The official novelization of the hotly anticipated Uncharted, the new movie featuring Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg adapting the bestselling video game series
In an action-adventure epic that spans the globe, young street-smart Nathan Drake and his wisecracking partner Victor Sully Sullivan embark on a dangerous pursuit of the greatest treasure never found while also tracking clues that may lead to Nathan's long-lost brother. Uncharted: The Official Movie Novelization is read by Nolan North, the voice of Nathan Drake in the critically acclaimed video game series.
SD Perry (Stephani Danelle, by the way, though she prefers SD or Danelle) has been writing novelizations and tie-ins for most of her adult life. Best known for her work in the shared multiverses of Resident Evil, Star Trek, and Aliens, SD is a horror nerd and an introvert. Her father is acclaimed science fiction author Steve Perry. SD lives with her family in Portland, Oregon.
The official novelization of the Uncharted movie is an absolute blast in audible format, narrated by the one and only Nolan North, the famous treasure hunter, infamous thief and orphan Nathan Drake himself! As you well know, I love the Uncharted series of PlayStation exclusive video games. I dare to say that these adventures will always remain in my top five franchises of all times. Although Nathan Drake is clearly inspired by iconic characters such as Dr. Jones from Indiana Jones and Lara Croft from Tomb Raider, he can stand tall between the two, with his head raised and that cocky smile upon his face. S. D. Perry has written a classic Uncharted tale! The author treats all the characters with the respect they deserve and the novel reads like the epic adventure these beloved characters live. As always, there’s a treasure, there are bad guys, there are a lot of fights, secret mysteries to unravel and also Nathan‘s search for his brother. The writing is good, the action moves fast and it’s clear that we are in for a roller coaster of unfortunate events right from the start, when Drake wakes up hanging upside down from a plane.
Nolan North is the only voice actor who could have pulled this one off and he does it with style! The narration is excellent, the voice acting is full of enthusiasm, humor and life, while all the already trademarked sentences will be there at every step to bring a knowing smile upon the listeners' lips. Nathan Drake is only one and his voice is Nolan North, although most probably the movie will not impress too many fans, I think that this audiobook will satisfy our need for a new adventure in the Uncharted universe, and maybe, who knows, a fast-paced and entertaining series of novels.
I hope that you found this review interesting and will consider leaving a helpful vote below. Thank you! Take care, stay safe, and don't forget, always listen with your heart.
One of the better movie novelizations I've read, and I've read quite a few! I loved every moment, and especially enjoyed a longer look into certain scenes. I even enjoyed reading from several different points of view, as it provided a well-rounded look into every aspect of the film. And that name drop at the very end? I was screaming. Now I need to go see it again in the theater so I can enjoy it that much more!
3.5 as an adventure novel 2 as an Uncharted adventure novel
Average the two for a 2.75, thus rounding up. Man, this didn't really feel like Uncharted. Easiest example of this would be the amount of f bombs in the book. The first one completely caught me off guard as not fitting in.
Nolan North was the narrator for the audiobook and the reason why I listened. Maybe it was the speed I was listening on or it's been a while since I've played the Uncharted games, but someone didn't sound right.
It took me approximately forever to listen to this audiobook. It was a very draining reading experience. As a huge fan of the Uncharted video games, it made my head (and my heart) hurt.
The best part?
Nolan North as the narrator. Closely followed by Nolan North's cameo appearance in the story.
What I didn't like?
Literally everything else.
This is NOT Uncharted. Please play the games instead because this is a poor representation of what the series actually is.
The characters that I love from the game series were very much out of character here. I absolutely love Sully in the games. He's one of my favorite characters. In general, I just really like the mentor character (think Vesemir from Witcher, Old Obi-Wan from the original Star Wars trilogy, etc). All that to say that I absolutely hated Sully in the book. He was not likable at all. Basically, you know a book is bad when I don't like the mentor character.
Nate? Ugh. I'm not sure I have the strength to talk about him. Not particularly smart, not at all funny, certainly not charming, essentially not at all what Nate is supposed to be.
Chloe? Eh, I guess she was the best, but I always prefer Elena over Chloe anyway. At least she wasn't completely unrecognizable from the games.
The story wasn't great either, and I didn't like all the language that was in the book that was not used at all in the games.
In sum: just play the games. They're great. This? Not so much.
Pretty much only giving this a 4/5 because the narrator for the audiobook is the legit voice actor (Nolan North 🥰) from the videogames of Uncharted. I know it’s the movie novelization but the characteristics of Nate compares to the games were pretty accurate, him being sarcastic and having side comments which happens in the game and having Nolan North narrate it made it even more special. I’m a big fannnnn of the videogames so I was really excited to start reading this and nearly screamed when I saw who was narrating the audiobook and is coming out with another one will honestly make me cry 😂
7/10 - I love the movie so I knew what to expect. Thought the additional swearing and sex scenes was a bit weird since it was not in the movie and never appear in the games.
I must have been the only one who read the book and didn't listen to Nolan North on audible. I dont regret it either for one simple reason. This is not Uncharted. Other than the fact that there is a treasure hunt nothing here resembles the games. Which was also the problem with the movie. Now the book is clearly much more fun than the Mark BoreBerg movie. S.D. is, as always, a great adventure writer, the set-pieces are well described, each character has a distinct voice and although I thought the book could have used a bit more editing and a few less pages, the plot moves along nicely. The problem is the characters. We are talking about really toxic, greedy, disgusting people here. And i'm not referring to the villains. Chloe is a backstabbing, gaslighting manipulative psycho, joining forces with stone-cold killers and putting Nate in mortal danger again and again. And Sully, dont get me started. He's a complete bastard with no chemistry at all with Drake, a guy who would sell his own mother, a complete amoral a-hole. Yeah they're thieves and no angels in the games but there was always something endearing about them, a warmth, a chemistry between the gang. Here they're just horrible people. You cant even really root for them to win. And Drake is so naive he borders on being an imbecile. So yeah, not Uncharted. But as an adventure book if you can get past the characters its actually pretty fun, with lots of action, treasures and maps, all that good stuff. Still what a shame we never had that Nathan Fillion movie huh?
What I love about novelizations is that I can feel as if I can compare this work to the script when I’ve never read the script. A novelization can really illuminate how meatless a script can be or, worse, bring up any holes with plot and character. It’s truly a treat to see writers tackle it.
That said, I really liked the first 200 pages. For me, Uncharted is a modern Indiana Jones with more supernatural. That part of the book/story really felt like the PG13 equivalent and I was digging where the story went. However, after that, purely based on story derived from the script, I really hated where it went. The third act certainly went fantastical, but in a stupid way that only makes sense when it involves blockbusters and wasting lots of money.
But, I really want to applaud S.D. Perry on how she structured this book. I thought it was really smart to have Nate, Sully, Jo, and Chloe all have their own POV sections. I felt like I got a lot more out of them than I would seeing actors on screen (as of this moment I haven’t watched the movie!) and the number of times POVs overlap during the story makes me believe it was a nightmare to juggle. Props.
Overall, it’s a fun time with a bad ending. The technical writing was fire.
I saw the film last weekend and enjoyed it. But this version read by Nolan North himself made it feel so much more like the game in book form than the film did. As much as I loved the film it was weird having Tom Holland as Drake not Nolan. He was great but it always felt a little off. I felt I had to separate the film as its own thing from the game in my head, whereas this fits with both so much better on my head (minus the little timeline inconsistencies which I can forgive and the book gives a fun nod to)
Having Nolan read the story and be immersed in the story just made it much more enjoyable and right for me.
Plus the ability the novelisation gives to go into characters thoughts and explain the history better makes it an enjoyable version of the story.
I love the uncharted games and I've always wanted a novelised story to enjoy and for me this hit the spot.
Naturally the best part about the entire book is that Nolan North narrates the audiobook.
I loved the references to the games, and I adore how nerdy and excited Nate is when it comes to history. You and me both, Nate. I also found Nate's talk about class and wealth really interesting. I'm glad they added it.
I really liked that the book added Nate, Sully and Chloe's inner thoughts, making them more fleshed out. It also added details that weren't necessarily explained in the film too. One complaint is that it was still very much a screen-to-book adaptation, basically acting like the audio descriptions they have for blind people- Nate did this, then this happened, then that happened. Which, I suppose is understandable, but I do wish it showed more and told less.
Overall, pretty decent. I adore the games, so listening to Nolan's voice for another 8 hours was good fun.
Movie tie-in novel about adventurers searching for lost gold.
Nate is a bartender and amateur historian who meets Sully, a shifty thief with a link to Nate’s missing brother. Soon the two are on the trail of lost gold supposedly hidden by sailors during Magellan’s 16th century travels, a trip that takes them to underground Barcelona and the East Indies, with bad guys hot on their tail.
It’s a difficult job to adapt a script to novel form, and I think SD Perry does a great job here. I only had a vague memory of enjoying the film, so as a few action pieces unfolded in the novel, the film memory would return and I could completely picture what she was writing. But the quality of the writing is strong enough that the novel holds its own as a single entity. You don’t need the film memories to prop it up.
I really enjoyed this old-fashioned swashbuckling adventure.
I cannot fault S.D. Perry for things I didn't like about the movie so this is solely based on her writing. I thought she did a great job adapting the script into a novel. It was fun to see some of the character's internal thoughts. The action was described well but I still don't get the fascination with Bubble Yum. The other thing that I was confused about was Nathan's motivation for the going after the gold. At first it was just for the money then later it was solely for his brother with very little transition or explanation. If you liked the movie, then you will like the book. There were some extra Easter eggs written in as well which was fun to read.
Hugh I mean HUGH Uncharted fan of the whole series from video games to comics now novelizations. Then I was dispirited with the useage of expression of who’s talking has at times the authour made a word capsized that I didn’t know if there talking or thinking, and the lack detail for the mindset of Sully was sup-par because Uncharted is team effort and if work isn’t put into bouth chacthers it just didn’t reach the quality of origin.
5 stars to Nolan North's reading of this book. It was great to hear the classic Nathan Drake voice, and he really got a lot out of it. As for the story, it's just not particularly strong. It's segmented in a weird way and the characters don't feel right to me. Also, add to have so many eff bombs in a novelization to a PG-13 movie. Language like that wasn't really present in the games either, so it took me out of the story.
More detailed, vivid version of the movie story! Some new interesting side plots are added, and more references to the video game are made. I actually enjoyed listening to this story far more than I did the movie! Voice actor Nolan North (the original Nathan Drake) really brings the novelization to life. :)
I listened to the audiobook version of this. Nolan North (Nate in the Uncharted video games) is the narrator, and he does a fantastic job-his Santiago is almost a dead ringer for Antonio Banderas. Uncharted lends itself well to the genre much like a Steve Berry or a Dan Brown with the twists and puzzles and mysteries.
Its a movie novelization so things are in the book that didn't happen on screen. The author seems to really know het Material and since I love the uncharted games I thought I would check out the book before the movie. If you lime novels based on video games its worth the read though the book seems to have more language then in the games.
3.5 ⭐️ for me I enjoyed the book but not as much as the movie. I’m sad that I feel this way. For me is usually the other way around. I think I put myself in a reading slump before reading this book which may be the reason why I didn’t have the best reading experience. I would defs recommend this if u loved the movie and or you love reading action/ historical treasure hunt type adventure books
3.8/5.0 ⭐️ This novelization is better than the movie! So much so! Is like an in between of the movie and the games, is a great bridge. However, because of all the different povs I didn’t connected much with the characters but it was a good action adventure treasure hunt without supernatural aspects. Neat!
I enjoyed watching Uncharted in the cinema (twice 🤣) so I was excited when they released the novelisation. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it, loved the long chapter use displaying each scene in the movie and I like the added scenes that aren't in the movie!
I’m just a really old former gamer guy. I don’t go to movies anymore: too much agenda.. and nope, haven’t seen this’ne either. But on a whim of nostalgia I jumped at the chance to *listen* to Nolan North recount another totally impossible adventure of Nathan Drake.
I got this on Audible purely to listen to Nolan North read out an Uncharted book. Of course, he did an awesome job as always. S.D Perry did an excellent job putting the movie into a book format; I could clearly picture each scene and had a fun ride!
Cliche and sometimes unintentionally funny, overall a pretty fun listen with Nolan North narrating. Adds some cool characterization that couldn't have been shown in the movie which is what a good novelization should do. Made me want to actually see the movie.
