Another book in the Roland Benito series. I like this author and thought this one was up to snuff!

Two things I like about the author and her writing:
1 - She lets her characters change in very serious ways. (It is not like a television series, where you can feel confident that the stars of the show cannot die or move to Nebraska.) For example, in this book, Benito himself experiences a major, permanent change in his home life. You won‘t open up the fifth Roland Benito book and see the same familiar home situation you got used to in books 1 through 3.

2 - Also, in her novels, time marches on. In the real world, hard journalism has taken a big downturn and people no longer get their news from the morning newspaper. And so, in this book, the Aarhus newspaper has closed its doors, and former crime reporter Anne is out of a job.

As far as the storylines of this book go, there are four worth mentioning. 1) An 18-year-old named Tobias goes missing. 2) A crime is committed in a Catholic nunnery. 3) Benito’s wife continually receives phone calls — from a stalker? 4) Photographer Kamilla who used to work for the newspaper has found her biological father, who insists on keeping Kamilla’s existence a secret from his wife.

I won’t spoiler anything that happens over the course of the novel, but am happy to say that generally, this author manages to touch on certain subjects without being preachy or showing an agenda.

For example, information comes out about how Tobias may have disappeared, but nowhere does the author give it a label (does not say ‘That is bullying and bullying is bad.’). Also, a character with a spinal cord injury takes up a fair amount of space in this book, without showing any particular agenda or message about people with disabilities (which would‘ve been a dealbreaker for me — I don‘t like authors to be pushy in that way.)

If I had one complaint, it would be a particular part of the book that struck me as being absurdly unrealistic: Following the crime committed in the Catholic nunnery, former reporter Anne gains access to the nunnery by claiming she would like to be a Catholic nun — here, it would seem logical for Mother Helene to ask what church she goes to, and to speak with the priest at her current church and only then, arrange some dates in the future when Anne could do a two-day visit. But no, she gives her a room and welcomes her in, which just seemed silly. This, coming from a character who does not let the police into the nunnery without a search warrant.

On the whole, though, a solid, well-written book.

Nja….. Trivsam deckare, för all del.
