The Lord Bless You is a twenty-eight day devotional by Terry A. Smith, a lead pastor in New York City. Prior to this devotional, I was unaware of Mr. Smith's writings. From the beautiful cover of this book to the conversational tone and the excellent messages inside of it, The Lord Bless You brings readers great reminders and encouragements for the Christian life.
I appreciate the focus and message of The Lord Bless You. Each chapter or daily reading in this devotional was brief enough to be read in a day, without losing the lesson and challenge. I enjoyed the many references Mr. Smith made to several historic, Biblical, and literary figures throughout the book, including Dietrich Bonhoeffer, king David, the apostles, and even characters from J. R. R. Tolkien's writings. Mr. Smith brought many excellent applications and lessons from these characters
One aspect of Mr. Smith's writings in The Lord Bless You I was hesitant to fully support was the language Mr. Smith used when describing how God's wants to bless us. Perhaps I am overanalyzing his language, but I always am hesitant to endorse when any author describes God as needing to do something for us ....as in, God needing us to do something for His enjoyment or fulfillment. That being said, I most likely have overanalyzed what was intended by Mr. Smith and I have appreciated his encouragements and writings in The Lord Bless You. Overall, this was a great devotional and I hope you have the opportunity to read it and be encouraged from it as much as I have been. Happy readings!
