Ben never thought owning a starship would be easy. He didn’t expect it to be quite like this . It was one thing to take a job as a smuggler to pay for basic necessities like maintenance, fuel, and food. Another to have one of the most powerful nobles in the galaxy gunning for him at every turn. But when Keep turns up unexpectedly with a new offer that’s even wilder than the last, will it put him on the path toward his true destiny? Or is it just another con? The adventure of a lifetime continues in the follow-up to the #1 sci-fi bestseller, Starship For Sale. If you like found starships, unlikely heroes, and intergalactic mayhem, you’ll love the Starship For Sale series.

I started this second book in the series with the expectation it would continue the storyline and overall tone established in the first book. It does. Unfortunately, it doesn’t maintain that positive interest and instead succumbs to mindless slaughtering of innocents and a battle fought against ridiculous odds. The final 40% of this installment is one long-winded running battle which ends with our hero captured and the rest of his crew escaped. And no resolution to any of the story threads in this installment, so I’m done with this series and probably, finished with this author. Not an entertaining book at all, not for me.

Plenty of entertaining action and additional crew brought abord to add variety to that action. However, the main plot lines, if there are any, actually move very slowly.
This is a fun series if not a little frightening for the main character, Ben. If you'll remember, Ben and Matt were both young guys just getting ready to start living their lives when Ben was diagnosed with cancer. He had a brain tumor that Earth doctors didn't know how to remove without permanent damage.
They were just killing time and had gone to a new video arcade in town and played one of those simulated starfighter games. Ben was the computer nerd of the group and he did exceptionally well in the game. They left the arcade and stopped to get a bite to eat when this guy, Avelus Keep shows up and offers to sell them a fully functional starship. Of course Ben didn't have any where near the kind of money Keep was asking for the starship, but Matt revealed had just inherited a large sum of money. To seal the deal, Keep mentioned that there were doctors out in space who could, for a fee, operate on Ben and rid him of the tumor. So, Ben and Matt agreed to buy the starship and go get Ben fixed. Except it didn't turn out so easy to do.
This starship they had bought was the real deal, only it was shaped like the head of a mecha or something from an autobot. That's why it was named "Head Case". Ben was the Captain since he knew how to fly the ship based on his experiences with video games. Fortunately for him and Matt, the ship did come with a passenger who was also a skilled pilot among other things. Turns out Alter is an alien who has been using the ship as her home. Normally, it takes the form of a human female and it took quite a while for Ben and Matt to find out what she really was. The soon came to accept her as their do-it-all crew-member while promising not to reveal her true identity to anyone else.
So, Ben and Matt find themselves very, very far away from Earth and the Solar System. Some how Keep was able to transport the two from the Solar System to another galaxy while they were making the deal on the starship. Once the deal was made, Keep left and Ben and Matt found themselves in a strange galaxy with something that a very powerful Baron wanted. The Star of Caprum was a tiny star that was powering their Head Case and Duke Sedaya wanted it badly. Their other problem was they now had no money for the surgery even though Alter knew of a surgeon that could do the job.
Of course Ben and Matt had no credentials and no work history in this galaxy. They couldn't just go apply for any kind of job without getting a lot of questions they couldn't answer. So, they did the next best or worst thing and picked up a smuggling job! All it involved was meeting with some low-life scum, getting a slab (tablet) from him/it, and returning the slab to whomever hired them. Once paid, they would have plenty of money to pay for Ben's operation. Only that guy Keep killed the guy they were supposed to meet! Next thing Ben knew he and Matt were arrested for murder (framed) and smuggling and quickly thrown in jail.
This is where the story starts. There's a lot, lot more coming. Ben and Matt have no idea what they have gotten themselves into. They are certainly amateurs acting without any kind of skill sets in a galaxy far, far away. Still, they have one sliver of hope, their contract was paid in full when Ben got close to the now dead courier that Keep killed. But then, money doesn't do either of them any good when they're in prison, probably for life.
I'm so looking forward to the next book titled, "Keep Away" already available on Amazon.
I am finding it increasingly difficult to root for Ben. This my review from Amazon.
Edit: At the time when I first wrote my review I was close to being finished with this book. I had about 30% left. In that time the main protagonist revealed a few… unheroic traits, let’s say. Spoiler warning.
“And more than we can afford.” Alter countered. “Gyer will take most of what we have.” “It’ll be worth it,” I said.
Here Ben was referring to his surgery being worth it. Yes, saving a life is worth spending the money, but he didn’t have to say that. Especially not since the whole reason they went on the mission that earned them that money in the first place, was so he could have the surgery…
“Don’t hit her with friendly fire.”
That generally goes without saying… It’s more laughable when you consider the character saying this was saying it to a former Royal Marine.
“If the monsters on the other side did break through, maybe she (Alter) could stop them. Or maybe they would rip her apart. At the moment, I would have been content with either one.”
So, you remember that deus-ex-machina squirrel they came across in the first book? Well, he (the squirrel) decided to risk his life to buy the rest of the team time to escape. They managed to get to safety, but he was left behind and they had to seal the door off so they could stay alive, or they could run back and then everyone would die together. It was a tough choice no one would want to make, but Alter made it, and this is how he thought of her in that moment. She showed uncommon strength in acting to make sure they would all remain alive, and here is how Ben saw her. I think the author is trying to add negative traits to Ben so he can have room to grow in the rest of the series. Ben seemed like a pretty good guy when we first met him, so I have no explanation for how a morally and mentally sound person could go from where he was to this.
“Ben,” Alter said, turning me around again. “I’m sorry. About Shaq (deus-ex-machina squirrel). I didn’t see any other way to keep you safe.” “Just like you killed a security guard to keep me safe?” I replied.
Here we witness the AH that is Ben, growing even bigger, or wider, or something.
“He’s crazy,” I said, glancing up at Alter (who was at this point lying on top of Ben to protect him from weapon fire). Her eyes were closed. I didn’t hear or feel her breathing, and I realized I didn’t know if she breathed in the first place (because he doesn’t understand the anatomy of a slime girl). I had always taken that for granted. “Alter?”
Now, here we witness Ben prioritizing the most important things first when he realizes Alter is basically lifeless on top of him. These are his primary concerns after seeing her unresponsive because she took the plasma fire that would have killed him. Well done, Ben.
I don’t know where this series goes from here, and I’m not sure I want to find out. On the one hand, I want to complete the series I started. On the other hand, I don’t feel like reading more about this jerk. At the end of this book the deus-ex-machina squirrel inexplicably shows up again, and pulls out another deus-ex-machina moment from somewhere that goes a long way toward saving the day. He basically defeated Thanos for them, right when we were led to believe all hope was lost.
********** original review ************** I’m glad I decided to keep up with this series. This one is a major improvement over the first book. You do have to suspend you disbelief a lot though. I know that’s a given in any science fiction setting, but you tell me, how easy is it to believe someone with an introduction to programming is hacking all these security systems? Anyway, I put it out of mind and enjoy the story. I like the new characters that were introduced, too. My major gripe so far is that Ben keeps sometimes. Uses the imperative when speaking with Alter. The Alter character is someone he should be more respectful and submissive to in my opinion, but he often issues these commands to that character in a manner that come across as dominating. He doesn’t speak to the other characters this way unless giving orders for the current mission. My issue with this is mostly personal, since I dislike anyone using imperatives when talking to me. Of course, one must make exceptions at work, since one is paid to execute commands, but with colleagues that is a major no-no. The Alter character has exponentially more experience than Ben, so it leave a bad taste to have to see this kind of disregard from someone’s whose experience is: community college. I think Ben should try talking to Quasar like that.

"Head Case", second in the "Starship for Sale" series, sees Ben, Matt and Alter take on a high-paying but risky delivery job so he can fund his cancer treatment. It all goes pear-shaped - Ben and Matt find themselves facing life sentences on a prison ship. Alter, meanwhile, has gone to ground. As I mentioned in my review of the first in the series I've always been a sucker for Space Opera - it doesn't have to make a lot of sense (e.g. if Alter can't recall anything about the personalities of those she has 'absorbed', how come she possesses all of their skills?) as long as it plays fair and keeps the action rolling I'm happy. And there is pretty much constant action! That said, it is in a lot of ways a repetition of what has gone before and, with the exception of new crew members, there is little plot advancement. The main villain, Sedaya, is a caricature - given every opportunity to purchase what he wants he consistently opts for extreme violence. It makes no sense as he always fails - even he seems to realise that, even when he holds all the cards, the odds are against him. It is very readable though the YA aspect cannot be ignored and, in my opinion, is constraining the development of the series. 3 Stars.
When I finished Starship for Sale, I immediately rolled right over into reading Head Case. This is what I call SF light reading, the author uses plain simple language and uncomplicated vocabulary so it is a page turner by default because it's such easy reading. It's not particularly complicated science fiction writing, but there are a few entertaining SF concepts that he explores. Other than the few central characters, all the other characters are pretty one-dimensional and almost stereotypical bad guys. I don't particularly enjoy books that utilize a lot of graphic violence and blood and guts, so I took one star off. I just don't understand why so many science fiction authors have to pit mankind against aliens or bad actors and resort to endless pages of descriptions of gory violence.
Overall though, I enjoyed plowing through these books because they were quick read and entertaining.
This book was much better than the first. plenty of action, fast-paced, witty, fun. still do not like Ben like I mentioned in the first book he’s kind of whiny. I wish the author would drop the albatross of cancer which is hanging around his neck, cancer is no joke and somebody with that kind of issue would not be able to do all the things that DMC does. The other problem I still have is of course cliffhangers, and the MC has no self reflection concerning some of his own actions that put him and his team in the Perilous situations that they find themselves in. Will take a break and read something different for a change, I hope the author sees this review and causes his character to develop and grow as a series progresses.
Forbes, M. R. Head Case. Starship for Sale No. 2. Kindle, 2022. In Head Case, Ben and Matt are still looking for a planet where Ben can get treatment for his brain cancer. Other players from the first novel are still around, and we learn more about Alter, the Head Case’s shape-shifting crewmember. The plot moves quickly with more action in space, but there is not the well-developed story arc there was in the Starship for Sale. Matt complains that he doesn’t have much to do, and he is right. People keep telling Ben he is special, but neither he nor the reader is much enlightened about the reason they think so. 3 stars.
Good book have been enjoying the series. We get to meet some new characters in this book, some unfortunately not for too long. 'Hondo' and 'Stang' are thrown into prison as they are found over a dead body with a 'smoking gun' on this planet you are found guilty without a trial. Ke had conveniently left them as scapegoats.
It's kind of hard to escape a prison where the only guard are mechanical dog like creatures and its located on the end of a space elevator! Interesting conundrum, good reading. Looking forward to the next book book.
This book continued a series of very interesting adventures of a fun set of characters. There was even more action than in book one, more interesting characters were introduced, and even a possible hint of magic was added in to the already fun mix of advanced technology. I really enjoyed this book, and recommend it and the series.
All I van say is wow, A fun rocking stocking read...the quad of characters from the first book flesh out and build, giving you a great sci fi read. M.R.Forbes continues to deliver readable quality sci-fi with something for everyone in the story including big robots and shape shifters and...read it was fun.
Events pile on to each other as every time it looks like Ben, Matt & Alter get through one crisis another’s starting before they can catch a breath. I’m also not thrilled with the way Forbes abruptly ends this book the same way as the first. While it’s darker and more grim than the first book it is interesting, so I’ll keep reading.
A fast paced read where Forbes again is not afraid to use every tired cliche and plot device to create an overly detailed story that is strangely appealing . The book is a fun entertaining read. Amazingly I think most readers will want to read this book in one day.
Head Case (Starship for Sale Book 2) is as good as the first. M. R. Forbes writes a book that seems to turn the pages by themselves. Can't wait to read the next book in the series! Just one piece of advice, if anyone offers to sell you a starship, think twice!
I missed reviewing the 1st book. However, I can rectify that now. This is been a very well thought out world and characters are extremely believable. The story moves along at a steady pace and the action follows! Fortunately, the third book is already out, so I won't have to wait to see what happens next!
Forbes has a way with characters, action and humor that lets me immerse myself into a tale very quickly. What really appeals to me is that he doesn't write techie stuff or escaped like he just pulled them from his backside. They actually feel evolved and plausible in context. This series is a lot of fun to read.
My review of book 1 referenced The Last Starfighter. In book 2, so does the main character LOL. But this isn't all cute and fun in the same way. Great tension. Increasingly captivating characters and a decent plot line... all centered around one key player... well... two. Keep it up! I'm diving into book 3 tonight!
Wonderful next chapter in a saga that keeps expanding. The first novel was action packed and super enjoyable, the second does not disappoint. The author has a way of drawing you in with great characters and exotic planets, which I love the descriptions of, as well as a balance of action and suspense. Please enjoy.
The “we found a starship” trope is very much doing the rounds currently but MRF has one of the best in this story.. if he’d just stop ending on cliffhangers, or write faster…
Like a non stop roller coaster ride , then you found your read
A great story non stop action. Cannot wait for the next box in the series. Once you start this book leave time to finish because you will not be able to put it down.
This was a fun book to read. Lots of action. Seems like every 20 pages or so the hero in it and his friend got in trouble or in some death defying fight. Wait for book number three to see if it’s as good
M. R. Forbes has continued the storyline with excellence. This second book in the series leaves the reader in suspense, desperately wanting to continue! Sci-fi readers don't miss out!
Left me hanging like the first but a good adventure tale. Very odd universe indeed. Something else is afoot though, looking forward to finding out just what forbes has planned here!
Ben, Matt, and their friends are back and quickly find themselves in trouble. Ben and Matt get put in jail for something they didn’t do, so the first problem is to get out if they can. Things get worse from there. A great story.
Really enjoyed the new characters and especially His little furry friend. What a roller coaster ride and I hope a future resolution for all of Ben’s problems especially the early death by cancer problem.
I loved the mention of the last Star fighter movie . It’s definitely a different type of space opera . I enjoy the development of the story. I can’t wait until the next book.
Lots and lots and lots and lots and lots of action. Unfortunately, the author doesn’t move the story forward much at all. This installment gets monotonous about half way through so expect to flip through a bunch pages.
Yes we are in outer space, well more like next galaxy space if we are going to be accurate, quite the adventure 2 kids from Earth have gotten themselves into, i am looking forward to finding out what is going to happen next
