A Gem of a Mystery Takes Center Stage

Walk through Doors to the Past via a new series of historical stories of romance and adventure.

Elise Malvern has a habit of letting people down. Her former boyfriend who hoped she’d be his bride. Her grandfather who hoped she’d take over the family’s auction company. But mostly she’s disappointed herself. What’s the point of pursuing her passion as a violinist, if she is too scared to audition for a seat in the Pittsburgh Symphony? Her internship at the elegant Heinz Hall places her in the wings of the stage, but never on it. By accident, she discovers an old stage prop. Her instincts tell her there’s more to the paste necklace than meets the eye. Whether a good idea or not, she accepts help from a childhood friend, who happens to be country music megastar—Pierson Brooks. Pierson and Elise share a history; one she doesn’t care to repeat. The more involved they become in the mystery, the more things get tangled, including her heart.

A century earlier…
Sophie Walters longs for center stage, her name on the marquee, and all that jazz, but climbing her way into an acting career is more difficult than she imagined. Having spoiled all her chances in Hollywood, she returns to Pittsburgh, accepting an insignificant role in a popular production. She watches her dreams pass by from behind the curtain at the illustrious Loew’s Penn Theatre. She finally gets the coveted spotlight, but not for her talent. No, her surge to fame is all one terrible mistake. Somehow, she’s suspected to be a notorious jewel thief known around Pittsburgh as The Mirage. The man she pleads for help is none other than the man she jilted at the altar five years before, Sterling Monroe.

Ms. McDaniel gets BETTER and BETTER with every book she releases and this one is STELLAR!! She sets the stage for a mysterious plot, broken hearts, and dangerous villains but that's not all! She's given us a leading cast of characters who strike all the right cues with witty banter, moxie, and the kind of romance that transcends the decades in this time split novel. The curtain lowers but not before Ms. McDaniel tenderly delivers the message of value and worth that will make this a reader favorite!

In Spotlight and Shadow will bring the crowd, er, the reader to their feet, with roaring applause, and anxiously excited for an encore, or rather, for her next book!!

This was my first read of 2023 and an EXCELLENT start. Both storylines grabbed me, and the way they connected was magical and compelling. You will fall in love with Elise and Sophie. And Pittsburgh's history is layered in such a fun and interesting way into the story. From beautiful writing to swoon worthy heroes, this book has it all.

1920s and present day Pittsburgh

Well done time slip novel! The two threads connected and details about the connection unraveled as the story progressed.

In the current day timeline, I LOVED the banter between Elise and Peirson. So much fun. Elise' dream is to play her violin in the Pittsburgh Symphony. Unfortunately, she has debilitating stage fright. Country music star Peirson shows up after a decade of absence. The two had a lot of tension and enlightenment to work through.

In the Jazz Era, Sophie aspires to be the leading lady on stage. With stolen jewels and fingers pointing to Sophie as the culprit, she's in a tough spot. I loved the two gambling grandmothers in this thread.

The four main characters were all appealing and humanly flawed. The mystery aspect of the novel provided twists.

Another well written novel by a talented author. Historical details included enrich the pages.

My gratitude for a complimentary NetGalley copy of the novel. I was not required to post a review and all opinions expressed are my own.

Dual timeline Perfection! Both timelines have a mystery to solve, packed with twists and turns, things I didn't see coming, witty dialogue with humor, second-chance romance with plenty of romantic tension and a high swoon factor, and wonderfully written historical details. This book was a page-turner for sure.

1920, Sophie Walters is an actress, who longs for center stage, her name on the marquee, and all that jazz, but climbing her way into an acting career is more complicated than she imagined.

Present Day, Elise Malvern is a photographer and has a habit of letting people down. Her internship at the elegant Heinz Hall places her in the wings of the stage, but never on it. By accident, she discovers an old stage prop. Her instincts tell her there’s more to the paste necklace than meets the eye. she accepts help from a childhood friend, who happens to be country music megastar—Pierson Brooks. Pierson and Elise share a history; one she doesn’t care to repeat.

I enjoyed how both storylines unfolded and I was absolutely absorbed in the story. Both heroines are wonderful with relatable flaws and weaknesses they struggle to overcome. The story and the settings are brilliant. It hooks you on the first page and doesn't let go. It was a story that was delivered perfectly in just about every way.... this book is a winner in my eyes, and I can't possibly recommend it enough. Delivers the message of worth and value found in Christ alone.

Clean Read-lots of kissing, (but nothing further than that)

My second novel by Rachel Scott McDaniel and I’m giving it a 4⭐️.
It was another mystery with with a dual timelines and second chance romance.
The writing good and laughed out loud whenever Elise was around. I loved her sense of humor and found her delightful. The romance was sweet. This was an inspirational work that was grounded on God and his grace and I enjoyed it.

Did you know I use to play the trumpet in middle school band? The instrument was a hand-me-down from my older sister. The keys would stick, and the spit valve would always gross me out.

So … how does that tie in to In Spotlight and Shadow? Well, our middle school band took a field trip to Pittsburgh to attend a symphony performance. This was held at the legendary Heinz Hall. 12 Year-Old Rachel stood in awe at the opulence of the building. The crystal chandeliers, the stately pillars, the marble flooring. It felt like I was in a ballroom. And that was just the lobby! The auditorium was just as elegant.

Fast forward a LOT of … ahem … years, and More Mature Rachel is writing a story about that very place. I just loved researching, coming up with two mysteries, penning double romances, AND finally—FINALLY—giving Sterling and Sophie from Above the Fold their own story! Ever since my debut novel, I’ve been trying to work Sterling into a book, but the timing was never right. Poor guy has been stranded at the altar for years. 😂

Add in the contemporary couple, Elise and Pierson, and you have the starring cast of In Spotlight and Shadow!

I sure do hope you enjoy this one. Because as of now, it’s out of my hands and into yours.

THIS BOOK!!! 😍 After several friends spoke so highly about this story, I decided to give it a try, and now I’m overwhelmed by how much I loved it!

The story is split between 1927 & the present, and the way the plot lines overlap is beautiful. I really enjoyed the insight into the Roaring 20s’ theatre setting, and I was impressed by how McDaniel showcased both the glitz & glamour of the era alongside the heartache & issues (bootlegging, affairs, domestic abuse, which were all handled tactfully) going on behind the scenes.

The mystery totally consumed me, and I was reluctant to pull myself out of this story long enough to even grab a bite to eat or a cup of tea. The characters have my heart, and I wasn’t ready to say goodbye, even though I was cheering for them with each chapter! 🥲

This is an enchanting story of mistakes & misunderstandings, and ultimately of second chances & forgiveness. I loved every single minute and promptly ordered it even before I finished the last page!!

I highly recommend it & it’s definitely a top read for me!!!

Split time story from a favorite author.
From Speakeasy Prohibition to a modern 50s themed birthday party, this story has charm and wit.
With a clever turn of phrase, Ms. McDaniel has us invested in both time periods. I loved both Sophie and Elsie and kept turning pages to see how each timeline turned out. The connection started out in the theater Heinz Hall in Pittsburgh, formerly Lowe’s Penn Theatre in the 1920s. Both girls reconnect with men from their past: Sophie with Sterling who is now a private detective and Elsie who counted famous Pierson as her best childhood friend.
Some favorite quotes:
Elsie “did not express her feelings well. It was best to keep her emotions locked inside, with several layers of protective wrap around them. But Pierson seemed like the guy who enjoyed snapping the bubbles.”
“They had already had more almost-kiss moments than the entire archive of Hallmark movies.”
“The man was fluent in the language of touch, and I quickly caught the translation.”
With lines like these, the swoon factor is definitely there!
Lots of layers with suspense, romance, hilarious scenes and an enduring faith thread. This is my kind of Dual-time story.

Rachel Scott McDaniel is somewhere between a comfort read and a reward read for me. Currently, I need a little of both, and In Spotlight and Shadow fit the bill.

With her signature wit, uncertain but adorable heroines, swoony heroes, and love of all things 1920s and Pittsburg, McDaniel takes us on another dual timeline adventure. One thing I enjoy about her writing style is that her stories strike a balance of having depth yet not becoming too heavy.

Initially it bugged me that we had only the two heroines’ POVs—I wanted to get inside the guys’ heads, esp Brooks because I didn’t trust him. But ultimately McDaniel one-upped my wish—she enabled the reader to experience how each heroine learned to see herself as her love interest saw her.

I was especially delighted to see Sophie and Sterling as well as a few other beloved characters from McDaniel’s debut novel Above the Fold. While it’s not necessary to read that book first, for those who have read it, it’s a joy to come full circle and fill in the missing pieces.

BOOK REVIEW - In Shadow and Spotlight - Rachel Scott Mcdaniel - 5/5 Stars

The Doors to the Past series has been burning a hole in my TBR pile and I finally started it!

THE STORY
With each book of hers I read, Rachel Scott McDaniel works her way up my favourites list. Her books are witty, amusing and so romantic! And yet each also has deeper themes and needed truths to encourage the reader. I generally don't like stories set in the 1920s/30s but she not only makes them a palatable time period but enjoyable to read about. This story is doubly good because it's a dual timeline that offers two engaging storylines. Two mysteries. Two sets of lovable MCs. Two romances. And one necklace that connects the two.

THE ROMANCE
The greatest thing about dual timelines is twice as many swoony moments! I enjoyed both romances but I'm real partial to a second chance romance, so Sophie and Sterling had a slight edge over Elise and Pierson. Though not much because it's pretty hard to be a flirty country music star with a southern drawl!

THE TRUTHS
The best thing about Christian dual timelines is that they remind me that there are no new problems that God can't handle and that His love unchangeable. An actress from the 1920s receives the same love and care as we do today. God is constant and so is His love. We can can look in the past and see evidence of His steadfastness and trust that He is still with us today. He is one person we can always rely on!

I thought I had already written a review for this but perhaps I forgot to "file" as happens in life...for me with a patient's note etc...arrgh! But never the less, it was yet again an intriguing story as her books have become automatic reads for I know they will be wholesome, have spiritual elements as well, aren't too long nor tedious per say and are a pleasure to read! This kept my interest and the time period connections meshed together fine.... * it was read once, not twice as it seems here*

Wonderful dual-time novel! I was invested in both stories and loved the connection between the two. Ms. McDaniels inserts historical details that bring to life 1920's Pittsburg, with its glittering world of theater and the shady underworld of speakeasies and gambling dens. With the theatre, Heinz Hall formerly Lowe’s Penn Theatre, as an awe-inspiring backdrop to both stories. Both Sophie and Elsie have an interesting connection to the theater.

The second-chance romance in both stories is a roller coaster ride of emotions, both with swoon-worthy heroes that lend a helping hand as they seek to solve mysteries, each with interesting trails of secrets that eventually tie together in a satisfying conclusion.

5 APPLAUSE WORTHY STARS ⭐️
With a standing ovation on the side!!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

This book was a few firsts for me!

This was my first dual timeline story, my first time highlighting a physical copy, my first book set in the 1920’s, my first physical book read in quite a long time and my first book by Rachel Scott McDaniel!

I LOVED all of it! Just ALL of it!!! 😍
This was unlike any book I have ever read! From the ‘20’s setting to the modern day setting everything was described to perfection! I felt completely immersed.
The mysteries in both POVs were absolutely captivating and had me turning pages like a mad woman! And it surprised me! I’m not often surprised in books so that’s a huge 👍🏻
Both Sophie and Elise’s POVs were flawless. Sometimes you read a book and you will like one POV over the other or always want to get back to the other POV. That was not the case here.
I was so absorbed in both and I enjoyed them both SO much!

Elise was hilarious! Her voice was funny and relatable and I just loved her take on things.
Her journey to her birth father and her own self discovery was lovely to watch!
Sophie’s was so selfless and kind. Oh, and she’s a total BOSS! Legend! Queen!
The events at the end of the book had me quite literally applauding her and not her work on the stage! Per say… 🤭

The love interests in both times were capital ‘S’ SWOONY! Pierson had me giggling with his flirting and sweetness and Sterling had me swooning at his protectiveness and passion!
They were both so different but so amazing!
Both love stories were second chance and it was done beautifully. Angsty but not too much. History between the couple that was just 🤌🏻
And kisses that were well worth the wait!

The theme of forgiveness throughout the book was so so beautiful. The faith elements complimented the story too, without feeling overbearing or “preachy”. It was executed so well.

The ending itself was, again, perfection!
It was emotional and rewarding and don’t worry, happy!!! 🥰

I can’t wait to read more from Rachel soon!!!
I highly highly recommend picking this up! If you couldn’t tell by my continual usage of the words… beautiful, amazing, and perfection. 😂🤣 I need a thesaurus apparently.
It’s a new favorite for me FOR SURE! 💙

Extra Things I Loved:
The 50’s party
The gambling Grandmas 👵🏻
Calling each other by their last names
Sterling and Sophie’s meeting in the old theatre
Improv theater 🎭
The “Leave things at Maybe” scene 😍
The non-fake dating
Sophie being interrogated
Pierson performing at the senior home
The entire scene in Greer’s suite
The road trip!
The REVENGE KISS
The TWISTS
The entire ending!
Cole winning his $2… 🥹
Prom!

*Thank you so much to the publisher for the physical copy! All thoughts and opinions are my own and genuine.*

Wonderful story and little "escape"/comfort read! Intriguing twists and connections that I tried to figure out and kept me curious. A feel good, enjoyable read. her spiritual and faith elements shone through as usual in her books which I so appreciate (as are in Barbour books usually as well) Gladly recommend her to anyone for an uplifting mystery/romance/suspence and definitely Christian book! (no questionable material etc) She is a favourite and automatic go to author for me as I buy hers without any hesitation. Although I want some romance per say, so I am rather cynical when it comes to that ;) it's perfect for those who relish that along with everything else! Well worth and a pleasure reading.

I have read all of Rachel's books and I have never been disappointed. They have all been excellent and intriguing and this one definitely rose above the top. I think she has such a knack for writing dual timelines that completely draw you in. There is always a bit of everything from mystery to humor, twists and of course swoon worthy romances!!

Although I thoroughly enjoyed both timelines I must admit that I have been waiting for this 1920's timeline since Rachel's first book Above the Fold. (If you haven't read it yet you must!!) I was so glad to have resolution to Sterling and Sophie's storyline. It was great getting to know Sophie better and why she acted the way she did in the first book. The jewel thief twist was perfect in this storyline!! We get to see some past characters and that was just like the cherry on top for me!

We do have to talk about the present timeline... whew the characters chemistry is on fire!! The almost kisses between her and Pierson had me at the edge of my seat. I really enjoyed their storyline as well and I could've read a whole book just about them. The growth that Elise goes through in the story is amazing. She truly grows not only within herself but with God. She starts seeing herself the way God sees her and realizes that she needs to live her life and not follow after someone else's dream. This is all due to Pierson challenging her which I found completely swoon-worthy!

Both timelines were amazing and I didn't know how in the world they were going to connect to each other but they did. There were twists I didn't expect which is always a good thing when reading a book. I read this way past my bedtime and it was completely worth it!

Overall I loved this book but honestly I have loved every book that Rachel has written. She is one of my favorites. The way she writes is enjoyable to read because she truly grabs you. I laughed, awaited in suspense and even shed some tears while reading. The faith thread was present and I love that she puts God in the center of all her stories. I for one can't wait to read what she pens next!

I received a copy of this book for review. I was not required to post a positive review. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.

I absolutely LOVED this story!! It's a split time and I loved both time periods equally.

If you like laughing out loud you'll LOVE the "current" time storyline. Of course, mix in a mystery, romance, and strong faith, and you've got the recipe for a fabulous story. If you like your heart strings being pulled and a second chance romance with a mystery thrown in, you'll be in seventh heaven with the historical story.

Elise is living life not knowing her father and her mother having passed away. With an unexpected run in with her former boyfriend, she ends up chasing after a mystery of an emerald necklace. I loved seeing the world through Elise's eyes. While she deals with anxiety when trying to perform, her work at Heinz Hall is important to her. With Pierson back in her life, and challenging her to do "scary" things, they become quite the team. I will admit that I laughed so much throughout their storyline. At one point it was loudly! Their banter was fantastic. Pierson was SO great at helping Sophie challenge herself!

Getting to know Sophie in the past was more heart wrenching and where the mystery starts. Sophie was a fun character to get to know and for the life of me I couldn't figure out a) why she left Sterling at the altar and b) how the timelines would be connected. When Sophie finally explains what happened in her past I was incredibly surprised. I liked Sterling's broody and strong presence in her life.

I enjoyed how both storylines unfolded and was absolutely absorbed in the story. The faith that was evident in the characters lives showed how God made an impact in their lives. I appreciate when authors use characters to share the Truth of the Savior. It was well done in this story.

*I received the book for review. This is my personal opinion.

Let me begin by saying that I rarely ever read a book's synopsis. I HATE being spoiled or waiting for an event to happen. I also had not read any of the previous books in the Doors to the Past series. So, I started this book at a slight disadvantage. I had read and really enjoyed another book by Rachel Scott McDaniel and knew that my friend Joy raved about this book. Plus that cover! As a redhead, I love seeing heroines with red hair! I wonder if I can find something to recreated that cover... I digress...

Anyway, I was offered an advanced copy through Netgalley and was excited to read it. As I mentioned, it took me a few chapters to get the flow of the story and figure out what was happening. The characters and plot lines were interesting and kept me reading until I understood the dual time lines and could keep the characters straight.

I loved the banter between Elise and Piers. Then Sophie and Sterling.... Wow. What a story. I am thankful to all that had a part in getting me to read this book. I highly recommend you do as well. Now I'm off to find more books in this series, especially those written by Ms. McDaniel.

First of all, if I knew nothing about this author or this book, that cover would absolutely convince me that I HAD to read it. It's gorgeous! And boy does it fit the historical storyline so well! But I do know about this author and the book and so you can insert my happy sigh here because it was wonderful! Rachel McDaniel's voice is so unique and I never know how to fully articulate that. I always look forward to her next book! Her historical pieces make me feel as though I am watching a classic Hollywood movie, which I absolutely adore! But it has been so fun to see her delve into contemporary storylines. And as was true with her last split-time, I loved both timelines in this book as well. And to see how she connected both stories - wowza! So good! She has mastered the art of not allowing readers to put a book down so be prepared going in to keep turning those pages! The romance in this one... you get not one, but TWO heroes to swoon over. And swoon you shall. *fans self just thinking about it haha!

Just wasn't into it like I wanted to be *shrugs* not a bad book but it's a dud for this reader.

I found Sophie's story more interesting, except for bits and pieces of the present storyline. The romances too fell flat for me.

Rachel Scott McDaniel proves once again with In Spotlight and Shadow why she’s one of the best at writing dual time period romances! From the beginning, I was pulled into the glitz & glam world of the 1920’s Pittsburg theater scene. Sophie Walters, an actress striving to get noticed in the cutthroat world becomes famous when she’s accused of being The Mirage, a mysterious jewel thief. She turns to her former fiancé Sterling Monroe, an ex cop, now private investigator to help clear her name.

In modern times, Elise’s dream of playing her violin with the PIttsburg symphony is hampered only by her fears. She’s tired of disingenuous boyfriends, being stuck in her current life, and being too afraid to go for her dreams. She’s ready for a change. When her former childhood friend and country music star heartthrob returns for his grandmother’s 80th birthday party, there’s a sizzling attraction there. But, Elsie can’t forget that he ghosted her years before. When she receives a mysterious package from the father she’s never met, she’s intrigued by the contents which include a playbill of an old Broadway star and an emerald necklace that looks anything but fake. As she and the famous Pierson Brooks try to solve the mysteries of the past, they may uncover more than they bargained for.

Loved the twists and turns this story took! Both romances are second chance and I loved discovering each clue as to why things didn’t work out the first time. Pierson melted my heart with his use of “darlin” and his teasing humor. I loved the contrast between him and Elise’s more practical nature. Sophie and Sterling have that constant undercurrent of passion between them. There’s a lot of unresolved hurt and misunderstanding. I loved it when Sophie finally opens up as to why she left and her reasons make the story even more intriguing.

The mysteries in both time periods completely drew me in. I loved the way the stories intersected and how Elise and Sophie both had similar journeys. There were a lot of things I didn’t see coming and I enjoyed the surprises along the way. All of the characters were so endearing. Other than the main characters, I especially enjoyed Meredith and the meddling grandmothers. I loved the way faith was naturally woven into the story. The messages of love and forgiveness were powerful.

If you enjoy dual time period novels or historical romance/mystery with an inspirational message, I highly recommend this book! I received an advanced complimentary copy from the publisher. All opinions are my own and freely given.

In Spotlight and Shadow is my first book from this author and I was not disappointed. I look forward to reading more books from Rachel Scott McDaniel. And did someone say dual timelines? Yes, please! I don’t read many of these types of stories and I really need to find more. The way the author brings the stories together is very enjoyable. And Elise and Pierson! Wow. Their banter was written so well. I loved when they were on the page. They helped each other in so many ways. The supporting characters were wonderful too. I especially enjoyed Meredith and the events around her story. The betting grandmas were a hoot.

I enjoyed the mystery of Sophie’s timeline. She was a strong, fantastic character with past secrets and pains. But she doesn’t let those hold her back. What I liked about Sophie the most was her honesty. The author does a great job of planting seeds of events that are revealed later on. Each timeline has engaging twists and turns. And the climax, wow! Each chapter ended in a way that I had to keep reading.

#BookRevew: IN SPOTLIGHT AND SHADOW by Rachel Scott McDaniel

As my first book by this author, this one didn’t disappoint. The writing style was good and has some subtle faith elements laced throughout the story. The title of the book made sense when she referenced it in some of the lines.

This dual timeline was well done. Every chapter introduced us to Elise, in the present times, and Sophie, a century ago. Each chapter left me with questions. The mystery progressed at a good pace. I was pleased with how things tied up at the end.

I was invested as Elise and Pierson pursued their investigation about Elise’s father. They have a really good chemistry as friends. Romantically, not so much. I also wanted more individual character development. I did enjoy their musical talents. I wish I could hear Pierson sing and Elise play the violin. Sophie and Sterling on the other hand were sweet to each other and had good chemistry. Sterling was a brooding hero. He still loved Sophie despite their past. Sophie had a big heart and was always compassionate to others. The theatre life and the mystery of the theft were engaging and thrilling. But who was the “Mirage”?

Overall this was a great addition to the Doors to the Past series. It was rich in historical details. The topic of illegitimacy and parental abandonment were handled well and sincere. This was an enjoyable and cozy read. Christian romantic suspense fans will surely enjoy this book.

Split-time mystery with not one, but two second-chance romances.

The roaring twenties timeline starts with a bang - a sidelined actress, her jilted fiancé-turned-private-eye, a mysterious string of thefts, and some quite eccentric characters. In the modern day, we have a control-obsessed young woman fighting off greedy suitors, trying to discover her passion and plan her career, and working hard to keep her gambling grandmother from making her reunion with her high school best friend (and maybe crush) awkward. All while trying to discover her own history.

I really enjoyed the romance aspect of this book - both of the romances. And that takes a lot for my logical, romance-jaded mind to admit. But the leading ladies were awesome characters, and the leading men were just amazing. Put them together, and even I was enjoying the mushy scenes. The family mystery aspects were also interesting - as soon as the secrets were revealed, they made sense. But I didn't guess them ahead of time. Also, the characters were just a lot of fun to spend time with. Now I really want to read Rachel's other book that involves Elissa and Cole (I think I got those names right).

The main "Mirage" mystery wasn't my favorite - once pieces were revealed, the rest of the plot was amazing. But it wasn't particularly interesting until the big reveal. Additionally, sometimes the story would just feel like it was missing something (more of a vague sense than something I can put my finger on).

However, by the end, none of that mattered. The ending made up for my complaints with the middle of the story, and I ended up thoroughly enjoying the book. I'm looking forward to reading more by Rachel Scott McDaniel!

Content: Moderate romance (stays clean, though), mentions of past affairs, some random side characters who make lewd comments, and a few implied mentions of other characters of questionable repute possibly sleeping around (implied in discussion, never anything on screen or with POV characters). Mentions of drinking. Mild violence (including mentions of abuse), especially near the end.

Thank you to NetGalley and Barbour Publishing for providing me with an e-copy of this book. All opinions are my own, and a positive review was not required.
Though, of course, it's hard not to give a positive review for a book like this . . .

Yinz just NEED to read this book!!

It was an absolute honor to be given an ARC of this book from the author and all of the obsessing about to ensue is purely my own and voluntarily (happily, uncontainably) shared.

Okay, yinz (you'll understand when you read the book) know I love all things music, and when there is a music themed book with characters who are musicians, it's an automatic read for me. In this story, both the hero and heroine are musicians in the contemporary time line. Pierson is a country music star, while Elise is a violinist trying to gain a second position chair with the symphony...to follow in her mother's footsteps.

In the past time line, Sterling is a detective, while Sophie an actress. Both time lines, both sets of characters are couples with a past, which I do so enjoy those kinds. They already know so much about each other and there's much to work through and it just leads to a satisfying end.

The mystery that tied the two time lines together was so intriguing and made it very hard to have to stop reading some nights. And, man, is it extra tortuous when some amazing revelation is made but then it switches to the other time period. Ugh!! I'm pretty sure I let out an audible "WHAT?!" at least once, if not twice. Talk about surprise.

I liked how Sterling had to come to believe Sophie when he realized she was, indeed, telling the truth about why she left him at the altar. It was exciting the way the Mirage (jewel thief) was exposed. It was precious how Pierson helped Elise overcome her stage fright, and I loved the way Elise and Pierson didn't care about the paparazzi around their growing relationship, and the way they both chose each other when it absolutely mattered the most. And those kissing scenes...oh my!

I'm not sure if I've ever read a split time novel that only had the female's POV in both time periods, but I really enjoyed it. For some reason I find the heros to be even more intriguing when we don't get their POV.

In summary, an amazing novel for the historical, romance, and music loving reader, who appreciates a well pulled off split time novel...of which I believe McDaniel is the queen!!

Will definitely be getting a copy and re-reading in the future!

If you’ve never read a book by Rachel Scott McDaniel, this is the one to start with!! In this dual-time mystery-romance, we read of two women who rediscover their joy and purpose, and renew their trust in God along the way. And both timelines share the second-chance romance trope *happy sigh*
In the 1920’s, Sophie Walters is wrongly accused of being a notorious jewel thief, and has no one but her former fiancé to help clear her name. As they work toward finding the culprit, their hearts warm toward one another again.
In the modern timeline, Elise Malvern believes she lets everyone down. Yet when she happens upon an old stage prop, she knows there’s a story to it. Her childhood best friend, whom she hasn’t really forgotten or moved on from, happens to be in town and volunteers to help. What Elise discovers about herself, and the bridges they cross together, changes everything.
I really loved the second chance romance trope that both of these timelines share. I love seeing the vulnerability and willingness to own up to mistakes of the past that comes with this trope. Rachel wrote it beautifully in both timelines, though I think I enjoyed the contemporary one a teeny bit more. I did enjoy jumping back into the 20’s with this one! Sophie had a hard situation, and Sterling was a wonderful brooding hero to help her. Elise and Pierson also went together well, and I enjoyed their relationship journey. I really enjoy Rachel’s writing style, and I think this may be her best book yet! I really could have finished this in one sitting had time allowed, and in one instance I finished one of Sophie’s chapters and skipped to the next one set in the past so I wouldn’t end my reading time on a cliffhanger. This is seriously one you don’t want to miss!
Thank you to Barbour Publishing, Netgalley, and Rachel Scott McDaniel for my review copy. All thoughts are my own; a positive review was not required.

re-read 2025:
gosh I love this book. I wanted a good second-chance romance and my brain said "abby you already know the perfect one" and she was so correct so. shout-out to my brain, you rock.

original review 2023:

okay well I've already found one of my favorite reads of 2023. so that's great.

I wish I knew how to properly articulate how delightful this book was for me. After reading (and loving) McDaniel's Undercurrent of Secrets, I knew I wanted to check out her next "Doors to the Past" installment, and I'm so glad I did, because I loved this one even more! The characters, the atmosphere, the romance, the mystery, every single piece was just perfect.

I enjoyed the modern and historical timelines equally! I loved following both Elise and Sophie, both of whom are caught up in mysteries, but also in second-chance romances. (whether you prefer a "we were friends as kids and had mutual crushes and now we're back in the same city and dealing with those feelings" plot or a "i left him at the altar oops" plot, there's one of each in here so... 10/10 I loved it) ((literally I squealed out loud several times because they're just so darn CUTE I can't even))

also I fully fell in love with both Pierson Brooks and Sterling Monroe, where might one find one of them? asking for a friend ;)

Five stars for sure from me. I already can't wait to see what McDaniel has in store next!

Content warnings for mentions of extramarital affairs, traumatic loss of parents, and lots of kissing, lol (but nothing further than that)

This stunning dual timeline is full of romance, mystery, and suspense and once I started, I knew I was not going to be able to put it down until I finished.

Sophie is a struggling actress in 1920s Pittsburgh weighed down with regrets and secrets. When she is falsely accused of stealing jewelry from wealthy patrons, the one man who can help her is the same man she left at the altar five years earlier.

A century later, Ellie is struggling to conquer her stage fright to fulfill a lifelong dream. When she runs into her childhood best friend turned country music star, he devises a plan to help her,
though being with him again is bringing back feelings she would rather forget.

There are significant parallels between the two plots and one by one, pieces are revealed that show how Sophie and Ellie's stories connect, creating a heartwarming and beautiful harmony between two seemingly different storylines.

Both stories had second-chance romances (loved Sterling and Pearson!) and oh my, the kissing scenes were sweet but oh so very swoony!

The engaging plot, the poetic prose, and the beautiful themes of acceptance and love are also part of what makes this book an absolute must-read. I enjoyed it from the first page to the last and only wish I could give it more than 5 stars!

I received a complimentary copy of this book but a positive review was not required.
