The Priestess Witch

Rate this book
The spell was supposed to manifest friends, and hopefully a girlfriend. But solitary witch, Sylvan Michaud, should have remembered, MAGICK DEMANDS A SACRIFICE.

Sylvan assumed she was the only witch in the small coastal town of Moose Cove, Maine, until a newfound ability to see the dead thrust her into the arms of two more witches. Soon other magic seekers from her junior class materialize and Sylvan finds herself the Priestess of their fledgling coven.

Spells can manifest in unexpected ways.

Trying to teach and lead a new coven proves challenging, as is the task of navigating new friendships when she's woefully out of practice. The girl Sylvan has a crush on joins the group, as does her ex-best friend. They've known each other all their lives, but have they really? Each covenmate is dealing with old grudges and personal drama. Things get even more complicated when ancient small-town secrets come to light, linking the group to each other, and a destiny they can't yet comprehend.

If she can't unite the misfit group soon, somebody she loves may become the next ghost Sylvan will have to help crossover.

As mysterious fires plague the town, and ghosts continue to haunt Sylvan, she must decipher whether the ghosts are to blame or some other unknown element. The coven may be able to help catch a murderer, provided they can learn to work together.

Sylvan and her coven have power, but catching a killer will take more than magic.

Katerina's young adult paranormal Moose Cove Coven series begins with The Priestess Witch, which follows a coven of witches in coastal Maine. Each book follows a different member of the coven as they struggle to deal with family trauma, small town secrets, and newly discovered magical abilities, all while a mysterious and mythical fate laid out by their ancestors comes at them like a tidal wave.

Katerina holds an MFA in short fiction writing from Goddard College. Her short story Princess Myna and the Ember Snake was recently published in the collection Creating Cinderella: Retold Fairy Tales. She currently lives in Florida with her husband and one son of the feline persuasion. Her heart, though, is still on the rocky shorelines and in the pine forests of Maine, and, of course, in the land of fantasy. She writes about magic, and love, and mystery, which she believes are the essence of any good story. She enjoys playing cozy video games, listening to lo-fi music, cuddling cats, hoarding crystals and tarot cards, taking long walks in the woods, and eating her way around Walt Disney World. The Priestess Witch is a solid debut from Dennison. Her spellbinding writing drew me in, and I didn't want to stop reading. I highly recommend this book if you love witches, small town vibes, mystery, and f/f romance. I can't wait to read the rest of the books in this series!

I wrote the book I wanted to read. A book about a small coastal Maine town and the young witches there, finding their power, in more ways than one. When ghosts, and gods, and monsters, and darkness come for them, they turn to each other like the coven, like the family they are. The series begins with Sylvan Michaud. Coven founder and snarky know-it-all who cares deeply for her community. I hope you enjoy getting to know each of the coven members. Welcome to the Moose Cove Coven.

As a debut novel and the first of a series, The Priestess Witch holds its own. The great thing about this is you can tell that Dennison knows her Wicca, and she feels comfortable passing info on to the reader in a strong voice. The plot is well developed and the pacing is a great combo of ups and downs. Sylvan makes a fascinating protagonist complete with flaws, and the surrounding cast is intriguing and I can't wait to get to know them all. There are some wonderful hints of secrets to come and that definitely keeps me wanting more. This is the type of series that leaves me wanting the next one and hoping that the author types quickly!

In many ways this book was not what I expected but the unexpected is where I loved it. This features a lovely found family and a fascinating mystery with many layers. Something I really loved is how balanced it was between being character driven and plot driven. Sylvan‘s story was one that I was interested in from the get-go and then when the mystery was introduced I was hooked even further! Best of all this book is filled with magic all through the lens of Wicca beliefs. I don’t know too much about Wicca so I can’t comment on how this book portrayed it but I definitely enjoyed learning more and I’m excited for the next installment of the series!! The author has set up a lot of interesting threads to be expanded upon and I have no doubt the sequel will deliver a story just as magical and thrilling as this one. Oh and I almost forgot to mention this book included some lovely sapphic pining so if you’re interested in that I highly recommend it.

Though I usually tend to read what might be referred to as "literary fiction", I decided to change things up and read this YA novel. I can honestly say I was not disappointed! I soon found myself caught up in the paranormal adventures of Sylvan and her friends as they navigated through the beautiful and rugged terrain of rural Maine. The picturesque setting is so vividly depicted that it feels like another character in the novel, full of power and depth.

Though the book is just a smidge over 400 pages, it seemed to fly by. I urge anyone with a penchant for paranormal fiction to give this book a try. Though the main characters are in their teens, they are very well written & well rounded, and I think people of any age will become engrossed in following their adventures. I only wish this book had been available for me to read when I was a teenager!

This book has a lot of good things happening! The MC is great. A lot of good friendships that break stereotypes. A lot of good knowledge and very much teaching for readers who are looking at Wiccan as a religion or witchcraft as a craft. (I think I got that wrong.) But definitely good knowledge!
