The Admiral's Acquisition

Rate this book
Mak
When Mak's owner decides to get his money's worth out of him, Mak thinks his torment will never end. In an unexpected turn of events, Mak finds himself sold to Admiral Kirana Kot. After years as a slave, is his new owner his salvation, or will she be just like everyone else? As Mak falls more and more for her, will he be enough to get her to keep him? And when she offers him his long-desired freedom, will he take it and leave?

Kira
As one of the few female Admirals in the Coalition fleet, Admiral Kirana Kot prides herself on her reputation and the loyalty of her crew. When her professional association’s mandatory conference brings her to scenic Cena-2, an unexpected setback lands her in the planet’s underground market where she ends up purchasing more than souvenirs. Against slavery in general, she never thought she’d end up owning a male, let alone one that reminds her of what she’s been missing. As events unfurl, the Admiral accepts a rebellion-quenching mission in a far removed quadrant of space. When Mak is mistaken for the Admiral, will she make it in time to save him?

Right, so this was another of those books that took me ages to get through. And not because I hated it. Not at all. It was just... boring. So let me try to explain:

🚀 There are a lot of "recaps"/time rewinds. The story is dual pov, and almost whenever at switches, we wind back time a little. This works sometimes, when something really significant happens to the other at the same time. But sometimes we get the same exact scene twice but from different pov. It really, really bogs down the pacing and flow for me.
This is actually the main reason I struggled to get through the book.
I started skimming a lot to get through it.
Good news is, that it happens less (doesn't stop) past ~75-ish %.

🚀 Long passages of world building that just don't matter that much. Some of the konferences that the FMC goes to could really just have been summed up in a paragraph. Pages of food replicators and the kinds of holo-rooms you can get, her philosophy on them, what she's had before, what they cost, etc, etc, etc... aren't that fun. They don't move the plot or the romance forward. They're just there. It shouldn't be entirely removed, but I don't think we need to dedicate pages and pages to this kind of world building.

🚀 FMC is pretty cool, but also... not critical enough of the system she helps uphold? Like the coalition seems to honestly baddies. She's critical of the patriarchy within it, and all the gross men who abuse their power. But she doesn't seem terribly critical of it has a system/power structure over other planets. I dunno man. Maybe this wasn't the story for it, but I puzzled over it.
For example: one of the punishments that the coalition sometimes uses is forcing someone to serve in a "whorehouse" for the rest of their lives...

🚀 MMC was largely really nice. But I wanted him to take longer about trusting the FMC. He went so quick to trusting her and just wanting to serve her forever. I wanted that to have been a slower build up.
CW:

🚀 The sex scenes were pretty hot. There's one FFM threesome (but the endgame is just the FMC and MMC), and there is one very brief blink-and-you'll-miss-it scene where the MMC gets to be dominant.

Final thoughts
With an editor helping to trim the fat and make the story more streamlined, I honestly think this could've been very good. I love the idea of a spacefaring FMC and a sub MMC overcoming trauma. And despite all my criticism, I do think the story's pacing got better in the last 20%. So this might just be new-author quirks that need to be worked out.
One of the side-characters will be getting a book in this universe, and I def think I'll check it out when it comes. Because I really, really want more adventurous and dominant FMC around! So final rating: 2,5 stars rounded down.

I really enjoyed writing this book and I hope to share this world with my readers.
I believe strong, more dominant women are under-represented in romance novels and write about such worlds.
Hope you enjoy!

Please note there is one graphic rape scene in the beginning where the Male Main Character gets abused. He is saved by the Female Main Character and all their scenes between each other are safe, sane and consensual.

Initially, I was sceptical because sooo many SCi-Fi books out there star strong female characters...
But those ladies are usually just dominant without any pity or showing any respect for the men beside them.
However, in the real life, often a woman may feel compassion for a man.
Maybe it's part of our maternal instincts, but statistics show that the relationships based on these kind of feelings last much longer than those only based on physical attractiveness.
Besides, nowadays the situation when a female has higher status than a man has become more and more common.
This book shows such situations, and the readers would decide what kind of behavior they choose for themselves.

As for the writing, once I started reading, it was difficult to stop.
The plot is simple enough to not get lost, and the story development pace allows you to enjoy the story.
Every episode is very detailed which makes it possible to literally "see" what is happening.
So, if you're not shy and enjoy literature with well-written adult-content, then you should like this book.
This reading is like a fantasy getaway where you can enjoy things that you don't have in real life.

DNF @ 52%

Cleaning out my kindle for the new year and was a bit disappointed with this one.

Clunky writing and a lot of flashbacks of the same scenes repeated. Very insta-love with our hero despite his circumstances.

Basically Stockholm syndrome the book, still a better sci for novel than ready player one. I’m one chapter Maks eyes were green and in another they were grey. There’s also a lot of depictions of food and feeding scenes???? I mean it was wholesome enough but it was a bit of a slog…

I enjoyed the heck out of this, but it's so damn repetitive. There are too many scenes of Kira and Mak, and Macy going to the beach, going back to their hotel, having sex, rinse and repeat for 100 pages. There are also too many scenes of Kira in meetings with the other admirals, that go on for pages and pages and pages and have no overall effect on the story. This would have been so much better if it had been cut down by about 100 pages. We could also lose the threesome scene. I usually like polyamory but in this case it felt off. Kira and Mak's relationship was cute as hell and did NOT need a third. I love seeing dominant females in stories, so... 3 stars!

Mwa. Had eerst even de andere beoordelingen gelezen.

Sigh

I was so looking forward to this book. It started great and I was loving it until the threesome. Why? Afterwards, I couldnt take the couple seriously, it ruined the book for me.

It was highly recommended and I was disappointed.
I've not read a lot of this particular genre and it's one that interests me personally.

A fun and very easy read. ❤️‍🔥

I really like the layeredness of the FMC in regards to the “badass dominant fmc” trope. Too often women in power and authority are pushed by stories to sacrifice their feminity to be respected by their male peers. Not saying women HAVE to like feminine things otherwise they have internalized misogyny, but that, it is refreshing seeing a story that still has the main character embracing and liking her feminine traits while also liking to be dominant while also being aware of how her male peers would perceive her for her preference for feminity so she mostly does her best to keep it private with only close friends and her lover.

And ofc, i love that she not only is a woman in power who likes embracing her masculine and feminine side, but also is someone who likes being the dominant one in her relationship with a man, but also likes to be taken care of by said man. I like the addition of that one small smut scene of her being softly pinned down by her man and realizing she was ok with him specifically doing it because she felt he earned her trust and felt safe with him compared to other men she’s been with before. It also didn’t seem to be a power trip for him, but more so a simple arousing gesture he thanked her for in indulging him in. I thought that was a cute touch.

I normally don’t read sci-fi, but this was a good balance for me and it managed to make me feel interested in the world and people. A touch too many sex scenes and with too little plot for my taste, wished there were more plot to balance it out so it didn’t feel repetitive at times, but I enjoyed myself nonetheless and will be happy to pick up the next book.

DNF. I wouldn't normally say anything, particularly about the rare femdom book we get what feels like twice yearly, but nobody else has mentioned this, so I figured people going into this should know.

This is another one of those books where 'male' is used where 'man' or 'masculine' might have sufficed, and feminine men are mocked for having too long a beauty routine. Because if we need any kind of rep, it's for ruggedly masculine MMCs being superior to fat, soft, curly-haired men, right? Those guys are just so popular irl they deserve to be taken down a peg🙄 Otherwise, the author talks feminist talking points, but smacks of bioessentialism whenever they feel they can get away with it, and honestly, it's pretty gross from the outset. I shudder to think how bad it gets further into the book, if this is what the author feels comfortable putting in the introduction.

Aside from that, the writing style is the most tedious 'It's 2008, welcome to Literotica' thing I've seen in a while. If you like this for its worldbuilding, there's hundreds of BDSM-themed Star Trek fanfics that you could be reading for free.

Excellent romantic sci fi adventure with a twist

The worldbuilding is good, albeit grim, since there is slavery, sexual abuse, indentured servitude, and physical abuse. The admirals appear to be a government sanctioned mercenary group with all the expected abuses of such sanction. This is not a book for you if you can't handle graphic sex (consensual and a few instances of non-consensual), mild bondage, and the imagined universe. Kira is awesome, a strong, accomplished woman in a man's world, and she is trying to slowly change how the admirals do things. Her command crew is just as strong and accomplished, although Macy is the only one that gets major page time. Mak is an interesting character and believable; he wonders if his response to Kira is due to his previous abuse (I also wondered). The universe is fascinating, and I'm looking forward to Macy's book.

A lovely romance in a very underserved niche. This hits the self indulgent female gaze with flavours of circumstance based non and dub con, service, slavery and institutional abuse, easy snap bondage, bisexual best friends, girl power, and flagrant enjoyment of desserts.

CN: there's a pile of sexual and other assault inflicted on the ML via the background horrors of the culture. I like whump++, so this is value add for me, but no judgement if you don't like it.

However! I think Luna Gold nails both the fantasies *of* dommes, and writes the service part of the story with a lush and empathetic eye to the psychology of it. I am excited for her next story already!

This one was lovely after it stopped recapping the previous chapter from the other person's POV.

An Admiral lands on a planet and sees a slave being mistreated so she buys him and sets him free, but he decides he wants to stay her property. I crave that type of devotion. ❤️

I dont remember when I started reading this, but once I started, I read about 70% of the book in one sitting. I was hooked. However, once the couple came together, the book started to fall into repetition, and the last 30% of the book took me months to finish, before I finally decided to push through. And sadly, it just left me feeling bored.

This could be a personal preference, and means I should look for books that are slow burns. At times it just felt like Luna Gold had a quota of smut scene's and lovey-dovey stuff to fulfill. There is a threesome and its like maybe one or two paragraphs, making it feel rushed and just unemotional. It gave me the feeling that Luna Gold was "Welp gotta put this in, lets get this out of the way". I would have liked less smut scenes, like two or three in the entire book, and have it be a lot more meaningful, then what is there now.

I have started reading the second book, and I am seeing the same faults there, as I see in this book. But I will leave that for when I actually finished the book.

The story was good, but it could have used a fair amount more editing. There were some typos, some grammatical errors, and a couple continuity issues that took me out of it.
