The Sin of Saints

Rate this book
Growing up in Eserene's slums, Petra's life is marred by unimaginable tragedy. Things finally begin to look up when she meets Calomyr, member of the Royal Guard and keeper of just as much heartache as Petra.

Once again, though, her life is upended when her mother remarries a Lord, forcing Petra to undergo a brutal initiation ceremony in order to ascend to the Royal Court.

As Petra prepares for initiation, news of a drug-fueled fanatical rebel regime reaches the high walls of Eserene. No one seems to panic, so Petra doesn't either.

Until the city is smoldering before her.

Outside the city walls, Petra must untangle a smoke-shrouded web woven long before she was born. She finds her entire life has been orchestrated for one purpose, a purpose kept hidden from her until she unveils the secret that thrums through her veins. As everything she thought she knew unravels, Petra is forced to confront ghosts she didn't know she had - and the monsters and demons that now join them...

Holy. Shit.
To say this book blew me away is not an understatement and THAT insane ending!!

“So, my good Sirs, please forgive me if I lack certain elements of a perfect Initiate, but please know I grew up tripping over rats, not the hems of ballgowns.”

The Sin of Saints is an exquisitely rendered and lushly dark debut following the journey of a heroine whose life is marked by tragedies, but little does she know that every chapter of her life has been written by monsters who wish to break her, and as the dark truths unveil themselves, Petra must burn to finally rise from the ashes.

Imagine a book that draws inspiration from The Plated Prionser and The Handmaiden's Tale with a sprinkle of From Blood and Ash? You get this book.

— Dark Fantasy Romance (New Adult)
— Dark court intrigue
— Slowburn Romance
— Dark Gothic Setting
— Morally Grey FMC (24 years old)
— Suspense
— Spice (2/5)
— Past and Present 1st Person POV
— Character-driven
— Unique World-building
— Benevolent Saints x Blood Saints
— Secrets
— Brutal
— Fanatical Groups
— Plot twists

I am in awe of the quality and the work put into this debut novel, so a round of applause for the author for crafting such a unique story. The book had a gothic backdrop which lent the story the perfect eerie and sinister mood.

This book did a great job at setting a solid foundation for the Benevolence & Blood series.

Petra's journey was devastating yet in face of all the tragedies, she still stood tall even if she broke more than once. Lauren created such a compelling multidimensional heroine who is also morally ambiguous. I enjoyed being in Petra's head and she was a reliable narrator and I think the past (4 years prior to the story) and present POVs added alot to the story and built up the anticipation.

The romance blossomed in this book and it was sweet, tender and at times: hot. I will say that the romance developed slowly and I look forward to see more of the love interest. The pace did not bother me since it leaves out more to look forward to in the second book.

We were simply two souls that had broken in a way that not many souls broke, the fault lines jagged and sharp enough to tear up every other part of us.

This book is straight up brutal.
It does not shy away from lifting the veil off the vulgarity and brutality in the world Petra lives in.

There are nations and societies led by twisted ideals and beliefs. There are power-hungry and egoistic men that are ready to drench their hands in the blood of innocents as a means to an end. Some molded the minds of groups and nations to accept and find honor in their horrific acts. Some play it out as if it's their holy mission no matter how depraved it becomes, the irony of such men becoming judges of purity and impurity.

You can expect plenty of action, tension, and dread within this story and it will put you on edge and make you bite your nails until you're gnawing on your own flesh because that's how it made my nerves turn into knots.

I would categorize this book as: emotionally destructive

“People aren’t born hateful. People aren’t born with the desire to hurt, to draw blood.” Her voice was small, thoughtful. “I want to know what happened to him to make him a monster.”

Trigger Warnings: includes graphic content and dark themes such as violence, death, torture, sadisim, drug abuse, PTSD, depression, attempted sexual assault, mention of miscarriage.

What. The. Heck.

The Sin of Saints follows Petra, a young woman living in the slums of a powerful kingdom, who faces the most heartbreak I’ve ever read. This book is tagged as “dark” and holy me oh my does it deliver. It’s gory, brutal, and sad af.

I was a phoenix, and I would rise in a burst of fire or die setting everything ablaze.

This book spans past and present, with the “then” chapters following Petra during her time in the slums, and the “now” chapters following the several tragedies that she faces. The timelines were pretty well-balanced, with minor cliffhangers that made me want to speed through this book (which I did).

There is great world building and lore that was easily followed. I didn’t feel lost, confused, or bored at any times (which is saying something because I’ve been in s l u m p recently).

The plot is a little slow moving, but we really get to know Petra and watch her overcome her traumas and come back stronger and stronger. Also, if you didn’t see my updates, it’s very clear that she’s ✨the chosen one

You’re a warrior. You’ve always been a warrior, fire burned and ocean tumbled.

You know that I love strong fmc’s, and Petra is no different. She’s definitely flawed, but that made her for me. I also loved all of her [lovable] characters and LOATHED the villains. The characters were vibrant, and they really made the story for me.

The romance is slow burn and Cal is 🫶
He’s in the royal guard, and he totally falls first. There’s some elements of protectiveness but he’s not an overbearing alpha kind of guy. He wants to support Petra, not control her. He’s also a cinnamon roll for her and I just love him sm.

There’s court intrigue, cult-like groups, gods/goddesses (called “saints”), and a lot of dark elements (gore, attempted SA, suicidal ideation, sadism, violence, and gross misogyny—think a handmaid’s tale level). I loved getting transported into this dark fantastical world.

There’s a pretty brutal cliffhanger, and some great twists and turns. I can’t WAIT for book 2.

4.19!

Let me start by saying the writing style was so beautiful like I absolutely loved it. Lauren slayed the writing style and this what made em enjoy this novel way more than it hought I would. It gripped me and immersed me in that world. It was as if I was there Infront of them as the events unfolded.

The characters I have to say our FMC Petra was a good FMC to an extent I liked her development that Lauren showed through the "then/now" chapters and her witty remarks but at the end of the day she was all bark and no bite I hope that changes in the second book but overall I really like how her tragic background is written. Raised in poverty and fighting to sustain for her family while simultaneously battling grief. Beautifully depicted.

MMC I actually forgot how to spell his name 😅 he was honestly a little forgettable. it's not that I did not enjoy their scenes but rather that I found them to be good only at that moment but as I moved forward they faded away and he's introduced after some time so maybe that influenced it as well.

Romance I liked that there was spice but not too heavy for the book but the romance for me personally felt rushed. There was no angst between them and I felt that they were moving too fast where I couldn't grasp or keep a hold off anythign from their relationship. Hopefully this will get better in the next book as well.

The plot OH MY GOD Ioved it. I absolutely loved it. Despite it being a short book the author killed it because it was amazing. The stakes were so high. Mild twists not that much but the way the author kept me intrigued was AMAZINGGGGG.

The worldbuilding and magic system was astounding so vivid and so well developed for a debut and a first book in the series. I think it's one of the best debuts that I've read in a while.

Would definitely recommend!

this book was so awful. wayyy too slow and so much dialogue of people telling stories and histories that just dragged on. this book is the definition of telling instead of showing. also, i’m so sick of every book having the major plot point of “he is not who he says he is.” it was so obvious that calomyr was actually the king and not just a royal guard. i skipped through so many chapters bc i could not deal with how much unnecessary dialogue there was.

"You will never move on. You will never forget. It will never stop hurting. It will be a part of the load you carry for the rest of your life. And that load will never get lighter, rather you will grow stronger."

(4.5⭐)

petra is the new love of my life how does one suffer THAT much and still be so strong??? literally this girl cant catch a break AT ALL. and not only that but she's such a sweet and funny MC there was never a dull moment in her POV and her snarkiness !! even when she's afraid she faces death staring down at her enemies <3

this was such an intense read omg. It was split into alternating chapters of past and present and the author did it so well!! Every present chapter kept ending in a cliffhanger only to switch to the past and leaving me dying for more and then when I'd reach the past chapters theyd also leave me dying for more like ??? both were so interesting omg I couldn't get enough of the story

“You can thank me by continuing to fight. You can thank me by continuing not to break when the world has stretched you to your limit and beat you against the ground. You can thank me by living, Petra, not just surviving.”

I swear petra truly just suffered in misery in all the present chapters there was not ONE happy moment truly the author liked making her suffer I feel so bad for petra😭 she needs all the happiness this world has to offer. Even her last was so heartbreaking and I was so close to crying ...and still after all this she can continue on and even stronger than before

this book felt more like a set up for the series honestly and I truly loved it but it did feel the pacing was a bit weird?? Idk how to explain it because i still devoured this book SO FAST but there was something about it. Also too much depressing times I need more happiness in book 2😭🙏 BUT THE WORLDBUILDING. I love the magic system and tbh I still have some questions about some stuff but ik theyll be answered soon enough

"You’re a warrior. You’ve always been a warrior, fire burned and ocean tumbled.”

And the romance... it's definitely slow burn but its also not and ik that makes sense but i sense there is sm potential for it to develop in book 2. I will say no names though because theres a lot to it. He is the absolute sweetest though and I cannot wait to see more of him!!

lol I will say I'm glad the cliffhanger doesnt feel so terrible to wait for book 2. just my luck though it comes out in july!! Cant wait to be reunited with Petra being even more of a queen than she already is

edit after 30 min of scrolling through teasers for book 2: i take back everything i said about the wait not being torturous THE AMT OF QNS I HAVE ??? my excitement knows no bounds omg

Actually fucked up about this book!! It kept showing glimmers of potential so I kept reading and didn’t just Dnf and it just missed every single time!! Like blue balls for plot?? Actually upset!

One- the writing needs to be edited fo sure because it drags along but I need to list all the disappointments of this plot-wise or I will combust.

1.) why the fuck does Petra force the little jaunt to get biscuits!? Also after hearing Castemont she still thought Wren was going to get off without death!? This felt like a super shitty point to get the plot moving against C but like?? makes Petra look horrible and she does NAWT feel enough guilt for it literally being her fault!! Author could have had C find out another way without Petra making this dumb and selfish decision if she wanted us to like her??

2.) why does Petra suck??? Like she literally did not Act once in this book!!! You think she is going to kill the board of blood dudes with the dagger? Nope. Despite there being the whole monologue about taking them down with her. You think she is going to kill Castemont after he reveals he killed her dad?? Nope!! Just some cool divine fire that kills rando guards I guess?? Reading the scene with her sister’s death I didn’t think she had any reason to ~actually~ feel guilty but the rest of the book makes me think omg this bitch does not move!!!

3.) I honestly kept reading because it’s pretty obvious Cal isn’t dead and I wanted to see who he turned out to be. The scene where he takes Petra to the king’s bedroom is like obvious as to who he is but then there is just so many questions… like if he is king that means he has to be complicit in the initiations??? And also was confused by the presence of Miles- thought that may somehow be him but then it turns out it isnt and kinda feels like an annoying love triangle setup? MOST UPSETTING was the reveal to Petra of cal as king and like there is literally NO explanation for why he left her and faked his death lmao? Or Castemont faked his death or something? Leaving her dad’s cloak literally did not make any fucking sense to me ?? There was NO WAY to reach Petra in writing or something?? And again- initiation??

Again fucked up over this! It has all the elements I would usually like in a fantasy romance but somehow just misses all the beats?? But leaves just enough hope that it might hit the next one?? frustrating baby!

One of my favorite books of the year!!! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Five brilliant stars to this masterpiece. All the work put into this debut novel, the author it’s a genius. This is the first book of Benevolence & Blood series. And I have to say that it was an AMAZING way to start this series.

It’s a dark fantasy romance, with some spicy… and Slowburn romance.
AND I LOVED IT? ABSOLUTELY YES!!!

I really liked the past and present POV from the main character, all the chapters were connected and I really enjoyed that. It was a very good way to introduce the past of Petra 4 years ago to the present.

“You’re a warrior. You’ve always been a warrior, fire burned and ocean tumbled.”

Petra’s life has been full of tragedy and loss, yet she still strong. Petra has being through a lot and she faces everything. I can’t wait to see her grow into the bad ass I know she will be. I liked being in her head, I was able to empathize with her and get to know her feelings, her personality. How loyal she is.

I was fire, I was light, I was the rage of the sea
and the fury of thunder. I was fire burned and ocean tumbled.

The slow romance in this book was full of sweetness and sometimes it was hot. “ …because the moment I saw you, I knew I needed you.” My voice shook. “You knew?” “Like it was all I’d ever known.”
I could say a lot of things but I will not say spoilers. All I can say it’s that I can’t wait for the second book.

let’s talk about the world building: A unique world with good development. The societies and the nations are led by the twisted beliefs and ideals from the real courts. Most of the people in the nations think that these horrific acts are valid and they find honor in those acts. The religion it’s part of the important things of the story. Benevolent saints x Blood saints, dark secrets, twisted plans.
Fanatic groups and graphic violence.

If you want to read a book with action, plot twists, tension, dark fantasy. You should really read The Sin Of Saints.

Laureen it’s so brilliant, she created an amazing story. I’m so excited for the second book, thank you so much for this ARC, I loved it. Thank you so so much.

There’s some trigger warnings include, drug abuse, torture, graphic content and violence, death. And it’s a unique and addicting story. The world building it’s excellent, there’s a lot of suspense and secrets.

¿Y ME ENCANTÓ? MUCHÍSIMO!

Me gustó mucho la narración pasado y presente del personaje principal, todos los capítulos estaban conectados y lo disfruté mucho. Fue una muy buena manera de introducir el pasado de Petra 4 años atrás al presente.

“You’re a warrior. You’ve always been a warrior, fire burned and ocean tumbled.”

I was fire, I was light, I was the rage of the sea
and the fury of thunder. I was fire burned and ocean tumbled.

El lento romance de este libro estaba lleno de dulzura y a veces candente “…because the moment I saw you, I knew I needed you.” My voice shook. “You knew?” “Like it was all I’d ever known.”

Deberían si o si leer The Sin Of Saints.

Laureen es muy brillante! Creó una historia maravillosa. Estoy muy emocionada por el segundo libro! No puedo esperar a leerlo.

Review:
I’m in the minority here, but this one was just not working for me 😔
I’m over 30% in and I still don’t know what the plot is and we’ve only had 2 small friendly interactions between what I’m assuming will be the love interest - so almost no romance. So the pacing felt extremely slow and I was just bored. Also, I felt there was almost no world building at this point… Is it a fantasy world? Is there magic?? I don’t know… All I know is that there are some Saints, which are like Gods I’m assuming? And some bad people on like a council?

Another issue is, and this is a personal thing, but I wasn’t a fan of the writing style with the alternating chapters between the ‘now’ and ‘then’.
From what I had read of the ‘then’ chapters, I thought they could have been summed up in a prologue and have been more effective. Those particular chapters felt like an overly wordy timeline of traumatic events that were unnecessarily long and repetitive. I felt for her father’s condition and the impact on her family, but I felt like it was repeated in every chapter and described in unnecessary detail.

With every ‘now’ chapter when I just started to become a little intrigued about where storyline was heading, the chapter ended (on a cliffhanger as well) and I had to then suffer through another past chapter… It took me out of the story every time and made for a frustrating read for me.
Another issue I had with the present timeline, was that there were a few side characters whose only contribution seemed to be to answer Petra’s q’s and provide us readers with an info dump.

I also became sick of Petra using ‘saints’ as a curse, the word felt really overused.

I may pick it back up at some point because people seem to really love it and I feel like I’m missing out on a good thing. And so maybe it gets better 🤷🏼‍♀️ but my TBR is too long at this point to read books I'm not enjoying by 30% in.

The 2⭐️ is because the cover is absolutely stunning and like I said the 'now' chapters are somewhat interesting enough to pick this up again.

Excuse me? The Sin of Saints took me by surprise. Petra was put through the ringer, quite literally. This story was dark and twisted. But it sunk its claws into me and didn’t let go until the very last word. I was on the edge of my seat for the entirety of this story. This book was light in the romance, but what we do see is 🔥. I am hoping we see more in the next installment!! That ending has my mind blown. I am very much looking forward to book 2!

DNF at 176 pages... I thought this was a romance but I'm almost 200 pages in and so far there's not a lick of romance and everythingggg horrible - and I mean gut-wrenching horrible that could possibly happen to the FMC has. There's been no "good" or light moments, so the book is just kind of depressing. I might pick it up again in the future, but I don't know at the moment.

‘Are you okay?’ you ask. No, definitely not okay.
This book created a crater in my chest and I imagine it will only deepen as I wait for the second book in the series.

For a fantasy novel, this book hits high marks:

-excellent characters;
-solid world building;
-multiple problems directly and indirectly impacting the MC;
-fantastical, creatively described beasts;
-mysteries, secrets, intrigue;

And, keep in mind, this isn’t JUST a fantasy novel, there is a healthy dose of romance.

Throw in an MC who asks All.The.Questions. Not just the kind of questions that explore the world, the kind that impact a thought process or one’s emotions, making the MC more relatable

The flow is fantastic, the storytelling unique with alternating past and present day chapters. For a debut novel, this reads like an experienced author wrote it.

A new author, a new story - an original story - I can totally get behind The Benevolence & Blood Series.

Please note, I was a Beta reader and did not read the final version at the time of this initial review.

This book was dark, gritty and had a good mystery! It’s written in a “past” - “present” story line that I actually liked!

The female MC started out a young woman raised in a shitty part of town and through tragedy, pretty much became a street rat to keep her family fed. Fate intervenes at every turn throughout her life with more tests of her will and sanity. She remains a street rat through and through— never a lady… even when fate brings her into the home of a lord willing to take care of her family and love them like his own.

She isn’t grateful. She isn’t nice. She’s rude, mad at the world and spiteful. I have a feeling this is going to be the beginning of a villain origin story and I’m curious to see where this goes!

This was my first book with then and now POV from the main character and I loved it! It all came together perfectly but still kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time! When I say shit goes down, I’m not kidding! Overall it gave me FBAA/ToG vibes and I can’t wait to see Petra grow into the strong bad ass I know she can be! I’m so excited for the next book already because this story is just getting started 🔥

This is a dark fantasy with dark themes and explicit language. Trigger warnings to be aware of but not limited to :

Reference to miscarriage
sexual assault
death of family
violence
gore

Dark themes: PTSD, survivor’s guilt, depression, thoughts of suicide.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This book has left me heartbroken and in search of answers that only Petra and the Saints can give. Petra’s story of her survival after so many tragedies is one that completely captivated my attention. She is an incredibly strong female character who is so impeccably flawed that I still can’t believe she’s fictional.

The world-building and pace of TSOS are done extraordinarily well and ensured that I kept reading long after I said, “one more chapter.”

While there is a little romance, this first book of the Benevolence and Blood series focuses on Petra and her emotional and mental journey- and I look forward to seeing how her character progresses throughout the series.

I do wish the romance between Calomyr and Petra had been more fleshed out and given more page time.

Tropes to be found:

Chosen one
Rags to Riches
Magic
Hidden Identity
Emotional Damage✨

I recommend this for all dark fantasy lovers! Great for fans of From Blood and Ash, Hunger Games, and Throne of Glass.

Thank you Lauren Leasure for this Earc of The Sin of Saints!

“Fire burned and ocean tumbled”
Petra has been through the wringer. She’s lost a lot and had to grow up at a young age (relatable). But her story isn’t done.

Lauren M. Leasure weaves a story that is perfect for lovers of SJM, JLA, and Raven Kennedy. There is plot twist after plot twist (seriously the plot twists never stopped). I came to love Petra quickly, especially because she curses like a sailor. I can’t wait to see where her journey takes her. I also love the change from a morally grey love interest to a morally grey female main character. Petra is far from perfect but that’s what we love about our girl.

If you are looking for a Romantasy that will keep you on your toes, this is the one.

GIMME BOOK 2 NOW PLS!!!!!

5⭐️ on the reread.

"I was a phoenix, and I would rise in a burst of fire or die setting everything ablaze."

Ughhh this book had me ON THE EDGE OF MY SEAT.

She’s plot-heavy and light on the spice, which I actually LOVED (I know, I’m shocked too.) So don’t go in thinking you’re getting a super smutty read bc it’s “dark” fantasy romance - it’s GORY dark lol these people out here getting tortured 😭

Did I predict one of the plot twists? Yes. Do I care? NOOOOPE.

Immediately diving into TBOB!!

What to expect:
- dark FANTASY romance
- prophecy
- emotional damage
- dual timeline

“You’re a warrior. You’ve always been a warrior, fire burned and ocean tumbled.”
“Fire burned and ocean tumbled?”
“A stone can be put to the fire and end up burned, but it will not crumble. It can be thrown around by the sea, jagged edges smoothed by the waves, but it will not crumble.”

It´s a no from me...
For it being marketed as a romantasy, there is surprisingly little romance in here. I would not recommend this book if you are looking for that. There will be no spicy scenes, no kissing, not even flirting. The romance is basically non existant.
My other issue with this book was the split in "then" and "now" and the constant change between both timelines with each chapter. It made the storyline extremely tough to read, especially with each chapter ending in a cliffhanger. Another problem for me was the pacing, it felt incredibly slow and over the span of the whole book maybe three "real" events took place in the now timeline.
It just wasn´t for me.

What. The. Heck.
Where is book 2?!
This was such a great way to start off 2023!
The world crafting, the characters, the relationships, the past/present and the pain and complexity of Petra’s past and present life experiences all combined to make this book so hard to put down. I guarantee you if I wasn’t working 50 hour work weeks, being a mom, and trying to keep my sanity I would have EASILY finished this in one day.
I haven’t read and been captivated by a good fantasy world in so long and it felt great to lose myself in this story. I can’t wait for book 2! Really impressed with this author.

Holy Saints the past vs present chapters back to back were done to an insanely perfect rhythm. I can’t imagine that’s easy to put on words back and forth like that but, boy, did Lauren knock it out of the park.
The fantasy was easy to grab on to, understandable world building, dark storytelling, heart clenching romance, character tension, gripping the kindle to points where I thought I would bend it.

This entire book I was thinking one thing and then at the end BAM I couldn’t be more wrong. And I LOVE when books do that to me.
The last sentence cliffhanger… HELLO??????

Overall rating: 4.65 stars ⭐️ would HIGHLY recommend, very very excited for the next one in the series!

2 Stars - DNF @ 42%

I'm going to DNF this and maybe revisit another time. Unfortunately, I really don't like Petra. I find her incredibly stupid, rash, and annoying. Her survival instincts, beyond stealing to feed her extremely poor family, are non-existent.

This story is told with dual timeline POVs. Petra "Now" and Petra "Then". I hate it for some reason? It seems like a super clunky way to tell the story, and going back and forth between the two is just frustrating. It's making me not care for either POV because I'm not getting the full story anywhere... I wouldn't mind if the first, say 20% was written as a dual timeline, but now it's just annoying.

I thought this was more of a dark romance, but there is basically none in this so far - not even a real prospect introduced. The plot is slogging along. Oh yeah, and even outside of how much I dislike Petra, literally EVERY single character is unlikable. Her mother? Absolutely terrible, stupid, and doesn't care for her only remaining child. Her mother's husband? Awful, basically in a weird cult within their political system. Are there any other characters? Well, like 3 others, but they all are currently dead.

Anyways, this is a bust for me and I'm super disappointed seeing as this has a ton of great reviews.

DNF. I felt the pacing was slow and I couldn't get into the dialogue. It sounded off.

I didn't know what I was expecting when I started this book, but it most definitely wasn't this. I just finished it like 10 minutes ago and immediately ran to GR to rate it lol.

I can't stress how much I enjoyed this book. I loved the dual POV and time gap, and there were multiple points where I thought I knew what was coming and was surprised.

Absolutely cannot wait for book 2, such an intriguing set up.

Petra's life is loss and destruction. When the sun shines, it's only a beacon for the rain. When a child laughs, the sound calls death. Joy leads nowhere but darkest depths of sorrow, and love is only made to be shattered.

Her world is brutality, hatred, and blood - but none of this defines her. I fell in love with Petra. All her rough edges and broken pieces make her so very real and I root for her, page after page, without fail.

This book has so many triggers I can't even begin to list them. But it was flawless.

The side characters are many, and layered but I can't mention any of them without giving things away. The people are woven flawlessly into the plot and all I can say is, don't read this if you're sensitive or depressed. It will absolutely demolish you.

*********

Note to self. This is the book with the guy who has heterochromia and the cave filled with sparkles. That should ring a bell if I come back for a reread later. Hopefully. 🤭

Loved this book, couldn't put it down. I am a huge fan of fantasy and this touched all the right notes without being cliché. It also has some spice that is exceptionally well done. I love the perfectly imperfect female lead who grabs you from the opening lines and doesn't let go. Highly recommend and can't wait for the next book!

Woman trying to survive a life of poverty is now trying to survive the politics and war games of royalty.

My girl Petra has lived like 3 lifetimes worth of trauma by the time the book finishes. There's a content warning at the beginning of the book but I was not prepared for the mountain of tragedy and gore. I'm upset but also, I absolutely loved it? I am usually squeamish about gore and horror, but it doesn't feel gratuitous in this story. It makes sense for the insanity of the world that she's in.

There's a lot of talk about mental health, and some of these lines hit hard.
It will never stop hurting. It will be a part of the load you carry for the rest of your life. And that load will never get lighter, rather you will grow stronger.

Petra suffers through so much but she becomes a stronger person through each experience.

The setting, the characters, and the gradual reveal of w.t.f. is going on regarding Petra. I'm all for it. Please release the next book now! 😫

It's a difficult book to review - the plot was good and interesting, the characters were good. But the world building was bad - like really bad. I finished the book and I still had no glue how many kingdoms there were, who were the kings, how were they all related. Maybe it's a me problem and I missed something but most of the information was given as a dump in like 10 pages and honestly I didn't have enough energy to try to keep up with it. Also what was going on with the Saints? Because again no clue...

But otherwise a solid book and will probably read the second one as well for the story. (Maybe the author could do a little recap?)
