Rate this book
Sentenced to exile by his home world, he’s hungry for revenge. Only he isn’t innocent and Alliance space is no safe haven.

*** Winner: 2024 Fantasy, Futuristic and Paranormal Chapter of RWA Prism Award for Science Fiction***

After Seolta den Coille is falsely imprisoned by the corrupt Ecological Survey bosses then saved by his sister and her husband, he wants one thing only. Revenge. When offworlders offer him a way to get back at those who threatened him, he grabs hold with both fists. Not surprisingly, it doesn’t end well and he’s banished into exile. All that does is give his hunger for vengeance a few more targets. Top of the list, the two off-worlders who lured him into betraying his home world.

Anyara a Prithand2 wants only two things in life: to be left in peace to manage the biota systems of her space station, and to avoid giving her uncle an excuse to kill her. When a newcomer to her home world offers to help her escape, she accepts. Now she just has to survive the adventure.

Chased across Alliance space by their enemies, Seolta and Anyara’s only chance lies with the Alliance Council, the overall governing body of settled space. An organisation as riven with political strife as the enemies they are fleeing.

Can the cleverest of the den Coille’s and the habitat worlds’ best biome scientist stay alive long enough to expose those threatening their worlds?

Mary Brock Jones lives in Auckland, New Zealand, but loves nothing more than to escape into the other worlds in her head, to write science fiction and historical romances. Sedate office worker by day; frantic scribbler by night.

Her parents introduced her to libraries and gave her a farm to play on, where trees became rocket ships and rocky outcrops were ancient fortresses. She grew up writing, filling pages of notebooks and filling her head with stories, but took a number of detours on the pathway to her dream job. After four grown sons, more than one house renovated, grandchildren, a career as a government veterinarian (now retired) and a farm to play on in the weekends, her wish came true.

Her books have won an SFR Galaxy Award and made the finals list for the Romance Writers of Australia RUBY awards, the RWNZ KORU awards, and the RWNZ Clendon awards.

Thank you to NetGalley, Mary Brock Jones, and BooksGoSocial for providing this e-ARC in exchange for my honest review.

As a disclaimer, I did not read “Torn” or “Taken” leading up to “Exiled”. Even without reading the first two books in the series, Exiled was very easy to follow. There are so many components to the story, that I am not sure if I can even fit them all into one review.

“Exiled” gave me Star Wars vibes in the fact that the main character becomes exiled from his home world after trusting the off worlders. He then wants to get revenge on those off worlders. He then meets and picks up Anyara who just wants to be left in peace to take care of the biota systems on her space station, and to avoid her uncle. When she’s given the chance to escape she takes it. Now she is on the adventure of a lifetime trying to survive as she and Seolta are chased across space by their enemies, as they rely on the help from the council. Anyara must survive to expose who is threatening their worlds.

“Exiled” kept me on my toes and reading the adventure wanting to know what was going to happen next. The characters were well executed and had great chemistry throughout the story.

I would 10/10 recommend this book to anyone who loves sci-fi space adventures with a twist. I can't wait to read it again, and I will be going back to read the first two installments of the Arcadia series to see what they have in store!

In Exiled, the Arcadian outcast Seolta – former villain – is initially motivated by the need for vengeance. But in pursing his course, he is ‘distracted’ by real people and real issues. Honestly, I was, at first, disappointed in the choice of the treacherous Seolta as the hero. But his deep regret as well has his love for his family and his world may set him on the heroic path.

Anyara is the quiet heroine who keeps her head down to avoid her uncle, while doing her best to make her home habitat a lovely place to live. Her knowledge and expertise in biome/habitat biology makes her a valuable resource for many people and organizations who seek to take advantage of her for their own gain.

BTW, Anyara’s uncle also happens to be Seolta’s former co-conspirator and the object of his drive for vengeance. The inevitable partnership of Seolta and Anyara will be formed out of necessity and not a little attraction.

One of the underlying premises of the Arcadia series is the fate of the planet. What if you had to change the way you treat the world or you would lose it forever? Except in this case, there is a governing body that is watching and will physically remove you from the planet to make room for people that appreciate it. One of the issues I have had with this consequence is that really, what makes them think the next inhabitants will treat the planet any better? This is something that Anyara, as the biome expert, can and does address.

But on Arcadia, as on Earth, it is difficult and sometimes impossible to change the minds of people who derive money and power from the status quo. This Eco-SciFi tale is a simplistic representation of real-world environmental issues. The relevance of this series is one of the draws. The adventures of Anyara and Seolta take them all over the place – several biomes, ships and, eventually, Arcadia. Everywhere they go, someone is out to harm one or both of them. Or use them for power and financial gain. The plot is complex and constantly moving along, making the 600+ pages fly by. The pair faces steep odds, but their desire and determination keep them on their toes, confronting the many obstacles encountered throughout the story.

Thanks to the author for provided a copy of this book. My review is my honest opinion.

Excellent romantic sci fi adventure

I admit I was not excited Seolta was the focus for book 3 in this series, because I really didn't like Seolta and saw no way to make him a sympathetic character. But I'm glad I was wrong. Exiled may be my favorite book in the series so far. Seolta's redemption is well-written, believable, and sometimes heartbreaking. His PTSD is handled with compassion and not used as a "get out of jail free" card to excuse his past behavior. The plight of Arcadia remains a major focus of the books with Anya's tour showing more of a fascinating, well-imagined planet. The worldbuilding is great, the romance believable, and the story is thrilling. I recommend this series and will buy the books to reread.
