Rate this book
The web of secrets. The murder mystery. The baby in Darcy’s care.
Elizabeth must decide if she can cope with the chain of shocking discoveries about her betrothed or if she should run away from him for her own sake.

With her wedding to Mr. Darcy just days away, Elizabeth Bennet’s dreams are about to come true. However, when Lady Catherine arrives and asks for Col. Fitzwilliam’s and Darcy’s urgent help, both gentlemen depart for London immediately and without explanation,
Elizabeth counts the days until Darcy returns. But when he does, he brings with him a surprising visitor. A baby. His baby?
As Elizabeth listens to his most shocking confession, her entire world falls apart. Heartbroken, she escapes, and the wedding is cancelled.
When Darcy finds Elizabeth in London and she discovers the truth, it is even more scandalous than she imagined. The baby isn’t the biggest secret Darcy has kept from her – he’s also tangled up in a murder case.

The story description gives readers a good wrap up of the premise.

Darcy and Elizabeth are engaged and soon to be married. However when Darcy returns from a trip (at his aunt's bidding) with a baby he claims is his, Elizabeth doesn't even give him a chance to explain. She's off to the Gardiners in London. On top of that his plan to give her that explanation is delayed when his cousin, Anne, who is also staying at Netherfield, has an accident and breaks her leg.

As another review states this story can be confusing at times. The mother of the baby, a widow, who entertained many lovers (who in turn helped her with her financial need) was found dead and Colonel Fitzwilliam pulls the knife out of her chest so he is seen with the knife in his hand and he is known (which he admits) to be one of her many lovers.

Elizabeth does, finally, meet with Darcy and is ashamed as to her lack of initial trust in Darcy, when he explains his need to lie to her. There are many times when lies are used in this story: some necessary to allow time to unravel the mystery and some, told by the guilty, to keep secret causes and motives.

The mystery as to who killed the widow involves untangling the exact relationship between this woman and each man she invited to her bed. The Colonel has gone into hiding. The Constable wants possession of the child whom Darcy has sent to live at Pemberley...not wanting the boy to be sent to an orphanage. Bingley helps out with seeking clues and also finds his backbone in dealing with Caroline.

Although there are many editing needs in this story, the mystery did draw me in.

this is a mystery story

Loved the mystery behind Darcy bringing a baby to netherfield. It was well written and kept me on my toes. It was believable
I however did not like the abbreviation of colonel throughout the story. Reading Col throughout the book was annoying.

Problems for Colonel Fitzwilliam

Premise: blackmail letter comes accusing Richard of being father of baby demands money. Lady Catherine finds out. Darcy and Richard rush to town, find neighbor with baby, mother is dead with knife in her ( of course Richard pulls the knife out...dumb ) and he's accused of her murder. Richard runs and hides, Darcy claims baby for its safety then lies to Lady Catherine regarding paternity ( misguided attempt to keep baby out of orphanage) Elizabeth overheard it and runs to her uncle in Cheapside because its too unthinkable to ask questions of her fiance. The remaining story is the hunt for the murderer out of all the men who were entertained by the dead woman, Darcy's begging Elizabeth to just listen to him, and surprisingly Charles actually helping! The number of men involved, the number of lies Darcy tells, and then the number of motives for the murder made it confusing at times. I enjoyed reading it even though it has some issues.

An enjoyable read from start to finish. We have our beloved characters and a murder mystery to boot that keeps us guessing up until the last minute! Who is the killer and who is the baby's true father? I've only recently become acquainted with Ms. Abbott's books, but I'm hooked.
There were a few typographical errors, but in terms of staying true to the period it was flawless.

Ridiculous

I could only read half of this book. It was that bad. The grammatical errors made it almost impossible to read with any comprehension. But some references were too ridiculous to believe. Why would Mr Darcy need to ask Mrs Hurst to get him an invitation to a London society ball? I stopped reading at this point, I couldn't get past this nonsense.
