I don’t often deny myself. If I want it, I’ll find a way to obtain it, not caring what lines I have to cross. She is the exception. Indie is forbidden, a toy that isn’t mine to break but she is a pretty thing I’m eager to play with. For months I’ve tried to resist and keep my distance. But it would appear the fates are finally on my side because now she’s willingly come to me. She’s in trouble and I’m the only one who can help….that is if she’s willing to pay the price. I want everything, and I’ll accept nothing less from her. She walked into my life on the arm of my son, but I intend to keep her for myself.
Golden Wings & Pretty Things is an age gap/boyfriend’s father romance that includes themes of coercion, cheating (not on each other but with each other), and adult language/situations.
USA Today Bestselling author Kayleigh King is a writer of contemporary and paranormal romance. She creates love stories that will stick with you, almost like they’re haunting you.
She’s a Diet Coke and cold brew addict, sharing music is her love language, and she seriously lacks a filter. Anything she thinks, she usually says. And if she doesn’t say it, her facial expressions will say it for her. Currently residing in Denver Colorado, you’ll never find her on a snowboard since she avoids the snow like the plague.

🔱 Updated 5/24/22 for the full story. Original review reflected the prequel that was released as part of the Bully God anthology.
Equal parts steam and suspense, Golden Wings & Pretty Things is the twisted and oh-so-hot introduction to the Fractured Rhymes series.
Indie Riverton, meets her boyfriend, Callan Banes, while attending classes at Olympic Sound University, a prestigious private college. Over the course of the summer as their relationship begins to fizzle, other aspects of her life begin to fall apart as well.
Desperate as her future begins crumbling before her eyes, she seeks assistance from the only person in her life who may be able to help her before she loses everything.
That, ironically, happens to be Astor Banes, Callan’s father and president of the college. A calculating and patient man, Astor unabashedly manipulates Indie’s predicament to his benefit.
“Let’s get something straight, Indie. For the duration of our arrangement, your private moments are no longer your own. They now belong to me, just as you do. Your body, your orga$m$, and your fcuking tears are mine. As are the remainder of your firsts. I’m going to take each one of them and claim them as my own.“
Never intending their arrangement to be more than temporary, when feelings emerge, Astor must altogether change his strategy.
“This whole relationship started with my desire to have her please me, and now, the roles have been reversed. I want to please her. I wanted to ease her constant and unrelenting worry. I wanted to be the reason she didn’t frown in her sleep any longer. Simply, I wanted to be the reason she smiled.”
I absolutely loved e.v.e.r.y.t.h.i.n.g. about this story. Astor is the perfect combination of alphahole and caretaker. Indie has an enviable inner strength and is mature, well beyond her years. While the age gap is definitely at the higher end of my comfort zone, it wasn’t a prominent part of the story and their personalities made the gap seem less significant. We got a few breadcrumbs about future stories in the series and I am stoked to see where KK takes us! Love! Love!! LOVE this world she’s building!!

⛔️ Warning: This book may cause blushing, squirming, combusting panties, and/or self-care. It’s definitely NSFW or with a kiddo by your side. In fact, I would highly recommend you read this one after dark to avoid side eye or awkward conversations.
⚠️ Safety Squad: A safe read, in my opinion. However, if you have any hesitation, check the warnings before diving in. Otherwise, blind is best!!
📣 Type: Golden Wings & Pretty Things is part of the Fractured Rhymes series, but can be read as a standalone.
🛑 Be Advised: My Goodreads shelves are … explicit in both senses. As such, they could be considered spoiler-y.
“I’m going to take you so fast and hard you will still feel me inside of you for days. Every time you move, you’re going to be reminded of what I did to you. That I’ve stolen you and claimed you as my own.”
Boyfriend’s dad, age gap, student x dean, degradation…… this book was wild lol
Whoo! this was a short steamy ride and I loved almost every moment of it!!!
This story got -Boyfriend’s dad. -Forbidden age age. -Student x dean. -lots of dirty talking. -Angst -Be my secret slut/whore🔥and many more.
This didn't felt like a novella more like a short novel. I mean the story had depth in time, and we also see some character developments and lots of angst.
Um idk why in between the steamy scenes alot of time things got very cringy idk😭 I just cringed alot but other then that this was very interesting!!!
What I really liked was that we get to see few other characters book teasers that I am sure would appear in the series. And I am so excited to read abt Rafferty and Posie's story next!!!

3/5 ⭐️ 3.75/5 🌶

POV: first person - dual
Type: interconnected stand-alone (book one)
Indie is on the verge of losing her scholarship and goes to the one person she believes can help her, the president of her university who also happens to be her boyfriend’s dad. But when he presents her with two solutions, one seems to blur the lines between not only superior and student but as his son’s girlfriend.

I didn’t feel any connection between the characters. Maybe bc a huge portion of the book was focused on the “arrangement” but I felt nothing between them from the beginning to end.
The love was definitely not there. Not even a smidge. For a long time, he never cared about her well being, only her body and what it could do for him. Everything in her life became an inconvenience to their “agreement”.
Maybe I’m used to heroes who are not only possessive but protective over the heroine but this man wasn’t protective, which in turn meant he lacked care.
Any time something “romantic” happened, there would be slight time skips (ex. 2 weeks then 3 weeks, etc.) right after so we don’t get to actually see the “love” progress but are rather told of the “good” things that happened in the time frame we didn’t witness. I just wasn’t convinced they loved each other.
The smut was good but I like romance not just sex.

Well that was delicious and spicey! Golden Wings and Pretty Thing is hella yummy. This fast-paced, forbidden age gap novella entrances. Dirty talking, powerful alpha hero, a lovable but life-weary heroine, and a scandalous "arrangement" - it's the perfect recipe. Chock full of kinky fun and a dirty talking, super possessive delicious daddy, and I'm am here for this!
Despite the novella length, Kayleigh imbues quite a bit of story. We have some well constructed and substantive characters, and a lusty chemistry that does a bit of evolving. I only wish we had a bit more to them- which, to be fair, is pretty much always my novella experience. The ending just felt a bit abrupt with a seismic shift in their relationship to boot, and there's a lot of time devoted to future characters (hopefully). It's exciting for the future of this world and series (this is a series starter after all), even if I wanted to play around a bit more in this delicious dynamic Kayleigh's created.
But, this is certainly Kayleigh's hottest and most delicious story to date! The angst and taboo are so compelling, and if this is the testament of what we have to come as Kayleigh writes more and more contemporary, I'm SO excited for it!
I love when a MMC is all-in, but doesn't even know it. You know, when his internal monologue is all,
"What's this strange feeling in my chest? Heartburn??" "And what is this bewildering emotion called? It's as if I'm horny... but for her heart." 🤔
😂 Seriously, just fill up my cauldron and hand me a spoon 🥄.
Astor thinks he's so smart playing puppet master. But while he's pulling all these strings to get Indie, he's oblivious to his own heartstrings. He kept swooping in to rescue her, all the while assuring himself that his motives are 💯 totally selfish. I loved it—give Astor a gold medal in mental gymnastics! And then the 🥹
The subplot with Indie's horse was compelling and gave her more depth. (⚠ Some 3rd-party animal abuse is recounted but )
Fairly high spice, dark-lite, slightly edgy, big age gap, no virgins, transactional sex, and Touch-Her-and-
ps: If you're looking for/avoiding the 'cheating-with' trope, this was very mild IMO. Yes she technically cheats on her boyfriend with his dad for a short period, but their relationship was long dead, just neither had officially 'called time' on it 🤷♀️.
Boyfriend’s dad who takes advantages of the situation to have her. Lots of taboo elements (age gap, boyfriend’s dad, he’s also the president of her college, transactional kink), but more like seasoning than main ingredients, because the main course was basically hotness. THAT FIRST SCENE AT HIS DESK. OMG. 🥵
There were also enough sweet moments between Astor and Indie for me to get into their romance. Plus the almost-daddy energy Astor gave off whenever he went behind Indie’s back to fix the situation for her? He may have told himself (and her) that it was to remove obstacles to her being there when he called, but that man had a severe case of “what is this feeling in my chest?” syndrome. 🤣
•forbidden romance •age gap •ex boyfriend’s father •college principal/student •forced proximity
I jumped into this one after loving BWST, but I found it didn’t hit the same.
It was a quick and easy age gap, ex’s dad romance, but I didn’t feel very connected to the characters. It was a little insta-love and the plot was quite shallow. I do enjoy KK’s writing style though-it’s not overly done with smut.
Golden Wings & Pretty Things was a delicious boyfriends dad romance. Astor was manipulative and a very naughty boy. Indie was sweet and a perfect match for Astor. Now while I really enjoyed this one, I thought Callan's reaction to it all seemed too accepting but I guess he had his own reasons. Overall, this one was very enjoyable, and I look forward to reading book 1.
Golden Wings & Pretty Things was my first read from this author! I honestly just heard the tropes for it (age gap, ex boyfriend’s dad) and jumped in! 🤣 This ended up being okay, it was a little hard to get into at first but I did like it more in the second half once feelings actually got involved!
Astor meets his son’s girlfriend, Indie, at the beginning of summer and tries to keep his distance from her because he’s immediately wanting her. By the time fall comes around, Indie’s relationship with her boyfriend has fizzled out and now her future at the prestigious private college is at risk. She ends up coming to Astor for his help, since he’s the university’s president. He says he’ll help her if she agrees to his arrangement: for the remainder of the school year, she’ll be his. At his beck and call for 8 months, including moving in!
“Mine to call upon, mine to have when I please, mine to touch in any way I see fit.”
Like I mentioned, the first but came off a bit insta-lusty, but that is just how their arrangement was set up to be. Eventually real feelings do get involved and I liked seeing how they fall for one another. He helps her get her cherished horse back and we do see him with birds as he trains golden eagles/falconry. The forbidden part of her dating his son when they first get together was kind of light/didn’t become a thing, as their relationship had already fizzled out naturally and both found someone else and no one was upset. 🤷🏼♀️
This was pure smut and little to no plot. But as a sucker of forbidden romances, this was a guilty pleasure that I enjoyed 😂.
This novella introduced us to whom I believe will be the subjects of the books of this series. I am interested enough to pick them up when they come out.
this can’t be the same author who wrote black wings & stolen things 😭😭😭
the best character in this book was emeric, aka my husband, aka the love of my life (mmc of black wings & stolen things), and he appeared maybe twice.
astor (mmc) was utterly boring. having read bw&st first, i had really high expectations for astor, but i guess i now know who the superior brother is. astor doesn’t hold a candle to emeric, seriously.
indie (fmc) was a doormat through and through. this girl didn’t react to anything, istg i was losing my freaking mind just wanting her to simply react to something, and she didn’t. the most i saw her showing emotion was when she was talking about her horse, and even then i was like wait, that’s it? big fucking sigh. didn’t like her at. all.
this has the ex boyfriend’s father trope, but like, it was just there. it didn’t serve any purpose. there was no drama with callum (fmc’s ex/mmc’s son), no angst, nothing. so stupid. this is what callum said to astor:
"dad, you're really good at hiding behind that passive mask of yours, but do you truly think i didn't see the way you looked at her? i knew the first night i brought indie home that you wanted her. when i knew i couldn't use her any longer to get over ophelia, i started bringing her to the lake.” "so, you purposely put her in my path?" "yep." he nods cockily.
huh???? lol everyone in this book (besides emeric) had the emotional depth of a flat soda.
i was kind of interested at first, but then it lost me. then emeric showed up and i got happy for like two pages, and then it lost me again. i felt their chemistry and some tension in the beginning, but it simply vanished. didn’t find astor hot, so the smut lost its appeal to me.
i’ll read the other one in the series because maybe it’ll be as good as black wings & stolen things. hopefully.
overall i feel like astor and indie should’ve stayed as side characters. 2.5 stars solely for emeric, .25 for the few parts that i was interested in at some point.
other info (possible spoilers): 1st person/dual pov no virgins age gap (fmc 19/mmc mid 40s i think?) low angst (imo) no condoms no sharing no owd no omd no cheating (there’s cheating with each other not on each other) no 3rd act breakup hea
This is the second book I’ve read by this author and again I was NOT disappointed. Forbidden romance is one of my favourite things to read, add in the fact it’s a boyfriends dad trope and I was sold before even reading the blurb.
I fell in love with Astor Banes from the moment he appeared, he is truly intensity personified. He knew he wanted Indie from the first time he saw her, but since she was his sons girlfriend he obviously couldn’t do a damn thing about it, that is until Indie finds herself in some trouble which gives Astor the perfect opportunity to have Indie exactly where he wants her…. writhing under him while he brings her immeasurable pleasure 😏.
This book was so freaking good, I was completely engrossed throughout, I love this authors writing style. Astor was the epitome of an alpha who definitely met his match in Indie Riverton, and every time he called her pretty girl I swooned. The steam was chefs kiss this man’s mouth should come with a warning. Definitely recommend reading.
Ahhh there is just something so damn good about a boyfriends/ex boyfriends dad romance. It truly is my favorite trope, if not just the forbidden romance of it all!!
The chemistry between Astor & indie was freaking HOT & I felt so many ✨things✨ while reading, which is a big win in my book ESPECIALLY when it comes to spicy books! Even though Astor was uptigth & hard on the outside, you could see he had the biggest heart after Indie made her way into it!! So swoonyyyy.
We love daddies in this house.
Spice: 🌶️🌶️🌶️
Tropes: Age gap Forbidden romance Boyfriends dad (ahhhhh) Student/teacher
Eine Age-Gap (19/42) Romance mit einigen feinen Zügen von Dark-Romance und einer Menge spice. Hat mir wirklich gut gefallen und machte die ein oder andere kalte Dusche nötig.
If you like forbidden romance and age gap this novella is a must!!! Boyfriend's father done to perfection, this steamy book had tension coming out of the pages and I freaking loved it. So fun and easy to read, I didn't wait for it to end. Now I can't wait for the full story. Astor is just everything!!! This was my first time reading Kayleigh King but it definitely won't be the last.
Astor and Indie were SPECTACULAR!!!!! I loved them from the very start and could NOT get enough!!!! Age gaps are one of my all time favorite tropes to read and Kayleigh King ROCKED it!!! Astor loved showing Indie that her time with little boys were over and she deserved a real man now. And not only did he show her but he shows US too lol I really though throughout the entire book I was going to HATE her ex boyfriend, Callan, who is also Astor's SON. But towards the end he showed me that he wasnt really THAT bad and he actually has more to him than meets the eye. I cant wait to see more from him too. The sex and foreplay scenes in this book not only made me squirm in my seat and had me overheating but made me NEEEEDING MORE!!!! That is exactly what this author is great at doing, leaving me a panting mess and flipping the pages saying "more mommy! I NEED MORE!" Overall, this book was a massive 5 stars and I am ready for this series to continue! WHO WILL WE HAVE NEXT?
