The author smartly chose to tell the story from the perspective of an innocent child. A child doesn’t apply ideological or rational interpretations to the events, leaving it to the reader to interpret the societal issues that emerge throughout the narrative. It’s a reflection on society's long-standing hypocrisy in the name of preserving dignity—though whose dignity and what kind is often ambiguous. What’s considered wrong for one person could easily be right for another.
The film adaptation, featuring iconic actors like Girish Karnad, Amrish Puri, and Lokesh, was beautifully shot in black and white in 1973. You can watch it here:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yS4TgOi4P1E&ab_channel=SGVDigital-KannadaFullMovies
