Okay, so my mom's been harboring some hefty family secrets. Big deal.
And, yeah, maybe there are still two or three teensy details about Zayn that I don't know – his backstory, his private life, or his real name, for starters.
Oh, and let's not forget that there's a bloodthirsty, power-hungry, magical mob boss who's due to appear at any moment. No biggie.
So long as there are no more family bombshells, incubus-related heartbreaks, or unexpected, terrifying journeys into the Fae Realm, I'll be completely fine. Because, as I've already reminded myself at least twelve times since breakfast, there's no way things could possibly get worse.

After reading and practically falling in love with the Lightning Conjurer series, Rachel Rener has become one of my auto-buy authors. And Inked was even better! Suffice it to say, by that point, it was already crystal clear I'd read anything this author wrote, even if she wrote it on a damn toilet paper.
It took me a while to get to Jinxed, because life sometimes has a way of kicking you in the balls when you least expect it, and you do need some time to get back up. But I wouldn't have missed it for the world. I was expecting it to be great, because each of this author's books seems to be even better than the other. But it wasn't great. It was fricking FABULOUS!
This is one book that will swath your heart like a warm security blanket. It's a book that will have you sigh and cry, then laugh out loud while crying. It's a book that will have you snapping at everyone who wants to interrupt your reading time because you just need to know what happens next! (*cough* - been there, done that.)
Jinxed kicks off straight after the events of Inked. And if you haven't read that, you're seriously missing out. As far as the plot's concerned... you're gonna have to read the book to find it out (*slapping a big duct tape on the mouth to prevent myself from accidental spoiler gushing*)
What I need to tell you though is what to expect. Cause you've got to be ready for all that! Or maybe not. (*smirk*)
The troubles of Talia and Zayn were by far not over at the end of book 1 and here, in Jinxed, we get to see the shit properly hit the fan. So get ready for a hell lot of trouble. From a bloodthirsty, power-hungry, magical mob boss, to another unexpected, terrifying journey into the Fae Realm, incubus-related heartbreak of course, and perhaps the worst of all, a riled up worried mom harbouring some hefty family secrets.
With a 'figure-it-out as I go' plan of an untrained rookie trying to pull off an intradimensioanl prison break nothing can go wrong, right? Apart from everyone involved being royally screwed of course. The stakes are higher than ever before, the villains more despicable, and the fae world practically blooms with wonderful creatures. Even the scary wonderful kind.
The sexy irresistible overprotective stupidly attractive incubus is just as perfect as before. OK! Fine. Even more perfect! But I swear there were a couple of times in which I wanted to smack the idjit over the back of his head! 'Zayn baby, I love you to pieces! But sometimes you can be so stupid!!! Give the girl some credit will ya!! She's badass!!'
OK. I'm good. Rant over. Let's move on.
To Talia of course who is by now one of my all-time favourites. So brave and selfless and totally awesome!! Everyone will love Talia because her heart may just shine brighter than her gilded blood. And Talia high on truffles is outstanding!! Before you ask, she isn't perfect. She blunders and messes up, puts her foot in the mouth at the most inopportune moments and rushes head-long into danger at others. And she admits it all outright with an irresistible self deprecating humour, lots of wit and charm. Talia is one character that's remarkably written.
And don't even get me started on the fluff butt! Because damn!! That small floofy baby will have anyone melt into a big puddle of adoring goo. Even those readers with about as much maternal instinct as a hamster. The fluff butt steals the show! When it's not stolen by Talia's mother. That woman rocks!
Then there's the love, and the feeling! Glorious love full of hunger, need and pain. The kind that makes you sigh at a touch and gets you close to tears because of yearning. The irresistible kind Anne Bishop gives us in Sebastian. My favourite incubus love story ever! Jinxed has just landed on the same shelf with that, because it's just as beautifully written.
The plot is fast-paced and action packed, despite everything taking place during a single weekend. The tension is just right to keep you at the edge of your seat. Maybe consider putting some cream on your nails to stop from biting them. Not that I did. (*cough* maybe just a bit) And the prose flows like a charm - except for the times when you get chocked with something from laughing so hard. (*Note to self - do not read a Rachel Rener book again while drinking or eating. Or else.*)
I'll put an end to this review before I piss you all off with way too much gushing. But before I pack up my quill and parchment, one last piece of advice, from a Bookdragon to another.
Do yourself a favour and read Jinxed!
Till next time everyone, Happy Jinxed reading and be kind.
P.S. Rachel Rener, if you're ever reading this review... could you please point me into the right direction to get myself a little fluff butt and that totally awesome sling bag which would make even Hermione jealous? Because I want them. Bad!! And write that sequel faster!! I want that too! Like... yesterday!
I'm enjoying this series so much. Jinxed is the second book in the Gilded Blood series. Talia once again finds herself in trouble, alongside her hot incubus boyfriend Zayn and the snarky but beautiful Biscuit.
We get to meet new characters, including the villianous Sol. I really grew to like Korinne, the elf who was enslaved to Sol.The stakes were higher in this book and I kept wondering how Talia was going to get out of the pickles she kept getting herself into. I loved her sassy humor and loyalty.
The ending of this book was really great. Can't wait to start the next one!
Jinxed picks up right where Inked left off, with Talia's eyes opened to a wider world she had no idea existed before using Zayn's forbidden ink, and in this fast-paced, page-turning sequel, Rachel Rener reveals even more of the world she's created with the poise of a master.
We get a better glimpse of how everything works in the universe(s?) of Gilded Blood; more runes, more factions, more races, and a smorgasbord of ways to travel between the human and fae realm. At one point I laughed and imagined the jealousy devouring Hermione Granger at a certain magical something.
The book is funny, too. Very funny. There's a particular running joke about Hollywood's Legion of Chris', and a number of humorous passages inspired by uber-relaxing truffles. Dee-Dee makes a welcome return, too, and an early scene with her is just an utter delight. Talia, just as in Inked, provides a brilliantly witty narration, and is a fully-formed character who Rener constantly challenges throughout the book.
Because make no mistake, this book is challenging, and I believe that's only a good thing. There is plenty here for returning readers who loved Inked to enjoy, but Rener isn't about only pleasing people. The story comes first, and the challenge the characters face is front and centre, so Rener makes certain decisions that might upset some readers who wanted nothing more than "more of the same." I feel her decisions more than pay off, and the story, characters and world she's created is better off for it.
In all, I think this is an improvement on an already excellent first book. The stakes are high, the central villain is someone you truly love to hate, there's extra intrigue even when lingering questions are answered, there's Metallica, Mer-Nipples, steam and a certain wonderful avian.
I've read all of Rachel Rener's work, and feel especially lucky to have thrown my eyes across Jinxed early. Every one of her books has been an improvement on her last, and Jinxed is, for sure, the author's best work so far.
Rachel! You've done it again, although this time I'm late to bed on a work night rather than late for work!! Could not put it down once I was in the last 20+%!!!
I'm sure everyone that's loved Inked will be smitten with Jinxed how could they not be it's everything they've loved and soo much more 😘
I'm so grateful to have gotten my hands on an ARC copy because I was sooo eager to read the next part of the story after reading Inked as the July featured read.
This book was everything I'd hoped for and more and had all the feels. There's love, laughter, loyalty, fear, sadness, loathing (I love that word) and sooo much more.
I won't comment on the plot etc, cause I'll only get carried away and tell you far too much xx
The only problem with an ARC is that it's soooo much longer till the next one 😭😭😭😭😭
Well what can I say book to outstanding I loved this book but one was fantastic and book to definitely did not disappoint love the main character she is headstrong an absolutely brilliant loving her new style completely in love with Zayn loves his character this book was so full of action, love and laughter, this book and book one I like nothing you have ever read before both books will hook you from the start I couldn't put this book down the adventure is so gripping that you're scared to stop reading in case you miss anything, this offer actually makes you feel like you're in this book this is happening to you and I would so love if my tattoos came to life
This was absolutely fantastic! Somehow even better than book 1. Talia kept stumbling herself into trouble at each turn and I kept wondering how things could ever get turned back around. And that ending! I have so many questions and I can't wait for book 3 so they can get answered.
Jinxed is an emotional typhoon that sucks you up, deposits you on the shore to get caught in a rip tide and claw your way out with a ton of sand all over you. What a ride. Oi!
In this second book of the Gilded Blood series hurricanes seem to be a theme - real and emotionally. Talia finds herself in totally new territory with Zayn and the arch nemesis, Sol. The adventure takes us in and out of "our" realm and the Fae realm - sometimes in a matter of seconds. Talia has to call all of her strengths, her innate talents that she only is just realizing she possesses, and that sassy quick witted charm.
Zayn has his own very serious struggles with accepting who he is, accepting Talia and his feelings for her. And their shared responsibility. Read the book for more on that tidbit.
I adore some of the new characters and some familiar ones from Inked. Talia's mother is a delight. I'm not sure Talia concurs (yes, deep down she does).
I definitely enjoyed this book and Rachel Rener is now on my must keep reading list.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I loved the love story between Talia and Zayn-- even though I normally can't stand when two people love each other, but sacrifice that love for.... Reasons-- because life is short and who has time for that? However this story is one of those stories that grabs your attention from the first page and never lets you go until you read the last.
Not only is Talia amazing, but she is so incredibly filled with life and, dare I say it, chutzpah. I loved how she made friends everywhere she went.
Finally, Ms. Rener fills her pages with characters so filled with life, you wish you had them in your life. Talia's mother continues to be a force of nature! But my heart belongs to Biscuit, bless his almond-loving heart!!
I received an advanced copy and am leaving this review voluntarily!!!
OMG! Loved the second book just as much as I loved the first one. Jinxed picked up right after the first book, which I liked. Love Dee Dee, she has some of the best interactions with the MC's. Also gotta love to hate Sol, something about him I can't quite put my finger on it. Looking forward to the third and maybe final book, maybe not the final book. Hmmm will Talia have a new hair color in the next book, or will it still be blue? I think if my dad was still around, he would have discovered Ms. Rener by accident, he was an avid Fantasy reader. All I can say is that Jinxed was highly enjoyable, humorous and would definitely reread. I was given an ARC by the author for an honest review.
The second books takes place just after the first. I love Talia's mom! LOVE HER! Sol, our ultra evil villein now knows about Talia and her super special blood. In the race to free Zayn Talia learns about this new, amazing and scary world she belongs to. Oh, and Biscuit, I love Biscuit!
This book picks up right where book 1 leaves off. You start getting answers right away and I really appreciate that as a reader. There is non-stop movement from one plot point to the next which is also something else I appreciate. There's no drag, no settling down just to gear up for the next thing. It's one of the things I've come to really love about Rener's writing style.
I imagine the reading experience as if someone has offered their time to sit down and read you a story from start to finish in one fell swoop. Because that's how easy it is to get through. One quickly flipped page to the next. It reminds me of the grandfather reading The Princess Bride to his grandson who cannot get enough of the story. He asks questions and is deeply invested and enveloped from page one. Exactly like I was with Jinxed. But the similarities stop there because this is not a children's story. :)
Another thing I loved about book 1 and book 2 are how real the characters feel. Flawed and imperfect though they are (just like you and I), they learn so much more about themselves and what they're fully capable of over time and through very difficult situations. And we get brand new facets of their personalities that create an even deeper connection to them as we continue on their journey.
Talia is hilarious. Plain and simple. I really like when characters don't take themselves too seriously, and she is perfect at giving you the exact right amount of comic relief in circumstances that would break the best of heroines. She also gets to tap into her own powers and see that she is much more capable than what she ever gave herself credit for.
We don't see a ton of Zayn on-screen. He's humbled to a fraction of himself, but this is a very important to Talia's character arc as well as his own. We also get to unravel many of the puzzles that shroud him throughout book 1. But let me tell you, he is EXACTLY who you want by your side with his level of loyalty, knowledge, and sheer good looks. *side-eye winks at Zayn*
This book is just MORE. It's more of what you loved from book 1, more action, more characters who come to the playing board who are both good and bad, more Biscuit, MORE BISCUITTTTT!
I loved the new found friendships that are brewing and the gorgeous scenery of the Fae Realm. There is A LOT at stake, and both Talia and Zayn have a daunting journey ahead of them if they are to succeed with whats to come. And I cannot wait for it.
Their chemistry is off the charts, another major plus!
Even if you think you're not a fan of Contemporary Fantasy... you will be soon if you choose to start this series! Trust me.
Jinxed by Rachel Rener is a fantastic continuation of the Gilded Blood Series. It's going to be hard to put into words all the many great things that come through to the reader while reading this story, but goodness I'm going to do my best.
We start with a hilarious opening, which had me thinking at first, "WOW. THAT WAS FAST." Only for me to realize the author was messing with me in just the first couple paragraphs - oh...this is not a sex scene!! PHEW. This is a joke poking at the fact there are lots of romantic scenes in this book and the previous, that I jumped to assumptions as I'm sure many other readers do. The humor in this book is top tier and really unmatched by anything I have read before it. And then we jump right into the thick of it. This book is action-packed and fast paced. We meet the villain early on and boy howdy, do you love to hate him...or is it hate to love him? He is an incubi... and a bit of a mob boss. He comes across our main character and he wants her, BAD. But not because he loves her - but rather he just wants to use her for his own personal gains. And so the story takes off and we are whisked away once again in the Fae Realm.
I have two favorite parts of this book. #1, there be dragons. And #2, There is a scene later in the book which I won't spoil, but the relationship between the main characters just about had me in tears because I loved what they shared together. It was only a brief moment but it was the BEST moment. It had my heart aching for them to be together, despite all the many conflicts presented in this addition.
I can't really express into words how unique of a story Rachel Rener has created. But everyone reading this review, should absolutely put aside some personal time for this one and do themselves a favor and READ IT NOW. This story really filled my cup with a fuel that will have me creating art year-round with vigor. Big thanks to Rachel for the hours she spends in her craft, making it a little easier for us to believe in the magic of our very own world. This book made me realize, magic really is there...if you just know where to look.
Jinxed, the second book in the Gilded Blood series begins where Inked left of. Talia and Zayn’s “will they won’t they” love story continues. They are unable to resist each other yet Zayn is convinced he would be deadly for Talia and pushes her away for her own safety.
“No wonder we pushed and pulled at one another like a pair of revolving magnets. Neither one of us wanted to hurt the other. Neither one of us wanted to be hurt.”
Unfortunately she still ends up in the clutches of the Incubus Godfather, Sol, who intends to claim her for her gold blood. In Jinxed the stakes are high, Sol doesn’t take betrayal lightly and banishes Zayn to a purgatory dimension hidden within a Miami nightclub’s broom closet - which no one else can see or access - how will Talia ever be able to save him this time!
Baby Biscuit is a very cute and adorable incarnation of Zayn’s tattoo based familiar - now shared with Talia, whose unexpected family history is revealed in this book and comes in very handy when she wants to escape a dangerous and scary scene. Biscuit’s link between Zayn and Talia may just turn out to be the lifeline they both need.
Jinxed was easily as good as Inked, if not better - it was a page turner right from the start!
Inked was absolutely stunning and amazing. It was a truly incredible book 1. Book 2s are tricky beasts, because usually they sag or break EVERYTHING until you just want to cry.
Jinxed did not have these problems. Yes, it broke many things. But we also got to dive even deeper into the world. We learned some major bombshell secrets, and we get our heart ripped up and sewn back together multiple times.
All while Talia, our relatable, hilarious MC, is doing her very best in a truly horrific situation. She handles everything thrown at her with--well, maybe not grace. But with gusto and the creativity that she specializes in, playing every situation to her strengths.
Zayn has less screentime in this book, but it is still a pretty spicy read, and I absolutely love the progression of the romance. He's seriously such an amazing, caring character.
I LUB BISCUIT. THAT IS ALL.
All in all, this book has breakneck pacing, soooo many laugh-out-loud moments, and will leave your emotions in that satisfying mix of wrung-out and bursting that you only get from a great book.
I received an ARC and I am reviewing this willingly because it is absolutely fantastic.
I am so lucky to have been accepted to join Rachel’s arc team after how much I enjoyed Inked, the first book in this series. I was really excited to read this second book and Rachel did not disappoint!
Talia has just discovered, and returned from, the fae realm. She had no idea she was descended from fae until the middle of the first book, and is still coming to terms with this knowledge, as well as having LOTS of unanswered questions!
Zayn needs to face off with his (ex)mob boss who has been controlling him for years, and Talia wants to help although he is aware of how dangerous it will be.
The book is full of suspense and humour, twists and surprises, fabulous characters and excellent world building that together make the book totally unputdownable!
Besides Zayn, Talia, Dee Dee and ‘biscuit’, Korinne is one of my favourite characters with her strength of wit and willingness to help Talia.
I am really excited to see what direction book 3 goes in, I’m not sure how I will cope with waiting so long for it to be written but I have no choice!
I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving my honest review
Be jealous. I got to read this book BEFORE it’s release thanks to Rachel and an ARC copy.
If you liked Inked, you’ll love Jinxed. In the first few chapters, I laughed, I cried, I snuggled in with all the happy feelings. Dee Dee, Talia’s mother, is everything you didn’t know you wanted or needed. And a certain familiar we all know, love, and keep almonds on hand for *just in case he shows up here* returns, definitely stealing the show throughout the book.
Then things get dark and dramatic as Talia enters the Fae Realm again. *dun dun dunnnn* The baddest of guys, the Chrisest of Chrises, and the most unlikely allies, lead you into the darkest corners of the Fae Realm (okay, maybe ‘lushly appointed quarters’ might be more appropriate) and the darkest hearts. We learn more about Talia and her secrets, but there are still secrets kept hidden. And the cliff-hanger! When is Linked coming out?!?
We join Talia and Zayne after the crazy adventures of Inked and then no one gets to sleep or breath deeply for the entire book!
Talia gets thrown into one shit storm after the other and we get so many more portal jumps then book one.
And then, as if that isn’t crazy enough? The author throws poor Talia into high heels … HIGH HEELS!!!
The humour is spot on, I laughed so hard, mostly from Talia’s internal thoughts and dialogues.
‘Grimacing at my own monumental awkwardness’
This character is a freakin hoot. From her being a hot mess, to pop culture references, to zinger dialogue. And then we get the darkness, the anxiety spikes, the complete upped ante, and the best side characters. KoKo is my new favourite person … I want a book of her back story damn it, Rachel!
Either way, go check this book out. I’m chilling at the bit for the next instalment.
Ooo this one was interestingggg. Not gonna lie, I wanted to stick around in the human world because I’ve been off fantasy realm books for a little while but it was so charming that it made up for it.
Not to mention the writing in this book made me audibly snort so many times I honestly lost count. The humour was incredible with perfect comedic timing. The swoony ,squishy moments were sweet as pie. The new odd friends Talia made every two seconds made my heart dance a little Irish jig. Biscuit…. I would die for him. He’s the most precious and wholesome crackhead sidekick/grandbirdy. And Talia’s mom has me in a chokehold. I would pay good money to read about her daily life. 💙
I honestly and thoroughly enjoyed this book and I’m very excited for the next one although hesitant because then there’s only one left after that and I have to say goodbye ☹️
Rachel Rener has knocked another book out of the park! These books have all the best qualities: humor, deep emotions, drama, great imagination, and of course excellent writing. I have become so invested in these characters that I don’t want the third book to be the end. But you know what would be amazing? A prequel series about Dee Dee and Howard!! Honestly, I can’t wait til the next book!! I read a complimentary Advanced Reader Copy of this book & am voluntarily leaving an honest and unbiased review.
Love love love Rachel’s storytelling! I want my review to do her justice as she is an up and coming author who deserves to be noticed and read! I have enjoyed all of her books, but they truly keep getting better and better. She has a talent for vivid world-building and bringing to life characters that you can’t help but love. I devoured Inked, and honestly enjoyed Jinxed even more. Needless to say, I’ll be on pins and needles until the next book comes out!
I'm gonna bite the bullet. I thought everyone was exaggerating when they praised these books to the skyes but hey, free is good right? So I downloaded the first book to see what it was about.
The worst part? I almost missed my train cuz I was so engrossed in the stupid book. So yeah, I bought the next one and now I can't wait for the third one. And I promised myself not to buy any more books. Guess I broke that promise, huh
Around midnight I wrote my review for the first book Inked. I said I was excited for the second, but wasn't going to start it right away. However its now almost 4am and I'm writing a second review.
Once again I was drawn into the magic and ink world of Talia and Zayn. Once again I couldn't put it down.
I will *not* open the third tonight, but I will say that if it is as good as the first two - it will be finished tomorrow
I can’t help but love this series! At times I wonder if it’s pushing it with the fact that it’s romanticising the idea of an incubus (a demon who feeds off sexual energy) but then I think, we’ll what’s the difference from this and romanticising vampires which I enjoyed, so then I gave myself permission to fully accept it and admit that I bloody love this story 😂 Again it’s not quite a 5 star because some of the ‘spice’ just isn’t to my taste but I don’t really have anything to compare it to book-wise other than 50 Shades which is pure and utter filth (which I did not read for enjoyment btw, only purely out of curiosity as to wth everyone was going on about lol) and this is DEFINITELY NOT THAT so perhaps it’s actually quite mild compared to other books haha. I’ve not read Sarah J Maas yet and I hear her books are spicy so I’m eager to read and compare when the time comes haha.
Despite not being 100% on board with the spice within this book, I just couldn’t stop reading it and it’s not bombarding you either which I appreciate. There’s definitely more story than sexy times haha.
I am loving the world and characters that have been built and continuously developing. There’s so many varieties of mythical/magical creatures/fae it’s exciting and never dull! I love how Zayne and Talia’s characters have evolved in this book including Biscuit. I can’t wait to read the next instalment.
I’m really enjoying this series, and I’m really glad I decided to start reading it!
I love how we learnt more about her heritage in this book, we learnt more about her parents and their lineage and I found it really interesting! We also learnt more about Zayn, (aka hot incubus boss, if you read my last review) which I enjoyed also!
Jinxed wasn’t just full of heart racing action, but it also took the time to further build on the relationships formed between characters in Inked, and also fostered some newly budding friendships which were one of my favourite parts of this book (I do however have many favourite parts).
I really do love the magic system more and more with each book, and the world-building is top tier! I can’t wait for book 3!
