a good read but could use more instructions

It’s a great guide for newbies but I feel I needed one that had more suggestions on how to draw hair and faces and such!

I might sound old when I say this, but back in the day, anime and manga weren’t nearly as widespread in the U.S. It wasn’t until the mid to late ’90s that they started gaining more popularity as they became easier to access through cable TV and later, the internet. Even then, they were often viewed negatively, sometimes seen as super nerdy or childish.

Growing up with shows like Sailor Moon, Dragon Ball, Pokémon, Yu-Gi-Oh!, along with series like Cardcaptor Sakura, Outlaw Star, and Cowboy Bebop, had a huge influence on me creatively. I wanted to draw in that style so badly that I practiced every day after middle school, usually with those shows playing in the background. At the time, anime-style art wasn’t widely recognized in traditional art spaces, so asking an art teacher how to draw it might have been met with confusion or dismissed as not being “real art.”

Because of that, how-to guides for drawing anime and manga weren’t as easy to find or widely available as they are now, especially for younger audiences. From the perspective of my nine-year-old self, I would’ve been thrilled to receive something like this.

It’s simple, straightforward, and covers the essentials you need to build a solid foundation for drawing anime and manga characters. This makes it a great choice for absolute beginners. However, those who have already moved past that stage and are at a more intermediate level may find themselves wanting something more focused and in-depth. This book may not be for them, but it still serves as a solid starting point for anyone just getting into this art style.
