You don’t have to be a witch to travel through time, but it helps!
I've always known I was adopted. It never mattered much...until my birth mother died.
I inherited a new power from the mysterious woman. But now she’s dead and I, despite the fact that I have exactly zero training, I’m the next time-traveling assassin.
Don’t get excited. The job sounds glamorous, but it comes with a huge learning curve and plenty of mishaps. Then there’s having to actually assassinate people. That part sucks.
It could be worse. I could still be working retail.
L.A. Boruff lives in East Tennessee with her husband, three children, and an ever growing number of cats. She loves reading, watching TV, and procrastinating by browsing Facebook. L.A.’s passions include vampires, food, and listening to heavy metal music. She once won a Harry Potter trivia contest based on the books, and lost one based on the movies. She has two bands on her bucket list that she still hasn’t seen: AC/DC and Alice Cooper. Feel free to send tickets.
Our heroine gets quite a surprise when she is transported back in time. And then the surprises just keep coming for her. And for her intended target.
This is book one of the series, so a fine place to start.
Time traveling witch assassin. That kind of just says it all. Add in an uninspiring midlife and the snarky attitude to go with it and you have a real winner here. The story is well written and easy to read with a intriguing setup and excellent characters. I loved our heroine and her attitude towards the entire thing. The story moves at a good pace and includes plenty of mystery, intrigue and action to keep things interesting. There is also a nice bit of humor as well. Overall, this is a great start to a series and I am definitely looking forward to more.
Highly recommended.

This book was silly, ridiculous, and absolute heaps of fun. While my brain was trying to puzzle out all the mysteries surrounding Ro, my funny bone was well and truly tickled. I delight in the absurd in the everyday, and it seems that so is this author. And, there are a couple wonderful little riddles left open-ended that I’m dying to learn more about in the next book. I received a complimentary copy of this book through Booksprout.
Perfect start for a new series ... Super fun and interesting story ... The characters are funny and amazing too ... looking forward to more in the series ... Well done!
Readers are introduced to the ensemble of main characters Rowena, Fred, Artie, & Craig aka Cheesecake. Rowena is set-up as an underdog figure and must make up for lost time training for her destined occupation. There is also an immediate villain and an over-arching antagonist group for Rowena and the TIME agency. Ro’s dialogue (both inner and spoken) is liberally sprinkled with sarcasm and dry humor seems to be part of her main coping mechanisms.Twenty-seven chapters, but the chapters seem longer than those in part two. This makes sense because Rowena is doing a lot of “cramming” and so must the author, to lay the foundation for the rest of the over-arching plot, while at the same time building empathy between readers and the characters. Her mentor, Artie is not a complete take from warehouse 13, but definitely an homage. Even though I am in Ro’s age bracket rather than Artie’s, this reader agrees with Arthur in finding the mis-use of analogies and metaphors from pop-culture a bit annoying. It illustrates an assumption of the general dumbing-down of the target audience’s communication skills and thought processes. Cashiers can be smart and Managers more so. Rowena, by design, is supposed to be somewhat emotionally stunted or at least better at dividing The Job from her personal time experiences in order to be able to perform her intended role. Because of her analytical mind, she was able to better read customers to resolve problems. This skill may help her in future episodes?
(Vague spoilers?) PART TWO STOLEN TIME dives deeper into Rowena’s origins while also continuing with the slow burn of her and Craig the Cheesecake’s romance. This episode seems a little grittier than the first book as Ro is now “more seasoned” in both her confidence and powers. Plot tension builds as Rowena and Artie find out more about the Rogue counter-group and Ro learns a few disturbing things about herself and the TIME agency. Would her real bosses be just as mercenary about situations and information as those they fight against? It is a convenient device to have the HQ building accessible only by portal (the mechanics of which are glossed over) as it insulates TIME from the rest of NYC (perhaps even humanity) and is somehow secure from those unable to create portals, such as full humans, who historically cannot be trusted to go on the offensive against magical beings and their own people considered a threat. The implication I got from this and other clues sprinkled about, is The (human) Government is allowing portal witches to police themselves in exchange for performing sniper duties with H.G.’s over-site. This sets up another sub-conflict of human verses witch and magical-kind, which may or may not be a problem in future episodes. So far, it is assumed witches must follow human laws as a hidden in plain sight, extra-talented group living among them or risk large-scale repercussions. The situation of small town people recognizing various characters and their actions across the timeline increases risk for Rowena (and by association time-witches), especially with her appearance and disregard with keeping a low profile while on cases. Will her seeming self absorption and lack of foresight create problems for her later? This would be a giant believability plothole if it didn’t. Could her link to Fred (and his view of humans) be a contributing factor to her actions? Fae beings, outside of their contractual geis, do as they wish, as long as they aren’t caught or specifically dis-allowed by their witch handler. The history and reasons of the situation between Witches and Fae continues to be a tantalizing mystery with miserly crumbs dropped because Rowena missed those classes and much of the storyline is based on her knowledge base being the pivotal POV for the action reviled to readers. Things learned from this episode sew the seed of doubt regarding confidence levels with who really make targeting decisions, bring to light more personal safety issues, along with actions building inner-office alliances against non-witch outsiders and the agencies they work for. Readers also learn along with Rowena, more about how the universe of these books work and it is not always pretty. Physical settings of a fictional version of a town in S. Carolina, possibly other vague locations, have seen action so far and NYC is the HQ these episodes are set in, along with various time periods mentioned in the blurbs.
PART THREE: JUST IN TIME “Time was the magical agency used to clean up the past to save the present and the future.” Nobel on the surface, but just who determines the course humanity and the rest of the world should take? Who are the other powers behind the scenes pulling the strings and do they really know better than anyone else how history should unfold? Can they be trusted?Just as is the case for many other political scenarios, those dubbed Rogues see themselves as freedom fighters against op
This is book one of the Prime Time of Life series and the main character is a forty year old woman called Ro (Rowena) Butler, who works as a manager in a fine food store. Not exactly where she saw herself when she was younger and half of her life is already nearly over. She is divorced with no children and only one real friend, who lives in another town and is a witch like her who she calls GW, short for Giselle Wilhelmina. Only problem is that she is not the same sort of witch as GW and since she was dropped off on the steps of a fire station when she was only hours old, she has no idea who her real parents are, nor had any training at all in being a witch, apart from what GW can try and teach her. Nothing much that she tries herself ever seems to go right and she has caused some damage to her apartment whilst doing so. She lives in the small town of Waxhaw and returns home from work to find a note on her door, from someone at the TIME Agency. It says to call them, which she ignores. She lets her cat Victoria out into the back garden, but sees jump through some strange sort of glimmering lights and disappear. She checks behind the lights, but there is nothing. She pokes her head through and suddenly finds herself in what seems to be her own garden, but with different plants and door colour. Cars going past in the street look like older styles and their tags soon lead her to realise she is in 1993! It seems her hereditary time travel magic became active on the death of her real mother, without her ever finding her! It seems her mother left her to be raised by those outside of the witch world, to hope she would avoid the same life she had lived. A man called Artie finds her in 1993 and tells her to call him when she gets back home to her time, only the cat has his card, making some of it unreadable. It turns out TIME Agency stands for the Timeline Interference Management and enforcement Agency and there are only three witch bloodlines that are able to use time magic at all and see the portals. The witches of the Dixon, Ferguson and Hembree bloodlines, of which Ro is part of the Hembree line. One family is management, one family line does the research side of things and the other, Rowena’s bloodline, are assassins. So basically, Rowena is going to be trained to travel through these time portals and kill bad people! Artie sits in on her training and has to help with her magic training, before she can even go on an actual mission. Not that her first ever mission actually goes well, with her making a massive mistake, that leads to more people on her list than before. There is something seriously wrong with her magic, worse than her previous efforts on her own. If she can’t deliver her actions as required, she will have all of her magic taken away and another family will have to be trained in her role. She is the last of her bloodline and the list of people needing to be assassinated is getting longer. She likes the cool idea of being able to travel back in time and possibly a few years into the future. But there are also rogue time travellers, who have managed to work out using the magic for themselves. She doesn’t exactly like the thought that she will have to kill people, but she has certain attributes to help her in this role, that she never realised. There is more to her problems with her magic than she or Artie thought and she will have to work hard to get accepted fully. If she fails, then she will be back in retail, which is definitely where she doesn’t wish to be. An interesting start to the series and a very strict regime controlling time travel. I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.
There were some things I liked about this novel - the time travel elements (though not super prominent - maybe they will be in future books of the series), the magical elements, Fred the dragon and Victoria the cat, Artie the mentor... I'm a little iffy regarding Rowena - some aspects of her character were reassuring, relatable or entertaining, yet I found her performance (and reaction to it) on her first couple of assignments completely distasteful - perhaps if she'd been a "new adult" I could've rationalized it, but she's supposed to be 44 years old and have been the manager of a grocery store for years. Those details should have given her much more "common sense" on the assignments, in my opinion. I also feel a bit iffy about the premise of the main characters being assassins; without knowing the reasons for the targets being eliminated, I'm not sure it's really my kind of story - I nean, I know we got to learn about some of the targets being "evil" and that felt a little more able to be rationalized, but I'm not sure if we'll get that going forward (also not sure if Rowena and Artie will get that). Since I'm not a fan of violence, graphic or gritty descriptions, or creepy stories, I feel like I want there to be a reason why the targets "deserve" to be taken out and, like I said, I'm not sure if we're going to get that. All things considered, I'm not sure if I'll continue with the series.
Rowena, now 40, has just inherited extra powers from her mother that just passed. She had tried to protect Rowena by giving her up for adoption, but that did not work out, and now Rowena is in trouble. Never trained for the job of Time Traveling Witch Assassin, she starts at ground zero with Arthur becoming a sort of teacher. Loved how she turned a lady who put razor blades in candy into a female chihuahua - a ...itch. Victoria and Fred are quite the pair and remind me of my young cats play fighting as they tease each other. Of course, Fred can always fly away. The storyline was terrific, with the characters building up depth and personality as they go, bringing in the backstories. Loved Artie as he tries to put Rowena on the right path with the Council. The characters are varied and quirky, especially the animals. Rowena has such guts as she decides to go for it, filling the role she was meant to have. Could not put this book down and can not wait to read more of this group. Well done.

I read voraciously, and I have a complex past. I still sometimes find it amazing how the small things that happen in a book can just turn me off the book completely, even if others wouldn't be bothered by it or perhaps even notice it. Such was the case in this book, unfortunately. The main character just rubbed me the wrong way right from the very first chapter. I actually owned a retail store for a long time, and I just could not get past her thoughts and actions toward an obnoxious customer. Even if you’ve only ever been a customer in a retail store, you might find it offensive (not funny). A silly thing to fault an author or book over, I'll admit, but this drawn-out scene just turned me off the character completely. When trying to simply move past the scene, the bad taste that the first chapter left in my mount was not something I could get beyond. I usually really enjoy midlife paranormal stories like this one, but I just never could move past the initial dislike of the main character.
I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.
BORROWED TIME is the first book in the Prime Time of Life series. This series will need to be read in the order of release.
This is easy to read, but great fun, funny, snarky, and a unique set-up. Excellent characters kept the wonderful plot moving along and kept me intrigued.
A perfect start to a new series. I’m glad I’m here at the beginning and I’m looking forward to more from Ro and her friends.
Since I actually lived through the 90s (and earlier) this was a great bit of nostalgia for me. Back to my Future!! Now excuse me while I go contemplate the fact that the 90s is going back nearly 30 years in the past and I was already in my 30s at the time (wahhhhh!).
Note: While I received this book as a gifted ARC via Booksprout, my opinions are my own and are given freely.
Title: BORROWED TIME Series: Prime Time of Life #1 Category /Genre: Paranormal Romance Recommended for: 18+ Grammar/editing: received as an unedited ARC / errors excused. Received from: L.A. Boruff
A slightly unusual beginning a Witch who knows she is a witch but knows nothing of her origins, as she was left at a fire station as a two day old baby.
Rowena Butler discovers she is a time witch, and not just a time witch but an assassin, she must go back and kill targets that have been pinpointed for her. With a mentor, a familiar and a snooty cat, Rowena has to train and learn to kill without giving the game away that she knows nothing about her heritage or her mother.
This is another great book by L.A Boruff, It is exactly what you expect, well written and funny, I love how the emotions of being an assassin in time are handled and explained. The storyline is well thought out and there is nothing left hanging for you to wonder why.
Okay, seriously. Rowena is soooo relatable! And Fred is the absolute bee's knees. Artie is the reluctant friend we all love. Victoria is the voice for cats around the world.
Rowena knows she's a witch, but she also knows she can't actually do magic. Totally fine. Whatever. She's content to just work her normal job and try to make edible food in her spare time.
Until that portal opens and Victoria jumps through it. Rowena can't let a portal eat her cat. No, no. Nay, nay. She has to rescue that cat.
Through a series of unfortunate events, Rowena finds herself as the newest assassin for a witchy agency. But someone is messing with her and her magic, and she's gonna find out who and why.
This was a cute story with even cuter characters. The nicknames and the unexpected catastrophes are top notch. I definitely recommend this one.
Rowena is a witch that her magic doesn't seem to work like she would like. She tries to cook again using her magic, doesn't work the way she wants. Her cats wants outside. She watches her cat disappear, she sees these weird lines. She goes after cat, she finds herself in earlier time. Rowena runs into a man that helps her get back home. He tells her his name is Arthur and call when she gets home. Arthur tells her he what he knows. She is now going to work for the Time agency since the magic passed to her.
I recommend reading this story. There is a lot I didn't even speak of. Rowena's life will definitely be turned upside down by everything that happens. You will really be interesting story line of the time travel. You will be entertained by the characters in this book, especially Fred.
Laugh Out Loud Time-Traveling Paranormal Cozy Mystery!!!
This book is a great start for the fun series, it's very original and unique, who could come up with the book about a 40 years old witch who is a time-traveling assassin especially when it takes her back to the 90's, it's so cool.
It is fast paced full of adventures one right after another and keeps you guessing of what will happen next. It's a great page turning paranormal cozy mystery, good storyline, entertaining, fun, full of action, magic, paranormal, witches, suspense, and humor. I am looking forward to the next book in the series.

Forty-three-year-old Rowena has just jumped back in time 30 years and doesn’t know how, or how to get back. Fortunately, Artie is there to give her a push back to her time. Unfortunately, she now is drafted to be an assassin for the federal government. As part of her duties, she is assigned a familiar, a tiny, purple dragon named Fred as. After several weeks of intense training, she has her first target assigned. Unfortunately, when you miss your target and kill someone else, there are serious consequences. Wonky magic doesn’t help. But it may not be entirely her fault. Now her plan is to find and question her bio mother who gave her up for adoption.
Rowena inadvertently teleports thirty years in the past, back to her childhood home. Requesting help from mysterious Arthur (Artie), Rowena needs to get back to the present. The initial interaction between Rowena and Arthur is extremely bizarre and remains strained throughout the story. The writing comes across as strong, suitable for mature readers. Rowena is quite a character, someone who is constantly in a sour mood and her behaviour harsh and unfriendly; however, Rowena is honest about her thoughts and feelings.

Rowena as a time-traveling witch assassin is just the start of this funny, sassy first book. I love that the main character is a forty-something woman starting over who is thrown into a whole new world of magic and intrigue when she inadvertently makes a time portal. We are teased with clues to her backstory and a potential love interest that have me waiting impatiently for the second book to come out so that I can read what happens next!

Rowen is barely capable as a regular witch. What will happen when she becomes the next in line to become a time traveling assassin? With the help of her new companions Artie, her mentor, and Fred, her dragon familiar , she must learn her new trade and take on her first assignment. I thoroughly enjoyed this book . I liked the characters and was entertained by the situations they got into. I think this will be an interesting new series and look forward to reading more.

I enjoyed this first book in a new series with an single woman in her forties with wonky magic she never was trained to use. Then a portal opens in her back yard and thus begins a hilarious story. I laughed all through the book with the funny storytelling, scenes and Fred. I loved the main and secondary characters and cannot wait to see what silliness and crazy happens next. A great start to a funny series with an awesome main character and her funny sidekicks.

I’m loving these 40 plus stories and this one is about Rowena who inherited magic after her mother dies she also finds out that she is the next time travelling assassin and with no magic training it leads to hilarious consequences. Sorry guys no spoilers but if you’re looking for a funny, crazy witchy assassin story then this book is the one for you, keep them coming L.A. Boruff I can’t wait to read book 2 and I definitely recommend this book.
Rowena is a witch who knows nothing about magic and finds out when she turned forty. When a mysterious portal opens up in her back yard things take a back to the 90's fun turn. This is an entertaining read filled with time travel, ott quirky characters, humor, and a fun storyline. I can't wait to read the rest of the Primetime of Life series to see what crazy antics Rowena and her sidekicks get into. I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book.
Ro was used to her magic doing failing dismally and producing strange results but when she found out that she was destined to be more than just an incompetent witch, it was more than she could handle.
A brilliant fun cozy, starting a brand new series. There are smiley moments, sniggering moments and some laugh out loud moments, all adding to an enjoyable, exciting and funny read. Clever and novel idea, a witch born to be an assassin - what's not to like!!
While the story was a little slow for me in the beginning, I really started getting into it once more action was to be had. It was a lot of fun to read about Ro’s developing relationship with Artie and learning to control her powers. I’m definitely interested in learning more about “cheesecake guy”!! Ha! This was definitely a good read and I can’t wait to read the next book in the series.
Borrowed Time - Rowena aka Ro, is working in customer service at a grocery store. She has bills to pay and it's a job. Ro's magic is a little wonky but that changes when she begins training at TIME. This story is so comical I couldn't stop laughing and ends with a cliffhanger. Very highly recommended.

Rowena's cat jumps through a time portal, so Rowena goes in to find her. She finds her cat, and while trying to figure out how to get back to her time, she meets Artie, who tells her about the TIME agency and that he is to train her to become an assassin. After her first assignment goes horrible, and the next ones after that, she begins to realize someone may be messing with her magic to keep her from succeeding, but who?
This is an awesome start for a new series...has always L.A.Boruff delivers a very funny, romantic and sassy story filled with paranormal and mysteries that is very well written and engaging...I can't wait for the next book in this series., loved it so far.

I couldn’t put the book down once I started reading. It was so good! Extremely original and funny too. Artie’s reactions to Rowena’s goof ups are priceless. The reason why she had the goofs, wow! I can’t wait to start on the next book!

A fun read about a hereditary witch, who can work with time, but had no idea that she was magical because she was given up for adoption and was raised by non-magical people. She’s in her mid-40s and boy is this a midlife crisis. I really like the book. I think if you give it a chance you’ll like it too.
