When an unknown alien ship enters Earth’s atmosphere, disrupting global power and communications and plunging the planet into chaos, the world is left wondering…where is Superman when he is needed most? In the mysterious absence of the Last Son of Krypton, Batman must rally the rest of the Justice League to counter the alien threat…but first, he must quell a crime wave on the blacked-out streets of Gotham! Gary Whitta (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story) and Darick Robertson (The Boys) have joined forces to tell a brutal and shocking adventure that will turn everything you think you know about Superman upside down!
Gary Whitta is an award-winning screenwriter best known for The Book of Eli starring Denzel Washington. He also co-wrote the Will Smith sci-fi movie After Earth, and was writer and story consultant on Telltale Games’ The Walking Dead. He is co-writer of the upcoming Star Wars movie Rogue One as well as the animated series Star Wars Rebels.

Why is Batman talking like a braindead Rorschach? God this sucked so fucking hard, and if it didn’t have Darrick Robertson on art, I probably wouldn’t have bothered. Batman’s monologues are so OOC and self-serious, it’s almost embarrasing to read. It’s like some kid who read Watchmen and TDKR once has finally been given a chance to write comics. But maybe this can save itself by being “so bad it’s good” like All-Star Batman & Robin or Odyssey.
This is more like a 4.5 for me. It took a little getting used to in the art department but it really grew on me. I loved the dark tone of the book and the action was great. It will be awesome to see how the Bats deals with this global situation without Superman. Totally onboard for this!
The monologuing was a bit heavy handed, but was still a decent read. Not enough to buy the rest as floppies. I'll pick up the trade or read in DCU to finish the arc.
