After years of psychiatric counseling and group therapy, Private Investigator Brenda Corrino is finally ready to move on. The cases involving David Fanning and Mark Alexander are long behind her. Brenda was largely responsible for helping to secure Alexander’s conviction for several rapes, including her own. A few years later, she worked undercover to get Fanning to confess to the rape and murder of his own daughter.
Her company, Asked and Answered Private Investigation is doing quite well. She has hired Ava, a retired police detective as a new investigator who has plenty of connections with her old unit, which always adds value. Everything is going great until Ava’s girlfriend, Ciara, a television reporter, goes missing while on assignment.
This was my first reading of this author. I wasn't disappointed. The book is the latest in the series that follows protagonist Brenda Corrino a former police officer, now the head of her own private investigation firm. The story included several characters from earlier books in the series, and references to events from the earlier books that are key elements to this one. The author did an excellent of backfilling information on those references so that this could be read as I did as a stand-alone novel. The story moved quickly, We see the personalities at work and I found that for the most part they were filled out with the greatest attention paid to Brenda and her new fiancé. Lesser characters had less coverage but sufficient to make them more than window dressing.
The story itself, as referenced in the review headline, is gritty, nasty, and included sex and violence. This is NOT a "Cozy Mystery" by any stretch of the imagination. Readers might conclude that in advance from the author's blurb. Though specific and at times graphic, they are handled as a vehicle of the plot and not in a gratuitous manner. Needed for the story that is being told, nasty, but necessary.
There are some surprises but I'll leave you to discover them.
I prefer to read series of books in order. This is the latest release but I will go back and read the series from the start. If you are looking for clues to follow, you might conclude that I'm giving a good review and solid recommendation. You'd be correct on both counts.
*** NO SPOILERS ***
Unrelated to this story and its review, there is introduced some confusion in their page where the book is displayed. It lists the novel as Book 4 of 4, but also displays it with the earlier ones, and is marked as Book 5. In that display of the books, there is no Book 3 leaving the novels marked as books 1, 2, 4, 5. I'm assuming that there are no missing books from the display and they are just incorrectly numbered.
WOW, THIS IS MY FIRST TIME READING THIS AUTHOR'S BOOKS, BUT WILL NOT BE MY LAST!! I was captivated by the first chapter and I couldn't book book five down as I tagged along with Brenda, and I know that I missed the beginning of a wonderful series. This book had twists, turns, kept me ranting, and kept me guessing! BRAVO, BRAVO!!
All the hallmarks of the Brenda Corrino series are here - brutal killings, gratuitous sex scenes, and fast paced action. If you've enjoyed the others and/or over-the-top sexualized thrillers, you'll enjoy this.
