا.. أليس من الممكن أن تؤدي ضبابية الحدود هنا إلى مشاكل وتعقيدات أخرى خصوصا إنه ذكر إن أحد المشكلات التي تواجه وسط "المعالجين النفسيين" هو العلاقات بين المرضى والمعالجين التي تضر بالاثنين بل و بالمجال كله!!

❞ ‫ هذا التصريح يُسمِعُنا صدى السؤال العظيم الذي لم يطرحه الكثير من المرضى: «هل تفكر بي بين الجلسات أم أنني أختفي تمامًا من حياتك لبقية الأسبوع؟»
‫ تجربتي تشير إلى أن المرضى غالبًا لا يختفون من ذهني طوال الأسبوع، وإذا كان لدي أفكار منذ الجلسة الأخيرة ربما من المفيد أن يسمعوها، أحرص على مشاركتها. ❝

‏-هذة كانت إجابته على مريض يسأله "ولماذا تفكر بي؟".. في رأيي إجابته على السؤال غريبة.. هل يتوجب على المعالج أن يظل يفكر في المريض أثناء حياته الخاصة ويتأثر به طوال يومه وليس فيما يتعلق بالجلسات فقط؟
مفهوم إن المريض غالبا يبحث عن الاهتمام والاحتواء وأن يتم الاعتراف به و بمشاعره.. ولكن مجددا الحدود أهميتها من أهمية التواصل الانساني الذي أكد عليه الطبيب سابقا حتى لا يؤدي الأمر بخيبات أمل جديدة للمريض او انتكاسات.

-في جزئية أخرى يقول أنه من الشائع أن يتلقى المعالجون المساعدة من مرضاهم "يونج تحدث عن فاعلية المعالج المجروح".. أحيانا من الجيد أن يدرك المريض أن المعالج مثله لديه من المخاوف والمشاكل والمعاناة.. خصوصا في حالة المرضى الذين ربما يعطوا المعالجين مكانة "أعلى" عن أي شخص آخر ربما تخرجهم من بشريتهم. (بس أنا كمريض رايح أتعالج وأحل مشكلتي ولا أعالج المعالج😅)!

-قال أيضًا "إن التفاعل الحميم دائمًا ما يفيد".
وسؤالي كان هذا التفاعل على أي صعيد؟
على الصعيد الإنساني ويقصد تقبل الشخص بدون إصدار الأحكام عليه ، أم النفسي والمقصود تقديم الدعم بكل الطرق التي تساعد المريض على التحسن، أو على الصعيد الجنسي ويقصد كما ذكر سابقا إنه لا مانع لديه من تقديم " sexual validation" للمريض لمجرد أن يُشعره بتحسن!.. وهو ما أظنه خاطيء تماما.. الجملة كانت مطاطية جدًا ولم يحدد معناها.

-بالإضافة لبعض التناقض في كلامه في نهاية الكتاب مما ضاعف من سخطي على الكتاب رغم وجود بعض الأمور الجيدة.
وجهة نظر قارئة ربما تكون قاصرة بما إنه ليس لدي خبرة في هذا المجال ولكن هذا ماشعرت به.

همانند بقیه های کتاب های یالوم عزیز نثر شیوا و روانی داشت و خواننده را درگیر خودش می کرد. فهمیدم از کتاب هایی که از فصل های کوچکی تشکیل شده بسیار لذت می برم.

کویچیکتر از اونی هستم که به کتابی که حاصل یک عمر کار درمانی و پژوهش و واکاوی های یک روان درمانگر بزرگ هست، امتیاز بدهم.
این کتاب رو دوست وبلاگی نادیده اما مهربانم سال گذشته برای تولدم هدیه فرستاد. همون پارسال خواستم بخونمش اما انگار که زود بود برام، هنوز دردهای عمیق تری رو لازم بود بچشم برای تشنه تر شدن و خوندن و فهمیدن این کتاب.
بعد از یه سری دردها و جنگهای درونی به این نتیجه رسیده ام که روان درمانی لازمه ی همه اس، برای خودشناسی... حالا که علاقه مند تر شده ام و سعی کرده ام وارد روان درمانی بشم، این کتاب رو بهتر درک میکنم...
اما به جرئت میتونم بگم که فقط نیمه نوری از حرفای این کتاب رو فهمیده ام و بعدا، باید بخونمش باز و مطمئنم با هر بار دوباره خوندنش چیزهای جدیدتری رو برام روشن میکنه.

کتاب برای روان‌درمانگرهاست و خوندنش برای من این بدی رو داشت که خیلی راحت(تر از قبل) می‌تونم دست درمانگر رو بخونم و طبیعتا هم من و هم درمانگر در روند درمان دچار چالش و سختی بیشتری خواهیم شد.

I'd like Irv Yalom as my therapist.

In Gift of Therapy – and all of his books – Yalom is compassionate, wise, and literate. He is an emotional risk-taker, ethical, thoughtful, honest, and sometimes even funny. He is well-read and, even in the very short chapters that characterize this book (often two pages or less), Yalom may refer to Schopenhauer, Hesse, and Rilke, the way that I refer to my best friends and my children.

Yalom is very human with his clients, even in the places where many of us would pretend to greater perfection than we could ever have. He is generally described as an existential psychotherapist and asks his clients to create real relationships with him and others, face the finiteness of life, and accept responsibility for how they are living – “Even if ninety-nine percent of the bad things that happen to you is someone else’s fault, I want to look at the other one percent—the part that is your responsibility. We have to look at your role, even if it’s very limited, because that’s where I can be of most help” (pp. 139-140).

For Yalom, the therapeutic relationship is everything and technique is merely the conduit to building that relationship. He is a writer and philosopher, not a researcher, but would agree with Wampold and Imel (2015), for example, who observe that there is much more evidence supporting the efficacy of the therapeutic relationship than the therapeutic tasks alone.

Yalom confesses to things that many of us do – or would want to do – but believe are verboten. He would argue that rigidly avoiding crossing boundaries isn't ethical, but inhumane. He says therapists are told: Avoid informality...; avoid first names, do not offer coffee or tea, do not run over the fifty-minute hour, and do not see a member of the opposite sex for the last hour of the day (all offenses to which I plead guilty) (p. 192). Obviously, Yalom wouldn't recommend violating boundaries (e.g., sex with clients), but he is able to see the difference between those interactions that foster relationships and those that undermine people.

When therapists recommend books to each other for inspiration, this is always on the short list. Mentioning Gift of Therapy reminds most of us who we want to be in and out of the therapy room.

این کتاب رو فراتر از علاقه ی خودم به روانشناسی و حتی درمانگر شدن دوست داشتم.پر بود از اگاهی و این اگاهی برای من خیلی با ارزش بود
ازش دیتاهای زیادی در زمینه های مختلف گرفتم
مثلا یکی از چیزهایی که به طور ضمنی میشد فرا گرفت از کتاب مهارت های ارتباطی بود.بالاخره یالوم سعی میکرد با مراجعینش دوستی کنه و توی این رابطه گاهی لازم بود که انتقاد کنه یا تعریف کنه یا تحلیل کنه
خیلی خوب میشد فراگرفت که راه های درست این کارها چیه

بخش دیگه این بود که میتونستی ببینی یه درمانگر به مراجعش چطور نگاه میکنه و اینکه چطور باید نگاه کنه
میتونستی خودت رو اونور میز مجسم کنی.میتونستی ببینی دغدغه هایی که برای درمان داری چیزهاییه که خیلیا دغدغه ش رو دارن و خیلی وقتا طبیعیه.میتونستی ببینی این روند از دید درمانگر چطور پیش میره

علاوه بر اون کتاب میتونه دید مراجع رو به درمانگر صحیح تر بکنه.درک جایگاه درمانگر و کشف محدودیت ها و توانایی هاش رو تسهیل میکنه

تمام کتاب سرشار از نکات انسانیه.حتی لازم نیست خیلی علاقه مند به روانشناسی باشید تا ازش لذت ببرید.جسته گریخته از مبانی فکری اگزیستلنسیالیسم هم حرف زده در کتاب.مثلا وقتی به مرگ یا ازادی میپردازه،شرح میده که شکل مواجهه انسان با مرگ یا ازادی از نگاه اگزیستانسیالیسم چیه و چرا اینجوریه

ضمنا این کتاب یک کتاب تخصصی روانشناسی نیست.یک کتاب تخصصی در زمینه ارتباط درمانگر و مراجع هست.پس میتونه برای همه مفید باشه

ترجمه ی خانم سپیده حبیب هم که همیشه عالیه و این کتاب هم خیلی عالی بود.

A professor recommended How Can I Help? to budding social workers, and I'm recommending The Gift of Therapy. It's quite possible that no one in the world can really understand why we do what we do except for others in the profession, and this "open letter" is an excellent resource to remind us to keep on keeping on with a sense of humor and open hearts and minds.

I give it two very solid thumbs up.

Yalom writes practically, personally, and poetically. In a field full of sterile interactions and defensive practice for fear of litigation, Yalom encourages therapists to maintain their roots for why they got in the field to begin with and care. Written in bite size chunks, this book is easily digestible and helpful no matter where someone is in their vocational journey.

I'd rate this a PG-13 for adult content.

If Yalom's goal here was to make new therapists feel better about not being perfect, I think he more or less got it. I took away a star because he has a thing for dream interpretation and because there were a few chapters I didn't connect to. Otherwise, really helpful!

Skaičiau studijų metais kaip būsimoji terapeutė, o dabar perskaičiau kaip pacientė.

Pamenu, tuomkart paliko didelį įspūdį kaip sklandus praktiškų patarimų ir įžvalgų rinkinys, bet įtariu, kad šįkart iš knygos pasiėmiau gerokai daugiau.

Labai naudinga skaityti ją terapijos metu, tarp konsultacijų -- padeda kitu kampu žvilgtelėti į vykstančius procesus, geriau suprasti terapeuto rolę, motyvuoja nerti truputį giliau.

Būsimiesiems terapeutams -- must read. Labai gera skaityti į tokį ilgametės patirties koncentratą. Įkvepia drąsos ir pasididžiavimo savo profesija.

Parašyta gyvai, paprastai, bet vaizdingai. Daug pavyzdžių iš praktikos.

There are a lot of points in this book that really resonate with what I have felt has helped me as a patient to have a great experience in therapy. It is well written, with fantastically succinct chapters that are grouped by themes and treatment times.

That being said, I don't think I would have finished this book if not for it having been assigned to me for schoolwork. Yalom's examples are reminiscent of those you would find in a self-help workbook, and his desire to guide therapists with an oddly end-all and preachy tone irks me.

Good book, perhaps better for someone who is much more interested in the traditional model of psychotherapy.

Yalom is of course a respected psychotherapist with many, many years of experience in the field compared me, which is perhaps why this work is rather dated at this point. I appreciated helpful reminders, pieces of advice and examples throughout, though there were times I found myself disagreeing and even cringing at his choices. It just goes to show, there is no correct way to do therapy!
